12 How blessed[a] is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people whom he has chosen to be his special possession.[b]
13 The Lord watches[c] from heaven;
he sees all people.[d]
14 From the place where he lives he looks carefully
at all the earth’s inhabitants.
15 He is the one who forms every human heart,[e]
and takes note of all their actions.
16 No king is delivered by his vast army;
a warrior is not saved by his great might.
17 A horse disappoints those who trust in it for victory;[f]
despite its great strength, it cannot deliver.
18 Look, the Lord takes notice of his loyal followers,[g]
those who wait for him to demonstrate his faithfulness[h]
19 by saving their lives from death[i]
and sustaining them during times of famine.[j]
20 We[k] wait for the Lord;
he is our deliverer[l] and shield.[m]
21 For our hearts rejoice in him,
for we trust in his holy name.
22 May we experience your faithfulness, O Lord,[n]
for[o] we wait for you.
37 At this also my heart pounds
and leaps from its place.
2 Listen carefully[a] to the thunder of his voice,
to the rumbling[b] that proceeds from his mouth.
3 Under the whole heaven he lets it go,
even his lightning to the far corners[c] of the earth.
4 After that a voice roars;
he thunders with an exalted voice,
and he does not hold back his lightning bolts[d]
when his voice is heard.
5 God thunders with his voice in marvelous ways;[e]
he does great things beyond our understanding.[f]
6 For to the snow he says, ‘Fall[g] to earth,’
and to the torrential rains,[h] ‘Pour down.’[i]
7 He causes everyone to stop working,[j]
so that all people[k] may know[l] his work.
8 The wild animals go to their lairs,
and in their dens they remain.
9 A tempest blows out from its chamber,
icy cold from the driving winds.[m]
10 The breath of God produces ice,
and the breadth of the waters freeze solid.
11 He loads the clouds with moisture;[n]
he scatters his lightning through the clouds.
12 The clouds[o] go round in circles,
wheeling about according to his plans,
to carry out[p] all that he commands them
over the face of the whole inhabited world.
13 Whether it is for punishment,[q]
or for his land,
or for mercy,
he causes it to find its mark.[r]
50 Now this is what I am saying, brothers and sisters:[a] Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Listen,[b] I will tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep,[c] but we will all be changed— 52 in a moment, in the blinking[d] of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 Now when this perishable puts on the imperishable, and this mortal puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will happen,
“Death has been swallowed up in victory.”[e]
55 “Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”[f]
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!
