Bearing the Weaknesses of Others
15 Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of (A)those without strength and not just please ourselves. 2 Each of us is to (B)please his neighbor [a]for his good, to his (C)building up. 3 For even (D)Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, “(E)The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.” 4 For (F)whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through the perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. 5 Now may the (G)God of perseverance and encouragement grant you (H)to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, 6 so that with one accord you may with one [b]voice glorify (I)the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Christ, the Hope of Jews and Gentiles
7 Therefore, (J)accept one another, just as Christ also accepted [c]us to the glory of God. 8 For I say that Christ has become a servant to (K)the circumcision on behalf of the truth of God to confirm (L)the promises given to the fathers, 9 and for (M)the Gentiles to (N)glorify God for His mercy; as it is written,
10 And again he says,
“(P)Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people.”
11 And again,
12 And again Isaiah says,
“(R)There shall come (S)the root of Jesse,
And He who arises to rule over the Gentiles,
(T)In Him shall the Gentiles hope.”
13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all (U)joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope (V)by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Paul’s Ministry Plans
14 But I myself am also convinced about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of (W)goodness, having been filled with (X)all knowledge and being able also to admonish one another. 15 But I have written very boldly to you on some points so as to remind you again, because of (Y)the grace that was given me [f]by God 16 for me to be (Z)a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, ministering as a priest the (AA)gospel of God, so that my (AB)offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable, having been sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 17 Therefore in Christ Jesus I have (AC)reason for boasting in (AD)things pertaining to God. 18 For I will not be bold to speak of anything [g]except what (AE)Christ has brought about through me, [h]leading to the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed, 19 in the power of [i](AF)signs and wonders, (AG)in the power of the Spirit; so that (AH)from Jerusalem and all around as (AI)far as Illyricum I have [j]fully preached the gospel of Christ. 20 And in this way I make it my ambition to (AJ)proclaim the gospel, not where Christ was already named, (AK)so that I would not build on another man’s foundation; 21 but as it is written,
“(AL)They who had no declaration of Him shall see,
And they who have not heard shall understand.”
22 For this reason (AM)I have often been prevented from coming to you; 23 but now, with no further place for me in these regions, and since I (AN)have had for many years a longing to come to you 24 whenever I (AO)go to Spain—for I hope, passing through, to see you, and to be (AP)helped on my way there by you, when I have first (AQ)enjoyed your company [k]for a while. 25 But now (AR)I am going to Jerusalem to (AS)serve the [l]saints. 26 For (AT)Macedonia and (AU)Achaia were pleased to [m]share with the poor among the saints in Jerusalem. 27 Yes, they were pleased to do so, and they are indebted to them. For (AV)if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual things, they are indebted to minister to them also in material things. 28 Therefore, when I have completed this and (AW)have [n]put my seal on this fruit of theirs, I will (AX)go on by way of you to Spain. 29 And I know that when (AY)I come to you, I will come in the fullness of the blessing of Christ.
30 Now I urge you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by (AZ)the love of the Spirit, to (BA)strive together with me in your prayers to God for me, 31 that I may be (BB)rescued from those who are disobedient in Judea, and that my (BC)service for Jerusalem may prove acceptable to the [o](BD)saints; 32 so that (BE)I may come to you in joy by (BF)the will of God and find rest in your company. 33 Now may (BG)the God of peace be with you all. Amen.
Final Instructions and Greetings
16 Now I (BH)commend to you our sister Phoebe, who is a [p]servant of the church which is at (BI)Cenchrea; 2 that you (BJ)receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the [q](BK)saints, and that you help her in whatever matter she may have need of you; for she herself has also been a benefactor of many, [r]and of myself as well.
3 Greet (BL)Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers (BM)in (BN)Christ Jesus,
4 who for my life risked their own necks, to whom not only do I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles;
5 also greet (BO)the church that is in their house.
Greet Epaenetus, my beloved, who is the (BP)first convert to Christ from [s](BQ)Asia.
6 Greet Mary, who has labored much for you.
7 Greet Andronicus and [t]Junia, my (BR)kinsmen and my (BS)fellow prisoners, who are outstanding to the apostles, who also [u]were (BT)in Christ before me.
8 Greet Ampliatus, my beloved in the Lord.
9 Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker (BU)in Christ, and Stachys my beloved.
10 Greet Apelles, the approved (BV)in Christ. Greet those who are of the household of Aristobulus.
11 Greet Herodion, my (BW)kinsman.
Greet those of the household of Narcissus, who are in the Lord.
12 Greet Tryphaena and Tryphosa, laborers in the Lord.
Greet Persis the beloved, who labored much in the Lord.
13 Greet (BX)Rufus, a choice man in the Lord, also his mother and mine.
14 Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas and the brothers with them.
