Zechariah 1-4

Return to Me, Declares Yahweh

In the eighth month of the second year of (A)Darius, the word of [a]Yahweh came to (B)Zechariah the prophet, the son of Berechiah, the son of (C)Iddo, saying, “Yahweh was very (D)wrathful against your fathers. Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts, “(E)Return to Me,” declares Yahweh of hosts, “that I may return to you,” says Yahweh of hosts. “Do not be (F)like your fathers, to whom the (G)former prophets called out, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts, “(H)Return now from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.”’ But they did (I)not listen or give heed to Me,” declares Yahweh. “Your (J)fathers, where are they? And the (K)prophets, do they live forever? But did not My words and My statutes, which I commanded My slaves the prophets, (L)overtake your fathers? Then they [b]returned and said, ‘(M)As Yahweh of hosts purposed to do to us in accordance with our ways and our deeds, so He has done with us.’”’”

A Man on a Red Horse

On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of Yahweh came to Zechariah the prophet, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo, saying, I saw at night, and behold, a man was riding on a (N)red horse, and he was standing among the (O)myrtle trees which were in the ravine, with red, sorrel, and (P)white horses behind him. Then I said, “My (Q)lord, what are these?” And the (R)angel who was speaking with me said to me, “I will show you what these are.” 10 And the man who was standing among the myrtle trees answered and said, “These are those whom Yahweh has sent to [c](S)patrol the earth.” 11 So they answered the angel of Yahweh who was (T)standing among the myrtle trees and said, “We have [d]patrolled the earth, and behold, (U)all the earth is sitting still and quiet.”

12 Then the angel of Yahweh answered and said, “O Yahweh of hosts, (V)how long will You (W)have no compassion for Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which You have been (X)indignant these (Y)seventy years?” 13 Yahweh answered the (Z)angel who was speaking with me with good words, (AA)comforting words. 14 So the angel who was speaking with me said to me, “(AB)Call out, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts, “I am (AC)exceedingly jealous for Jerusalem and Zion. 15 But I am very (AD)wrathful with the nations who are (AE)at ease; for I was only a little wrathful, but they (AF)helped increase the calamity.” 16 Therefore thus says Yahweh, “I will (AG)return to Jerusalem with compassion; My (AH)house will be built in it,” declares Yahweh of hosts, “and a measuring (AI)line will be stretched over Jerusalem.”’ 17 Again, call out, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts, “My (AJ)cities will again overflow with good, and Yahweh will again (AK)comfort Zion and again (AL)choose Jerusalem.”’”

Four Horns and Craftsmen

18 [e]Then I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, there were four horns. 19 So I said to the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these?” And he said to me, “These are the (AM)horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.” 20 Then Yahweh showed me four (AN)craftsmen. 21 And I said, “What are these coming to do?” And he said, “These are the (AO)horns which have scattered Judah so that no man lifts up his head; but these craftsmen have come to cause them to tremble, to (AP)throw down the horns of the nations who have lifted up their horns against the land of Judah in order to scatter it.”

A Man with a Measuring Cord

[f]Then I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, there was a man with a (AQ)measuring cord in his hand. So I said, “Where are you going?” And he said to me, “To (AR)measure Jerusalem, to see how wide it is and how long it is.” And behold, the (AS)angel who was speaking with me was going out, and another angel was coming out to meet him and said to him, “Run, speak to that (AT)young man, saying, ‘(AU)Jerusalem will be inhabited [g](AV)without walls because of the (AW)multitude of men and cattle within it. Indeed I,’ declares Yahweh, ‘will be a (AX)wall of fire [h]around her, and I will be the (AY)glory in her midst.’”

