Judas’ Remorse

27 (A)Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel together against Jesus to put Him to death; and they bound Him, and led Him away and (B)delivered Him to (C)Pilate the governor.

Then when (D)Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned (E)the [a]thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? (F)See to that yourself!” And he threw the pieces of silver into (G)the [b]sanctuary and departed; and (H)he went away and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood.” And taking counsel together, they bought [c]with the money the Potter’s Field as a burial place for strangers. (I)For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying, “(J)And [d]they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one whose price had been set by the sons of Israel; 10 (K)and [e]they gave them for the Potters Field, as the [f]Lord directed me.”

Jesus Before Pilate

11 (L)Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, “Are You the (M)King of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him, (N)You yourself say it.” 12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, (O)He did not answer. 13 Then Pilate *said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?” 14 And (P)He did not answer him with regard to even a single [g]charge, so the governor marveled greatly.

15 (Q)Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16 And at that time they were holding a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas. 17 So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you? [h]Barabbas, or Jesus (R)who is called [i]Christ?” 18 For he knew that because of envy they had delivered Him over.

19 (S)Now while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “Have nothing to do with that (T)righteous Man; for [j]last night I suffered greatly (U)in a dream because of Him.” 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to (V)ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death. 21 But the governor answered and said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22 Pilate *said to them, “Then, what shall I do with Jesus (W)who is called [k]Christ?” They all *said, “Let Him be crucified!” 23 And he said, “Why, what evil did He do?” But they were crying out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!”

24 Now when Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that (X)a riot was starting, he took water and (Y)washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of (Z)this man’s blood; (AA)see to that yourselves.” 25 And all the people answered and said, “(AB)His blood be on us and on our children!” 26 Then he released Barabbas [l]for them; but after having Jesus (AC)scourged, he delivered Him over to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

27 (AD)Then when the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into (AE)the [m]Praetorium, they gathered the whole Roman [n](AF)cohort around Him. 28 And they stripped Him and (AG)put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 (AH)And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a [o]reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, “(AI)Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 (AJ)And they spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head. 31 (AK)When they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.

32 (AL)And as they were coming out, they found a man of (AM)Cyrene named Simon, [p]whom they pressed into service to bear His cross.

The Crucifixion

33 (AN)And when they came to a place called (AO)Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, 34 (AP)they gave Him (AQ)wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He did not want to drink.

35 And when they had crucified Him, (AR)they divided up His garments among themselves by casting [q]lots. 36 And sitting down, they began to (AS)keep watch over Him there. 37 And above His head they put up the charge against Him [r]which read, “(AT)THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

38 At that time two robbers *were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those passing by were blaspheming Him, (AU)shaking their heads 40 and saying, “(AV)You who are going to destroy the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! (AW)If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42 (AX)He saved others; [s]He cannot save Himself. (AY)He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43 (AZ)He trusts in God; let God rescue Him now, if He [t]delights in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 (BA)And the robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words.

45 (BB)Now from the [u]sixth hour darkness [v]fell upon all the land until the [w]ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, (BC)Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 47 And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began saying, “This man is calling for Elijah.” 48 (BD)And immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. 49 But the rest of them were saying, “[x]Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him[y].” 50 And Jesus (BE)cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. 51 (BF)And behold, (BG)the [z]veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom; and (BH)the earth shook and the rocks were split. 52 And the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the [aa]saints who had (BI)fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered (BJ)the holy city and appeared to many. 54 (BK)Now the centurion, and those who were with him (BL)keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw (BM)the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this was (BN)God’s Son!”

55 (BO)And many women were there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while [ab](BP)ministering to Him. 56 Among them was (BQ)Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and (BR)the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Jesus Is Buried

57 (BS)Now when it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled (BT)a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 And (BU)Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the grave.

Jesus Before Pilate

15 (A)And early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole (B)Sanhedrin, immediately held council; and binding Jesus, led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate. (C)And Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and *said, “You yourself say it.” And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things. Then Pilate was questioning Him again, saying, “You answer nothing? See how many accusations they bring against You!” But Jesus (D)made no further answer; so Pilate marveled.

(E)Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. And the man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection. And the crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them. And Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he was aware that the chief priests had delivered Him over because of envy. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd (F)to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead. 12 And answering again, Pilate was saying to them, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” 13 And they shouted again, “Crucify Him!” 14 But Pilate was saying to them, “Why? What evil did He do?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify Him!” 15 And wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus (G)scourged, he delivered Him over to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

16 (H)So the soldiers took Him away into (I)the [a]palace (that is, the [b]Praetorium), and they *called together the whole Roman [c](J)cohort. 17 And they *dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they *put it on Him; 18 and they began to greet Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they kept beating His head with a [d]reed, and spitting on Him; and kneeling, they were bowing down before Him. 20 And after they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they *led Him out to crucify Him.

