1 Chronicles 17

17 Now afterward, when David dwelt in his house, he said to Nathan the Prophet, “Behold, I dwell in a house of cedar trees. But the Ark of the LORD’s Covenant remains under curtains.”

Then Nathan said to David, “Do all that is in your heart; for God is with you.”

And the same night, the Word of God came to Nathan, saying,

“Go and tell David, My servant, ‘Thus says the LORD: “You shall not build Me a house to dwell in.

“For I have dwelt in no house since the day that I brought out the children of Israel until this day. But I have been from tent to tent, and from habitation to habitation.

“Therefore, I have walked with all Israel. Have I spoken one word to any of the judges of Israel (whom I Commanded to feed My people) saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar trees?’”’

“Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of Hosts: “I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, so that you would be a prince over My people Israel.

“And I have been with you wherever you have walked and have destroyed all your enemies out of your sight and have made you a name like the name of the great men who are on the Earth.

“Also, I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant it, so that they may dwell in their place and no longer move. Nor shall the wicked people trouble them anymore, as at the beginning

10 “and since the time that I Commanded judges over My people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies. Therefore, I say to you that the LORD will build you a House.

11 “And when your days shall be fulfilled, to go with your fathers, then I will raise up your seed after you, who shall be of your sons, and will establish his kingdom.

12 “He shall build Me a House. And I will establish his throne forever.

13 “I will be his father and he shall be my son and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him who was before you.

14 “But I will establish him in My House, and in My Kingdom, forever. And his throne shall be established forever.”’”

15 According to all these words and according to all this vision Nathan spoke to David.

16 And David the king went in and sat before the LORD, and said, “Who am I, O LORD God? And what is my House, that You have brought me this far?

17 “Yet You, esteeming this a small thing, O God, have also spoken concerning the house of your servant for a great while, and have regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O LORD God.

18 “What more can David desire of You for the honor of Your servant? For You know Your servant.

19 “O LORD, for Your servant’s sake You have done all this great thing, according to Your Heart, to declare all magnificence.

20 “LORD, there is none like You! Nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears!

21 “Moreover what one nation on the Earth is like Your people Israel, whose God went to redeem them to be His people, and to make Yourself a Name, and to do great and fearful things by casting out Nations from before Your people, whom You have delivered out of Egypt?

22 “For You have ordained Your people Israel to be Your own people forever. And You, LORD, have become their God.

23 “Therefore now, LORD, let the thing that You have spoken concerning Your servant, and concerning his house, be confirmed forever. And do as You have said,

24 “and let Your Name be stable and magnified forever, so that it may be said, ‘The LORD of Hosts, God of Israel, is the God of Israel,’ and let the House of David, Your servant, be established before You.

25 “For You, O my God, have revealed to the ear of Your servant that You will build him a House. Therefore, Your servant has been bold to pray before You.

26 “Therefore now, LORD — for You are God, and have spoken this goodness to Your servant —

27 “now, therefore, it has pleased You to bless the House of Your servant, so that it may be before You forever. For You, O LORD, have blessed it. And it shall be blessed forever.”

James 4

From where are wars and contentions among you? Do they not come from your sensual pleasures, which fight in your members?

You lust, and do not have. You envy and desire immoderately and cannot obtain. You fight and war and get nothing, because you do not ask.

You ask and do not receive because you ask amiss, so that you might spend it on your pleasures.

You adulterers and adulteresses, do you not know that the amity of the world is the enmity of God? Therefore, whoever will be a friend of the world, makes himself the enemy of God.

Do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit that dwells in us longs enviously”?

But it offers more grace, and therefore says, “God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble.

Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners. And purge your hearts, you double-minded.

Suffer afflictions and sorrow, and weep. Let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into heaviness.

10 Cast yourselves down before the Lord, and He will lift you up.

11 Do not speak evil of one another, brothers. The one who speaks evil of his brother, or the one who condemns his brother, speaks evil of the Law, and condemns the Law. And if you condemn the Law, you are not an observer of the Law, but a judge.

12 There is one Lawgiver, Who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into a certain city and continue there a year and buy and sell and gain a profit.”

14 And yet, you cannot say what shall happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is but a vapor that appears for a little time and afterward vanishes away.

15 Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, and if we live, we will do this or that”.

16 But now you exult in your boastings. All such boasting is evil.

17 Therefore, to him who knows how to do well, and does not do so, to him it is sin.

Jonah 1

The Word of the LORD also came to Jonah, the son of Amittai, saying,

“Arise! Go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it. For their wickedness has come up before Me.”

But Jonah rose up to flee into Tarshish—from the presence of the LORD—and went down to Japho. And he found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid its fare and went down into it, so that he might go with them to Tarshish, from the presence of the LORD.

But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea; and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken.

Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried to his god and cast the wares that were in the ship, into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah had gone down into the sides of the ship. And he lay down and was fast asleep.

So the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, O sleeper? Arise! Call upon your God! Perhaps God will think upon us, so that we do not perish!”

And they said to one another, “Come, and let us cast lots, so that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So, they cast lots. And the lot fell upon Jonah.

Then they said to him, “Tell us for whose cause this evil is upon us? What is your occupation? And from where do you come? Which is your country? And of what people are you?”

And he answered them, “I am a Hebrew. And I fear the LORD God of Heaven, Who has made the sea and the dry land.”