15 Greet Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all (BY)the [v]saints who are with them.
16 (BZ)Greet one another with a holy kiss.
All the churches of Christ greet you.
17 Now I urge you, brothers, to keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and stumblings (CA)contrary to the teaching which you learned, and (CB)turn away from them. 18 For such men are (CC)slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of (CD)their own [w]stomach, and by their (CE)smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting. 19 For the report of your obedience (CF)has reached to all. Therefore I am rejoicing over you, but (CG)I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil. 20 (CH)And the God of peace will soon crush (CI)Satan under your feet.
(CJ)The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.
21 (CK)Timothy my fellow worker greets you, and so do (CL)Lucius and (CM)Jason and (CN)Sosipater, my (CO)kinsmen.
22 I, Tertius, who (CP)wrote this letter, greet you in the Lord.
23 (CQ)Gaius, host to me and to the whole church, greets you. (CR)Erastus, the city treasurer greets you, and Quartus, the brother. 24 [x][The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.]
25 (CS)Now to Him who is able to strengthen you (CT)according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of (CU)the mystery which has been kept secret for (CV)long ages past, 26 but now is manifested, and by (CW)the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the Gentiles, leading to (CX)obedience of faith; 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, (CY)be the glory forever. Amen.
Christ Is Undivided
1 Paul, (CZ)called as an apostle of Jesus Christ [y]by (DA)the will of God, and (DB)Sosthenes our (DC)brother,
2 To (DD)the church of God which is at (DE)Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, (DF)called as [z]saints, with all who in every place (DG)call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:
3 (DH)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
4 (DI)I thank [aa]my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus, 5 that in everything you were (DJ)enriched in Him, in all (DK)word and (DL)all knowledge, 6 even as (DM)the witness about Christ was confirmed [ab]in you, 7 so that you are not lacking in any gift, (DN)eagerly awaiting the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, 8 (DO)who will also confirm you to the end, beyond reproach in (DP)the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 (DQ)God is faithful, through whom you were (DR)called into (DS)fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
10 Now (DT)I exhort you, (DU)brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all [ac]agree and that there be no [ad](DV)divisions among you, but that you be [ae]made complete in (DW)the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For I have been informed concerning you, my brothers, by Chloe’s people, that there are quarrels among you. 12 Now I mean this, that (DX)each one of you is saying, “I am of Paul,” and “I of (DY)Apollos,” and “I of (DZ)Cephas,” and “I of Christ.” 13 [af]Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you (EA)baptized [ag]in the name of Paul? 14 [ah]I thank God that I (EB)baptized none of you except (EC)Crispus and (ED)Gaius, 15 so that no one would say you were baptized [ai]in my name. 16 Now I did baptize also the (EE)household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any other. 17 (EF)For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to proclaim the gospel, (EG)not in wisdom of word, so that the cross of Christ will not be made empty.
Christ the Power and Wisdom of God
18 For the word of the cross is (EH)foolishness to (EI)those who [aj]are perishing, but to us who [ak]are being saved, it is (EJ)the power of God. 19 For it is written,
“(EK)I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
And the cleverness of the clever I will set aside.”
20 (EL)Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of (EM)this age? Has not God (EN)made foolish the wisdom of (EO)the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, (EP)the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, (EQ)God was well-pleased, through the (ER)foolishness of the [al]message preached, to (ES)save those who believe. 22 For indeed (ET)Jews ask for [am]signs and Greeks search for wisdom, 23 but we preach [an](EU)Christ crucified, (EV)to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles (EW)foolishness, 24 but to those who are (EX)the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ (EY)the power of God and (EZ)the wisdom of God. 25 Because the (FA)foolishness of God is wiser than men, and (FB)the weakness of God is stronger than men.
26 For [ao]consider your (FC)calling, brothers, that there were (FD)not many wise according to [ap]the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble. 27 But (FE)God has chosen the foolish things of (FF)the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of (FG)the world to shame the things which are strong, 28 and the base things of (FH)the world and the despised God has chosen, (FI)the things that are not, so that He may (FJ)abolish the things that are, 29 so that (FK)no flesh may boast before God. 30 But by His doing you are in (FL)Christ Jesus, who became to us (FM)wisdom from God, [aq]and (FN)righteousness and (FO)sanctification, and (FP)redemption, 31 so that, just as it is written, “(FQ)Let him who boasts, boast in the [ar]Lord.”
Paul’s Reliance upon the Spirit
2 And when I came to you, brothers, I (FR)did not come with superiority of word or of wisdom, proclaiming to you (FS)the [as]witness of God. 2 For I determined to know nothing among you except (FT)Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. 3 And I was with you in (FU)weakness and in (FV)fear and in much trembling, 4 and my word and my preaching were (FW)not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of (FX)the Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith would not be in the wisdom of men, but in (FY)the power of God.