[i]Ho there! (AZ)Flee from the land of the north,” declares Yahweh, “for I have (BA)dispersed you as the four winds of the heavens,” declares Yahweh. “Woe, Zion! (BB)Escape, you who are living with the daughter of Babylon.” For thus says Yahweh of hosts, “After [j](BC)glory He has sent Me against the nations which have taken you as spoil, for he who touches you, touches the [k](BD)apple of His eye. For behold, I will (BE)wave My hand over them so that they will be (BF)spoil for their slaves. Then you will know that Yahweh of hosts has sent Me. 10 (BG)Sing for joy and be glad, O daughter of Zion; for behold, I am coming and I will (BH)dwell in your midst,” declares Yahweh. 11 (BI)And many nations will join themselves to Yahweh in that day and will become My people. Then I will (BJ)dwell in your midst, and you will (BK)know that Yahweh of hosts has sent Me to you. 12 Then Yahweh will (BL)inherit Judah as His portion in the holy land and will again (BM)choose Jerusalem.

13 [l](BN)Be silent, all flesh, before Yahweh; for He is (BO)aroused from His holy habitation.”

The High Priest and a Branch

Then he showed me (BP)Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of Yahweh, and [m](BQ)Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. And Yahweh said to Satan, “(BR)Yahweh rebuke you, Satan! Indeed, Yahweh who has (BS)chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a (BT)brand delivered from the fire?” Now Joshua was clothed with (BU)filthy garments and standing before the angel. And he answered and spoke to those who were standing before him, saying, “(BV)Remove the filthy garments from him.” Again he said to him, “See, I have (BW)made your iniquity pass away from you and [n]will (BX)clothe you with festal robes.” Then I said, “Let them put a clean (BY)turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments, while the angel of Yahweh was standing by.

And the angel of Yahweh testified to Joshua, saying, “Thus says Yahweh of hosts, ‘If you will (BZ)walk in My ways and if you will keep the responsibility given by Me, then you will also (CA)render justice in My house and also keep My (CB)courts, and I will grant you [o]access to walk among these who are standing here. Now listen, Joshua the high priest, you and your friends who are sitting in front of you—indeed they are men who are a (CC)wondrous sign, for behold, I am going to bring in My servant the [p](CD)Branch. For behold, the stone that I have put before Joshua; on one stone are (CE)seven eyes. Behold, I will engrave an inscription on it,’ declares Yahweh of hosts, ‘and I will (CF)remove the iniquity of that land in one day. 10 In that day,’ declares Yahweh of hosts, ‘every one of you will call for his neighbor to sit under his (CG)vine and under his fig tree.’”

The Golden Lampstand

Then (CH)the angel who was speaking with me returned and (CI)roused me, as a man who is roused from his sleep. And he said to me, “(CJ)What do you see?” And I said, “I see, and behold, a (CK)lampstand all of gold with its bowl on the top of it, and its (CL)seven lamps on it with seven spouts belonging to each of the lamps which are on the top of it, also (CM)two olive trees by it, one on the right side of the bowl and the other on its left side.” Then I answered and said to the angel who was speaking with me saying, “What are these, (CN)my lord?” So (CO)the angel who was speaking with me answered and said to me, “(CP)Do you not know what these are?” And I said, “No, my lord.” Then he answered and spoke to me, saying, “This is the word of Yahweh to (CQ)Zerubbabel, saying, ‘(CR)Not by [q]might nor by power, but by My (CS)Spirit,’ says Yahweh of hosts. ‘What are you, O great (CT)mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become a plain; and he will bring forth the top stone with (CU)shouts of “Grace, grace to it!”’”

Also the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, “The hands of Zerubbabel have (CV)laid the foundation of this house, and his hands will (CW)finish it. Then you will know that Yahweh of hosts has sent me to [r]you. 10 For who has despised the day of (CX)small things? [s]But these (CY)seven will be glad when they see the [t](CZ)plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel—these are the (DA)eyes of Yahweh which (DB)roam to and fro throughout the earth.”

11 Then I answered and said to him, “What are these (DC)two olive trees on the right of the lampstand and on its left?” 12 And I answered the second time and said to him, “What are the two olive [u]branches which are beside the two golden pipes, which empty the golden oil from themselves?” 13 So he spoke to me, saying, “(DD)Do you not know what these are?” And I said, “No, (DE)my lord.” 14 Then he said, “These are the two [v](DF)anointed ones who are (DG)standing by the (DH)Lord of all the earth.”

