Psalm 80

Psalm 80[a]

For the music director, according to the shushan-eduth style;[b] a psalm of Asaph.

80 O Shepherd of Israel, pay attention,
you who lead Joseph like a flock of sheep.
You who sit enthroned above the cherubim,[c] reveal your splendor.[d]
In the sight of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh reveal[e] your power.
Come and deliver us.[f]
O God, restore us.
Smile on us.[g] Then we will be delivered.[h]
O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies,[i]
how long will you remain angry at your people while they pray to you?[j]
You have given them tears as food;[k]
you have made them drink tears by the measure.[l]
You have made our neighbors dislike us,[m]
and our enemies insult us.
O God of Heaven’s Armies,[n] restore us.
Smile on us.[o] Then we will be delivered.[p]
You uprooted a vine[q] from Egypt;
you drove out nations and transplanted it.
You cleared the ground for it;[r]
it took root,[s]
and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered by its shadow,
the highest cedars[t] by its branches.
11 Its branches reached the Mediterranean Sea,[u]
and its shoots the Euphrates River.[v]
12 Why did you break down its walls,[w]
so that all who pass by pluck its fruit?[x]
13 The wild boars of the forest ruin it;[y]
the insects[z] of the field feed on it.
14 O God of Heaven’s Armies,[aa] come back.
Look down from heaven and take notice.
Take care of this vine,
15 the root[ab] your right hand planted,
the shoot you made to grow.[ac]
16 It is burned[ad] and cut down.
May those who did this die because you are displeased with them.[ae]
17 May you give support to the one you have chosen,[af]
to the one whom you raised up for yourself.[ag]
18 Then we will not turn away from you.
Revive us and we will pray to you.[ah]
19 O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies,[ai] restore us.
Smile on us.[aj] Then we will be delivered.[ak]

Isaiah 65:17-25

17 For look, I am ready to create
new heavens and a new earth![a]
The former ones[b] will not be remembered;
no one will think about them anymore.[c]
18 But be happy and rejoice forevermore
over what I am about to create!
For look, I am ready to create Jerusalem to be a source of joy,[d]
and her people to be a source of happiness.[e]
19 Jerusalem will bring me joy,
and my people will bring me happiness.[f]
The sound of weeping or cries of sorrow
will never be heard in her again.
20 Never again will one of her infants live just a few days[g]
or an old man die before his time.[h]
Indeed, no one will die before the age of one hundred;[i]
anyone who fails to reach[j] the age of one hundred will be considered cursed.
21 They will build houses and live in them;
they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
22 No longer will they build a house only to have another live in it,[k]
or plant a vineyard only to have another eat its fruit,[l]
for my people will live as long as trees,[m]
and my chosen ones will enjoy to the fullest what they have produced.[n]
23 They will not work in vain,
or give birth to children that will experience disaster.[o]
For the Lord will bless their children
and their descendants.[p]
24 Before they even call out,[q] I will respond;
while they are still speaking, I will hear.
25 A wolf and a lamb will graze together;[r]
a lion, like an ox, will eat straw,[s]
and a snake’s food will be dirt.[t]
They will no longer injure or destroy
on my entire royal mountain,”[u] says the Lord.

John 14:18-31

18 “I will not abandon[a] you as orphans,[b] I will come to you.[c] 19 In a little while[d] the world will not see me any longer, but you will see me; because I live, you will live too. 20 You will know at that time[e] that I am in my Father and you are in me and I am in you. 21 The person who has my commandments and obeys[f] them is the one who loves me.[g] The one[h] who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and will reveal[i] myself to him.”

22 “Lord,” Judas (not Judas Iscariot)[j] said,[k] “what has happened that you are going to reveal[l] yourself to us and not to the world?” 23 Jesus replied,[m] “If anyone loves me, he will obey[n] my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and take up residence with him.[o] 24 The person who does not love me does not obey[p] my words. And the word[q] you hear is not mine, but the Father’s who sent me.

25 “I have spoken these things while staying[r] with you. 26 But the Advocate,[s] the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you[t] everything,[u] and will cause you to remember everything[v] I said to you.

27 “Peace I leave with you;[w] my peace I give to you; I do not give it[x] to you as the world does.[y] Do not let your hearts be distressed or lacking in courage.[z] 28 You heard me say to you,[aa] ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad[ab] that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am.[ac] 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe.[ad] 30 I will not speak with you much longer,[ae] for the ruler of this world is coming.[af] He has no power over me,[ag] 31 but I am doing just what the Father commanded me, so that the world may know[ah] that I love the Father.[ai] Get up, let us go from here.[aj]
