Daniel 9:1 - Hosea 13:6

Daniel’s Prayer of Supplication

In the first year of (A)Darius the son of Ahasuerus, from the seed of the Medes, who was made king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans— in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, discerned in the books the (B)number of the years concerning which the word of [a]Yahweh came to (C)Jeremiah the prophet for the fulfillment of the laying waste of Jerusalem, namely, (D)seventy years. So I gave my face to the Lord God to seek Him by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. And I prayed to Yahweh my God and confessed and said, “Alas, O Lord, the (E)great and awesome God, who (F)keeps His covenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments, (G)we have sinned and committed iniquity and acted wickedly and (H)rebelled, even (I)turning aside from Your commandments and judgments. Moreover, we have not (J)listened to Your slaves the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings, our princes, our fathers, and all the people of the land.

(K)To You, O Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us [b](L)open shame, as it is this day—to the men of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and all Israel, those who are nearby and those who are far away in (M)all the countries to which You have banished them, because of their unfaithful deeds which they have committed against You. O Yahweh, to us belongs [c]open shame, to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, because we have sinned against You. To the Lord our God belong (N)compassion and forgiveness, [d]for we have (O)rebelled against Him; 10 nor have we listened to the voice of Yahweh our God, to walk in His [e]laws which He (P)put before us through His slaves the prophets. 11 Indeed (Q)all Israel has trespassed against Your law, even turning aside, not listening to Your voice; so the (R)curse has been poured out on us, along with the oath which is written in the [f]law of Moses the [g]servant of God, for we have sinned against Him. 12 Thus He has (S)established His words which He had spoken against us and against our (T)judges who judged us, to bring on us great calamity; for under the whole heaven there has (U)not been done anything like what was done to Jerusalem. 13 As it is written in the [h](V)law of Moses, all this calamity has come on us; yet we have (W)not [i]entreated the favor of Yahweh our God by (X)turning from our iniquity and acting wisely in Your truth. 14 Therefore Yahweh has (Y)watched over the calamity and brought it on us; for Yahweh our God is (Z)righteous with respect to all His deeds which He has done, but we have not listened to His voice.

15 “So now, O Lord our God, who have (AA)brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a strong hand and have (AB)made a name for Yourself, as it is this day—we have sinned; we have acted wickedly. 16 O Lord, in accordance with all Your righteousness, let now Your (AC)anger and Your wrath turn away from Your city Jerusalem, Your (AD)holy mountain; for because of our sins and the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people have become a (AE)reproach to all those around us. 17 So now, our God, listen to the prayer of Your slave and to his supplications, and for [j]Your sake, O Lord, (AF)let Your face shine on Your (AG)desolate sanctuary. 18 O my God, (AH)incline Your ear and listen! Open Your eyes and (AI)see our desolations and the city which is (AJ)called by Your name; for we are not [k](AK)presenting our supplications before You on account of any righteousness of our own, but on account of Your abundant compassion. 19 O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, give heed and take action! For Your own sake, O my God, (AL)do not delay, because Your city and Your people are called by Your name.”

Gabriel Brings Understanding

20 Now while I was (AM)speaking and praying, and (AN)confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and [l]presenting my supplication before Yahweh my God in behalf of the holy mountain of my God, 21 and while I was still speaking in prayer, then the man (AO)Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision [m]previously, [n]touched me [o]in my extreme weariness about the time of the (AP)evening offering. 22 Then he made me understand and spoke with me and said, “O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you insight with (AQ)understanding. 23 At the (AR)beginning of your supplications the word was issued, so I have come to tell you, for you are [p](AS)highly esteemed; so understand the message and gain (AT)understanding in what has appeared.

Seventy Weeks and the Messiah

24 “Seventy [q](AU)weeks have been determined for your people and for your holy city, to [r]finish the transgression, to [s]make an end of sin, to (AV)make atonement for iniquity, to bring in (AW)everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and [t]prophecy, and to anoint the Holy of Holies. 25 So you are to know and have insight that from the going out of a [u](AX)word to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until [v](AY)Messiah the (AZ)Prince, there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be restored and rebuilt, with [w]plaza and moat, even in times of distress. 26 Then after the sixty-two weeks the [x]Messiah will be (BA)cut off and have [y]nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will (BB)destroy the city and the sanctuary. And [z]its end will come with a (BC)flood; even to the end [aa]there will be war; desolations are decreed. 27 And he will make a [ab]firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will make sacrifice and grain offering cease; and on the wing of [ac](BD)abominations will come one who [ad]makes desolate, even until a (BE)complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who [ae]makes desolate.”

Daniel’s Terrifying Vision of a Man

10 In the third year of (BF)Cyrus king of Persia, a word was revealed to (BG)Daniel, who was named Belteshazzar; and the (BH)word was true and one of great [af]conflict, but he understood the word and had an (BI)understanding of what had appeared.

In those days, I, Daniel, had been (BJ)mourning for three entire [ag]weeks. I (BK)did not eat any [ah]tasty food, nor did meat or wine enter my mouth, nor did I use any ointment at all until the entire three [ai]weeks were fulfilled.

And on the twenty-fourth day of the first month, while I was by the bank of the great (BL)river, that is, the [aj]Tigris, I lifted my eyes and looked, and behold, there was a certain man (BM)dressed in linen, whose loins were (BN)girded with a belt of pure (BO)fine gold of Uphaz. His body also was like [ak]beryl, his face [al]had the appearance of lightning, (BP)his eyes were like flaming torches, his arms and feet like the gleam of burnished bronze, and the sound of his words like the sound of a multitude. Now I, Daniel, (BQ)alone saw the vision that appeared, but the (BR)men who were with me did not see the vision that appeared; nevertheless, a great (BS)terror fell on them, and they ran away to hide themselves. So I alone (BT)remained and saw this great vision that appeared; yet (BU)no might remained in me, for my outward splendor turned to [am]a deathly pallor, and I retained no might. But I heard the sound of his words; and as soon as I heard the sound of his words, I (BV)fell into a deep sleep on my face, with my face to the ground.

