Words from the Cross: Done
“When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” John 19:30
Doesn’t everyone love crossing a job off a list, concluding a long assignment at work, or putting the final touches on something you’ve made? When you’ve finished a project, you have a glorious feeling of accomplishment.
When Jesus declared, “It is finished,” His words held finality and certainty beyond what we can ever know. He’d done what He came to do. He submitted perfectly to being born as a baby, growing up in a human family, being filled with the Holy Spirit, preaching God’s Word, teaching His disciples, enduring suffering, and dying on the cross. Setting aside the glory of heaven for you and me, His earthly ministry and the physical pain of it were complete.
God, in the form of a sinless man, paid the penalty for our sins—past, present, and future. Because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, we are forgiven and can spend eternity with Him. Other religions tell us how to work our way to God. Only Christianity offers a Savior who came down to us. Other religions tell what man must do, but the believer in Jesus Christ knows it’s already been done.
