³ Lift up Your steps toward the ^(A)perpetual ruins;
The enemy ^(B)has damaged everything within the sanctuary.
⁴ Your adversaries have ^(C)roared in the midst of Your meeting place;
They have set up their ^(D)own signs ^(E)for signs.
⁵ Each seems like one who lifts up
^[a]An ^(F)axe against the undergrowth of trees.
⁶ And now its ^(G)carved work altogether
They smash with hatchet and ^[b]hammers.
⁷ They have ^(H)set Your sanctuary on fire;
By bringing it to the ground, they have ^(I)defiled the dwelling place of Your name.
⁸ They ^(J)said in their heart, “Let us ^[c]completely ^[d]subdue them.”
They have burned all the meeting places of God in the land.
⁹ We do not see our ^(K)signs;
There is ^(L)no longer any prophet,
Nor is there any among us who knows ^(M)how long.
¹⁰ How long, O God, will the adversary ^(N)reproach?
Will the enemy ^(O)spurn Your name forever?

79 O God, the ^(A)nations have come into ^(B)Your inheritance;
They have defiled Your ^(C)holy temple;
They have ^(D)laid Jerusalem in ruins.
² They have given the ^(E)dead bodies of Your slaves for food to the birds of the heavens,
The flesh of Your holy ones to the beasts of the earth.
³ They have poured out their blood like water round about Jerusalem;
And there was ^(F)no one to bury them.
⁴ We have become a ^(G)reproach to our neighbors,
A mockery and derision to those around us.
