Words of Life
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path …. Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart.” Psalm 119:105, 111
Our Creator gave us a variety of ways in which to communicate with each other. The most prized composers, artists, writers, and singers give faint echoes of the astonishing creativity of our God.
While we may not all grasp the messages in the works of Beethoven or Picasso or Dostoevsky, God communicates to us plainly through His Spirit-breathed Word, through His creation, and through a person: Jesus Christ. The opening of the book of John helps us wrap our heads around the mystery that Jesus is the Word who became flesh and made His dwelling among us. Amazing!
We approach Easter this year considering deeply the words Jesus spoke while on the cross. His seven statements have inspired many sermons, books, and works of art. Those sentences uttered in the very moments of unimaginable pain were simple but powerful. We’ll spend the next week dwelling on them and preparing our hearts for resurrection Sunday. Look at them closely with me and marvel at our Savior’s words—words to light our way, to give joy to our hearts, and to bring us life.
