Joshua 5:1-6:5

Now when all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the children of Israel until they had gone over, their hearts fainted. And there was no courage in them anymore, because of the children of Israel.

At the same time, the LORD said to Joshua, “Make yourself sharp knives, return, and circumcise the sons of Israel a second time.”

Then Joshua made himself sharp knives and circumcised the sons of Israel on the Hill of the Foreskins.

And this is why Joshua circumcised all the people (the males) who came out of Egypt: because all the men of war were dead in the wilderness along the way, after they came out of Egypt.

For all the people who came out were circumcised. But all the people who were born in the wilderness along the way, after they came out of Egypt, were not circumcised.

For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the people of the men of war who came out of Egypt were consumed, because they did not obey the voice of the LORD (and to whom the LORD swore that He would not show the land which the LORD had sworn to their fathers, that He would give us, a land that flows with milk and honey).

So their sons, whom He raised up in their stead, Joshua circumcised. For they were uncircumcised because they did not circumcise them along the way.

And when they had ended circumcising all the people, they stayed in the places in the camp until they were whole.

Afterward, the LORD said to Joshua, “This day I have taken away the shame of Egypt from you.” Therefore, He called the name of that place, Gilgal, to this day.

10 So the children of Israel stayed in Gilgal and kept the Feast of the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month, at evening, on the plain of Jericho.

11 And on the day after the Passover — on the same day — they ate from the old grain of the land, unleavened bread and parched corn.

12 And the manna ceased on the day after they had eaten from the old grain of the land. Nor did the children of Israel have manna anymore, but ate from the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

13 And when Joshua was near Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked. And behold, there stood a man opposite him, having a sword drawn in his hand. And Joshua went to him, and said to him, “Are you on our side, or on our adversaries’?”

14 And he said, “No, but as a captain of the army of the LORD I have now come.” Then Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and worshipped, and said to him, “What does the LORD say to his servant?”

15 And the captain of the LORD’s army said to Joshua, “Loosen your shoe from your foot. For the place upon which you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so.

Now Jericho was shut up and closed because of the children of Israel. No one could go out or come in.

And the LORD said to Joshua, “Behold, I have given Jericho and its king, the strong men of war, into your hand.

“Therefore, all of your men of war shall march around the city, encircling it once. You shall do this for six days.

“And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the Ark. And the seventh day, you shall circle the city seven times. And the priests shall blow with the trumpets.

“And when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout. Then the wall of the city shall fall down flat. And the people shall ascend, every man straight ahead.”

Psalm 132-134

132 LORD, remember David with all his affliction.

Who swore to the LORD, vowed to the Mighty of Jacob,

“I will not enter into the tabernacle of my house, nor come upon my pallet (my bed),

“nor allow my eyes to sleep, nor my eyelids to slumber,

“until I find a place for the LORD, a habitation for the Mighty of Jacob.”

Lo, we heard of it in Ephrathah and found it in the fields of the forest.

We will enter into His Tabernacles and worship before His footstool.

Arise, O LORD, into Your rest, You and the Ark of Your strength.

Let Your priests be clothed with righteousness; and let Your saints rejoice.

10 For Your servant David’s sake, do not refuse the face of Your Anointed.

11 The LORD has sworn to David in truth; and He will not shrink from it, saying, “From the fruit of your body will I set upon your throne.

12 “If your sons keep My Covenant, and My testimonies, so that I shall teach them, their sons also shall sit upon your throne forever.”

13 For the LORD has chosen Zion and loved to dwell in it, saying,

14 “This is My rest, forever. Here will I dwell; for I have desired it.

15 “I will surely bless her provisions and will satisfy her poor with bread

16 “and will clothe her priests with salvation; and her saints shall shout for joy.

17 “There I will make the horn of David bud. I have ordained a Light for My Anointed.

18 “I will clothe His enemies with shame; but on Him His crown shall flourish.” A song of degrees, or Psalm, of Solomon

133 Behold, how good and how pleasant a thing it is for brothers to dwell together.

It is like the precious ointment upon the head, which runs down upon the beard (even to Aaron’s beard, which went down on the border of his garments)

as the dew of Hermon which falls upon the mountains of Zion; for there the LORD appointed the blessing and life forever. A song of degrees

134 Behold! Praise the LORD all you servants of the LORD, who stand in the House of the LORD by night!

Lift up your hands to the Sanctuary and praise the LORD!

