1 Chronicles 11-12

11 Then all Israel gathered themselves to David, to Hebron, saying, “Behold, we are your bones and your flesh.

“And in time past, even when Saul was king, you led Israel out and in. And the LORD your God said to you, ‘You shall feed My people Israel. And you shall be captain over My people Israel.’”

So, all the elders of Israel came to the king, to Hebron. And David made a covenant with them in Hebron, before the LORD. And they anointed David king over Israel, according to the Word of the LORD, by the hand of Samuel.

And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (which is Jebus), where the Jebusites were the inhabitants of the land.

And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You shall not come in here.” Nevertheless, David took the tower of Zion, which is the City of David.

And David said, “Whoever strikes the Jebusites first shall be the chief and captain.” So Joab, the son of Zeruiah, went up first and was captain.

And David dwelt in the tower. Therefore, they called it the City of David.

And he built the city on every side, from Millo all around. And Joab repaired the rest of the city.

And David prospered and grew; for the LORD of Hosts was with him.

10 Also, these are the chiefs of the valiant men who were with David and joined their force with him in his kingdom with all Israel, to make him king over Israel, according to the Word of the LORD.

11 And this is the number of the valiant men whom David had: Jashobeam the son of Hachmoni, the chief among thirty. He lifted up his spear against three hundred, whom he killed at one time.

12 And after him was Eleazar, the son of [c]Dodo the Ahohite, who was one of the three valiant men.

13 He was with David at Pasdammim. And the Philistines were gathered together to battle there. And there was a parcel of ground full of barley. And the people fled before the Philistines.

14 And they stood in the midst of the field and saved it and killed the Philistines. So, the LORD gave a great victory.

15 And three of the thirty captains went to a rock, to David, into the cave of Adullam. And the army of the Philistines camped in the Valley of Rephaim.

16 And when David was in the stronghold, the Philistines garrison was at Bethlehem.

17 And David longed, and said, “Oh, that one would give me drink from the water of the well of Bethlehem that is at the gate.”

18 Then these three broke through the army of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and took it and brought it to David. But David would not drink it, but poured it out as an oblation to the LORD,

19 and said, “Do not let my God allow me to do this. Should I drink the blood of these men’s lives? For they have jeopardized their lives to bring it.” Therefore, he would not drink it. These things these three mighty men did.

20 And Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of the three. And he lifted up his spear against three hundred and killed them and had the name among the three.

21 Among the three he was more honorable than the other two; and he was their captain. But he did not seek a place among the three.

22 Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada (the son of a valiant man), who had done many acts, and was of Kabzeel, killed two strong men of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion in the midst of a pit, in time of snow.

23 And he killed an Egyptian, a man of great stature (five cubits tall). And a spear like a weaver’s beam was in the Egyptian’s hand. And he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear.

24 These things Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, did. And he had the name among the three worthies.

25 Behold, he was honorable among thirty. But he did not seek a place among the three. And David made him one of his counselors.

26 These were also valiant men of war: Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,

27 Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the Pelonite,

28 Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abiezer the Anathothite,

29 Sibbechai the Hushathite, Ilai the Ahohite,

30 Maharai the Netophathite, Heled the son of Baanah the Netophathite,

31 Ithai the son of Ribai of Gibeah (of the children of Benjamin), Benaiah the Pirathonite,

32 Hurai of the rivers of Gaash, Abiel the Arbathite,

33 Azmaveth the Baharumite, Eliahba the Shaalbonite,

34 the sons of Hashem the Gizonite, Jonathan the son of Shageh the Harite,

35 Ahiam the son of Sacar the Hararite, Eliphal the son of Ur,

36 Hepher the Mecherathite, Ahijah the Pelonite,

37 Hezro the Carmelite, Naarai the son of Ezbai,

38 Joel the brother of Nathan, Mibhar the son of Hagri,

39 Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Berothite, the armor bearer of Joab, the son of Zeruiah,

40 Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite,

41 Uriah the Hittite, Zabad the son of Ahlai,

42 Adina (the son of Shiza the Reubenite), a captain of the Reubenites, and thirty with him.

43 Hanan the son of Maachah, and Joshaphat the Mithnite,

44 Uzzia the Ashterathite, Shama and Jeiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite,

45 Jediael the son of Shimri, and Joha his brother the Tizite,

46 Eliel the Mahavite, and Jeribai and Joshaviah the sons of Elnaam, and Ithmah the Moabite,

47 Eliel and Obed, and Jaasiel the Mezobaite.

12 Also, these are those who came to David, to Ziklag, while he was still under restraint because of Saul, the son of Kish. And they were among the valiant and helpers of the battle.