Daniel Is Strengthened

10 Then behold, a hand (BW)touched me and set me shaking on my [an]hands and knees. 11 And he said to me, “O (BX)Daniel, man of [ao]high esteem, (BY)understand the words that I am about to speak to you and (BZ)stand [ap]upright, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he had spoken this word to me, I stood up (CA)trembling. 12 Then he said to me, “(CB)Do not be afraid, Daniel, for from the first day that you gave your heart to understand this and to (CC)humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response (CD)to your words. 13 But the [aq]prince of the kingdom of Persia was [ar]standing against me for twenty-one days; then behold, (CE)Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me. Now I had been left there with the kings of Persia. 14 Now I have come to (CF)give you an understanding of what will happen to your people in the [as](CG)last days, for the vision pertains to (CH)the days yet future.” 15 Now when he had spoken to me according to these words, I [at]turned my face toward the ground and became (CI)speechless.

16 And behold, (CJ)one [au]in the likeness of the sons of men was (CK)touching my lips; then I opened my mouth and spoke and said to him who was standing before me, “O my lord, as a result of the vision that appeared, (CL)pains have come upon me, and I have retained no might. 17 Now (CM)how can such a servant of my lord talk with such as my lord? As for me, right now (CN)no might stands within me, nor does any breath remain within me.”

18 Then this one with the appearance of a man touched me again and (CO)strengthened me. 19 And he said, “O man of [av]high esteem, (CP)do not be afraid. Peace [aw]be with you; gather (CQ)strength and be strong!” Now as soon as he spoke to me, I received strength and said, “May my lord speak, for you have (CR)strengthened me.” 20 Then he said, “Do you know why I came to you? But I shall now return to fight against the [ax]prince of Persia; so I am going forth, and behold, the [ay](CS)prince of [az]Greece is about to come. 21 However, I will tell you what is [ba]inscribed in the writing of (CT)truth. Now there is no one who [bb]exerts strength with me against these forces except (CU)Michael your prince.

Kingdoms and Wars

11 “Now I, in the (CV)first year of Darius the Mede, [bc]I stood to strengthen and to be a fortress for him. So now I will tell you the (CW)truth. Behold, three more kings are going to stand [bd]in Persia. Then a fourth will gain far more riches than all of them; as soon as he becomes strong through his riches, [be]he will arouse the whole empire against the kingdom of [bf](CX)Greece. And a (CY)mighty king will stand, and he will [bg]dominate with great [bh]domination and (CZ)do as he pleases. But as soon as he stands, his kingdom will be broken up and parceled out (DA)toward the (DB)four winds of [bi]heaven, but not to his own descendants, nor according to his [bj]domination with which he [bk]dominated, for his kingdom will be (DC)uprooted and given to others besides [bl]them.

“Then the (DD)king of the South will grow strong, [bm]along with one of his princes [bn]who will grow strong over him and [bo]obtain dominion; indeed, his [bp]domain will be a great [bq]dominion. And [br]after some years they will form an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the South will come to the (DE)king of the North to carry out [bs]an equitable arrangement. But she will not retain her [bt]position of power, nor will he continue to stand with his [bu]power, but she will be given up, along with those who brought her in and the one who fathered her as well as he who strengthened her in those times. But one of the [bv]descendants of her line will stand in his place, and he will come against their military force and enter the (DF)fortress of the king of the North, and he will deal with them and display strength. And also their (DG)gods with their [bw]metal images and their desirable vessels of silver and gold he will bring into captivity to Egypt, and he on his part will stand back from attacking the king of the North for some years. Then [bx]the latter will enter the kingdom of the king of the South, but will return to his own land.

10 “And his sons will wage war. So they will gather a multitude of great forces; and one of them will keep on coming and (DH)overflow and pass through, that he may [by]again wage war up to his very fortress. 11 And the (DI)king of the South will be enraged and go forth and fight [bz]with the king of the North. Then the latter will cause a great multitude to stand, but that multitude will be given into [ca]the hand of the former. 12 Then the multitude will be carried away, his heart will be lifted up, and he will cause tens of thousands to fall; yet he will not prevail. 13 And the king of the North will again cause a much greater multitude than the former to stand, and at the (DJ)end of the times of those years, he will keep on coming with a great military force and much equipment.

14 “Now in those times many will stand against the king of the South; the violent ones among your people will also lift themselves up in order to cause the vision to stand, but they will [cb]fall down. 15 Then the king of the North will come, cast up a (DK)siege ramp, and capture a well-fortified city; and the might of the South will not stand, not even [cc]their choicest troops, for there will be no strength to make a stand. 16 But he who comes against him will (DL)do as he pleases, and (DM)no one will be able to stand in [cd]opposition to him; he will also stand for a time in the [ce](DN)Beautiful Land, with destruction in his hand. 17 And he will (DO)set his face to come with the authority of his whole kingdom, [cf]bringing with him [cg]an equitable proposal which he will [ch]put into effect; he will also give him the daughter of women to destroy it. But she will not take a stand for him or be [ci]on his side. 18 Then he will turn his face to the (DP)coastlands and capture many. But a ruler will make his reproach against him cease; moreover, he will (DQ)repay him for his reproach. 19 So he will turn his face toward the fortresses of his own land, but he will (DR)stumble and fall and be (DS)found no more.

