Psalm 139:1-6

Psalm 139[a]

For the music director, a psalm of David.

139 O Lord, you examine me[b] and know me.
You know when I sit down and when I get up;
even from far away you understand my motives.
You carefully observe me when I travel or when I lie down to rest;[c]
you are aware of everything I do.[d]
Certainly[e] my tongue does not frame a word
without you, O Lord, being thoroughly aware of it.[f]
You squeeze me in from behind and in front;
you place your hand on me.
Your knowledge is beyond my comprehension;
it is so far beyond me, I am unable to fathom it.[g]

Psalm 139:13-18

13 Certainly[a] you made my mind and heart;[b]
you wove me together[c] in my mother’s womb.
14 I will give you thanks because your deeds are awesome and amazing.[d]
You knew me thoroughly;[e]
15 my bones were not hidden from you,
when[f] I was made in secret
and sewed together in the depths of the earth.[g]
16 Your eyes saw me when I was inside the womb.[h]
All the days ordained for me
were recorded in your scroll
before one of them came into existence.[i]
17 How difficult it is for me to fathom your thoughts about me, O God![j]
How vast is their sum total.[k]
18 If I tried to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand.
Even if I finished counting them,
I would still have to contend with you.[l]

1 Samuel 2:1-10

Hannah Exalts the Lord in Prayer

Hannah prayed,[a]

“My heart has rejoiced[b] in the Lord;
my horn[c] has been raised high because of the Lord.
I have loudly denounced[d] my enemies.
Indeed I rejoice in your deliverance.
No one is holy[e] like the Lord!
There is no one other than you!
There is no rock[f] like our God!
Don’t keep speaking[g] so arrogantly.[h]
Proud talk should not[i] come out of your mouth,
for the Lord is a God who knows;
he[j] evaluates what people do.
The bows of warriors are shattered,
but those who stumbled have taken on strength.[k]
The well fed hire themselves out to earn food,
but the hungry no longer lack.[l]
Even[m] the barren woman has given birth to seven,[n]
but the one with many children has declined.[o]
The Lord both kills and gives life;
he brings down to the grave[p] and raises up.[q]
The Lord impoverishes and makes wealthy;
he humbles and he exalts.
He lifts the weak[r] from the dust;
he raises[s] the poor from the ash heap
to seat them with princes—
he bestows on them an honored position.[t]
The foundations of the earth belong to the Lord
he placed the world on them.
He watches over[u] his holy ones,[v]
but the wicked are made speechless in the darkness,[w]
for it is not by one’s own[x] strength that one prevails.
10 The Lord shatters[y] his adversaries;[z]
he thunders against them from[aa] the heavens.
The Lord executes judgment to the ends of the earth.
He will strengthen[ab] his king
and exalt the power[ac] of his anointed one.”[ad]

John 7:19-24

19 Hasn’t Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps[a] the law! Why do you want[b] to kill me?”

20 The crowd[c] answered, “You’re possessed by a demon![d] Who is trying to kill you?”[e] 21 Jesus replied,[f] “I performed one miracle[g] and you are all amazed.[h] 22 However, because Moses gave you the practice of circumcision[i] (not that it came from Moses, but from the forefathers), you circumcise a male child[j] on the Sabbath. 23 But if a male child[k] is circumcised[l] on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses is not broken,[m] why are you angry with me because I made a man completely well[n] on the Sabbath? 24 Do not judge according to external appearance,[o] but judge with proper[p] judgment.”
