Luke 9
Worldwide English (New Testament)

9 Jesus called his twelve disciples together. He gave them power over all the bad spirits, and power to heal sick people.

2 He sent them out to tell people about the kingdom of God and to heal sick people.

3 He said, `Take nothing with you for your trip. Do not take a walking stick, or a bag, or food, or money. And do not take two shirts.

4 When you go into a certain house, stay there until you leave the town.

5 Some people might not take you in. When you leave that town, shake the dust off your feet. That will be a sign to them.'

6 The disciples left and went through the towns. They told the good news and healed people everywhere.

7 Herod the ruler heard about all that was happening. He did not know what to think. Some people said John the Baptizer had risen from death.

8 Some people said Elijah had come back. And other people said that one of the old prophets of God had risen from death.

9 Herod said, `I cut off John's head. Now who is this man of whom I hear such things?' He wanted to see Jesus.

10 When the apostles came back, they told Jesus all they had done. He took them away with him and they went by themselves to a town called Bethsaida.

11 But the people found out and they followed him. He was glad to see them and talked to them about God's kingdom. He healed those who were sick.

12 When it was late in the day, the twelve disciples came to him. They said, `Send the people away so they can go to the towns and the farms to sleep and get something to eat. This is a lonely place.'

13 But Jesus said to them, `You give them food to eat.' They said, `All we have is five loaves of bread and two fish. Shall we go and buy food for all these people?'

14 There were about five thousand men. He said to his disciples, `Tell the people to sit down in groups of fifty.'

15 They did what he said, and they made all the people sit down.

16 He took the five loaves of bread and the two fish. He looked up to heaven and thanked God for them. Then he broke the bread. He gave it to the disciples to give to the people.

17 They all ate and had enough. They picked up twelve baskets full of pieces that were left.

18 One day Jesus was alone talking to God. His disciples were there too. He asked them, `Who do people say I am?'

19 They answered, `Some people say you are John the Baptizer. Others say you are Elijah. And others say that one of the old prophets of God has risen from death.'

20 Jesus said, `But who do you say I am?' Peter answered, `You are the Christ sent by God.'

21 Jesus said to them, `Do not tell this to anyone.'

22 Then he went on to say, `The Son of Man will have much trouble. The leaders of the people, the chief priests, and the scribes will not believe him. He will be killed. On the third day he will be raised from death.'

23 And He said to all the people, `If anyone wants to come with me, he must leave what he himself wants to do. Every day he must take up his cross [be ready to die] and come with me.

24 Anyone who tries to keep his life will lose it. And anyone who gives up his life for my sake will find it.

25 What good will it do a man if he gets the whole world for himself but loses his life or spoils it?

26 If anyone is ashamed of me and the things I say, the Son of man will be ashamed of that person when he comes. The Son of man will come with his holy angels and be great like his Father.

27 I tell you the truth. Some people are standing here who will not die before they see the kingdom of God.'

28 About eight days after saying these things, Jesus went up on a hill to talk with God. He took Peter, John, and James with him.

29 As he was talking with God, he was changed. His face was different. His clothes became very white and shining.

30 And then two men were talking with Jesus. They were Moses and Elijah.

31 Light was shining from them. They talked about his leaving this world. That would happen when he was in Jerusalem.

32 Peter and the others were very sleepy. They woke up and saw the light shining from Jesus. And they saw the two men standing with him.

33 When the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, `Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three places here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.' Peter did not know what he was saying.

34 As he said this, a cloud came over them. They were very much afraid when the cloud came around them.

35 A voice in the cloud said, `This is my dear Son. Listen to him!'

36 The talking stopped. Then Jesus was left alone. The disciples did not say anything. They did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.

37 The next day they came down the hill. Many people met him.

38 One man among them called out, `Teacher, I beg you, look at my son. He is my only child.

39 A bad spirit takes hold of him and he screams. It throws him around and makes him foam at his mouth. It beats him badly and does not want to leave him.

40 I begged your disciples to drive the bad spirit out, but they could not do it.'

41 Jesus said, `You people today do not believe. You have turned away from God. How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.'

42 While he was coming, the bad spirit knocked him down and threw him around. Jesus told the spirit to stop. He healed the boy and gave him back to his father.

43 All the people were surprised to see that God has so much power. While the people were wondering about everything Jesus did, he talked to his disciples.

44 He said, `Listen well to what I say. The Son of Man will be given over to men,'

45 But they did not understand what he said. The meaning was hidden from them so they would not understand it. And they were afraid to ask him about it.

46 The disciples started talking among themselves. They quarrelled about which of them was the greatest person.

47 Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he took a child and put him by his side.

48 Then he said, `If anyone takes in a child like this for my sake, he takes in me. And if anyone takes in me, he takes in the one who sent me. The one who takes the least or lowest place among you is the greatest.'

49 John answered, `Master, we saw a man driving bad spirits out of people. He was using your name. We told him to stop because he is not one of us.'

50 But Jesus said, `Do not stop him. Anyone who is not against you is on your side.'

51 The time was near for Jesus to be taken up to heaven. Then he started off for Jerusalem. He sent messengers ahead of him.

52 They went to one of the towns of the Samaritan people to get ready for him.

53 But the people would not take him in because he was going to Jerusalem.

54 When the disciples James and John saw that, they said, `Lord, do you want us to ask for fire to come down from the sky and burn them up?'

55 But he turned and said to them, `Stop that! You do not think about what kind of spirit you are showing.

56 The Son of Man did not come to kill people, but to save them.' And they went on to another town.

57 As they went along on the road, a man said to him, `I will go anywhere you go.'

58 Jesus said, `Foxes have holes to live in. Birds have nests. But the Son of Man has no place to lie down to rest.'

59 Jesus said to another man who followed him, `Come with me.' But the man said, `Lord, let me go first and bury my father.'