They were weaponed with bows and could use the right and the left hand with stones and with arrows and with bows and were Saul’s brethren, of Benjamin.

The chiefs were Ahiezer and Joash, the sons of Shemaah, a Gibeathite, and Jeziel and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth, Berachah and Jehu the Anathothite,

and Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a valiant man among thirty (and above the thirty), and Jeremiah and Jahaziel and Johanan and Jozabad the Gederathite,

Eluzai and Jerimoth and Bealiah and Shemariah and Shephatiah the Haruphite,

Elkanah and Jisshiah and Azarel and Joezer, Jashobeam of Korah

and Joelah and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham of Gedor.

And some of the Gadites separated themselves to David, into the stronghold of the wilderness, valiant men of war, men of arms for battle who could handle spear and shield. And their faces were like the faces of lions, and similar in swiftness to the deer in the mountains:

Ezer the chief, Obadiah the second, Eliab the third,

10 Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth,

11 Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh,

12 Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth,

13 Jeremiah the tenth, Machbanai the eleventh.

14 These were the sons of Gad, captains of the army. One of the least of them could resist a hundred, and the greatest a thousand.

15 These are those who went over Jordan in the first month, when it had overflowed all its banks, and put to flight all those of the valley toward the east and the west.

16 And some of the children of Benjamin and Judah came to the stronghold, to David.

17 And David went out to meet them and answered and said to them, “If you have come peaceably to me, to help me, my heart shall be knit with yours. But if you have come to betray me to my adversaries, there being no wickedness in my hands, the God of our fathers will behold it and rebuke it.”

18 And the Spirit came upon Amasai, who was the chief of thirty. And he said, “We are yours, David, and with you, O son of Jesse! Peace! Peace to you and peace to your helpers. For your God helps you.” Then David received them and made them captains of the garrison.

19 And some from Manasseh fell to David when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle. But they did not help them. For the princes of the Philistines, under advisement, sent him away, saying, “He will fall to his master Saul for our heads.”

20 As he went to Ziklag, there fell to him of Manasseh: Adnah and Jozabad and Jediael and Michael and Jozabad and Elihu and Zillethai, heads of the thousands who were of Manasseh.

21 And they helped David against that band; for they were all valiant men and were captains in the army.

22 For at that time, day by day, they came to David to help him, until it was a great army, like the host of God.

23 And these are the numbers of the captains who were armed to battle and came to David (to Hebron) to turn over the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the Word of the LORD.

24 The children of Judah who bore shield and spear were six thousand eight hundred, armed to the war,

25 of the children of Simeon, valiant men of war, seven thousand one hundred.

26 of the children of Levi, four thousand six hundred.

27 And Jehoiada was the chief of those from Aaron. And with him were three thousand seven hundred.

28 And of Zadok (a very valiant young man) and of his father’s household, came twenty-two captains.

29 And of the children of Benjamin, the brethren of Saul, came three thousand. For a great part of them until that time had kept the ward of the House of Saul.

30 And of the children of Ephraim came twenty thousand, and eight hundred valiant men and famous men in the household of their fathers.

31 And of the half tribe of Manasseh came eighteen thousand, who were appointed by name to come and make David king.

32 And of the children of Issachar—who were men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do—the heads of them were two hundred. And all their brethren were at their command.

33 Of Zebulun came fifty thousand who went out to battle, expert in war and in all instruments of war, who could keep the battle in formation. They were not of a double heart.

34 And of Naphtali came a thousand captains, and with them those with shield and spear (thirty-seven thousand).

35 And of Dan came twenty-eight thousand six hundred experts in battle.

36 And of Asher came forty thousand who went out to the battle and were trained in the wars.

37 And of the other side of Jordan, of the Reubenites and of the Gadites and of the half tribe of Manasseh, with all instruments of war to fight with, one hundred twenty thousand.