6 Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are (FZ)mature, a wisdom, however, not of (GA)this age nor of the rulers of (GB)this age, who are (GC)being abolished. 7 But we speak God’s wisdom in a (GD)mystery, the wisdom which has been hidden, which God (GE)predestined before the (GF)ages to our glory, 8 (GG)which none of the rulers of (GH)this age has understood; for if they had understood it, they would not have crucified (GI)the Lord of glory. 9 But just as it is written,
“(GJ)Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the heart of man,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him.”
10 [at](GK)But to us God revealed them (GL)through the Spirit, for the Spirit searches all things, even the (GM)depths of God. 11 For who among men knows the depths of a man except the (GN)spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the depths of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we (GO)have received, not the spirit of (GP)the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the depths graciously given to us by God, 13 of which depths we also speak, (GQ)not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, [au]combining spiritual depths with spiritual words.
14 But [av]a (GR)natural man (GS)does not accept the depths of the Spirit of God, for they are (GT)foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because (GU)they are spiritually examined. 15 But he who is (GV)spiritual examines all things, yet he himself is examined by no one. 16 For (GW)who has known the mind of the [aw]Lord, that he will direct Him? But (GX)we have the mind of Christ.
Jesus Christ, Our Foundation
3 And I, brothers, was not able to speak to you as to (GY)spiritual men, but as to (GZ)fleshly men, as to (HA)infants in Christ. 2 I gave you (HB)milk to drink, not solid food, for you (HC)were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are still not able, 3 for you are still fleshly. For since there is (HD)jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking [ax](HE)like mere men? 4 For when (HF)one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not mere (HG)men?
5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? (HH)Servants through whom you believed, even (HI)as the Lord gave to each one. 6 (HJ)I planted, (HK)Apollos watered, but (HL)God was causing the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth. 8 Now he who plants and he who waters are one, but each will (HM)receive his own [ay]reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s (HN)fellow workers; you are God’s [az](HO)field, God’s (HP)building.
10 According to (HQ)the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder (HR)I laid a foundation, and (HS)another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it. 11 For no one can lay a (HT)foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, [ba]precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 (HU)each man’s work will become evident, for (HV)the day will indicate it because it is revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test [bb]the quality of each man’s work. 14 If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will (HW)receive a reward. 15 If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, but he himself will be saved, yet (HX)so as through fire.
16 (HY)Do you not know that (HZ)you are a [bc]sanctuary of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If any man destroys the [bd]sanctuary of God, God will destroy him, for the [be]sanctuary of God is holy, and [bf]that is what you are.
18 (IA)Let no man deceive himself. (IB)If any man among you thinks that he is wise in (IC)this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise. 19 For (ID)the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. For it is written, “He is (IE)the one who catches the wise in their craftiness”; 20 and again, “(IF)The Lord knows the reasonings of the wise, that they are useless.” 21 So then (IG)let no one boast in men. For (IH)all things belong to you, 22 (II)whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or (IJ)life or death or things present or things to come; all things belong to you, 23 and (IK)you belong to Christ, and (IL)Christ belongs to God.
Servants of Christ
4 Let a man consider us in this manner, as (IM)servants of Christ and (IN)stewards of (IO)the mysteries of God. 2 In this case, moreover, it is required [bg]of stewards that one be found faithful. 3 But to me it is a very small thing that I may be examined by you, or by any human [bh]court. In fact, I do not even examine myself. 4 For I (IP)am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this (IQ)acquitted. But the one who examines me is the Lord. 5 Therefore (IR)do not go on [bi]passing judgment before [bj]the time, but wait (IS)until the Lord comes who will both (IT)bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and make manifest the motives of hearts. And then each one’s (IU)praise will come to him from God.
6 Now these things, brothers, I have applied to myself and Apollos for your sakes, so that in us you may learn not to go beyond (IV)what is written, so that no one of you will (IW)become puffed up (IX)on behalf of one against the other. 7 For who regards you as superior? (IY)What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?
8 You are (IZ)already filled, you have already become rich, you have ruled without us—and how I wish that you had ruled indeed so that we also might rule with you. 9 For, I think that God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as men (JA)condemned to death, because we (JB)have become a spectacle to the world, and to angels, and to men. 10 We are (JC)fools for the sake of Christ, but (JD)you are prudent in Christ! (JE)We are weak, but you are strong! You are glorious, but we are without honor! 11 To this present hour we (JF)hunger and thirst, and are poorly clothed, and roughly treated, and homeless; 12 and we labor, (JG)working with our own hands; when we are (JH)reviled, we bless; when we are (JI)persecuted, we endure; 13 when we are slandered, we try to plead; we have (JJ)become as the scum of the world, the grime of all things, even until now.
