Judges 7

Then Jerubbaal (who is Gideon) rose up early, and all the people who were with him, and camped beside the well of Harod, so that the army of the Midianites was on the northern side of them, in the valley, by the hill of Moreh.

And the LORD said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too numerous for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel glorifies himself against Me, and says, ‘My hand has saved me!’

“Now, therefore, proclaim in the audience of the people, and say, ‘Whoever is afraid or fearful, let him return and depart early from Mount Gilead.’” And twenty-two thousand of the people who were at Mount Gilead returned. So, ten thousand remained.

And the LORD said to Gideon, “There are still too many people. Bring them down to the water and I will test them for you there. And of whomever I say to you, ‘This man shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you. And of whomever I say to you, ‘This man shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.”

So, he brought the people down to the water. And the LORD said to Gideon, “As many as lap the water with their tongues, as a dog laps, separate, likewise everyone who bows down on his knees to drink.”

And the number of those who lapped, putting their hands to their mouths, was three hundred men. But all the remaining people kneeled down upon their knees to drink water.

Then the LORD said to Gideon, “With these three hundred men who lapped I will save you and deliver the Midianites into your hand. And let all the other men go, each to his home.”

So, the people took provisions with them, and their trumpets. And he sent all the rest of Israel, every man to his tent, and retained the three hundred men. And the army of Midian was beneath him in a valley.

And the same night, the LORD said to him, “Arise. Go down against the army. For I have delivered it into your hand.

10 “But if you fear to go down, you and Purah, your servant, go down to the army.

11 “And you shall hear what they say, and so shall your hands be strong to go down against the army.” Then he and Purah, his servant, went down to an outpost of the soldiers who were in the camp.

12 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all those of the East lay in the valley, like grasshoppers in multitude. And their camels were without number, as the sand which is by the seaside in multitude.

13 And when Gideon had come, behold, a man told a dream to his neighbor, and said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream. And lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled from above, into the camp of Midian, and came into a tent, and struck it so that it fell. And it overturned it, so that the tent fell down.”

14 And his friend answered, and said, “This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon, the son of Joash, a man of Israel. Into his hand has God delivered Midian and all the army.”

15 When Gideon heard the dream told, and the interpretation of the same, he worshipped and returned to the camp of Israel, and said, “Up! For the LORD has delivered the army of Midian into your hand!”

16 And he divided the three hundred men into three bands, and gave every man a trumpet in his hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps inside the pitchers.

17 And he said to them, “Look at me and do likewise when I come to the edge of the camp. Just as I do, so do you.

18 “When I blow with a trumpet, all who are with me also blow with trumpets, on every side of the camp, and say, ‘For the LORD and for Gideon!’”

19 So, Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outer edge of the camp, in the beginning of the middle watch, and they raised up the watchmen. And they blew with their trumpets and broke the pitchers that were in their hands.

20 And the three companies blew with trumpets and broke the pitchers. And they held the lamps in their left hand and the trumpets in their right hands, to blow them. And they cried, “The sword of the LORD and of Gideon!”

21 And they stood, every man in his place, all around the camp. And the whole army ran and cried and fled.

22 And the three hundred blew with trumpets. And the LORD set every man’s sword upon his neighbor, and upon all the camp. So the army fled to Beth Hashittah in Zererah, to the border of Abel Meholah, to Tabbath.

23 Then the men of Israel being gathered together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, pursued after the Midianites.

24 And Gideon sent messengers to all Mount Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites, and take from them the waters up to Beth Barah and Jordan!” Then all the men of Ephraim gathered together and took the waters up to Beth Barah and Jordan.

25 And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb, and killed Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and killed Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued the Midianites, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, beyond Jordan.

Acts 11

11 Now the Apostles and the brothers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the Word of God.

And when Peter had come up to Jerusalem, those of the circumcision examined him,

saying, “You went to uncircumcised men and have eaten with them.”

Then Peter began expounding it in order to them, saying,

“I was in the city of Joppa, praying. And while in a trance, I saw this vision: a certain vessel, coming down as a great sheet, let down from Heaven by the four corners. And it came to me.

“When I had fastened my eyes on it, I considered, and saw four-footed beasts of the Earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and birds of the heaven.

“Also I heard a voice, saying to me, ‘Arise, Peter. Kill and eat.’

“And I said, ‘Absolutely not, Lord! For nothing common or unclean has ever entered into my mouth.’

“But the voice answered me a second time from the sky, ‘The things that God has purified, do not make common.’

10 “And this was done three times, and all were taken up again into the sky.