The LORD, Who has made Heaven and Earth, bless you out of Zion. Praise the LORD

Isaiah 65

65 “I have been sought by those who did not ask. I was found by those who did not seek Me. I said, ‘Behold Me! Behold Me!’ to a nation that did not call upon My Name.

“I have spread out My Hands all day to a rebellious people, who walked in a way that was not good, after their own imaginations,

“a people that always provoked Me to My Face, who sacrifices in gardens and burns incense upon bricks,

“who remain among the graves and lodge in the deserts, who eat swine’s flesh with the broth of things polluted in their vessels,

“who say, ‘Stay away. Do not come near to me. For I am holier than you.’ These are a smoke in My wrath, a fire that burns all the day.

“Behold, it is written before Me. I will not keep silence, but will render it and repay it into their bosom.

“Your iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers, shall be together,” says the LORD, “who have burnt incense upon the mountains and blasphemed Me upon the hills. Therefore, I will measure their old work into their bosom.”

Thus says the LORD: “As the wine is found in the cluster, and one says, ‘Do not destroy it, for a blessing is in it,’ so will I do for My servants’ sakes, so that I might not destroy them altogether.

“But I will bring a seed out of Jacob, and out of Judah, that shall inherit My mountain. And My Elect shall inherit it. And My servants shall dwell there.

10 “And Sharon shall be a sheepfold. And the valley of Achor shall be a resting place for the cattle of My people who have sought Me.

11 “But you are those who have forsaken the LORD, and forgotten My holy Mountain, and have prepared a table for the multitude, and furnish the drink offerings to the number.

12 “Therefore, I will number you for the sword. And all you shall bow down to the slaughter, because I called and you did not answer. I spoke and you did not hear, but did evil in My sight, and chose that thing which I did not desire.”

13 Therefore, thus says the LORD God: “Behold, My servants shall eat, and you shall be hungry. Behold, My servants shall drink, and you shall be thirsty. Behold, My servants shall rejoice, and you shall be ashamed.

14 “Behold, My servants shall sing for joy of heart, and you shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for crushing of spirit.

15 “And you shall leave your name as a curse to My Chosen. For the LORD God shall slay you and call His servants by another name.

16 “He who shall bless on the Earth, shall bless himself in the true God. And he who swears on the Earth, shall swear by the true God. For the former troubles are forgotten, and shall surely hide themselves from My Eyes.

17 “For lo, I will create new heavens and a new Earth. And the former shall neither be remembered nor come to mind.

18 “But be glad and rejoice forever in the things that I shall create. For behold, I will create Jerusalem as a rejoicing, and her people as a joy.

19 “And I will rejoice in Jerusalem and joy in My people. And the voice of weeping shall be heard no more in her, nor the voice of crying.

20 “No more shall there be there a child of no years, or an old man who has not filled his days. For he who shall be a hundred years old shall die a young man. But the sinner being a hundred years old shall be accursed.

21 “And they shall build houses and inhabit them. And they shall plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them.

22 “They shall not build, and another inhabit. They shall not plant, and another eat. For as the days of the tree are the days of My people. And My Elect shall enjoy the work of their hands in old age.

23 “They shall neither labor in vain nor bring forth in fear. For they are the seed of the Blessed of the LORD, and their buds with them.

24 “Yea, before they call, I will answer. And while they speak, I will hear.

25 “The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And dust shall be food to the serpent. They shall neither hurt nor destroy anymore, in all My holy mountain,” says the LORD.

Matthew 13

13 The same day, Jesus went out of the house, and sat by the seaside.

And great multitudes gathered to Him, so that He went into a ship and sat down. And the whole multitude stood on the shore.

Then He spoke many things to them in parables, saying, “Behold, a sower went out to sow.

“And as he sowed, some fell by the wayside. And the birds came and devoured them.

“And some fell upon stony ground, where they did not have much earth. And soon they sprang up, because they had no depth of earth.

“But when the Sun came up, they were burnt up; and for lack of rooting, withered away.

“And some fell among thorns. And the thorns sprang up and choked them.

But some fell in good ground, and brought forth fruit; one corn a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, and another thirtyfold.

“The one who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

10 Then the disciples came, and said to Him, “Why did You speak to them in parables?”

11 And He answered and said to them, “Because it has been given to you to know the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven. But to them it is not given.

