Clothed in Righteousness

“I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness.” Isaiah 61:10

In the Bible, Isaiah speaks of a robe of righteousness; Matthew writes of not worrying about clothes; Peter tells us to be clothed in humility. In Luke’s parable of The Prodigal Son, with its picture of God’s love and longing for us, the father sees his wayward son a long way off, runs to him, embraces him, and orders the servants to bring him the best robe in the house. Our “clothing” as believers is important!

“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Romans 4:23-24 says, “The words ‘it was credited to him’ were written not for him [Abraham] alone, but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.”

The bride of Christ—that is the church—is clothed in white linen (see Revelation 19). Because He gave His life for us at Calvary and was stripped of His clothes and beaten, our Savior looks at believers—prideful and sinful though we are—and sees us clothed in robes of righteousness.