11 “Then behold, immediately there were three men who had already come to the house where I was, sent to me from Caesarea.

12 “And the Spirit said to me that I should go with them, without doubting. Moreover, these six brothers came with me. And we entered into the man’s house.

13 “And he showed us how he had seen an angel in his house, who stood and said to him, ‘Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter.

14 ‘He shall speak words to you, whereby both you and all your house shall be saved.’

15 “And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, just as upon us at the beginning.

16 “Then I remembered the Word of the Lord. How He said, ‘John baptized with water. But you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.’

17 “If, then, God gave them a similar gift to the one He gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God?”

18 When they heard these things, they kept silent, and glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted repentance unto life to the Gentiles.”

19 And those who were scattered because of the affliction which arose about Stephen, passed through until they came to Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, preaching the Word to no one except the Jews.

20 Now some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come into Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists, and preached the Lord Jesus.

21 And the hand of the Lord was with them, so that a great number believed and turned to the Lord.

22 Then, word of those things came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem. And they sent forth Barnabas, to go as far as Antioch;

23 who, when he had come and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and encouraged all to continue in the Lord with purpose of heart.

24 For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost, and faith. And many people joined themselves to the Lord.

25 Then Barnabas left for Tarsus to seek Paul.

26 And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. And it so happened that they met with the church a whole year and taught many people. And the disciples were first called “Christians” in Antioch.

27 In those days, Prophets also came from Jerusalem to Antioch.

28 And one named Agabus stood up and signified by the Spirit that there would be great famine throughout all the world (which also happened under Claudius Caesar).

29 Then the disciples, everyone according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brothers who dwelt in Judea;

30 which they also did, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.

Jeremiah 20

20 When Pashhur, the son of Immer the Priest, who was appointed Governor in the House of the LORD, heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things,

then Pashhur struck Jeremiah the Prophet and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the House of the LORD.

And in the morning, Pashhur brought Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, “The LORD has not called your name Pashhur, but Magor-Missabib.

For thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, I will make you to be a terror to yourself, and to all your friends. And they shall fall by the sword of their enemies. And your eyes shall behold it. And I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babel. And he shall carry them captive into Babel and shall kill them with the sword.

‘Moreover, I will deliver all the substance of this city, and all its labors, and all its precious things. And I will give all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies, who shall plunder them and take them away and carry them to Babel.

‘And you, Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house, shall go into captivity. And you shall come to Babel. And there you shall die and shall be buried there, you and all your friends to whom you have prophesied lies.’”

O LORD, You have persuaded me, and I am laid open. You are stronger than me and have prevailed. I am in derision daily. Everyone mocks me.

For when I speak, I cry out of wrong. And I proclaim desolation. Therefore, the Word of the LORD has become a reproach to me and a daily derision.

Then I said, “I will not make mention of Him or speak in His Name anymore.” But His Word was in my heart as a burning fire, shut up in my bones. And I was weary with restraining it. And I could not.

10 For I had heard the whispering of many, fear on every side, saying, “Declare! And we will declare it!” All my friends watched for my halting, saying, “It may be that he is deceived. So, we shall prevail against him. And we shall execute our vengeance upon him.”

11 But the LORD is with me like a mighty giant. Therefore, my persecutors shall be overthrown, and shall not prevail, and shall be greatly confounded. For they have done unwisely, and their everlasting shame shall never be forgotten.

12 But, O, LORD of Hosts! Who tries the righteous and sees the inner core and the heart! Let me see Your vengeance on them! For to You have I opened my cause.

13 Sing to the LORD! Praise the LORD! For He has delivered the soul of the poor from the hand of the wicked.

14 Curse the day on which I was born and do not let the day on which my mother bore me be blessed!

15 Curse the man who showed my father, saying, “A male child is born to you,” and comforted him.

16 And let that man be as the cities which the LORD has overturned without relent. And let him hear the cry in the morning and the shouting at noon,

17 because he did not kill me in the womb, so that my mother might have been my grave, or her womb a perpetual conception.

18 How is it that I came forth from the womb to see labor and sorrow, so that my days should be consumed with shame?

Mark 6

And He departed from there and came into His own country. And His disciples followed Him.

And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many who heard Him were astonished, and said, “From where has this Man received these things? And what wisdom is this that is given to Him, that even such great works are done by His hands?

“Is not this that carpenter, Mary’s son, the brother of James and Joses, and of Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they were offended by Him.

And Jesus said to them, “A Prophet is not without honor, except in his own country and among his own kindred and in his own house.”

And He could do no great works there, except to lay His hands upon a few sick folk and heal them.