38 All these men of war, who could lead an army, came to Hebron with upright heart to make David king over all Israel. And all the rest of Israel was of one accord to make David king.

39 And they were there with David for three days, eating and drinking. For their brethren had prepared for them.

40 Moreover, those who were near to them, from as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought bread upon donkeys and on camels and on mules and on oxen: abundant meat, flour, figs, raisins, wine, oil, oxen and sheep. For there was joy in Israel.

Hebrews 13

13 Let brotherly love continue.

Do not forget to entertain strangers. For thereby some have unknowingly received angels into their houses.

Remember the prisoners, as though you were bound with them; and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.

Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled. But God will judge whoremongers and adulterers.

Let your conversation be without covetousness. And be content with those things that you have. For He has said,

“I will neither fail you nor forsake you.”

So that we may boldly say, “The Lord is my helper. I will not fear what man can do to me.”

Remember your leaders who have declared to you the Word of God. Follow their faith, considering what has been the outcome of their conduct. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Do not be carried about with strange and diverse doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart is established with grace, and not with food which has not profited those who walk in them.

10 We have an altar from which those who serve in the Tabernacle have no authority to eat.

11 For the bodies of those beasts whose blood is brought into the Holy Place by the High Priest for sin, are burnt outside the camp.

12 Therefore, even Jesus - so that He might sanctify the people with His own blood - suffered outside the gate.

13 Therefore, let us go forth to Him out of the camp, bearing His reproach.

14 For here have we no continuing city. But we seek one to come.

15 Therefore, by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God (that is, the fruit of the lips which confess His Name).

16 Do not forget to do good and to share. For God is pleased with such sacrifices.

17 Obey your leaders and submit. For they watch over your souls, as those who must give an account. So that they may do so with joy and not with grief. For that is unprofitable for you.

18 Pray for us. For we are confident that we have a good conscience in all things, desiring to live honestly.

19 And I desire that you do so somewhat more earnestly, that I may be restored to you more quickly.

20 May the God of Peace, Who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus - the Great Shepherd of the sheep - through the blood of the everlasting Covenant,

21 make you perfect in all good works; to do His will, working in you that which is pleasant in His sight through Jesus Christ, to Whom be praise forever and ever. Amen.

22 I implore you also, brothers, to bear the words of exhortation. For I have written to you in few words.

23 Know that our brother, Timothy, has been freed; with whom, if he comes shortly, I will see you.

24 Greet all your leaders and all the saints. Those of Italy greet you.

25 Grace be with you all. Amen.

(Written to the Hebrews from Italy. And sent by Timothy.)

Amos 7

Thus has the LORD God showed to me. And behold, He formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth. And lo, it was in the latter growth, after the king’s mowing.

And when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, “O LORD God, spare, I beg You. Who shall raise up Jacob? For he is small.”

So the LORD repented for this. “It shall not be,” said the LORD.

Thus has the LORD God showed to me. And behold, the LORD God called to judgment by fire. And it devoured the great deep and ate up a part.

Then I said, “O LORD God! Cease, I beg You. Who shall raise up Jacob? For he is small.”

So the LORD repented for this. “This also shall not be,” said the LORD God.

Thus He showed me. And behold, the LORD stood upon a wall made by plumbline, with a plumbline in His hand.

And the LORD said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumbline.” Then said the LORD, “Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of My people, Israel, and will pass by them no more.

“And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate. And the temples of Israel shall be destroyed. And I will rise against the House of Jeroboam with the sword.”

10 Then, Amaziah, the Priest of Bethel, sent to Jeroboam, King of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the House of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words.

11 “For thus Amos says, ‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword. And Israel shall be led away captive out of their own land.’”

12 Also, Amaziah said to Amos, “O you, the Seer! Go! Flee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread. And prophesy there.

13 “But prophesy no more at Bethel. For it is the king’s chapel. And it is the king’s court.”

14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, “I was no Prophet. Nor was I a Prophet’s son. But I was a herdsman, and a gatherer of wild figs.

15 “And the LORD took me as I followed the flock. And the LORD said to me, ‘Go. Prophesy to My people, Israel.’

16 “Now, therefore, hear the Word of the LORD. You say, ‘Do not Prophesy against Israel, and speak nothing against the House of Isaac.’