10 Then the men were very afraid, and said to him, “Why have you done this? (for the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them)

11 Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, so that the sea may be calm to us!? (for the sea continued to be tempestuous)

12 And he said to them, “Take me; and cast me into the sea! So shall the sea be calm to you! For I know it is for my sake that this great tempest is upon you!”

13 Nevertheless, the men rowed to bring it to the land. But they could not. For the tempest in the sea continued.

14 Therefore, they cried to the LORD, and said, “We beg You, O LORD! We beg You! Let us not perish for this man’s life! And do not lay innocent blood upon us! For You, O LORD, have done as it pleased You!”

15 So, they took up Jonah, and cast him into the sea. And the sea ceased from her raging.

16 Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the LORD, and made vows.

17 Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights.

Luke 6

And it happened that on a second solemn Sabbath, He went through the corn fields. And His disciples plucked the ears of corn and ate and rubbed them in their hands.

And certain Pharisees said to them, “Why do you do that which is not lawful to do on the Sabbath days?”

Then Jesus answered them, and said, “Have you not read what David did when he himself, and those who were with him, were hungry?

“How he went into the house of God and took and ate the showbread, and also gave to those who were with him (which was not lawful to eat, except only for the priests)?”

And He said to them, “The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath day.”

It also happened that on another Sabbath, He entered into the synagogue and taught. And there was a man whose right hand was dried up.

And the scribes and Pharisees watched Him, to see if He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him.

But He knew their thoughts and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Arise, and stand up in the midst.” And he arose and stood up.

Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you a question: Which is lawful on the Sabbath days - to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to destroy?”

10 And He looked around at them all and said to the man, “Stretch forth your hand.” And he did so. And his hand was restored again, as whole as the other.

11 Then they were filled with madness and discussed what they might do to Jesus.

12 And it happened that in those days He went into a mountain to pray. And He spent the night in prayer to God.

13 And when it was day, He called His disciples. And He chose twelve of them (whom He also called Apostles):

14 Simon (whom He also named Peter) and Andrew (his brother), James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

15 Matthew and Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zealous,

16 Judas brother of James, and Judas Iscariot (who was also the traitor).

17 Then He came down with them and stood in a plain place with the crowd of His disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judea and Jerusalem and from the seacoasts of Tyre and Sidon. They came to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases.

18 And those who were tormented by foul spirits were healed.

19 And the whole multitude sought to touch Him. For power went out of Him and healed them all.

20 And He lifted up His eyes upon His disciples, and said, “Blessed are you poor. For yours is the Kingdom of God.

21 “Blessed are you who hunger now. For you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now. For you shall laugh.

22 “Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they separate you, and revile you, and put out your name as evil, for the Son of Man’s sake.

23 “Rejoice on that day and be glad. For behold, your reward is great in Heaven. For in like manner did their fathers to the Prophets:

24 “But woe to you rich. For you have received your comfort.

25 “Woe to you who are full. For you shall hunger. Woe to you who now laugh. For you shall wail and weep.

26 “Woe to you when all men speak well of you. For so did their fathers to the false prophets.

27 “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies. Do well to those who hate you.

28 “Bless those who curse you and pray for those who hurt you.

29 “And to the one who strikes you on the cheek, offer also the other, and the one who takes away your cloak, do not forbid to take your coat also.

30 “Give to everyone who asks of you. And from the one who takes away what is yours, do not ask for it back.

31 “And as you would have men do to you, so likewise do to them.

32 “For if you love those who love you, what thanks shall you have? For even the sinners love those who love them.

33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what thanks shall you have? For even the sinners do the same.

34 “And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what thanks shall you have? For even the sinners lend to sinners to receive the same.

35 “Therefore, love your enemies. And do good. And lend, looking for nothing in return. And your reward shall be great. And you shall be the children of the Most High. For He is kind to the ungrateful and to the evil.

36 “Therefore, be merciful, as your Father is also merciful.

37 “Do not judge. And you shall not be judged. Do not condemn. And you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you shall be forgiven.

38 “Give, and it shall be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, shall be laid in your lap. For with what measure you measure, it shall be measured to you again.”

39 And He spoke a parable to them, “Can the blind lead the blind? Shall they not both fall into the ditch?

40 “The disciple is not above the master. But whoever would be a perfect disciple shall be as his master.

41 “And why do you see a splinter in your brother’s eye, yet do not consider the beam that is in your own eye?

42 “Or, how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me pull out the splinter that is in your eye,’ when you do not see the beam that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! Cast out the beam from your own eye first. And then you shall see perfectly to pull out the splinter that is in your brother’s eye.

43 “For it is not a good tree that brings forth evil fruit, nor an evil tree that brings forth good fruit.

44 “For every tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes gathered from bushes.

45 “A good man, out of the good treasure of his heart, brings forth good. And an evil man, out of the evil treasure of his heart, brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

46 “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord’ and do not do the things that I speak?

47 “Whoever comes to Me and hears My words, and does the same, I will show you to whom he is like.

48 “He is like a man who built a house, and dug deep, and laid the foundation on a rock. And when the waters rose, the flood beat upon that house, but could not shake it. For it was grounded upon a rock.

49 “But the one who hears and does not do, is like a man who built a house upon the earth without foundation (against which the flood beat, and it immediately fell). And the fall of that house was great.”