And He marveled at their unbelief, and went around the towns on every side, teaching.

And He called to Him the twelve and began to send them forth two by two and gave them power over unclean spirits.

And He commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey except a staff only, neither bag nor bread nor money in their belts.

But that they should wear sandals and that they should not put on two coats.

10 And He said to them, “Wherever you shall enter into a house, stay there till you depart that place.

11 “And whoever shall neither receive you nor hear you, shake off the dust that is under your feet when you depart from there, for a witness to them. Truly I say to you, it shall be easier for Sodom or Gomorrah at the Day of Judgment than for that city.”

12 And they went out and preached repentance.

13 And they cast out many demons. And they anointed many who were sick with oil, and healed them.

14 Then King Herod heard of Him (for His Name was now well-known) and said, “John Baptist has risen again from the dead, and therefore great works are done by him.”

15 Others said, “It is Elijah,” and some said, “It is a Prophet like one of those Prophets.”

16 So when Herod heard it, he said, “It is John, whom I beheaded. He is risen from the dead.”

17 For Herod himself had taken John and bound him in prison for Herodias’ sake, who was his brother Philip’s wife. Because he had married her.

18 For John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”

19 Therefore Herodias conspired against him and would have killed him, but she could not.

20 For Herod feared John (knowing that he was a just and holy man) and respected him. And when he heard him, he did so gladly.

21 But the opportunity came when Herod, on his birthday, made a banquet to his princes and captains and chief leaders of Galilee.

22 And the daughter of that same Herodias came in and danced, and pleased Herod, and those who sat at table together. And the King said to the maid, “Ask of me what you will and I will give it you.”

23 And he swore to her, “Whatever you shall ask of me I will give it to you, even up to the half of my kingdom.”

24 So she went forth and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” And she said, “John Baptist’s head.”

25 Then she quickly returned to the King and asked, saying, “I would that you should give me, even now, on a platter, the head of John Baptist.”

26 Then the King was very sorry. Yet for his oath’s sake and for their sakes of those who sat at table with him, he would not refuse her.

27 And immediately the king sent the hangman and gave charge that John Baptist’s head should be brought in. So, he went and beheaded him in the prison,

28 And brought his head on a platter and gave it to the maid. And the maid gave it to her mother.

29 And when his disciples heard it, they came and took up his body and put it in a tomb.

30 And the Apostles gathered themselves together to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught.

31 And He said to them, “Come away into the wilderness, and rest a while.” For there were many comers and goers, that they had not had a chance to eat.

32 So they went by ship out of the way into a desert place.

33 But the people saw them when they departed and many knew Him and ran after them, out of all cities, and got to the desert place before them.

34 Then Jesus went out and saw a great multitude and had compassion on them, because they were like sheep which had no shepherd. And He began to teach them many things.

35 And when the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him, saying, “This is a desert place and now the day is old.

36 “Let them depart, so that they may go into the country and towns nearby and buy bread. For they have nothing to eat.”

37 But He answered, and said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to Him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred pennies worth of bread and give them that to eat?”

38 Then He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and look.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fishes.”

39 So He commanded them to make them all sit down by groups upon the green grass.

40 Then they sat down by rows, by hundreds and by fifties.

41 And He took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looked up to Heaven and gave thanks and broke the loaves and gave them to His disciples to set before them. And He divided the two fishes among them all.

42 So they all ate and were satisfied.

43 And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments and of the fishes.

44 And those who had eaten were about five thousand men.

45 And immediately He had His disciples get into the ship and go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida. While He sent away the people.

46 Then as soon as He had sent them away, He departed into a mountain to pray.

47 And when evening came, the ship was in the midst of the sea and He was alone on the land.

48 And He saw them troubled in rowing (for the wind was against them). And about the fourth watch of the night, He came to them, walking upon the sea; and would have passed by them.

49 And when they saw Him walking upon the sea, they thought it was a spirit and cried out.

50 For they all saw Him and were very afraid. But He talked with them and said to them, “Be of good comfort! It is I! Do not be afraid!”

51 Then He went up to them into the ship. And the wind ceased. And they were much more amazed and marveled.

52 For they had not understood the matter of the loaves, because their hearts were hardened.

53 And they came over and went into the land of Gennesaret, and arrived.

54 So when they had come out of the ship, immediately everyone knew it,

55 and ran around throughout all that region, carrying all who were sick to Him in couches, wherever they heard that He was.

56 And wherever He entered into towns or cities or villages, they laid their sick in the streets and asked Him if they might at least touch the edge of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made whole.