Revelation 18

Fallen Is Babylon

18 After these things I saw another (A)angel (B)coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was (C)illumined with his glory. And he cried out with a mighty voice, saying, “[a](D)Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! And she (E)has become a dwelling place of demons and a [b]prison of every (F)unclean spirit, and a [c]prison of every unclean bird [d]and a [e]prison of every unclean and hateful beast. For all the nations [f]have drunk of the (G)wine of the wrath of her sexual immorality, and (H)the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality with her, and the (I)merchants of the earth have become rich by the power of her [g](J)sensuality.”

And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, “(K)Come out of her, my people, so that you will not participate in her sins and receive of her plagues; for her sins have [h](L)piled up as high as heaven, and God has (M)remembered her iniquities. (N)Pay her back even as she paid, and [i]give her back double according to her deeds; in the (O)cup which she has mixed, mix double for her. (P)To the degree that she glorified herself and (Q)lived [j]sensuously, to the same degree give her torment and mourning, for she says in her heart, ‘(R)I sit as a queen and I am not a widow, and will never see mourning.’ For this reason (S)in one day her plagues will come, [k]pestilence and mourning and famine, and she will be (T)burned up with fire; for the Lord God who judges her (U)is strong.

“And (V)the kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and (W)lived [l]sensuously with her, will (X)cry and lament over her when they (Y)see the smoke of her burning, 10 (Z)standing at a distance because of the fear of her torment, saying, ‘(AA)Woe, woe, (AB)the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For in (AC)one hour your judgment has come.’

11 “And the (AD)merchants of the earth (AE)cry and mourn over her, because no one buys their cargo anymore— 12 cargo of (AF)gold and silver and precious [m]stones and pearls and fine linen and purple and silk and scarlet, and every kind of citron wood and every article of ivory and every article made from precious wood and [n]bronze and iron and marble, 13 and cinnamon and amomum and incense and perfume and frankincense and wine and olive oil and fine flour and wheat and cattle and sheep, and cargo of horses and carriages and [o]human beings and [p](AG)human lives. 14 And the fruit [q]you long for has gone from you, and all things that were splendid and shining have passed away from you and men will no longer find them. 15 The (AH)merchants of (AI)these things, who became rich from her, will (AJ)stand at a distance because of the fear of her torment, crying and mourning, 16 saying, ‘(AK)Woe, woe, (AL)the great city, she who (AM)was clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and [r]adorned with gold and precious [s]stones and pearls; 17 for in (AN)one hour such great wealth has been laid (AO)waste!’ And (AP)every shipmaster and every [t]passenger and sailor, and as many as make their living by the sea, (AQ)stood at a distance, 18 and were (AR)crying out as they (AS)saw the smoke of her burning, saying, ‘(AT)What is like (AU)the great city?’ 19 And they threw (AV)dust on their heads and were crying out, crying and mourning, saying, ‘(AW)Woe, woe, the great city, in which all who have ships at sea (AX)became rich by her [u]wealth, for in (AY)one hour she has been laid (AZ)waste!’ 20 (BA)Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you saints and (BB)apostles and prophets, because (BC)God has [v]pronounced judgment for you against her.”

21 Then [w]a (BD)strong angel (BE)picked up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “So will Babylon, (BF)the great city, be thrown down with violence, and (BG)will not be found any longer. 22 And (BH)the sound of harpists and musicians and flute-players and trumpeters will not be heard in you any longer; and no craftsman of any craft will be found in you any longer; and the (BI)sound of a mill will not be heard in you any longer; 23 and the light of a lamp will not shine in you any longer; and the (BJ)voice of the bridegroom and bride will not be heard in you any longer; for your (BK)merchants were the great men of the earth, because all the nations were deceived (BL)by your sorcery. 24 And in her was found the (BM)blood of prophets and of saints and of (BN)all who have been slain on the earth.”
