Joshua 7

But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took from the accursed thing. Therefore, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.

And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai (which is beside Beth Aven), on the East side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, “Go up and view the country.” And the men went up and viewed Ai,

and returned to Joshua, and said to him, “Do not let all the people go up. Let about two or three thousand men go up and strike Ai; and do not make all the people labor there, for they are few.”

So, about three thousand men of the people went up there. And they fled before the men of Ai.

And the men of Ai struck thirty six of their men; for they chased them from before the gate to Shebarim and struck them as they went down. Therefore the hearts of the people melted away like water.

Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth upon his face before the Ark of the LORD until sunset—he and the elders of Israel—and put dust upon their heads.

And Joshua said, “Alas, O LORD God, why have you brought this people over the Jordan? To deliver us into the hand of the Amorites and to destroy us? If only we had been content to dwell on the other side of the Jordan!

“Oh LORD, what shall I say when Israel turns their backs before their enemies?

“For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it and shall surround us and destroy our name out of the Earth. And what will You do for Your mighty Name?”

10 And the LORD said to Joshua, “Get up. Why do you lie upon your face like that?”

11 “Israel has sinned. For they have transgressed My Covenant which I Commanded them. And they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen and deceived and have even put it with their own stuff.

12 “Therefore, the children of Israel cannot stand before their enemies—have turned their backs before their enemies—because they are doomed. Nor will I be with you anymore unless you destroy the accursed from among you.

13 “Up! Sanctify the people, and say, ‘Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow. For thus says the LORD God of Israel: “There is an accursed thing among you, O Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you have destroyed the accursed thing from among you.

14 “In the morning, therefore, you shall come, according to your tribes. And the tribe which the LORD takes shall come, according to the families. And the family which the LORD shall take, shall come by the households. And the household which the LORD shall take, shall come man by man.

15 “And he who is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the Covenant of the LORD; and because he has wrought folly in Israel.”’”

16 So Joshua rose up early in the morning and brought Israel by their tribes. And the tribe of Judah was taken.

17 And he brought the families of Judah, and took the family of the Zarhites. And he brought the family of the Zarhites, man by man. And Zabdi was taken.

18 And he brought his household, man by man. And Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

19 Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I beg you, give glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession to Him, and show me now what you have done. Do not hide it from me.”

20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, “Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel. And thus and so have I done.

21 “I saw, among the plunder, a beautiful Babylonian garment and two hundred shekels of silver and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels in weight. And I covered them, and took them. And behold, they lie hidden in the earth, in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.”

22 Then Joshua sent messengers, who ran to the tent. And behold, it was hidden in his tent, and the silver under it.

23 Therefore, they took them out of the tent and brought them to Joshua, and to all the children of Israel, and laid them before the LORD.

24 Then Joshua took Achan, the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his donkeys, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had. And he and all Israel with him brought them to the valley of Achor.

25 And Joshua said, “Why have you troubled us? The LORD shall trouble you this day.” And all Israel threw stones at him, and burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones.

26 And they erected a great heap of stones upon him, which stands to this day. And the LORD turned from His fierce wrath. Therefore, He called the name of that place, The Valley of Achor, which stands to this day.

Psalm 137-138

137 We sat by the rivers of Babel; and there we wept when we remembered Zion.

We hung our harps upon the willows, in the midst thereof.

Those who led us into captivity required songs and glee from us when we had hung up our harps, saying, “Sing us the songs of Zion!”

How shall we sing a song of the LORD in a strange land?

If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget,

if I do not remember you. Let my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not prefer Jerusalem to my chief joy.

Remember the children of Edom, O LORD, on the day of Jerusalem, who said, “Raze it! Raze it to the foundation thereof!”

O Daughter of Babel, worthy to be destroyed. Blessed is he who rewards you as you have served us.

Blessed is he who takes and dashes your children against the stones. A Psalm of David

138 I will praise You with my whole heart; before the gods I will praise You.

I will worship toward Your Holy Temple, and praise Your Name, because of Your lovingkindness and for Your Truth; for You have magnified Your Name by Your Word above all things.

When I called, then You heard me and increased strength in my soul.

All the kings of the Earth shall praise You, O LORD; for they have heard the words of Your mouth.

And they shall sing of the ways of the LORD, because the Glory of the LORD is great.

For the LORD is high, yet He beholds the lowly; but He knows the proud afar off.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me. You will stretch forth Your hand upon the wrath of my enemies; and Your right hand shall save me.

The LORD will perform toward me. O LORD, Your mercy endures forever! Do not forsake the works of Your hands. To him who excels: A Psalm of David

Jeremiah 1

The words of Jeremiah, the son of Hilkiah, one of the Priests who were at Anathoth, in the land of Benjamin,

to whom the Word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah, the son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign,

and also in the days of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, to the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.