60 Jesus said to him, `Let those who are dead bury their own dead people. As for you, go and tell people about God's kingdom.'

61 Another man said to Jesus, `Sir, I will go with you. But let me go first to my home and tell them I am going.'

62 Jesus said to him, `Any person who starts doing something and then keeps looking back is not fit for the kingdom of God.'

9 ଯୀଶୁ ବାରଜଣ ପ୍ରେରିତଙ୍କୁ ଏକାଠି ଡାକିଲେ। ସେ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ଭୂତମାନଙ୍କ ଉପରେ କ୍ଷମତା ଓ ଅଧିକାର ପ୍ରଦାନ କଲେ। ସେ ପ୍ରେରିତମାନଙ୍କୁ ରୋଗ ଭଲ କରିଦେବା ପାଇଁ ମଧ୍ୟ ଶକ୍ତି ଦେଲେ। 2 ତା'ପରେ ସେ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ରାଜ୍ୟର ସୁସମାଗ୍ଭର ଶୁଣାଇବା ପାଇଁ ଓ ରୋଗୀମାନଙ୍କୁ ସୁସ୍ଥ କରିବା ପାଇଁ ପଠାଇଲେ। 3 ସେ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ କହିଲେ, “ଯାତ୍ରା ସମୟରେ ସାଙ୍ଗରେ କୌଣସି ପଦାର୍ଥ ନେବ ନାହିଁ। ଠେଙ୍ଗା, ଝୁଲା, ଖାଦ୍ୟ, ଟଙ୍କା ପଇସା କିମ୍ବା ଅଧିକ ଲୁଗାପଟା କିଛି ହେଲେ ନେବ ନାହିଁ। କେବଳ ପାନ୍ଧିଥିବା ଲୁଗା ଛଡ଼ା ଅନ୍ୟ କିଛି ନେବ ନାହିଁ। 4 ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ଯେଉଁ ଘରକୁ ଯିବ, ସେ ସ୍ଥାନ ଛାଡ଼ିବା ସମୟ ନ ହେବା ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ସେହିଠାରେ ରହିବ। 5 ଯଦି ନଗରର ଲୋକେ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କୁ ସ୍ୱାଗତ ନ କରନ୍ତି, ତେବେ ନଗର ଛାଡ଼ି ବାହାରକୁ ଗ୍ଭଲିଯିବ ଓ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କ ପାଦର ଧୂଳିତକ ମଧ୍ୟ ସେଠାରେ ଝାଡ଼ିଦେବ। ତେବେ ଏହା ସେମାନଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ ଚେତାବନୀ ହେବ।”

6 ପ୍ରେରିତମାନେ ବାହାରିଗଲେ। ସେମାନେ ସମସ୍ତେ ନଗର ଦେଇ ଯାତ୍ରା କଲେ। ସେମାନେ ସୁସମାଗ୍ଭର ଶୁଣାଇଲେ ଓ ସବୁ ଜାଗାରେ ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ ସୁସ୍ଥ କଲେ।

ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ବିଷୟରେ ହେରୋଦଙ୍କ ଭ୍ରମ

(ମାଥିଉ 14:1-12; ମାର୍କ 6:14-29)

7 ଇତି ମଧ୍ୟରେ ସାମନ୍ତ ରାଜା ହେରୋଦ ଏହି ଘଟଣାଗୁଡ଼ିକ ବିଷୟରେ ଶୁଣି ଗଭୀର ଚିନ୍ତାରେ ପଡ଼ିଗଲେ। କାରଣ କେତେକ ଲୋକ କହୁଥିଲେ, “ବାପ୍ତିଜକ ଯୋହନ ପୁଣି ମୃତ୍ୟୁରୁ ବଞ୍ଚି ଉଠିଛନ୍ତି।” 8 ଆଉ କେତେକ କହୁଥିଲେ, “ଏଲିୟ ଆମ୍ଭ ପାଖରେ ପ୍ରକଟିତ ହୋଇଛନ୍ତି।” ଅନ୍ୟମାନେ ମଧ୍ୟ କହୁଥିଲେ, “ଆଗ କାଳର କୌଣସି ଭବିଷ୍ୟ‌ଦ୍‌ବକ୍ତା ଜୀବନରେ ଉଠିଛନ୍ତି।” 9 କିନ୍ତୁ ହେରୋଦ କହିଲେ, “ମୁଁ ଯୋହନଙ୍କ ମୁଣ୍ଡକାଟ କରିଛି। ତେବେ ଏ କିଏ, ଯାହାଙ୍କ ବିଷୟରେ ମୁଁ ଏଭଳି କଥା ଶୁଣୁଛି?” ତେଣୁ ହେରୋଦ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ଦେଖିବା ପାଇଁ ଚେଷ୍ଟା କଲେ।

ଯୀଶୁ ପାଞ୍ଚ ହଜାର ଲୋକଙ୍କୁ ଖାଇବାକୁ ଦେଲ

(ମାଥିଉ 14:13-21; ମାର୍କ 6:30-44; ଯୋହନ 6:1-14)

