19 Also after this, Nahash, the king of the children of Ammon, died. And his son reigned in his place.
2 And David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun, the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” And David sent messengers to comfort him for his father. So, the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon, to Hanun, to comfort him.
3 And the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, “Did you think that David honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Have not his servants come to you to search, to seek and to spy out the land?”
4 Therefore, Hanun took David’s servants and shaved them and cut their garments in half to the buttocks and sent them away.
5 And some went and told David about the men. And he sent to meet them (for the men were very ashamed). And the king said, “Remain in Jericho until your beards have grown. Then return.”
6 When the children of Ammon saw that they stank in the sight of David, they sent Hanun and the children of Ammon a thousand talents of silver, to hire chariots and horsemen for themselves out of Aram Naharaim, and out of Aram Maacah, and out of Zobah.
7 And they hired thirty-two thousand chariots for themselves and the king of Maacah and his people, who had come and camped before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to the battle.
8 And when David heard it, he sent Joab and the whole army of the valiant men.
9 And the children of Ammon came out and set themselves in battle formation at the gate of the city. And the kings who had come were by themselves in the field.
10 When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him, in front and behind, he chose from all the choice of Israel and set himself in formation to meet the Aramites.
11 And he delivered the rest of the people into the hand of Abishai, his brother. And they put themselves in formation against the children of Ammon.
12 And he said, “If Aram is too strong for me, then you shall help me. And if the children of Ammon prevail against you, then I will help you.
13 “Be strong! And let us show ourselves valiant for our people, and for the cities of our God! And let the LORD do that which is good in His own sight.”
14 So Joab and the people who were with him came near the Aramites, to do battle. And they fled before him.
15 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Aramites fled, they also fled before Abishai, his brother, and entered into the city. So, Joab came to Jerusalem.
16 And when the Aramites saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers and caused the Aramites who were beyond the river to come forth. And Shophach, the captain of the army of Hadadezer, went before them.
17 And when it was told to David, he gathered all Israel and went over Jordan and came to them and put himself in formation against them. And when David had put himself in battle formation to meet the Aramites, they fought with him.
18 But the Aramites fled before Israel. And David destroyed seven thousand chariots and forty thousand footmen of the Aramites and killed Shophach, the captain of the army.
19 And when the servants of Hadadezer saw that they fell before Israel, they made peace with David, and served him. And the Aramites would no longer help the children of Ammon.
20 And after the year had expired, in the time that kings go out to battle, Joab carried out the strength of the army and destroyed the country of the children of Ammon and came and besieged Rabbah (though David remained in Jerusalem). And Joab struck Rabbah and destroyed it.
2 Then David took the crown of their king from off his head and found it to be the weight of a talent of gold, with precious stones in it. And it was set on David’s head. And he brought away a large amount of plunder from the city.
3 And he carried away the people who were in it, and cut them with saws, and with harrows of iron, and with axes. David did so with all the cities of the children of Ammon. Then David and all the people came back to Jerusalem.
4 And also after this, there arose war with the Philistines at Gezer. Then Sibbechai the Hushathite killed Sippai, of the children of Haraphah, and they were subdued.
5 And there was yet another battle with the Philistines. And Elhanan, the son of Jair, killed Lahmi, the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear staff was like a weaver’s beam.
6 And yet again, there was a battle at Gath, where there was a man of great stature. And he had six fingers and toes (twenty-four in all), and was also the son of Haraphah.
7 And when he reviled Israel, Jonathan, the son of Shimea, David’s brother killed him.
8 These were born to Haraphah at Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hands of his servants.
1 Peter, an Apostle of Jesus Christ, To the strangers who dwell here and there throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia;
2 Elect, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, for sanctification of the Spirit through obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace and peace be multiplied to you.