20 “Then in his place one will stand who will (DT)have an [cj]oppressor pass through the [ck]Jewel of his kingdom; yet within a few days he will be broken, though not in anger nor in battle. 21 And in his place a despised person will stand, to whom the splendor of the kingdom has not been given, but he will come in a time of ease and (DU)take hold of the kingdom by intrigue. 22 But the overflowing [cl](DV)might will be flooded away before him and broken, and also the prince of the covenant. 23 And after an alliance is made with him, he will [cm]practice deception, and he will go up and gain power with a small force of people. 24 [cn]In a time of ease he will enter the (DW)richest parts of the province, and he will do what his fathers never did, nor his fathers’ fathers; he will distribute plunder, spoil, and possessions among them, and he will devise his schemes against strongholds, but only for a time. 25 And he will stir up his strength and heart against the (DX)king of the South with a great military force; so the king of the South will wage war with an extremely large and mighty military force for war; but he will not stand, for schemes will be devised against him. 26 And those who eat his choice food will break him, and his military force will [co](DY)overflow, but many will fall down slain. 27 And as for both kings, their hearts will be intent on (DZ)evil, and they will (EA)speak falsehood at the same table; but it will not succeed, for the (EB)end is still to come at the appointed time. 28 Then he will return to his land with great possessions; but his heart will be set against the holy covenant, and he will take action and then return to his own land.

29 “At the appointed time he will return and come into the South, but [cp]this last time it will not happen the way it did before. 30 Indeed, ships of [cq](EC)Kittim will come against him; therefore he will be disheartened and will return and become indignant at the holy covenant and take action; so he will come back and show regard for those who forsake the holy covenant. 31 Mighty forces from him will stand, (ED)profane the sanctuary fortress, and abolish the regular sacrifice. And they will set up the (EE)abomination [cr]of desolation. 32 And by (EF)smooth words he will [cs]turn to godlessness those who act wickedly toward the covenant, but the people who know their God will display (EG)strength and take action. 33 And [ct](EH)those who have insight among the people will give understanding to the many; yet they will (EI)fall by sword and by flame, by captivity and by plunder for many days. 34 Now when they fall, they will be granted a little help, and many will (EJ)join with them in [cu](EK)intrigue. 35 And some of [cv]those who have insight will fall, in order to (EL)refine, (EM)purge, and make them [cw](EN)pure until the time of the (EO)end, because it is still to come at the appointed time.

36 “Then the king will (EP)do as he pleases, and he will exalt and (EQ)magnify himself above every god and will (ER)speak [cx]astonishing things against the (ES)God of gods; and he will succeed until the (ET)indignation is finished, for that which is (EU)decreed will be done. 37 He will show no regard for the [cy]gods of his fathers or for the desire of women, nor will he show regard for any other god; for he will magnify himself above them all. 38 But [cz]instead he will honor a god of fortresses, a god whom his fathers did not know; he will honor him with gold, silver, costly stones, and desirable things. 39 And he will take action against the strongest of fortresses with the help of a foreign god; he will give great honor to [da]those who recognize him and will cause them to rule over the many and will apportion land for a price.

40 “And at (EV)the time of the end, the (EW)king of the South will collide with him, and the (EX)king of the North will (EY)storm against him with chariots, with horsemen, and with many ships; and he will enter lands, (EZ)overflow them, and pass through. 41 And he will also enter the [db](FA)Beautiful Land, and many countries will fall; but these will be rescued out of his hand: Edom, (FB)Moab, and the foremost of the sons of (FC)Ammon. 42 Then he will send forth his hand against other countries, and the land of Egypt will not escape. 43 But he will rule over the hidden treasures of gold and silver and over all the desirable things of Egypt; and (FD)Libyans and (FE)Ethiopians will follow at his [dc]heels. 44 But reports from the East and from the North will dismay him, and he will go forth with great wrath to destroy and [dd]devote many to destruction. 45 And he will pitch the tents of his royal pavilion between the seas and the beautiful (FF)Holy Mountain; yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him.

The End of the Days

12 “Now at that time, (FG)Michael, the great prince who stands guard over the sons of your people, will stand. And there will be a (FH)time of distress (FI)such as never happened since there was a nation until that time; and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the (FJ)book, will be rescued. (FK)And many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, (FL)these to everlasting life, but the others to reproach and everlasting [de]contempt. [df]And those who have (FM)insight will (FN)shine brightly like the brightness of the [dg]expanse of heaven, and those who (FO)lead the many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. But as for you, Daniel, (FP)conceal these words and (FQ)seal up the book until the (FR)time of the end; (FS)many will go to and fro, and knowledge will increase.”

Then I, Daniel, looked, and behold, two others were standing, one on this bank of the river and the other on that bank of the river. And (FT)one said to the man (FU)dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, “(FV)How long will it be until the end of these wonders?” And I heard the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, [dh]as he (FW)raised his right hand and his left toward heaven, and swore by (FX)Him who lives forever that it would be for a [di](FY)time, [dj]times, and half a [dk]time; and as soon as [dl]they complete (FZ)shattering the [dm]power of the holy people, all these events will be completed. As for me, I heard but could not understand; so I said, “My lord, what will be the [dn]outcome of these events?” Then he said, “Go your way, Daniel, for these words are concealed and (GA)sealed up until the time of the end. 10 (GB)Many will be purged, [do]purified, and refined, but the (GC)wicked will act wickedly; and none of the wicked will understand, but [dp]those who (GD)have insight will understand. 11 But from the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished and the [dq](GE)abomination of desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. 12 How (GF)blessed is he who keeps waiting and reaches the (GG)1,335 days! 13 But as for you, go your way to the [dr]end; then you will enter into (GH)rest and stand again for your (GI)allotted portion at the end of the days.”