10 ପ୍ରେରିତମାନେ ଫେରି ଆସି ସେମାନେ ଯାତ୍ରା କରିବା ସମୟରେ ଯାହାସବୁ କରିଥିଲେ, ସେ ବିଷୟରେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ଆଗରେ ବର୍ଣ୍ଣନା କଲେ। ତା'ପରେ ଯୀଶୁ ପ୍ରେରିତମାନଙ୍କୁ ସାଙ୍ଗରେ ନେଇ ସେଠାରୁ ବେ‌ଥ୍‌ସାଇଦା ନାମକ ନଗରକୁ ଅନ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କଠାରୁ ଅଲଗା ରହିବା ପାଇଁ ଗ୍ଭଲିଗଲେ। 11 କିନ୍ତୁ ଯୀଶୁ କେଉଁଠାକୁ ଗଲେ ଏହା ଲୋକମାନେ ଜାଣି ପାରିଲେ। ସେମାନେ ତାହାଙ୍କର ଅନୁସରଣ କଲେ। ଯୀଶୁ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ସ୍ୱାଗତ କଲେ ଏବଂ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ରାଜ୍ୟ ବିଷୟରେ ଶିକ୍ଷା ଦେଲେ। ସେ ରୋଗୀମାନଙ୍କୁ ସୁସ୍ଥ କଲେ।

12 ଅପରାହ୍ନର ବିଳମ୍ବିତ ପ୍ରହରରେ ବାରଜଣ ଯାକ ପ୍ରେରିତ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ପାଖକୁ ଆସି କହିଲେ, “ଏ ସ୍ଥାନଟି ନିର୍ଜନ ଅଟେ। ଆପଣ ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ ବିଦାୟ କରିଦିଅନ୍ତୁ। ସେମାନେ ଆଖପାଖ ଗାଁ ଓ କ୍ଷେତ୍ରକୁ ଯାଇ ବସା ଓ ଖାଦ୍ୟର ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥା କରନ୍ତୁ।”

13 କିନ୍ତୁ ଯୀଶୁ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ କହିଲେ, “ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ଏମାନଙ୍କୁ କିଛି ଖାଇବାକୁ ଦିଅ।”

ଶିଷ୍ୟମାନେ କହିଲେ, “ଆମ୍ଭ ପାଖରେ କେବଳ ପାଞ୍ଚୋଟି ରୋଟୀ ଓ ଦୁଇଟି ମାଛ ଛଡ଼ା ଆଉ କିଛି ହେଲେ ନାହିଁ। ଆମ୍ଭେ ଯାଇ ଏସବୁ ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ ଖାଦ୍ୟ କିଣି ଆଣିବୁ ବୋଲି ଆପଣ ଗ୍ଭହୁଁଛନ୍ତି କି?” 14 ସେଠାରେ କେବଳ ପ୍ରାୟ ପାଞ୍ଚ ହଜାର ପୁରୁଷ ଲୋକ ଥିଲେ।

ଯୀଶୁ ଶିଷ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କୁ କହିଲେ, “ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ ପଗ୍ଭଶ ପଗ୍ଭଶ ଜଣ ହିସାବରେ ଦଳ ଦଳ କରି ବସାଅ।”

15 ସେମାନେ ତାହା କଲେ ଓ ସବୁ ଲୋକଙ୍କୁ ବସାଇ ଦେଲେ। 16 ତା'ପରେ ଯୀଶୁ ପାଞ୍ଚୋଟି ରୋଟୀ ଓ ଦୁଇଟି ମାଛ ନେଲେ। ସେ ସ୍ୱର୍ଗ ଆଡ଼କୁ ଗ୍ଭହିଁ ଖାଦ୍ୟପାଇଁ ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କୁ ଧନ୍ୟବାଦ ଦେଲେ। ସେ ଖାଦ୍ୟତକ ଖଣ୍ଡ ଖଣ୍ଡ କରି ତାହାଙ୍କ ଶିଷ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କୁ ଲୋକଙ୍କ ଭିତରେ ପରଶି ଦେବାକୁ ଦେଲେ। 17 ସବୁ ଲୋକ ଖାଇଲେ ଓ ତୃପ୍ତ ହୋଇଗଲେ। ତଥାପି ବହୁତ ଖାଦ୍ୟ ବଳିଗଲା। ବଳକା ଖାଦ୍ୟ ଟୁକୁରାତକ ଶିଷ୍ୟମାନେ ବାରଟି ଟୋକେଇରେ ଭର୍ତ୍ତି କଲେ।

ପିତର ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟଙ୍କୁ ସ୍ୱୀକାର କଲେ

(ମାଥିଉ 16:13-19; ମାର୍କ 8:27-29)

18 ଥରେ ଯୀଶୁ ଏକୁଟିଆ ପ୍ରାର୍ଥନା କରୁଥିଲେ। ତାହାଙ୍କ ଶିଷ୍ୟମାନେ ଏକାଠି ମିଳି ସେହିସ୍ଥାନକୁ ଆସିଲେ। ଯୀଶୁ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ପଗ୍ଭରିଲେ, “ମୁଁ କିଏ ବୋଲି ଲୋକେ କ’ଣ ସବୁ କହୁଛନ୍ତି?”

19 ସେମାନେ ଉତ୍ତର ଦେଲେ, “କେତେକ କହୁଛନ୍ତି ଯେ ଆପଣ ବାପ୍ତିଜକ ଯୋହନ। କେତେକ କହୁଛନ୍ତି ଯେ ଆପଣ ଏଲିୟ। ଏବଂ ଅନ୍ୟ କେତେକ କହୁଛନ୍ତି ଯେ ଆପଣ କାଳ ପୂର୍ବେ ଥିବା ଭବିଷ୍ୟ‌ଦ୍‌ବକ୍ତାମାନଙ୍କ ମଧ୍ୟରୁ ପୁନର୍ବାର ବଞ୍ଚି ଉଠିଥିବା କୌଣସି ଏକ ଭବିଷ୍ୟ‌ଦ୍‌ବକ୍ତା।”

20 ଯୀଶୁ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ କହିଲେ, “ମୁଁ କିଏ ବୋଲି ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ କ’ଣ କହୁଛ?”