14 I do not write these things to (JK)shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved (JL)children. 15 For if you were to have countless (JM)tutors in Christ, yet you would not have many fathers, for in (JN)Christ Jesus I (JO)became your father through the (JP)gospel. 16 Therefore I exhort you, be (JQ)imitators of me. 17 For this reason I (JR)have sent to you (JS)Timothy, who is my (JT)beloved and faithful child in the Lord, and who will remind you of my ways which are in Christ, (JU)just as I teach everywhere in every church. 18 Now some have become (JV)puffed up, as though I were not (JW)coming to you. 19 But I (JX)will come to you soon, (JY)if the Lord wills, and I shall know, not the [bk]words of those who are (JZ)puffed up but their power. 20 For the kingdom of God does (KA)not consist in [bl]words but in power. 21 What do you desire? (KB)Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love and a spirit of gentleness?
Sexual Immorality in the Church
5 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and sexual immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, that someone has (KC)his father’s wife. 2 And [bm]you (KD)have become puffed up and [bn]have not (KE)mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be (KF)removed from your midst.
3 For I, on my part, though (KG)absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present: 4 (KH)in the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and [bo]I with you in spirit, (KI)with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 (KJ)deliver such a one to (KK)Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in (KL)the day of [bp]the Lord.
6 (KM)Your boasting is not good. (KN)Do you not know that (KO)a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 7 Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ, our (KP)Passover lamb, also was sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us celebrate the feast, (KQ)not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
9 I wrote you in my letter (KR)not to associate with sexually immoral people; 10 I did not at all mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the greedy and swindlers, or with (KS)idolaters, for then you would have to go out of the world. 11 But now I am writing to you not to associate [bq]with any so-called (KT)brother if he is a sexually immoral person, or greedy, or (KU)an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler—not even to eat with such a one. 12 For what have I to do with judging (KV)outsiders? (KW)Are you not to judge those who are within the church? 13 But those who are outside, God will judge. (KX)Remove the wicked man from among yourselves.
Lawsuits Among Believers
6 Does any one of you, when he has a [br]case against another, dare to be tried before the unrighteous and (KY)not before the [bs]saints? 2 Or (KZ)do you not know that (LA)the [bt]saints will judge (LB)the world? If the world is judged by you, are you not worthy to [bu]constitute the smallest law courts? 3 (LC)Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more matters of this life? 4 So if you have law courts dealing with matters of this life, do you appoint those who are of no account in the church as judges? 5 (LD)I say this to your shame. Is it really this way: there is not one wise man among you who will be able to pass judgment between his (LE)brothers? 6 On the contrary, brother is tried with brother, and that before (LF)unbelievers!
7 Actually, then, it is already a failure for you, that you have lawsuits with one another. (LG)Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be defrauded? 8 On the contrary, you yourselves wrong and defraud. You do this even to your (LH)brothers.
9 Or (LI)do you not know that the unrighteous will not (LJ)inherit the kingdom of God? (LK)Do not be deceived; (LL)neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor [bv]effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will (LM)inherit the kingdom of God. 11 (LN)And such were some of you; but you were (LO)washed, but you were (LP)sanctified, but you were (LQ)justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
Flee Sexual Immorality
12 (LR)All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 (LS)Food is for the [bw]stomach and the [bx]stomach is for food, but God will (LT)do away with both [by]of them. Yet the body is not for sexual immorality, but (LU)for the Lord, and (LV)the Lord is for the body. 14 Now God has not only (LW)raised the Lord, but (LX)will also raise us up through His power. 15 (LY)Do you not know that (LZ)your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? (MA)May it never be! 16 Or (MB)do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, “(MC)The two shall become one flesh.” 17 But the one who joins himself to the Lord is (MD)one spirit with Him. 18 (ME)Flee sexual immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the [bz]sexually immoral man sins against his own body. 19 Or (MF)do you not know that (MG)your body is a [ca]sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from [cb]God, and that (MH)you are not your own? 20 For (MI)you were bought with a price: therefore glorify God in (MJ)your body.
Concerning Marriage and Singleness
7 Now concerning the things about which you wrote, it is (MK)good for a man not to touch a woman. 2 But because of sexual immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband. 3 The husband must [cc]fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband. 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5 (ML)Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and [cd]come together again so that (MM)Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 6 But this I say as a concession, (MN)not as a command. 7 [ce]Yet I wish that all men were (MO)even as I myself am. However, (MP)each man has his own gift from God, one this way, and another that.
8 But I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is (MQ)good for them if they remain (MR)even as I. 9 But if they do not have self-control, (MS)let them marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
10 But to the married I give instructions, (MT)not I, but the Lord, that the wife should not [cf]leave her husband 11 (but if she does leave, she must remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband should not [cg]divorce his wife.