Hosea’s Wife and Children

The word of [ds]Yahweh which came to (GJ)Hosea the son of Beeri, in the days of (GK)Uzziah, (GL)Jotham, (GM)Ahaz, and (GN)Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of (GO)Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

When Yahweh first spoke through Hosea, Yahweh said to Hosea, “(GP)Go, take for yourself a wife of harlotry and have children of harlotry; for (GQ)the land commits flagrant harlotry, [dt]forsaking Yahweh.” So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and (GR)gave birth to a son for him. And Yahweh said to him, “Name him (GS)Jezreel; for yet a little while, and (GT)I will visit the bloodshed of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and (GU)I will cause the kingdom of the house of Israel to cease. And it will be in that day, that I will (GV)break the bow of Israel in the (GW)valley of Jezreel.”

Then she conceived again and gave birth to a daughter. And [du]Yahweh said to him, “Name her [dv]Lo-ruhamah, for I will no longer (GX)have compassion on the house of Israel, that I would ever forgive them. But I will have (GY)compassion on the house of Judah and (GZ)save them by Yahweh their God, and I will not save them by (HA)bow, sword, battle, horses, or horsemen.”

Then she weaned Lo-ruhamah. And she conceived and gave birth to a son. And [dw]Yahweh said, “Name him [dx]Lo-ammi, for you are not My people, and I am not [dy]your God.”

10 [dz]Yet the number of the sons of Israel
Will be like the (HB)sand of the sea,
Which cannot be measured or numbered;
And it will be that (HC)in the place
Where it is said to them,
“You are (HD)not My people,”
It will be said to them,
You are the (HE)sons of the living God.”
11 And the (HF)sons of Judah and the sons of Israel will be (HG)gathered together,
And they will set for themselves (HH)one head,
And they will go up from the land,
For great will be the day of Jezreel.

No Compassion for Children of Harlotry

[ea]Say to your brothers, “[eb]Ammi,” and to your sisters, “[ec]Ruhamah.”

“Contend with your mother, (HI)contend,
For she is (HJ)not my wife, and I am not her husband;
And let her remove her (HK)harlotry from her face
And her adultery from between her breasts,
Lest I strip her (HL)naked
And set her forth as on the (HM)day when she was born
And (HN)make her like a wilderness
And [ed]make her like dry land
And put her to death with (HO)thirst.
Also, I will have no compassion on her children
Because they are (HP)children of harlotry.
For their mother has (HQ)played the harlot;
She who conceived them has acted shamefully.
For she said, ‘(HR)I will go after my lovers,
Who (HS)give me my bread and my water,
My wool and my flax, my (HT)oil and my drink.’
Therefore, behold, I will (HU)hedge up [ee]her way with (HV)thorns,
And I will build [ef]a wall against her so that she cannot find her (HW)paths.
So she will (HX)pursue her lovers, but she will not overtake them;
And she will seek them, but will not find them.
Then she will say, ‘(HY)I will go, and I will return to my (HZ)first husband,
For it was (IA)better for me then than now!’

“Now she does (IB)not know that it was (IC)I who gave her the grain, the new wine, and the oil,
And multiplied silver and gold for her,
Which they [eg]used for Baal.
Therefore, I will (ID)take back My grain at [eh]harvest time
And My new wine in its season.
I will also deliver My wool and My flax from them
Given to cover her nakedness.
10 So now I will (IE)uncover her lewdness
In the sight of her lovers,
And no one will deliver her out of My hand.
11 I will also (IF)cease all her joy,
Her (IG)feasts, her (IH)new moons, her sabbaths,
And all her appointed times.
12 And I will (II)make desolate her vines and fig trees,
Of which she said, ‘These are my wages
Which my lovers have given me.’
And I will (IJ)make them a forest,
And the (IK)beasts of the field will devour them.
13 So I will visit the (IL)days of the Baals upon her
When she used to [ei](IM)offer offerings in smoke to them
And (IN)adorn herself with her [ej]earrings and jewelry
And go after her lovers, so that she (IO)forgot Me,” declares Yahweh.

Yahweh’s Faithful Betrothal

14 “Therefore, behold, I will allure her
(IP)And bring her into the wilderness
And speak to her heart.
15 Then I will give her her (IQ)vineyards from there
And (IR)the valley of Achor as a door of hope.
And she will [ek](IS)sing there as in the days of her youth,
As in the (IT)day when she came up from the land of Egypt.
16 And it will be in that day,” declares Yahweh,
That you will call Me [el](IU)Ishi
And will no longer call Me [em]Baali.
17 So (IV)I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth
So that they will be remembered by their names no more.
18 And in that day I will cut a covenant for them
With the (IW)beasts of the field,
The birds of the sky,
And the creeping things of the ground.
And I will (IX)break the bow, the sword, and war from the land,
And I will make them (IY)lie down in security.
19 And I will (IZ)betroth you to Me forever;
Indeed, I will betroth you to Me in (JA)righteousness and in justice,
In lovingkindness and in compassion,
20 And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness.
Then you will (JB)know Yahweh.