17 “Therefore, thus says the LORD: “Your wife shall be a harlot in the city. And your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword. And your land shall be divided by plumbline. And you shall die in a polluted land. And Israel shall surely go forth into captivity in this land.”

Luke 2

And it happened in those days that there came a decree from Augustus Caesar that all the world should be registered.

(This first registration was made when Quirinius was Governor of Syria.)

Therefore, all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee (out of a city called Nazareth) into Judea (to the city of David - which is called Bethlehem - because he was of the House and lineage of David)

to register with Mary (his betrothed), who was with child.

And so it was that while they were there, the days were completed that she should be delivered.

And she brought forth her first begotten Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a feeding trough (because there was no room for them in the inn).

And there were in that same country, shepherds, abiding in the field, and keeping watch over their flock by night.

And lo, the Angel of the Lord came upon them. And the Glory of the Lord shone about them. And they were very afraid.

10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid! For behold, I bring you glad tidings of great joy, which shall be to all the people.

11 “For to you is born this day in the City of David, a Savior, Who is Christ the Lord.

12 “And this shall be a sign to you - you shall find the Baby swaddled and laid in a feeding trough.”

13 And immediately, there was with the Angel a multitude of Heavenly soldiers, praising God, and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the High Heaven! Peace on Earth, and to man, according to His good pleasure!”

15 And it came to pass, when the angels had gone away from them into Heaven, the shepherds said one to another, “Let us go to Bethlehem, then, and see this thing which has happened, which the Lord has shown to us.”

16 So they came quickly, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the Baby laid in the feeding trough.

17 And when they had seen it, they made known the thing which was told to them about that Child.

18 And all who heard it, marveled at the things which were told to them by the shepherds.

19 But Mary preserved all those sayings and pondered them in her heart.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen as it was spoken to them.

21 And when the eighth day had come (on which they circumcised the Child), His Name was then called “Jesus” - which was named by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.

22 And when the days of her purification were completed (according to the Law of Moses), they brought Him to Jerusalem, to present Him to the Lord,

23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male shall be called holy to the Lord.”)

24 and to give an oblation - as is commanded in the Law of the Lord - a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.

25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was just and feared God and waited for the consolation of Israel. And the Holy Ghost was upon him.

26 And it was declared to him from God by the Holy Ghost that he should not see death before he had seen the Anointed of the Lord.

27 And he was led by the Spirit into the Temple. And when the parents brought in the Baby Jesus, to do for Him after the custom of the Law,

28 he then took Him in his arms and praised God, and said,

29 “Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word!

30 “For my eyes have seen Your Salvation

31 “(which You have prepared before the face of all people);

32 “a Light to be revealed to the Gentiles and the Glory of Your people, Israel!”

33 And Joseph and his mother marveled at those things which were spoken about Him.

34 And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, His mother, “Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rising again of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be spoken against,

35 Yes, and a sword shall pierce through your soul, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be opened.”

36 And there was a prophetess - one Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher - who was of a great age (after she had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity).

37 And she had been widowed for about 84 years and had never left the Temple; but had served God with fasting and prayers night and day.

38 Then, coming upon them at that same instant, she likewise confessed the Lord, and spoke of Him to all who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

39 And when they had performed all things according to the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth.

40 And the Child grew, and became strong in Spirit, and was filled with wisdom. And the grace of God was with Him.

41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover.

42 And when He was twelve years old, and they had come up to Jerusalem (after the custom of the feast),

43 and had finished the days and were returning, the child Jesus remained in Jerusalem. And neither Joseph nor his mother, Mary, knew.

44 But they, supposing that He had been in their company, went a day’s journey and sought Him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances.

45 And when they did not find Him, they turned back to Jerusalem and sought Him.

46 And it happened that after three days they found Him in the Temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, hearing them and asking them questions.

47 And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers.

48 So when they saw Him, they were amazed. And His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You dealt with us like this? Behold, Your father and I have sought You with very heavy hearts.”

49 Then He said to them, “How is it that you sought Me? Did you not know that I must go about My Father’s business?”

50 But they did not understand the Word that He spoke to them.

51 Then He went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. And His mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

52 And Jesus increased in wisdom, and stature, and in favor with God and man.