ପିତର ଉତ୍ତର ଦେଲେ, “ଆପଣ ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ପୁତ୍ର ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟ।”

21 କିନ୍ତୁ ଯୀଶୁ ଏ ବିଷୟରେ କାହାକୁ ନ କହିବା ପାଇଁ ଚେତାବନୀ ଦେଇ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ କହିଲେ,

ଯୀଶୁ କହିଲେ ଯେ, ସେ ନିଶ୍ଚୟ ମୃତ୍ୟୁବରଣ କରିବେ

(ମାଥିଉ 16:21-28; ମାର୍କ 8:31–9:1)

22 “ଏ କଥା ସତ୍ୟ ଯେ ମନୁଷ୍ୟପୁତ୍ର ଅନେକ ଯାତନା ନିଶ୍ଚୟ ଭୋଗ କରିବେ। ପ୍ରାଚୀନ ଯିହୂଦୀ ନେତା, ପ୍ରଧାନଯାଜକ ଓ ଶାସ୍ତ୍ରୀମାନେ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ଅସ୍ୱୀକାର କରିବେ। ମନୁଷ୍ୟପୁତ୍ରଙ୍କୁ ମାରିଦେବେ। କିନ୍ତୁ ତିନି ଦିନ ପରେ ସେ ପୁଣି ମୃତ୍ୟୁରୁ ପୁନରୁ‌ତ୍‌ଥିତ ହେବେ।”

23 ଯୀଶୁ ପୁଣି ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ କହିବାକୁ ଲାଗିଲେ, “ଯଦି କେହି ମୋର ଅନୁସରଣ କରିବାକୁ ଗ୍ଭହୁଁଥାଏ, ତେବେ ତାହାକୁ ନିଜର ସମସ୍ତ କାମନା ତ୍ୟାଗ କରିବାକୁ ପଡ଼ିବ। ପ୍ରତିଦିନ ତାହାକୁ ଦିଆଯାଇଥିବା କ୍ରୁଶକୁ ଗ୍ରହଣ କରିବାକୁ ହେବ, ଏବଂ ସେ ମୋର ଅନୁସରଣ କରିବ। 24 ଯେଉଁ ଲୋକ ନିଜ ଜୀବନ ରକ୍ଷା କରିବାକୁ ଗ୍ଭହିଁବ, ସେ ତାହା ହରାଇ ବସିବ। ଏବଂ ଯେଉଁ ଲୋକ ମୋ’ ପାଇଁ ତାହାର ଜୀବନ ଦେବ, ସେ ତାହାକୁ ରକ୍ଷା କରିବ। 25 ଯଦି ଜଣେ ସାରା ସଂସାର ପାଇ ଶେଷରେ ମରିଯାଏ ବା ହଜିଯାଏ, ତାହାହେଲେ ଲାଭ କ’ଣ? 26 ଯଦି କୌଣସି ଲୋକ ମୋ’ ପାଇଁ ବା ମୋ’ ଉପଦେଶ ପାଇଁ ଲଜ୍ଜିତ ହୋଇଥାଏ, ତେବେ ମୁଁ ମଧ୍ୟ ତା’ ପାଇଁ ଲଜ୍ଜିତ ହେବି। ଯେତେବେଳେ ମନୁଷ୍ୟପୁତ୍ର ନିଜ ମହିମା, ପରମପିତାଙ୍କ ମହିମା ଓ ପବିତ୍ର ସ୍ୱର୍ଗଦୂତଙ୍କ ମହିମା ସହିତ ଆଗମନ କରିବେ, ସେତେବେଳେ ସେ ତା’ ପାଇଁ ଲଜ୍ଜିତ ହେବେ। 27 ମୁଁ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କୁ ସତ୍ୟ କହୁଛି ଯେ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କ ଭିତରୁ ଏଠାରେ ଠିଆ ହୋଇଥିବା କେତେକ ଲୋକ ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ପୂର୍ବରୁ ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ରାଜ୍ୟ ଦେଖିବେ।”

ମୋଶା ଓ ଏଲିୟଙ୍କ ସହିତ ଯୀଶୁ

28 ଏ କଥା କହିବାର ପ୍ରାୟ ଆଠ ଦିନ ପରେ ସେ ପିତର, ଯୋହନ ଓ ଯାକୁବଙ୍କୁ ସାଙ୍ଗରେ ନେଇ ପ୍ରାର୍ଥନା କରିବାକୁ ଗୋଟିଏ ପର୍ବତ ଉପରକୁ ଗଲେ। 29 ଯୀଶୁ ପ୍ରାର୍ଥନା କରୁଥିବା ସମୟରେ ତାହାଙ୍କ ମୁହଁର ଚେହେରା ବଦଳିଗଲା। ତାହାଙ୍କ ପିନ୍ଧାଲୁଗା ଚ‌କ୍‌ଚକ୍ ଧଳା ହୋଇଗଲା। 30 ତା'ପରେ ସେଠାରେ ଦୁଇଜଣ ପୁରୁଷ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ସହିତ କଥାବାର୍ତ୍ତା କରୁଥିଲେ। ସେମାନେ ମୋଶା ଓ ଏଲିୟ ଥିଲେ। 31 ସେମାନଙ୍କ ଚେହେରା ମଧ୍ୟ ଝଲକୁ ଥିଲା। ସେମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ସହିତ ଯିରୁଶାଲମରେ ଘଟିବାକୁ ଥିବା ତାହାଙ୍କ ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ବିଷୟରେ କଥାବାର୍ତ୍ତା ହେଉଥିଲେ। 32 ସେତେବେଳେ ପିତର ଓ ଅନ୍ୟମାନେ ଶୋଇ ପଡ଼ିଥିଲେ। କିନ୍ତୁ ସେମାନେ ଉଠି ପଡ଼ିଲେ ଓ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ମହିମା ଦେଖିଲେ। ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ସହିତ ଠିଆ ହୋଇଥିବା ଅନ୍ୟ ଦୁଇଜଣଙ୍କୁ ମଧ୍ୟ ସେମାନେ ଦେଖିଲେ: 33 ମୋଶା ଓ ଏଲିୟ ଯିବାକୁ ବାହାରିବା ସମୟରେ ପିତର ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ କହିଲେ, “ଗୁରୁ, ଭଲ ହେଲା ଯେ ଆମ୍ଭେମାନେ ଏଠାରେ ଅଛୁ। ଆମ୍ଭେମାନେ ଏଠାରେ ତିନୋଟି ତମ୍ବୁ ଟାଣି ଦେବୁ। ଗୋଟିଏ ତୁମ୍ଭ ପାଇଁ ଆଉ ଗୋଟିଏ ମୋଶାଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ ଓ ଅନ୍ୟଟି ଏଲିୟଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ।” ପିତର ଜାଣି ପାରୁ ନ ଥିଲେ ଯେ, ସେ କ’ଣ କହୁଛନ୍ତି।