21 “And it will be in that day, that (JC)I will answer,” declares Yahweh.
“I will answer the heavens, and they will answer the earth,
22 And the (JD)earth will answer the grain, the new wine, and the oil,
And they will answer [en]Jezreel.
23 And I will (JE)sow her for Myself in the land.
(JF)I will also have compassion on [eo]her who had not obtained compassion,
And (JG)I will say to [ep]those who were (JH)not My people,
‘You are My people!’
And [eq]they will say, ‘You are my God!’”

Hosea Marries Again

Then Yahweh said to me, “Go again, love a [er]woman who is loved by her companion and is an adulteress, even (JI)as Yahweh loves the sons of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love raisin (JJ)cakes.” So I (JK)bargained for her for myself for fifteen [es]shekels of silver and a [et]homer and a [eu]half of barley. Then I said to her, “You shall (JL)stay with me for many days. You shall not play the harlot, nor shall you have a [ev]man; so I will also be toward you.” For the sons of Israel will remain for many days (JM)without king or prince, (JN)without sacrifice or sacred (JO)pillar, and without (JP)ephod or [ew](JQ)household idols. Afterward the sons of Israel will (JR)return and seek Yahweh their God and (JS)David their king; and (JT)they will come [ex]in dread to Yahweh and to His goodness in the last days.

Yahweh’s Contention with Israel

(JU)Listen to the word of Yahweh, O sons of Israel,
For Yahweh has a (JV)contention against the inhabitants of the land,
Because there is (JW)no truth or [ey]lovingkindness
Or (JX)knowledge of God in the land.
There is (JY)swearing of oaths, (JZ)deception, (KA)murder, (KB)stealing, and (KC)adultery.
They break forth in violence so that (KD)bloodshed [ez]follows bloodshed.
Therefore the land (KE)mourns,
And everyone who inhabits it languishes
Along with the beasts of the field and the birds of the sky,
And also the fish of the sea [fa]disappear.

Yet let no man (KF)contend, and let no man offer reproof;
Indeed, your people are like those who (KG)contend with the priest.
So you will (KH)stumble by day,
And the prophet also will stumble with you by night;
And I will destroy your (KI)mother.
(KJ)My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
Because you have (KK)rejected knowledge,
I also will (KL)reject you from ministering as My priest.
Since you have (KM)forgotten the (KN)law of your God,
I Myself also will forget your children.

The more they (KO)multiplied, the more they sinned against Me;
I will (KP)change their glory into disgrace.
They (KQ)eat the [fb]sin of My people
And (KR)lift up [fc]their soul toward their iniquity.
And it will be like people, (KS)like priest;
So I will (KT)punish them for their ways
And cause their deeds to return to them.
10 (KU)They will eat, but not be satisfied;
They will (KV)play the harlot, but not break forth in number,
Because they have [fd](KW)forsaken Yahweh to keep harlotry.

11 Harlotry, (KX)wine, and new wine take away a heart of wisdom.
12 My people (KY)ask their wooden idol, and their diviner’s wand declares to them;
For a spirit of harlotry has led them astray,
And they have played the harlot, departing [fe]from their God.
13 They offer sacrifices on the (KZ)tops of the mountains
And [ff](LA)burn incense on the hills,
(LB)Under oak, poplar, and terebinth
Because their shade is good.
Therefore your daughters play the harlot,
And your [fg]brides commit adultery.
14 I will not punish your daughters when they play the harlot
Or your [fh]brides when they commit adultery,
For the men themselves go apart with harlots
And offer sacrifices with (LC)cult prostitutes;
So the people without understanding are [fi]ruined.

15 Though you, Israel, play the harlot,
Do not let Judah become guilty;
Also do not go to (LD)Gilgal
Nor go up to Beth-aven
(LE)And swear the oath:
“As Yahweh lives!”
16 Since Israel is (LF)stubborn
Like a stubborn heifer,
[fj]Can Yahweh now (LG)feed them
Like a lamb in a large field?
17 Ephraim is joined to (LH)idols;
(LI)Let him alone.
18 Their drink gone;
They play the harlot continually;
(LJ)Their [fk]rulers dearly love disgrace.
19 (LK)The wind binds them up in its wings,
And they will be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

Yahweh Withdraws from Israel

Hear this, O priests!
Give heed, O house of Israel!
Give ear, O house of the king!
For the judgment is for you,
For you have been a (LL)snare at Mizpah
And a net spread out on Tabor.
And the (LM)revolters have (LN)dug deep into slaughtering,
But I will chastise all of them.
I (LO)know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me;
For now, O Ephraim, you have played the harlot;
Israel has defiled itself.
Their deeds will not allow them
To return to their God.
For a (LP)spirit of harlotry is within them,
And they (LQ)do not know Yahweh.
Moreover, the (LR)pride of Israel answers against him,
And Israel and Ephraim stumble in their iniquity;
(LS)Judah also has stumbled with them.
They will (LT)go with their flocks and herds
To seek Yahweh, but they will (LU)not find Him;
He has (LV)withdrawn from them.
They have (LW)dealt treacherously against Yahweh,
For they have borne (LX)children of strangers.
Now the (LY)new moon will devour them with their portions.

(LZ)Blow the horn in (MA)Gibeah,
The trumpet in Ramah.
Make a loud shout at Beth-aven:
(MB)Behind you, Benjamin!”
Ephraim will become a (MC)desolation in the (MD)day of reproof;
Among the tribes of Israel I (ME)will make known what is true.
10 The princes of Judah have become like those who (MF)move a boundary;
On them I will (MG)pour out My wrath (MH)like water.
11 Ephraim is (MI)oppressed, crushed in judgment,
(MJ)Because he was determined to [fl]walk after man’s command.
12 Therefore I am like a (MK)moth to Ephraim
And like rottenness to the house of Judah.
13 Then Ephraim saw his sickness,
And Judah his sore,
So Ephraim went to (ML)Assyria
And sent to [fm](MM)King Jareb.
But he is (MN)unable to heal you
Or to cure you of your sore.
14 For I will be (MO)like a lion to Ephraim
And like a young lion to the house of Judah.
(MP)I, even I, will tear to pieces and go away;
I will carry away, and there will be (MQ)none to deliver.
15 I will go away and return to My place
Until they [fn](MR)acknowledge their guilt and seek My face;
In their affliction they will (MS)seek Me earnestly.