12 But to the rest (MU)I say, not the Lord, that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he must not [ch]divorce her. 13 And a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not divorce her husband. 14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through [ci]her believing husband. For otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are (MV)holy. 15 Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave. The brother or the sister is not enslaved in such cases, but God has called [cj]us [ck](MW)to peace. 16 For how do you know, O wife, whether you will (MX)save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?
17 Only, (MY)as the Lord has assigned to each one, as God has called each, in this manner let him walk. And (MZ)so I direct in (NA)all the churches. 18 Was any man called when he was already circumcised? He is not to become uncircumcised. Has anyone been called in uncircumcision? (NB)He is not to be circumcised. 19 (NC)Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but what matters is (ND)the keeping of the commandments of God. 20 (NE)Each man must remain in that [cl]condition in which he was called.
21 Were you called while a slave? [cm]Do not worry about it. But if you are able also to become free, rather [cn]do that. 22 For he who was called in the Lord while a slave, is (NF)the Lord’s freedman. Likewise he who was called while free, is (NG)Christ’s slave. 23 (NH)You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men. 24 Brothers, (NI)each one is to remain with God in that condition in which he was called.
25 Now concerning virgins I have (NJ)no command of the Lord, but I give an opinion as one who [co](NK)by the mercy of the Lord is trustworthy. 26 I think then that this is good because of the [cp]present (NL)distress, that (NM)it is good for a man [cq]to remain as he is. 27 Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be released. Are you released from a wife? Do not seek a wife. 28 But if you marry, you have not sinned. And if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Yet such will have [cr]trouble in this life, and I am trying to spare you. 29 But this I say, brothers, (NN)the time has been shortened, so that from now on those who have wives should be as though they had none; 30 and those who cry, as though they did not cry; and those who rejoice, as though they did not rejoice; and those who buy, as though they did not possess; 31 and those who use the world, as though they did not (NO)make full use of it. For (NP)the form of this world is passing away.
32 But I want you to be free from concern. One who is (NQ)unmarried is concerned about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord. 33 But one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, 34 and his interests have been divided. The woman who is unmarried, and the virgin, is concerned about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and spirit. But one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how she may please her husband. 35 Now this I say for your own benefit, not to put a restraint upon you, but [cs]to promote propriety and undistracted devotion to the Lord.
36 But if any man thinks that he is acting unbecomingly toward his virgin daughter, if she is past her youth, and if it must be so, let him do what he wishes, he does not sin; let [ct]her marry. 37 But he who stands firm in his heart, [cu]being under no compulsion, but has authority [cv]over his own will, and has decided this in his own heart, to keep his own virgin daughter, he will do well. 38 So then both he who gives his own virgin daughter in marriage does well, and he who does not give her in marriage will do better.
39 (NR)A wife is bound as long as her husband lives; but if her husband has [cw]fallen asleep, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only (NS)in the Lord. 40 But (NT)in my opinion she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think that I also have the Spirit of God.
Take Care with Your Liberty
8 Now concerning (NU)things sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have (NV)knowledge. Knowledge (NW)puffs up, but love (NX)builds up. 2 (NY)If anyone thinks that he has known anything, he has not yet (NZ)known as he ought to know; 3 but if anyone loves God, he (OA)has been known by Him.
4 Therefore, concerning the eating of (OB)things sacrificed to idols, we know that [cx]an idol is (OC)nothing in the world, and that (OD)there is no God but one. 5 For even if (OE)there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, 6 yet for us (OF)there is one God, (OG)the Father, (OH)from whom are all things and we exist for Him, and (OI)one Lord, Jesus Christ, (OJ)by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.
7 However, not all men (OK)have this knowledge; but (OL)some, being accustomed to the idol until now, eat food as if it were sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8 But (OM)food will not [cy]commend us to God. We neither lack if we do not eat, nor abound if we do eat. 9 But (ON)see to it that this [cz]authority of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the (OO)weak. 10 For if someone sees you, who have (OP)knowledge, dining in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be built up to eat (OQ)things sacrificed to idols? 11 For through (OR)your knowledge he who is weak (OS)is ruined, the brother for whose sake Christ died. 12 (OT)And in that way, by sinning against the brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin (OU)against Christ. 13 Therefore, (OV)if food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again—ever, so that I will not cause my brother to stumble.
Paul Gives Up His Rights
9 Am I not (OW)free? Am I not an (OX)apostle? Have I not (OY)seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not (OZ)my work in the Lord? 2 If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you, for you are the (PA)seal of my (PB)apostleship in the Lord.
3 My defense to those who examine me is this: 4 (PC)Do we not have authority to eat and drink? 5 (PD)Do we not have authority to take along a [da]believing wife, even as the rest of the apostles and the (PE)brothers of the Lord and (PF)Cephas? 6 Or do only [db](PG)Barnabas and I not have authority to refrain from working? 7 Who at any time serves (PH)as a soldier at his own expense? Who (PI)plants a vineyard and does not [dc]consume the fruit of it? Or who shepherds a flock and does not [dd]consume the milk of the flock?