34 ପିତର ଏହିସବୁ କଥା କହିବା ସମୟରେ ଖଣ୍ଡେ ମେଘ ଉଠି ଆସିଲା ସମସ୍ତଙ୍କୁ ଘୋଡ଼ାଇ ପକେଇଲା। ମେଘ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ଘୋଡ଼ାଇ ପକାଇବାରୁ ପିତର, ଯାକୁବ ଓ ଯୋହନ ଡରିଗଲେ। 35 ସେତେବେଳେ ମେଘ ଭିତରୁ ଆକାଶବାଣୀ ହେଲା, “ଏ ମୋର ପୁତ୍ର। ଏହାଙ୍କୁ ମୁଁ ବାଛିଅଛି। ତାହାଙ୍କ କଥାର ବାଧ୍ୟ ହୁଅ।”

36 ଆକାଶବାଣୀ ହୋଇ ସାରିବା ପରେ ସେଠାରେ କେବଳ ଯୀଶୁ ଥିଲେ। ପିତର, ଯାକୁବ ଓ ଯୋହନ ଏ ବିଷୟରେ ନୀରବ ରହିଲେ। ସେମାନେ ଯାହାକିଛି ଦେଖିଥିଲେ, ସେ ବିଷୟରେ ସେ ସମୟରେ କାହାରିକୁ କିଛି କହିଲେ ନାହିଁ।

ଯୀଶୁ ଗୋଟିଏ ବାଳକକୁ ଭୂତ କବଳରୁ ମୁକ୍ତକଲେ

(ମାଥିଉ 17:14-18; ମାର୍କ 9:14-27)

37 ତା’ ପରଦିନ ଯୀଶୁ, ପିତର, ଯୋହନ ଓ ଯାକୁବ ପର୍ବତ ଉପରୁ ତଳକୁ ଓହ୍ଲାଇ ଆସିଲେ। ବହୁ ସଂଖ୍ୟାରେ ଲୋକେ ଆସି ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ଭେଟିଲେ। 38 ଭିଡ଼ ଭିତରୁ ଜଣେ ଲୋକ ପାଟି କରି ଉଠିଲା, “ଗୁରୁ, ଦୟାକରି ଆସି ମୋ’ ପୁଅକୁ ଦେଖନ୍ତୁ। 39 ସେ ମୋର ଏକମାତ୍ର ସନ୍ତାନ। ଶୟତାନଠାରୁ ଗୋଟିଏ ଭୂତ ଆସି ତାକୁ କବଳିତ କରି ନେଉଛି ଏବଂ ତା'ପରେ ପୁଅ ଚିତ୍କାର କରି ଉଠୁଛି। ସେ ତା’ ନିଜର ନିୟନ୍ତ୍ରଣ ହରେଇ ବସୁଛି। ତା ମୁହଁରୁ ଫେଣ ବାହାରି ପଡ଼ୁଛି। ସେ ଭୂତ ତାକୁ ବାରମ୍ବାର ଯନ୍ତ୍ରଣା ଦେଉଛି ଓ ପ୍ରାୟ ତାକୁ ଛାଡ଼ି ଯାଉ ନାହିଁ।” 40 ମୁଁ ଆପଣଙ୍କ ଶିଷ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କୁ ମୋ’ ପୁଅ ଦେହରୁ ଭୂତକୁ ଛଡ଼େଇ ଦେବାକୁ ଅନୁରୋଧ କଲି, କିନ୍ତୁ ସେମାନେ ପାରିଲେ ନାହିଁ।”

41 ତା'ପରେ ଯୀଶୁ କହିଲେ, “ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ବିଶ୍ୱାସ ବିହିନ ଜୀବନଯାପନ କରୁଛ ଓ କୁପଥଗାମୀ ହେଉଛ। ଆଉ କେତେ ଦିନ ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ମୁଁ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କ ସହିତ ରହିଥିବି?” ତା'ପରେ ଯୀଶୁ ଲୋକଟିକୁ କହିଲେ, “ତୁମ୍ଭ ପୁଅକୁ ଏଠାକୁ ଆଣ।”