Israel Chastised

(MT)Come, let us return to Yahweh.
For (MU)He has torn us, but (MV)He will heal us;
He has struck us, but He will (MW)bandage us.
He will (MX)make us alive after two days;
He will (MY)raise us up on the third day,
That we may live before Him.
So let us (MZ)know, let us pursue to know Yahweh.
His (NA)going forth is established as the dawn;
And He will come to us like the (NB)rain,
Like the [fo]late rain watering the earth.”

What shall I do with you, O (NC)Ephraim?
What shall I do with you, O Judah?
For your lovingkindness is like a (ND)morning cloud
And like the dew which goes away early.
Therefore I have (NE)hewn them in pieces by the prophets;
I have killed them by the (NF)words of My mouth;
And the judgments on you are like the light that goes forth.
For (NG)I delight in lovingkindness (NH)rather than sacrifice,
And in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
But (NI)like [fp]Adam they have (NJ)trespassed against the covenant;
There they have (NK)dealt treacherously against Me.
(NL)Gilead is a city of workers of iniquity,
With a track of (NM)blood.
And as (NN)raiders wait for a man,
So a band of priests (NO)murder on the way to Shechem;
Surely they have committed (NP)lewdness.
10 In the house of Israel I have seen an (NQ)appalling thing;
Ephraim’s (NR)harlotry is there; Israel has defiled itself.
11 Also, O Judah, there is a (NS)harvest set for you
When I (NT)restore the fortunes of My people,

When I (NU)would heal Israel,
Then the iniquity of Ephraim is uncovered,
And the evil deeds of Samaria,
For they work (NV)falsehood;
The thief enters in;
(NW)Raiders [fq]ransack outside,
And they do not say to their hearts
That I (NX)remember all their evil.
Now their (NY)deeds are all around them;
They are before My face.
(NZ)With their evil they make the (OA)king glad,
And the princes with their (OB)deceptions.
They are (OC)all adulterers,
Like an oven heated by the baker
Who ceases to stir up the fire
From the kneading of the dough until it is leavened.
On the [fr]day of our king, the princes (OD)became sick with the heat of wine;
He stretched out his hand with (OE)scoffers,
For their hearts are like an (OF)oven
As they draw near in their [fs]plotting;
Their [ft]anger [fu]smolders all night;
In the morning it burns like a flaming fire.
All of them are hot like an oven,
And they devour their (OG)judges;
All their kings have fallen.
(OH)None of them calls on Me.

Ephraim (OI)mixes himself with the peoples;
Ephraim has become a cake not turned.
(OJ)Strangers devour his power,
Yet he (OK)does not know it;
Gray hairs also are sprinkled on him,
Yet he does not know it.
10 So the (OL)pride of Israel answers against him,
Yet (OM)they have not returned to Yahweh their God,
Nor have they sought Him, for all this.
11 So (ON)Ephraim has become like a silly dove, (OO)without a heart of wisdom;
They call to (OP)Egypt; they go to (OQ)Assyria.
12 When they go, I will (OR)spread My net over them;
I will bring them down like the birds of the sky.
I will (OS)chastise them in accordance with the report to their congregation.
13 (OT)Woe to them, for they have (OU)fled from Me!
Destruction is theirs, for they have transgressed against Me!
And I (OV)would redeem them, but they speak lies against Me.
14 And (OW)they do not cry out to Me in their heart
When they wail on their beds;
For the sake of grain and new wine they [fv](OX)gather together as sojourners;
They (OY)depart from Me.
15 Although I disciplined and strengthened their arms,
Yet they (OZ)devise evil against Me.
16 They turn, but not [fw]upward;
They are like a (PA)deceitful bow;
Their princes will fall by the sword
Because of the [fx](PB)indignation of their tongue.
This will be their (PC)scoffing in the land of Egypt.

Israel Reaps the Whirlwind

(PD)Put the trumpet to your [fy]mouth!
(PE)Like an eagle the enemy comes (PF)against the house of Yahweh
Because they have (PG)trespassed against My covenant
And transgressed against My (PH)law.
(PI)They cry out to Me,
“My God, (PJ)we of Israel know You!”
Israel has rejected the good;
The enemy will pursue him.
(PK)They have set up kings, but not by Me;
They have appointed princes, but I did not know it.
With their (PL)silver and gold they have made idols for themselves,
That [fz]they might be cut off.
[ga]He has rejected your (PM)calf, O Samaria, saying,
“My anger burns against them!”
How long will they be incapable of (PN)innocence?
For from Israel is even this!
A (PO)craftsman made it, so it is not God;
Surely the calf of Samaria will be smashed to splinters.
For (PP)they sow the wind,
And they reap the (PQ)whirlwind.
The standing grain has no growth;
It makes (PR)no flour.
Should it make anything, strangers would swallow it up.

Israel is (PS)swallowed up;
They are now among the nations
Like a (PT)vessel in which no one delights.
For they have gone up to (PU)Assyria
Like (PV)a wild donkey all alone;
Ephraim has (PW)hired [gb]lovers.
10 Even though they hire allies among the nations,
Now I will (PX)gather them up;
And they will begin (PY)to [gc]diminish
Because of the burden of the (PZ)king of princes.