8 Am I speaking these things (PJ)according to [de]human judgment? Or does not the Law also say these things? 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses, “(PK)You shall not muzzle the ox while it is threshing.” Is God merely concerned about (PL)oxen? 10 Or is He speaking altogether for our sake? Yes, (PM)for our sake it was written, because (PN)the plowman ought to plow in hope, and the thresher to thresh in hope of sharing the crops. 11 (PO)If we sowed spiritual things in you, is it too much if we reap material things from you? 12 If others share this authority over you, do we not more? Nevertheless, we (PP)did not use this authority, but we endure all things (PQ)so that we will cause no hindrance to the (PR)gospel of Christ. 13 (PS)Do you not know that those who (PT)perform sacred services eat the food of the temple, and those who attend regularly to the altar have their share [df]from the altar? 14 So also (PU)the Lord directed those who proclaim the (PV)gospel to (PW)get their living from the gospel.
15 But I have (PX)used none of these things. And I am not writing these things so that it will be done so in my case, for it would be better for me to die than have anyone make (PY)my boast an empty one. 16 For if I proclaim the gospel, I have nothing to boast, for (PZ)I am under compulsion. For woe is me if I do not proclaim (QA)the gospel. 17 For if I do this voluntarily, I have a (QB)reward; but if against my will, I have a (QC)stewardship entrusted to me. 18 What then is my (QD)reward? That, when I proclaim the gospel, I may offer the gospel (QE)without charge, so as (QF)not to make full use of my authority in the gospel.
19 For though I am (QG)free from all, I have made myself (QH)a slave to all, so that I may (QI)win more. 20 (QJ)And to the Jews I became as a Jew, so that I might win Jews. To those who are under [dg]the Law, as under [dh]the Law though (QK)not being myself under [di]the Law, so that I might win those who are under [dj]the Law. 21 To those who are (QL)without law, (QM)as without law, though not being without the law of God but (QN)under the law of Christ, so that I might win those who are without law. 22 To the (QO)weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become (QP)all things to all men, (QQ)so that I may by all means save some. 23 So I do all things for the sake of the gospel, so that I may become a fellow partaker of it.
24 (QR)Do you not know that those who run in a [dk]race all run, but only one receives (QS)the prize? (QT)Run in such a way that you may win. 25 Now everyone who (QU)competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a corruptible (QV)crown, but we an incorruptible. 26 Therefore I (QW)run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not (QX)beating the air; 27 but I [dl]discipline (QY)my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
Temptation and God’s Faithfulness
10 For (QZ)I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all (RA)under the cloud and all (RB)passed through the sea; 2 and all were (RC)baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3 and all (RD)ate the same spiritual food; 4 and all (RE)drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them, and the rock was [dm]Christ. 5 Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased. For (RF)they were [dn]struck down in the wilderness. 6 Now these things happened as (RG)examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as (RH)they also craved.
7 Do not be (RI)idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, “(RJ)The people sat down to eat and drink, and stood up to (RK)play.” 8 Nor let us act in sexual immorality, as (RL)some of them [do]did, and (RM)twenty-three thousand fell in one day. 9 Nor let us put Christ to the test, as (RN)some of them [dp]did, and were destroyed by the serpents. 10 Nor (RO)grumble, as some of them [dq]did, and (RP)were destroyed by the (RQ)destroyer. 11 Now these things happened to them as an (RR)example, and (RS)they were written for our instruction, upon whom (RT)the ends of the ages have arrived. 12 Therefore let him who (RU)thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man, but (RV)God is faithful, who will not allow you to be (RW)tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
14 Therefore, my (RX)beloved, flee from (RY)idolatry. 15 I speak as to prudent people. You judge what I say. 16 Is not the (RZ)cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the [dr](SA)bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ? 17 Since there is one [ds]bread, we (SB)who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one [dt]bread. 18 Look at [du]the nation (SC)Israel. Are not those who (SD)eat the sacrifices sharers in the altar? 19 What do I mean then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or (SE)that an idol is anything? 20 No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they (SF)sacrifice to demons and not to God. And I do not want you to become sharers in demons. 21 (SG)You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and (SH)the table of demons. 22 Or do we (SI)provoke the [dv]Lord to jealousy? Are we (SJ)stronger than He?