42 ପିଲାଟି ଆସୁଥିବା ବେଳେ ଭୂତ ତାକୁ ଭୂମି ଉପରକୁ କଗ୍ଭଡ଼ି ଦେଲା। ପିଲାଟି ନିୟନ୍ତ୍ରଣ ହରାଇ ବସିଲା। କିନ୍ତୁ ଯୀଶୁ ଭୂତକୁ ଗୋଟିଏ କଠୋର ଧମକ ଦେଲେ। ଏହା ପରେ ପିଲାଟି ସୁସ୍ଥ ହୋଇଗଲା। ଯୀଶୁ ତାହାକୁ ତା’ ବାପା ପାଖରେ ସମର୍ପି ଦେଲେ। 43 ସମସ୍ତ ଲୋକ ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ମହାନ୍ ଶକ୍ତି ଦେଖି ଆଶ୍ଚର୍ଯ୍ୟ ହୋଇଗଲେ।

ଯୀଶୁ ତାହାଙ୍କ ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ବିଷୟରେ କହିଲେ

(ମାଥିଉ 17:22-23; ମାର୍କ 9:30-32)

ଯୀଶୁ ଯାହାସବୁ କରୁଥିଲେ ତାହା ଦେଖି ଲୋକେ ଆଶ୍ଚର୍ଯ୍ୟ ହୋଇ ଯାଉଥିଲେ। 44 ଯୀଶୁ ତାହାଙ୍କ ଶିଷ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କୁ କହିଲେ, “ବର୍ତ୍ତମାନ ମୁଁ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କୁ ଯାହା କହିବି, ତାହା ଭୁଲିବ ନାହିଁ। ମନୁଷ୍ୟପୁତ୍ରଙ୍କୁ କେତେଜଣ ମନୁଷ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କ ହାତରେ ଧରେଇ ଦେବେ।” 45 କିନ୍ତୁ ଶିଷ୍ୟମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ଏ କଥାର କିଛି ଅର୍ଥ ବୁଝି ପାରିଲେ ନାହିଁ। ଏହାର ଅର୍ଥ ସେମାନଙ୍କ ପ୍ରତି ଲୁକାୟିତ ଥିଲା। ତେଣୁ ସେମାନେ କିଛି ଏହାକୁ ବୁଝି ପାରିଲେ ନାହିଁ କିନ୍ତୁ ସେମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ଏ ବିଷୟରେ ପଗ୍ଭରିବାକୁ ସାହସ କଲେ ନାହିଁ।

ସବୁଠାରୁ ମହତ୍ତ୍ୱପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ବ୍ୟକ୍ତି

(ମାଥିଉ 18:1-5; ମାର୍କ 9:33-37)

46 ଥରେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ଶିଷ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ଯୁକ୍ତିତର୍କ ହେଲା ଯେ, ସେମାନଙ୍କ ଭିତରେ ସବୁଠାରୁ ଶ୍ରେଷ୍ଠ କିଏ? 47 ଯୀଶୁ ସେମାନଙ୍କର ମନଭାବ ଜାଣିଗଲେ। ତେଣୁ ସେ ଗୋଟିଏ ଛୋଟ ପିଲାକୁ ନିଜ ପାଖରେ ଠିଆ କରାଇଲେ। 48 ସେ ଶିଷ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କୁ କହିଲେ, “ଯଦି କୌଣସି ଲୋକ ଏହିଭଳି ଛୋଟ ପିଲାକୁ ମୋ’ ନାମରେ ଗ୍ରହଣ କରେ, ତାହାହେଲେ ସେ ମୋତେ ଗ୍ରହଣ କରେ। ଆଉ ଯେଉଁ ଲୋକ ମୋତେ ଗ୍ରହଣ କରେ, ସେ ମୋତେ ପଠାଇଥିବା ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କୁ ଗ୍ରହଣ କରେ। ଏଣୁ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ଯେଉଁ ଲୋକ ସବୁଠାରୁ ନମ୍ର, ସେ ହେଉଛି ସବୁଠାରୁ ଶ୍ରେଷ୍ଠ।”

ଯେଉଁ ଲୋକ ତୁମ୍ଭର ବିପକ୍ଷ ନୁହେଁ ସେ ତୁମ୍ଭର ସପକ୍ଷ

(ମାର୍କ 9:38-40)

49 ଯୋହନ କହିଲେ, “ଗୁରୁ, ଆମ୍ଭେମାନେ ଜଣେ ଲୋକକୁ ଆପଣଙ୍କ ନାମ ନେଇ ଭୂତମାନଙ୍କୁ ଲୋକଙ୍କ ଦେହରୁ ତଡ଼ି ଦେଉଥିବାର ଦେଖିଲୁ। ଆମ୍ଭେମାନେ ତାହାକୁ ଏସବୁ ବନ୍ଦ କରିବାକୁ କହିଲୁ। କାରଣ ସେ ଆମ୍ଭ ଶିଷ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କ ଗୋଷ୍ଠୀର ଲୋକ ନୁହେଁ।”

50 ଯୀଶୁ ଯୋହନଙ୍କୁ ଉତ୍ତର ଦେଲେ, “ତାକୁ ମନା କର ନାହିଁ। କାରଣ ଯେଉଁ ଲୋକ ତୁମ୍ଭ ବିପକ୍ଷରେ ନାହାନ୍ତି, ସେହିଁ ତୁମ୍ଭ ସପକ୍ଷର ଲୋକ।”