12 “For whoever has, to him shall be given. And he shall have abundance. But whoever does not have, even that which he has shall be taken away from him.

13 “Therefore, I speak to them in parables. Because they, seeing, do not see. And hearing, they do not hear, nor understand.

14 “So in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled which says, ‘By hearing you shall hear and shall not understand; and seeing, you shall see and shall not perceive.

15 “‘For this people’s heart has grown fat and their ears barely hear and they have closed their eyes, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and should understand with their hearts and should return, that I might heal them.’

16 “But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear.

17 “For truly I say to you that many Prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which you see and have not seen them; and to hear those things which you hear and have not heard them.

18 “Therefore, hear the parable of the Sower.

19 “Whenever anyone hears the Word of the Kingdom, and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away that which was sown in his heart. And this is the one who has received the seed by the wayside.

20 “And the one who received seed in the stony ground, is he who hears the Word, and immediately, with joy, receives it,

21 “but he has no root in himself and endures but a season. For as soon as trouble or persecution comes because of the Word, he quickly stumbles.

22 “And the one who receives the seed among thorns, is he who hears the Word, but the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the Word. And it is made unfruitful.

23 “But the one who receives the seed in the good ground, is he who hears the Word and understands it, who also bears fruit and brings forth; some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, and some thirtyfold.”

24 He put forth another parable to them, saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.

25 “But while the man slept, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went his way.

26 “And when the blade had sprung up and brought forth fruit, the weeds also appeared.

27 “Then the servants of the landowner came, and said to him, ‘Master, did not you sow good seed in your field? From where have these weeds come?’

28 “And he said to them, ‘Some envious man has done this.’ Then the servants said to him, ‘Do you wish us to go and gather them up?’

29 “But he said, ‘No, lest while you are gathering the weeds you also pluck up the wheat with them.

30 “‘Let both grow together until the harvest. And at harvest time I will say to the reapers, “First, gather the weeds, and bind them in sheaves to burn them. But gather the wheat into my barn.”’”

31 He put forth another parable to them, saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man takes and sows in his field,

32 “which indeed is the least of all seeds. But when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs. And it becomes a tree, so that the birds of heaven come and build in its branches.”

33 He spoke another parable to them, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till all was leavened.”

34 Jesus spoke all these things to the multitude in parables. And He did not speak to them without parables.

35 So that which was spoken by the Prophet might be fulfilled, which says, “I will open my mouth in parables, and will utter the things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.”

36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away and went into the house. And His disciples came to Him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds of that field.”

37 Then He answered, and said to them, “He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man.

38 “And the field is the world. And the good seed are the children of the Kingdom. And the weeds are the children of the evil one.

39 “And the enemy who sows them is the devil. And the harvest is the end of the world. And the reapers are the angels.

40 “Just as the weeds are gathered and burned in the fire, so shall it be at the end of this world.

41 “The Son of Man shall send forth His angels. And they shall gather all stumbling blocks out of His Kingdom, and those who do iniquity,

42 “and shall cast them into a furnace of fire. There shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

43 “Then shall the just shine as the Sun in the Kingdom of their Father. The one who has ears to hear, let him hear.

44 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure, hidden in the field. Which, when a man has found, he hides it. And for joy thereof, departs and sells all that he has, and buys that field.

45 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant man who seeks good pearls,

46 “Who, having found a pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

47 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a draw net, cast into the sea, which gathers of all kinds of things;

48 “which, when it is full, they draw to land, and sit and gather the good into vessels, and cast away the bad.

49 “So shall it be at the end of the world. The angels shall go forth, and separate the bad from among the just;

50 “and shall cast them into a furnace of fire. There shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.”

51 Jesus said to them, “Do you understand all these things?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.”

52 Then He said to them, “Therefore, every scribe who is taught about the Kingdom of Heaven is like a landowner who brings forth, out of his treasure, things both new and old.”

53 And it happened that when Jesus had ended these parables, He departed from there,

54 and came into His own country, and taught them in their synagogue (so that they were astonished, and said, “From where does this wisdom and these great works come to this man?”

55 “Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brothers, James and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?

56 “And are not his sisters all with us? From where, then, did he get all these things?”).

57 And they were offended by Him. Then Jesus said to them, “A Prophet is not without honor, except in His own country and in His own house.”

58 And He did not do many great works there, because of their unbelief.