11 Since Ephraim has (QA)multiplied altars for sin,
They have become altars of sinning for him.
12 Though (QB)I wrote for him ten thousand precepts of My (QC)law,
They are counted as a strange thing.
13 As for My (QD)sacrificial gifts,
They (QE)sacrifice the flesh and eat it,
But Yahweh has not accepted them.
Now He will (QF)remember their iniquity
And (QG)punish them for their sins;
They will return to (QH)Egypt.
14 So Israel has (QI)forgotten his Maker and (QJ)built palaces;
And Judah has multiplied fortified cities,
But I will send a (QK)fire on its cities that it may consume its palatial dwellings.

Days of Punishment Have Come

(QL)Do not be glad, O Israel, [gd]with rejoicing like the peoples!
For you have (QM)played the harlot, [ge]forsaking your God.
You have loved harlots’ earnings on [gf]every threshing floor.
Threshing floor and wine press will (QN)not feed them,
And the new wine will deceive [gg]them.
They will not remain in (QO)the land of Yahweh,
But Ephraim will return to (QP)Egypt,
And in (QQ)Assyria they will eat (QR)unclean food.
They will not pour out drink offerings of (QS)wine to Yahweh;
(QT)Their sacrifices will not please Him.
Their bread will [gh]be like [gi]mourners’ bread;
All who eat of it will be (QU)defiled,
For their bread will be for [gj]themselves alone;
It will not enter the house of Yahweh.
(QV)What will you do on the day of the appointed festival
And on the day of the (QW)feast of Yahweh?
For behold, they will go because of destruction;
Egypt will gather them up; (QX)Memphis will bury them.
Weeds will possess their desirable items of silver;
(QY)Thorns will be in their tents.

The days of (QZ)punishment have come;
The days of (RA)recompense have come;
[gk]Let Israel know this!
The prophet is an (RB)ignorant fool,
The [gl]inspired man has (RC)madness,
Because of the abundance of your (RD)iniquity
And because your hostility has abounded.
Ephraim was a watchman with my God, a prophet;
Yet the snare of a bird catcher is in all his ways,
And there is only hostility in the house of his God.
They have dug (RE)deep [gm]in corruption
As in the days of (RF)Gibeah;
He will (RG)remember their iniquity;
He will punish their sins.

Grapes in the Wilderness

10 I found Israel like (RH)grapes in the wilderness;
I saw your fathers as the (RI)earliest fruit on the fig tree in its first season.
But they came to (RJ)Baal-peor and devoted themselves to [gn](RK)shame,
And they became as (RL)detestable as that which they loved.
11 As for Ephraim, their (RM)glory will fly away like a bird—
No birth, no pregnancy, and no conception!
12 Though they bring up their children,
Yet I will bereave them [go]until not a man is left.
Surely, (RN)woe to them indeed when I depart from them!
13 Ephraim, as I have seen,
Is planted in a pasture like (RO)Tyre;
But Ephraim will bring out his children for killing.
14 Give them, O Yahweh—what will You give?
Give them a [gp](RP)miscarrying womb and dry breasts.

15 All their evil is at (RQ)Gilgal;
Indeed, I came to hate them there!
Because of the (RR)evil of their deeds
I will drive them out of My house!
I will love them no more;
All their princes are (RS)rebels.
16 (RT)Ephraim is stricken; their root is dried up;
They will bear (RU)no fruit.
Even though they bear children,
I will put to death the (RV)desirable ones of their womb.
17 My God will despise them
Because they have (RW)not listened to Him;
And they will be (RX)those who flee among the nations.

You Have Sinned, O Israel

10 Israel is a [gq]luxuriant (RY)vine;
He produces fruit for himself.
The more abundant his fruit,
The more altars he (RZ)abounded;
The better his land,
The better [gr]he made the sacred (SA)pillars.
Their heart is [gs](SB)faithless;
Now they must bear their (SC)guilt.
[gt]Yahweh will (SD)break down their altars
And destroy their sacred pillars.

Surely now they will say, “We have (SE)no king,
For we do not fear Yahweh.
As for the king, what can he do for us?”
They speak mere words;
[gu]With (SF)worthless oaths they cut covenants;
And (SG)judgment flourishes like gall in the furrows of the field.
The dweller of Samaria will fear
For the [gv](SH)calf of (SI)Beth-aven.
Indeed, its people will mourn for it,
And its (SJ)idolatrous priests [gw]will cry out over it,
Over its (SK)glory, since it has gone into exile from them.
The thing itself will be carried to (SL)Assyria
As tribute to [gx](SM)King Jareb;
Ephraim will (SN)receive shame,
And Israel will be ashamed of its (SO)own counsel.
Samaria will be (SP)ruined with her king
Like a stick on the surface of the water.
Also the (SQ)high places of Aven, the (SR)sin of Israel, will be [gy]eradicated;
(SS)Thorn and thistle will grow on their altars;
Then they will (ST)say to the mountains,
“Cover us!” And to the hills, “Fall on us!”
From the days of Gibeah you have sinned, O Israel;
There they stand!
Will not the battle against the sons of injustice overtake them in Gibeah?
10 When it is My (SU)desire, I will [gz](SV)chastise them;
And (SW)the peoples will be gathered against them
When they are bound for their double guilt.