ଗୋଟିଏ ଶମିରୋଣୀୟ ନଗର

51 ଯୀଶୁ ଜଗତ ଛାଡ଼ି ସ୍ୱର୍ଗକୁ ଫେରିଯିବାର ସମୟ ପାଖେଇ ଆସୁଥିଲା। ଯୀଶୁ ଯିରୁଶାଲମ ଯିବାକୁ ସ୍ଥିର କଲେ। 52 ସେ ତାହାଙ୍କ ଆଗରୁ କେତେକ ଲୋକଙ୍କୁ ପଠାଇଲେ। ସେମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ ସବୁକିଛି ପ୍ରସ୍ତୁତ କରିବା ପାଇଁ ଶମିରୋଣର ଏକ ନଗରରେ ପହଞ୍ଚିଲେ। 53 କିନ୍ତୁ ଯୀଶୁ ଯିରୁଶାଲମକୁ ଯାଉଥିବାର ଦେଖି ସେଠାକାର ଲୋକ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ସ୍ୱାଗତ କଲେ ନାହିଁ। 54 ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ଶିଷ୍ୟ ଯାକୁବ ଓ ଯୋହନ ଏହା ଦେଖିଲେ। ସେମାନେ କହିଲେ, “ପ୍ରଭୁ ସ୍ୱର୍ଗରୁ ଅଗ୍ନି ବର୍ଷା କରି ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ଧ୍ୱଂସ କରିଦେବା ପାଇଁ ଆମ୍ଭେ ଆଦେଶ ଦେବୁ ବୋଲି କ’ଣ ଆପଣ ଗ୍ଭହୁଁଛନ୍ତି?”[a]

55 କିନ୍ତୁ ଯୀଶୁ ସେମାନଙ୍କ ଆଡ଼କୁ ବୁଲି ପଡ଼ି ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ଭର୍ତ୍ସନା କଲେ।[b] 56 ତା'ପରେ ଯୀଶୁ ଓ ତାହାଙ୍କ ଶିଷ୍ୟମାନେ ଅନ୍ୟ ଗାଁକୁ ଗ୍ଭଲିଗଲେ।

ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ଅନୁସରଣ

(ମାଥିଉ 8:19-22)

57 ସେମାନେ ରାସ୍ତାରେ ଆଗେଇ ଯାଉଥିଲେ। ଜଣେ ଲୋକ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ କହିଲା, “ଆପଣ ଯେଉଁଆଡ଼େ ଯିବେ, ମୁଁ ଆପଣଙ୍କ ପଛେ ପଛେ ଯିବି।”

58 ଯୀଶୁ ତାହାକୁ କହିଲେ, “କୋକିଶିଆଳିର ରହିବା ପାଇଁ ଗାତ ଅଛି। ଆକାଶର ପକ୍ଷୀମାନଙ୍କର ବସା ଅଛି, କିନ୍ତୁ ମନୁଷ୍ୟପୁତ୍ରଙ୍କର ମୁଣ୍ଡ ଗୁଞ୍ଜିବାକୁ ଟିକିଏ ହେଲେ ସ୍ଥାନ ନାହିଁ।”

59 ତା'ପରେ ଯୀଶୁ ଆଉ ଜଣକୁ କହିଲେ, “ମୋର ଅନୁସରଣ କର।”

କିନ୍ତୁ ସେହି ଲୋକଟି କହିଲା, “ପ୍ରଭୁ, ମୋତେ ପ୍ରଥମେ ଯାଇ ମୋ’ ବାପାଙ୍କୁ କବର ଦେବାକୁ ଅନୁମତି ଦିଅନ୍ତୁ।”

60 କିନ୍ତୁ ଯୀଶୁ ତାହାକୁ କହିଲେ, “ମୃତ ଲୋକଙ୍କୁ ମୃତ ଲୋକମାନେ କବର ଦେବେ। କିନ୍ତୁ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଯାଇ ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ରାଜ୍ୟ ବିଷୟରେ ପ୍ରଗ୍ଭର କର।”

61 ଆଉ ଜଣେ ଲୋକ କହିଲା, “ପ୍ରଭୁ ମୁଁ ଆପଣଙ୍କ ଅନୁସରଣ କରିବି। କିନ୍ତୁ ପ୍ରଥମେ ମୋତେ ମୋ’ ପରିବାର ଲୋକଙ୍କଠାରୁ ବିଦାୟ ନେବାକୁ ଅନୁମତି ଦିଅନ୍ତୁ।”

62 କିନ୍ତୁ ଯୀଶୁ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ କହିଲେ, “ଯେଉଁ ଲୋକ ଲଙ୍ଗଳ ଉପରେ ହାତ ଦେଇ ପଛକୁ ଗ୍ଭହେଁ, ସେ ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ରାଜ୍ୟ ପାଇଁ ଯୋଗ୍ୟ ନୁହେଁ।”

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(A)(B)

9 When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons(C) and to cure diseases,(D) 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God(E) and to heal the sick. 3 He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.(F) 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5 If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”(G) 6 So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.

7 Now Herod(H) the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John(I) had been raised from the dead,(J) 8 others that Elijah had appeared,(K) and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life.(L) 9 But Herod said, “I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?” And he tried to see him.(M)

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(N)(O)

10 When the apostles(P) returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida,(Q) 11 but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God,(R) and healed those who needed healing.

12 Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.”

13 He replied, “You give them something to eat.”

They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.” 14 (About five thousand men were there.)

But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. 16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them.(S) Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. 17 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(T)(U)

18 Once when Jesus was praying(V) in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?”

19 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(W) others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”(X)

20 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”(Y)

Jesus Predicts His Death

21 Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.(Z) 22 And he said, “The Son of Man(AA) must suffer many things(AB) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(AC) and he must be killed(AD) and on the third day(AE) be raised to life.”(AF)

23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.(AG) 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.(AH) 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them(AI) when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.(AJ)

27 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration(AK)

28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James(AL) with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.(AM) 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure,[a](AN) which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy,(AO) but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master,(AP) it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)

34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen;(AQ) listen to him.”(AR) 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.(AS)

Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy(AT)

37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.”