23 (SK)All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things (SL)build up. 24 Let no one (SM)seek his own good, but that of the other person. 25 (SN)Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions for conscience’ sake. 26 (SO)For the earth is the [dw]Lord’s, as well as its fullness. 27 If (SP)one of the unbelievers invites you and you want to go, (SQ)eat anything that is set before you without asking questions for conscience’ sake. 28 But (SR)if anyone says to you, “This is meat consecrated to idols,” do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for conscience’ sake. 29 I do not mean your own conscience, but the other person’s. For (SS)why is my freedom judged by another’s conscience? 30 If I partake with gratefulness, (ST)why am I slandered concerning that for which I (SU)give thanks?
31 Whether, then, you eat or drink or (SV)whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 32 (SW)Give no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to (SX)the church of God; 33 just as I also (SY)please all men in all things, (SZ)not seeking my own profit but the profit of the many, (TA)so that they may be saved.
11 (TB)Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.
Head Coverings
2 Now (TC)I praise you because you (TD)remember me in everything and (TE)hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you. 3 But I want you to understand that [dx]Christ is the (TF)head of every man, and (TG)the man is the head of a woman, and God is the (TH)head of [dy]Christ. 4 Every man who has something on his head while praying or (TI)prophesying, shames his head. 5 But every (TJ)woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying, shames her head, for she is one and the same as the woman [dz]whose head is (TK)shaved. 6 For if a woman does not cover [ea]her head, let her also [eb]have her hair cut short. But if it is disgraceful for a woman to [ec]have her hair cut short or [ed]her head shaved, let her cover [ee]her head. 7 For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the (TL)image and glory of God, but the woman is the glory of man. 8 For (TM)man [ef]does not originate from woman, but woman from man. 9 For indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but (TN)woman for the man’s sake. 10 Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord, neither is woman [eg]independent of man, nor is man [eh]independent of woman. 12 For as the woman [ei]originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman, but (TO)all things [ej]originate (TP)from God. 13 (TQ)Judge [ek]for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering. 16 But if one is inclined to be contentious, (TR)we have no [el]other practice, nor have (TS)the churches of God.
The Lord’s Supper
17 But in giving this instruction, (TT)I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse. 18 For, in the first place, when you come together [em]as a church, I hear that [en](TU)divisions exist among you, and in part I believe it. 19 For there (TV)must also be factions among you, (TW)so that those who are approved may become [eo]evident among you. 20 Therefore when you meet together in the same place, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper, 21 for in your eating each one takes his own supper first, and one is hungry and (TX)another is drunk. 22 For do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the (TY)church of God and (TZ)shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall (UA)I praise you? In this I will not praise you.
23 For (UB)I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that (UC)the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was being betrayed took bread, 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He took (UD)the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the (UE)new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord (UF)until He comes.
27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be (UG)guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But a man must (UH)test himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. 30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number [ep](UI)sleep. 31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are (UJ)disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with (UK)the world.
33 So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 34 If anyone is (UL)hungry, let him eat (UM)at home, so that you will not come together for judgment. The remaining matters I will (UN)direct (UO)when I come.
Concerning Spiritual Gifts
12 Now concerning (UP)spiritual gifts, brothers, (UQ)I do not want you to be ignorant. 2 (UR)You know that when you were pagans, you were (US)being led astray to the (UT)mute idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking [eq](UU)by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is [er](UV)accursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is (UW)Lord,” except [es](UX)by the Holy Spirit.
4 Now there are (UY)varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6 And there are varieties of workings, but the same (UZ)God who works everything in everyone. 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit (VA)for what is profitable. 8 For to one is given the word of (VB)wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of (VC)knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to someone else (VD)faith [et]by the same Spirit, and to another (VE)gifts of [eu]healing [ev]by the one Spirit, 10 and to another the workings of (VF)miracles, and to another (VG)prophecy, and to another the [ew](VH)distinguishing of spirits, to someone else various (VI)kinds of tongues, and to another the [ex](VJ)translation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, (VK)distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
12 For even (VL)as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, (VM)so also is Christ. 13 For also [ey](VN)by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether (VO)Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to (VP)drink of one Spirit.
14 For also (VQ)the body is not one member, but many. 15 If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason [ez]any the less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason [fa]any the less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But now God has (VR)appointed the members, each one of them, in the body, (VS)just as He desired. 19 And if they were all one member, where would the body be? 20 But now (VT)there are many members, but one body. 21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; or again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, how much more is it that the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary, 23 and those members of the body which we think as less honorable, [fb]on these we bestow more abundant honor, and our less presentable members become much more presentable, 24 whereas our more presentable members have no such need. But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked, 25 so that there may be no [fc]division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is [fd]honored, all the members rejoice with it.
27 Now you are (VU)Christ’s body, and (VV)individually members of it. 28 And God has [fe](VW)appointed in (VX)the church, first (VY)apostles, second (VZ)prophets, third (WA)teachers, then [ff](WB)miracles, then (WC)gifts of healings, helps, (WD)administrations, various (WE)kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of [fg]miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all [fh](WF)translate? 31 But [fi]you (WG)earnestly desire the greater gifts.