The Trained Heifer

11 And Ephraim is a trained (SX)heifer that loves to thresh,
But I will (SY)come over her fair neck with a yoke;
I will harness Ephraim;
Judah will plow; Jacob will harrow for himself.
12 (SZ)Sow with a view to righteousness,
Reap in accordance with lovingkindness;
(TA)Break up your fallow ground,
Indeed, it is time to (TB)seek Yahweh
Until He (TC)comes and [ha](TD)rains righteousness on you.
13 You have (TE)plowed wickedness; you have reaped injustice;
You have eaten the fruit of (TF)deception.
Because you have trusted in your way, in your (TG)abundant warriors,
14 Therefore a rumbling will arise among your people,
And all your (TH)fortifications will be destroyed,
As Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle,
When (TI)mothers were dashed in pieces with their children.
15 Thus it will be done to you at Bethel because of your evil of evils.
At dawn the king of Israel will be completely ruined.

The Beloved Son

11 When Israel was a youth I loved him,
And (TJ)out of Egypt I (TK)called My son.
The more [hb](TL)they called them,
The more they went from [hc]them;
They kept (TM)sacrificing to the Baals
And (TN)burning incense to graven images.
Yet it is I who taught Ephraim to walk;
[hd]I (TO)took them in My arms;
But they did not know that I (TP)healed them.
I (TQ)led them with cords of a man, with bonds of love,
And (TR)I became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws;
And I bent down and (TS)fed them.

[he]They will not return to the land of Egypt;
But Assyria—he will be [hf]their king
Because they (TT)refused to return to Me.
And the (TU)sword will whirl against [hg]their cities
And will consume [hh]their gate bars
And (TV)devour them because of their (TW)counsels.
So My people are hung up on (TX)turning from Me.
Though [hi]they call [hj]them to the One on high,
None at all exalts Him.

(TY)How can I give you up, O Ephraim?
How can I surrender you, O Israel?
How can I give you over to be like (TZ)Admah?
How can I make you like (UA)Zeboiim?
My heart is turned over within Me;
[hk]All My compassions are stirred.
I will (UB)not execute My burning anger;
I will not make Ephraim a ruin (UC)again.
For (UD)I am God and not man, the (UE)Holy One in your midst,
And I will not come in [hl]wrath.
10 They will (UF)walk after Yahweh;
He will (UG)roar like a lion;
Indeed, He will roar,
And His sons will come (UH)trembling from the west.
11 They will come trembling like birds from (UI)Egypt
And like (UJ)doves from the land of (UK)Assyria;
And I will (UL)settle them in their houses, declares Yahweh.

12 [hm]Ephraim surrounds Me with [hn](UM)lies
And the house of Israel with deceit;
And Judah is also unruly against God,
Even against the Holy One who is faithful.

12 [ho]Ephraim feeds on (UN)wind
And pursues the (UO)east wind continually;
He abounds in falsehood and destruction.
Moreover, [hp]he cuts a covenant with Assyria,
And oil is carried to Egypt.

Yahweh’s Contention with Judah

And Yahweh has a (UP)contention with Judah
And will punish Jacob (UQ)according to his ways;
He will cause everything to return to him according to his deeds.
In the womb he (UR)took his brother by the heel,
And in his maturity he [hq](US)wrestled with God.
Indeed, he [hr]wrestled with the angel and prevailed;
He wept and (UT)sought His favor.
He found Him at (UU)Bethel,
And there He spoke with us,
Even Yahweh, the God of hosts,
Yahweh is His [hs](UV)name of remembrance.
Therefore, (UW)return to your God,
(UX)Keep lovingkindness and justice,
And (UY)hope in your God continually.
A [ht]merchant, in whose hands are deceptive (UZ)balances,
He loves to oppress.
And Ephraim said, “Surely I have become (VA)rich;
I have found wealth for myself;
In all my labors they will find in me
(VB)No iniquity, which would be sin.”
But I have been Yahweh your God since the land of Egypt;
I will make you (VC)settle in tents again,
As in the days of the appointed festival.
10 And I have spoken to the (VD)prophets,
And I [hu]made visions abound,
And by the hand of the prophets I gave (VE)parables.
11 Is there wickedness in Gilead?
Surely they are worthless.
In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls;
Yes, (VF)their altars are like the stone heaps
Beside the furrows of the field.

12 Now (VG)Jacob fled to the field of Aram,
And (VH)Israel worked for a wife,
And for a wife he kept sheep.
13 But by a (VI)prophet Yahweh brought Israel up from Egypt,
And by a prophet he was kept.
14 (VJ)Ephraim has provoked to bitter anger;
So his Lord will leave his (VK)bloodguilt on him
And cause his (VL)reproach to return to him.

Ephraim’s Idolatry

13 (VM)When Ephraim [hv]spoke, there was trembling.
He (VN)lifted himself up in Israel,
But through (VO)Baal he became guilty and died.
And now they sin more and more
And make for themselves (VP)molten images,
Idols (VQ)made from their silver according to their understanding,
All of them the (VR)work of craftsmen.
They are saying of them, “Let the [hw]men who sacrifice kiss the (VS)calves!”
Therefore they will be like the (VT)morning cloud
And like dew which [hx]soon disappears,
Like (VU)chaff which is blown away from the threshing floor
And like (VV)smoke from a [hy]chimney.

Yet I have been (VW)Yahweh your God
Since the land of Egypt;
And you were not to know (VX)any god except Me,
And there is no savior (VY)besides Me.
I Myself (VZ)knew you in the wilderness,
(WA)In the land of drought.
As they had their pasture, then they became (WB)satisfied,
Indeed, they were satisfied, and their (WC)heart became raised up;
Therefore they (WD)forgot Me.