41 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,”(AU) Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”

42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time

While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.”(AV) 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it,(AW) and they were afraid to ask him about it.

46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.(AX) 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts,(AY) took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(AZ) For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”(BA)

49 “Master,”(BB) said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”

50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”(BC)

Samaritan Opposition

51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven,(BD) Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.(BE) 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan(BF) village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John(BG) saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[b]?”(BH) 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.

The Cost of Following Jesus(BI)

57 As they were walking along the road,(BJ) a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(BK) has no place to lay his head.”

59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”(BL)

But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”(BM)

61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”(BN)

62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

The Twelve Disciples Sent Out

9 (A)And calling the twelve together, He gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases. 2 And He sent them out to (B)preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3 And He said to them, “(C)Take nothing for your journey, (D)neither a staff, nor a [a]bag, nor bread, nor money; nor have two [b]tunics apiece. 4 And whatever house you enter, stay there [c]until you leave that city. 5 And as for those who do not receive you, as you go out from that city, (E)shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 And departing, they were going [d]throughout the villages, (F)proclaiming the gospel and healing everywhere.

7 (G)Now (H)Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was happening, and he was greatly perplexed, because it was said by some that (I)John had risen from the dead, 8 and by some that (J)Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen again. 9 And Herod said, “I myself had John beheaded, but who is this man about whom I hear such things?” And (K)he kept trying to see Him.

10 (L)And when the apostles returned, they recounted to Him all that they had done. (M)Taking them with Him, He slipped away by Himself to a city called (N)Bethsaida. 11 But when the crowds became aware of this, they followed Him; and welcoming them, He began speaking to them about the kingdom of God and curing those who had need of healing.

Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

12 Now the day [e]was ending, and the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the crowd away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside and obtain lodging and find provisions, for here we are in a desolate place.” 13 But He said to them, “You give them something to eat!” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people.” 14 (For there were about five thousand men.) And He said to His disciples, “Have them [f]sit down (O)in groups of about fifty each.” 15 And they did so, and had them all [g]sit down. 16 Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them. And He broke them and kept giving them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 And they all ate and were satisfied; and [h]the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve (P)baskets full.

Peter Confesses Jesus Is the Christ

18 (Q)And it happened that while He was (R)praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” 19 And they answered and said, “John the Baptist, and others say Elijah, but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen again.” 20 And He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered and said, “(S)The [i]Christ of God.” 21 But He [j](T)warned them and directed them not to tell this to anyone, 22 (U)saying, “(V)The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.”

Take Up Your Cross

23 And He was saying to them all, “(W)If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. 24 For (X)whoever wishes to save his [k]life will lose it, but whoever loses his [l]life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. 25 For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and (Y)loses or forfeits himself? 26 (Z)For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 But I say to you truthfully, (AA)there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration

28 (AB)Now it happened some eight days after these words, that taking along (AC)Peter and John and James, He (AD)went up on the mountain (AE)to pray. 29 And it happened that while He was (AF)praying, the appearance of His face (AG)became different, and His clothing became white and [m]gleaming. 30 And behold, two men were talking with Him, and they were Moses and Elijah, 31 who, appearing in [n]glory, were speaking of His [o](AH)departure which He was about to fulfill at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and his companions (AI)had been overcome with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him. 33 And it happened that as they were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “(AJ)Master, it is good for us to be here; (AK)let us make three [p]booths: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—(AL)not realizing what he was saying. 34 While he was saying this, a cloud [q]formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 Then (AM)a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “(AN)This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!” 36 And when the voice [r]had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And (AO)they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.

Jesus Casts Out a Demon

37 (AP)Now it happened on the next day, that when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him. 38 And behold, a man from the crowd shouted, saying, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my [s]only one, 39 and behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming at the mouth, and only with difficulty does it leave him, mauling him as it leaves. 40 And I begged Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not.” 41 And Jesus answered and said, “You unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” 42 Now while he was still approaching, the demon [t]slammed him to the ground and threw him into a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all astonished at the (AQ)majesty of God.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

(AR)But while everyone was marveling at all that He was doing, He said to His disciples, 44 “Put these words into your ears; (AS)for the Son of Man is going to be [u]delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But (AT)they [v]did not understand this statement, and it was concealed from them so that they would not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask Him about this statement.

Who Is the Greatest?

46 (AU)Now an argument [w]started among them as to which of them might be the greatest. 47 But Jesus, (AV)knowing [x]what they were thinking in their heart, took a child and stood him by His side, 48 and said to them, “(AW)Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; (AX)for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great.”

49 (AY)And John answered and said, “(AZ)Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to hinder him because he does not follow along with us.” 50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not hinder him, (BA)for he who is not against you is [y]for you.”

51 Now it happened that when the days for (BB)Him to be taken up were soon to be fulfilled, He set His face (BC)to go to Jerusalem; 52 and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the (BD)Samaritans to [z]make arrangements for Him. 53 But they did not receive Him, (BE)because [aa]He was journeying with His face toward Jerusalem. 54 And when His disciples (BF)James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to (BG)command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55 But He turned and rebuked them, [ab][and said, “You do not know what kind of spirit you are of, 56 for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.”] And they went on to another village.

The Cost of Following Jesus

57 (BH)And as they were going along the road, (BI)someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the [ac]air have [ad]nests, but (BJ)the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 59 And He said to another, “(BK)Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” 60 But He said to him, “Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and (BL)proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God.” 61 Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord, but (BM)first permit me to say farewell to those at home.” 62 But Jesus said to him, “(BN)No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