Then the Word of the LORD came to me, saying,

“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. And before you came out of the womb, I sanctified you and ordained you to be a Prophet to the nations.”

Then I said, “Oh, LORD God. Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a child.”

But the LORD said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am a child’. For you shall go to all that I shall send you. And whatever I Command you, you shall speak.

“Do not be afraid of their faces. For I am with you, to deliver you,” said the LORD.

Then the LORD stretched out His Hand and touched my mouth. And the LORD said to me, “Behold, I have put My Words in your mouth.

10 “Behold, this day I have set you over the nations, and over the kingdoms, to pluck up, and to root out, and to destroy, and throw down, to build, and to plant.”

11 After this, the Word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” And I said, “I see a rod of almond tree.”

12 Then the LORD said to me, “You have seen correctly. For I will hasten My Word, to perform it.”

13 Again the Word of the LORD came to me the second time, saying, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a seething pot, looking out of the North.”

14 Then the LORD said to me, “A plague shall spread out of the North, upon all the inhabitants of the land.

15 “For lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the North,” says the LORD, “and they shall come. And everyone shall set his throne in the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and on all its walls, all around, and in all the cities of Judah.

16 “And I will declare to them My Judgments touching all the wickedness of those who have forsaken Me, and have burnt incense to other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.

17 “You, therefore, truss up your loins and arise and speak to them, all that I Command you. Do not be afraid of their faces, lest I destroy you before them.

18 “For I, behold, I, this day, have made you a defensed city, and an iron pillar, and walls of brass, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against its princes, against its priests, and against the people of the land.

19 “For they shall fight against you. But they shall not prevail against you. For I am with you, to deliver you,” says the LORD.

Matthew 15

15 Then the scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,

“Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”

But He answered and said to them, “And why do you transgress the Commandment of God by your tradition?

“For God has commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and mother. And the one who curses father or mother, let him die the death.’

“But you say, ‘Whoever shall say to father or mother, “By the gift that is offered by me,” you may have profit;

though he does not honor his father or his mother. Thus, by your tradition, you have made the Commandment of God of no authority.

“O hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied well of you, saying,

“‘This people draws near to Me with their mouth, and honors Me with the lips, but their heart is far away from Me.

‘But they worship Me in vain, teaching men’s precepts as doctrines.’”

10 Then He called the multitude to Him, and said to them, “Hear, and understand.

11 “That which goes into the mouth, does not defile the man. But that which comes out of the mouth, defiles the man.”

12 Then His disciples came, and said to Him, “Are you not aware that the Pharisees, having heard this saying, are offended?”

13 But He answered and said, “Every plant which My Heavenly Father has not planted, shall be rooted up.

14 “Let them be. They are the blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.”

15 Then Peter answered, and said to Him, “Explain the parable to us.”

16 Then Jesus said, “Are you still without understanding?

17 “Do you not understand that whatever enters into the mouth, goes into the belly, and is cast out into the drain?

18 “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile the man.

19 “For out of the heart comes evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, slanders.

20 “These are the things which defile the man. But to eat with unwashed hands, does not defile the man.”

21 And Jesus left there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

22 And behold, a Gentile woman came out of the same region, and cried, saying to Him, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, the Son of David! My daughter is badly possessed by a demon!”

23 But He did not answer her a word. Then His disciples came to Him and urged Him, saying, “Send her away. For she cries after us.”

24 But He answered, and said, “I am not sent, but to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.”

25 Still, she came and worshipped Him, saying, “Lord help me.”

26 And He answered, and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and cast it to the dogs.”

27 But she said, “Truth, Lord. Yet, even the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their master’s table.”

28 Then Jesus answered, and said to her, “O, woman. Great is your faith. Let it be as you desire.” And her daughter was made whole at that hour.

29 So Jesus went away from there, and came near to the Sea of Galilee, and went up in a mountain and sat down there.

30 And great multitudes came to Him - having with them lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others - and cast them down at Jesus’ feet. And He healed them.

31 So much so that the multitude wondered to see the dumb speak, the maimed whole, the lame walk, and the blind see. And they glorified the God of Israel.

32 Then Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said, “I have compassion on this multitude because they have remained with Me three days now and have had nothing to eat. And I will not let them depart fasting, lest they faint on the way.”

33 And His disciples said to Him, “From where would we get so much bread in the wilderness that would suffice so great a multitude?”

34 And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few little fish.”

35 Then He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.

36 And took the seven loaves, and the fish, and gave thanks; and broke them, and gave them to His disciples. And the disciples gave them to the multitude.

37 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the fragments that remained.

38 And those who had eaten (besides women and little children) were four thousand men.

39 Then Jesus sent away the multitude. And He took a ship and came into the region of Magdala.