And I will yet show you a more excellent way.
The Excellence of Love
13 If I speak with the (WH)tongues of men and of (WI)angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a (WJ)clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have the gift of (WK)prophecy, and know all (WL)mysteries and all (WM)knowledge; and if I have (WN)all faith, so as to (WO)remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 And if I (WP)give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I (WQ)surrender my body [fj]to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.
4 Love (WR)is patient, love is kind, (WS)is not jealous, does not brag, is not (WT)puffed up; 5 it does not act unbecomingly, (WU)does not seek its own, is not provoked, (WV)does not take into account a wrong suffered; 6 (WW)it does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but (WX)rejoices with the truth; 7 [fk](WY)it bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never fails, but if there are gifts of [fl](WZ)prophecy, they will be done away; if there are (XA)tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we (XB)know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the [fm]perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child. When I [fn]became a man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we (XC)see in a mirror [fo]dimly, but then (XD)face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also (XE)have been fully known. 13 But now abide faith, hope, love—these three; but the [fp]greatest of these is (XF)love.
Prophecy and Tongues
14 (XG)Pursue love, yet (XH)earnestly desire (XI)spiritual gifts, but especially that you may (XJ)prophesy. 2 For one who (XK)speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one [fq]understands, but [fr]in his spirit he speaks (XL)mysteries. 3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for (XM)edification and (XN)exhortation and encouragement. 4 One who (XO)speaks in a tongue (XP)edifies himself; but one who (XQ)prophesies (XR)edifies the church. 5 But I wish that you all (XS)spoke in tongues, but (XT)even more that you would prophesy. And greater is one who prophesies than one who (XU)speaks in tongues, unless he [fs]translates, so that the church may receive (XV)edification.
6 But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of (XW)revelation or of (XX)knowledge or of (XY)prophecy or of (XZ)teaching? 7 Yet even lifeless things, either flute or harp, in producing a sound, if they do not produce a distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp? 8 For if (YA)the trumpet produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle? 9 So also you, unless you utter by the tongue a word that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be (YB)speaking into the air. 10 There are, perhaps, a great many kinds of sounds in the world, and none is without meaning. 11 If then I do not know the meaning of the sound, I will be to the one who speaks a [ft](YC)barbarian, and the one who speaks will be a [fu]barbarian [fv]to me. 12 So also you, since you are zealous for [fw]spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the (YD)edification of the church.
13 Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may [fx]translate. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 (YE)What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will (YF)sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also. 16 Otherwise if you bless [fy]in the spirit only, how will the one who fills the place of the [fz]uninformed say (YG)the “Amen” at your (YH)giving of thanks, since he does not know what you are saying? 17 For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not (YI)edified. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than you all; 19 however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20 (YJ)Brothers, (YK)do not be children in your thinking; rather in evil (YL)be infants, but in your thinking be mature. 21 In (YM)the Law it is written, “(YN)By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people, and even so they will not listen to Me,” says the [ga]Lord. 22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but (YO)prophecy is for a sign not to unbelievers but to those who believe. 23 Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and [gb]uninformed men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that (YP)you are out of your mind? 24 But if all (YQ)prophesy, and an unbeliever or an [gc]uninformed man enters, he is (YR)convicted by all, he is called to account by all; 25 (YS)the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will (YT)fall on his face and worship God, declaring that (YU)surely God is among you.
Orderly Worship
26 (YV)What is the outcome then, (YW)brothers? When you assemble, (YX)each one has a (YY)psalm, has a (YZ)teaching, has a (ZA)revelation, has a (ZB)tongue, has a [gd](ZC)translation. Let (ZD)all things be done for edification. 27 If anyone speaks in a (ZE)tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must [ge](ZF)translate; 28 but if there is no [gf]translator, he must keep silent in the church, and let him speak to himself and to God. 29 And let two or three (ZG)prophets speak, and let the others (ZH)pass judgment. 30 But if a revelation is made to another who is seated, the first one must keep silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted. 32 And the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets; 33 for God is not a God of (ZI)confusion but of [gg]peace, as in (ZJ)all the churches of the (ZK)saints.
34 The women are to (ZL)keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak, but (ZM)are to subject themselves, just as (ZN)the Law also says. 35 But if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in church. 36 [gh]Was it from you that the word of God first went forth? Or has it arrived to you only?
37 (ZO)If anyone thinks he is a prophet or (ZP)spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you (ZQ)are the Lord’s commandment. 38 But if anyone remains ignorant about this, he [gi]is ignored by God.
39 Therefore, my brothers, (ZR)earnestly desire to (ZS)prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues. 40 But (ZT)all things must be done properly and in an orderly manner.