3 Blessed be God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Who, according to His abundant mercy, has begotten us again to a living hope by the resurrection from the dead of Jesus Christ,
4 to an immortal and undefiled inheritance which does not wither, reserved in Heaven for us
5 who are kept for salvation through faith by the power of God (which is prepared to be revealed in the last time
6 and in which you rejoice. Though now for a season, if need be, you are in heaviness through various trials
7 so that the trial of your faith—being much more precious than gold, which perishes even though it is tried with fire—might be found to your praise, honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ,
8 Whom you have not seen and yet love; in Whom now, though you do not see Him, you still believe and rejoice with unspeakable and glorious joy,
9 receiving the purpose of your faith: the salvation of your souls).
10 Of such salvation the Prophets have inquired and searched, prophesying of the grace that would come to you,
11 searching when or at what time the Spirit of Christ (Who testified before) was in them, declaring the sufferings that would come to Christ and the glory that would follow.
12 To them it was revealed—not to themselves, but to us— that they should minister the things which are shown to you by those who have preached the Gospel by the Holy Ghost, sent down from Heaven. These things the angels desire to behold.
13 Therefore, gird up the loins of your mind. Be sober and trust completely in that grace which is brought to you by the revelation of Jesus Christ.
14 As obedient children, do not conform yourselves to the former lusts of your ignorance.
15 But as He Who has called you is holy, so you be holy, in all manner of conversation.
16 Because it is written, “Be holy. For I am holy.”
17 And if you call him ‘Father’ (Who judges according to the work of each, without respect of persons), pass the time of your dwelling here in fear,
18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things - like silver and gold from your ineffective lifestyle received by the traditions of the Fathers -
19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a Lamb undefiled and without spot.
20 He was ordained before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in the last times for your sakes,
21 You, through Him, believe in God Who raised Him from the dead and gave Him Glory, so that your faith and hope might be in God.
22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth (through the Spirit) toward brotherly love without hypocrisy, love one another fervently, with a pure heart;
23 being born anew—not of mortal seed, but of immortal—by the Word of God, Who lives and endures forever.
24 For “all flesh is as grass. And all the glory of man is as the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls away.
25 “But the Word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the Word which is preached among you.
3 And the Word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,
2 “Arise. Go to Nineveh, that great city; and preach to it the preaching which I command you.”
3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the Word of the LORD. Now, Nineveh was a large city of three days’ journey.
4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried and said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”
5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
6 For Word came to the king of Nineveh. And he rose from his throne. And he laid his robe aside and covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes.
7 And he proclaimed and said through Nineveh, (by the counsel of the king and his nobles) saying, “Let neither man nor beast, bullock nor sheep, taste anything nor feed nor drink water.
8 “But let man and beast put on sackcloth and cry mightily to God. Indeed, let every man turn from his evil way, and from the wickedness that is in their hands.
9 “Who can tell if God will turn and have compassion and turn away from His fierce wrath, so that we do not perish?”
10 And God saw their works — that they turned from their evil ways — and God turned from of the evil that He had said that He would do to them; and He did it not.
8 And afterward, it happened that He went through every city and town, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him,
2 as well as certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities (such as Mary, called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils;
3 and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward; and Susanna; and many others who ministered to Him from their possessions).
4 Now when many people had gathered together and come to Him out of all the cities, He spoke a parable.
5 “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the wayside. And it was trampled underfoot, and the birds of heaven devoured it.
6 “And some fell on the stones. And after it sprang up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.
7 “And some fell among thorns. And the thorns sprang up with it and choked it.
8 “And some fell on good ground. And it sprang up and bore fruit, a hundredfold.” And as He said these things, He cried, “The one who has ears to hear, let him hear!”
9 Then His disciples asked Him what parable that was.
10 And He said, “To you it is given to know the secrets of the Kingdom of God. But to others they come in parables. So that when they see, they will not see. And when they hear, they will not understand.
11 “The parable is this: The seed is the Word of God.
12 “And that which are along the way are those who hear, but afterward the devil comes and takes away the Word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
13 “But the ones on the stones are those who, when they have heard the Word, receive it with joy. But they have no roots. So, for a while they believe, but in the time of temptation they go away.
14 “And that which fell among thorns are those who have heard, but after their departure are choked with cares and riches and the pursuit of pleasure. And they bring forth no fruit.
15 “But that which fell in good ground are those who hear the Word with an honest and good heart, and keep it, and bring forth fruit through patience.
16 “No one, when he lights a candle, hides it under a vessel, or puts it under the bed. But he sets it on a candlestick, so that those who enter may see the light.
17 “For nothing is secret that shall not be evident. Nor is anything hidden that shall not be known, and come to light.
18 “Therefore, watch how you hear. For whoever has, to him shall be given. And whoever has not, even that which he seems to have shall be taken from him.
19 Then his mother and his brothers came to Him. And they could not come near to Him because of the crowd.
20 And someone said to Him, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, and wish see You.”
21 But He answered, and said to them, “My mother and My brothers are those who hear the Word of God and do it.”
22 And it happened that on a certain day, He went into a ship with His disciples. And He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” And they launched forth.
23 And as they sailed, He fell asleep. And a storm of wind came down on the lake. And they were filling with water and were in danger.
24 Then they went to Him, and awoke Him, saying, “Master! Master! We are going to die!” And He arose and rebuked the wind and the waves. And they ceased. And it was calm.
25 Then He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they feared, and wondered among themselves, saying, “Who is this Who commands both the winds and water? And they obey Him!”
26 So they sailed to the region of the Gadarenes (which is near Galilee).
27 And as He went out to land, a certain man from the city met Him. He had had demons for a long time, and he wore no clothes. Nor did he live in a house, but in the graves.
28 And when he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him. And with a loud voice, he said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus the Son of God, the Most High? I beg You, do not torment me!”
29 For He commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. It had often seized him. Therefore, he was bound with chains and kept in shackles. But he broke the bonds and was carried into wilderness by the demon.
30 Then Jesus asked him, saying, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion!” (because many demons had entered into him).
31 And they begged him not to command them to go out into the deep.
32 And there was a large herd of swine feeding on a nearby hill. And the demons begged Him to let them enter them. So, He allowed them.
33 Then the demons went out of the man and entered into the swine. And the herd was carried violently down a steep bank into the lake and was choked.
34 When the herdsmen saw what was done, they fled. And when they had left, they reported it in the city and in the country.
35 Then they came out to see what had happened. And they came to Jesus and found the man out of whom the demons had come, sitting at the feet of Jesus (clothed, and in his right mind). And they were afraid.
36 Those who saw it also told them by what means he who had been possessed with the demon was healed.
37 Then the whole multitude of the country surrounding the Gadarenes begged Him to leave, for they were taken with great fear. And He went into the ship and returned.
38 Then the man out of whom the demons had come begged Him to let him stay with Him. But Jesus sent him away, saying,
39 “Return to your own house. And show what great things God has done to you.” So, he went his way, and preached throughout all the city what great things Jesus had done to him.
40 And it happened that when Jesus returned, the people welcomed Him. For they all waited for Him.
41 And behold, there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged Him to come to his house.
42 For he had an only daughter (about twelve years of age) who lay dying. And as He went, the people thronged Him.
43 And a woman having a twelve-year-long flow of blood (who had spent all she had on physicians, and could not be healed by any)
44 came behind Him. And she touched the hem of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped.
45 Then Jesus said, “Who touched Me?” When everyone denied it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the multitude jostles You, and presses against You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’”
46 And Jesus said, “Someone touched Me. For I perceive that power has gone out of Me.”
47 When the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came, trembling, and fell down before Him. And before all the people, she told Him why she had touched Him, and how she had been healed immediately.
48 And He said to her, “Daughter, be of good courage. Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”
49 While He was still speaking, someone from the ruler of the synagogue’s house came and said to Him, “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Master.”
50 When Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, “Do not fear. Only believe, and she shall be saved.”
51 And when He went to the house, He did not allow anyone to go in with Him except Peter and James and John, and the father and mother of the maid.
52 And all wept and mourned for her. But He said, “Do not weep. For she is not dead, but sleeps.”
53 And they ridiculed Him, knowing that she was dead.
54 So He sent them all out. And He took her by the hand and cried, saying, “Little girl, arise!”
55 Then her spirit returned, and she rose up immediately. And He commanded to give her food.
56 Then her parents were astonished. But He commanded them to tell no one what had happened.