21 (K)And they *pressed into service a passer-by coming from the countryside, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and (L)Rufus), to [e]carry His cross.

The Crucifixion

22 (M)Then they *brought Him to the place (N)Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23 And they tried to give Him (O)wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it. 24 And they *crucified Him, and *(P)divided up His garments among themselves, casting [f]lots for them to decide who should take what. 25 Now it was the [g](Q)third hour, and they crucified Him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against Him [h]read, “(R)THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

27 And they *crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left. 28 [i][And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with transgressors.”] 29 And those passing by were blaspheming Him, (S)shaking their heads, and saying, “Ha! You who are going to (T)destroy the [j]sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, 30 save Yourself by coming down from the cross!” 31 In the same way, mocking Him to one another, the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were saying, “(U)He saved others; [k]He cannot save Himself. 32 Let this [l]Christ, (V)the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” (W)Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

33 (X)And when the [m](Y)sixth hour came, darkness [n]fell over the whole land until the [o](Z)ninth hour. 34 And at the (AA)ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, (AB)Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 35 And when some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, “Look, He is calling for Elijah.” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “[p]Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.” 37 (AC)And Jesus, uttering a loud cry, breathed His last. 38 (AD)And the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 (AE)And when the centurion, who was standing [q]right in front of Him, saw [r]the way He breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was God’s Son!”

40 (AF)And there were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James (AG)the [s]Less and Joses, and (AH)Salome, 41 who, when He was in Galilee, were following Him and [t](AI)serving Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

Jesus Is Buried

42 (AJ)And when evening had already come, because it was [u](AK)Preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a (AL)prominent [v]Council member, who himself was (AM)waiting for the kingdom of God; and he (AN)gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 And Pilate wondered if He had died by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He already died. 45 And ascertaining this from (AO)the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 46 And when Joseph had bought a linen cloth and took Him down, he wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 (AP)And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He had been laid.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin

66 (A)And as the day came, (B)the Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their (C)Sanhedrin, saying, 67 (D)If You are the [a]Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, 68 and if I ask a question, you will not answer. 69 (E)But from now on (F)the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of [b]God.” 70 And they all said, “Are You (G)the Son of God, then?” And He said to them, (H)You yourselves say that I am.” 71 Then they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”

Jesus Before Pilate

23 Then their whole assembly rose up and (I)brought Him before Pilate. (J)And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man (K)misleading our nation and (L)forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is [c]Christ, a King.” So Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and said, (M)You yourself say it.” Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “(N)I find no guilt in this man.” But they kept on insisting, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching all over Judea, (O)starting from Galilee even as far as this place.”

Now when Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. And when he learned that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to (P)Herod, who himself also was in Jerusalem in those days.

Jesus Before Herod

Now when Herod saw Jesus, he rejoiced greatly; for (Q)he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some [d]sign performed by Him. And he questioned Him [e]at some length, but (R)He answered him nothing. 10 And the chief priests and the scribes were standing there, vehemently accusing Him. 11 And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, (S)dressed Him in a bright robe and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 Now (T)Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for before they had been enemies with each other.

Pilate Grants the Crowd’s Request

13 And Pilate summoned the chief priests and the (U)rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought this man to me as one who [f](V)incites the people to rebellion, and behold, having examined Him before you, I (W)have found in this man no guilt of what you are accusing Him. 15 No, nor has (X)Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him. 16 Therefore I will (Y)punish Him and release Him.” 17 [g][Now he was obliged to release to them at the feast one prisoner.]

18 But they cried out all together, saying, “(Z)Away with this man, and release for us Barabbas!” 19 (He had been thrown into prison for an insurrection made in the city and for murder.) 20 But again Pilate addressed them, wanting to release Jesus, 21 but they kept on calling out, saying, “Crucify, crucify Him!” 22 And he said to them a third time, “Why, what evil has this man done? I have found in Him no guilt worthy of death; therefore I will (AA)punish Him and release Him.” 23 But they were insistent, with loud voices asking that He be crucified. And their voices were prevailing. 24 And Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand be granted. 25 And he released the man they were asking for who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he delivered Jesus to their will.

Simon Carries the Cross

26 (AB)And when they led Him away, they took hold of a man, Simon of (AC)Cyrene, coming in from the country, and placed on him the cross to carry behind Jesus.

27 And following Him was a large multitude of the people, and of women who were [h](AD)mourning and lamenting Him. 28 But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, stop crying for Me, but cry for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘(AE)Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.’ 30 Then they will begin to (AF)say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For if they do these things [i]when the tree is green, what will happen [j]when it is dry?”

32 (AG)Now two others also, who were criminals, were being led away to be put to death with Him.

The Crucifixion

33 (AH)And when they came to the place called [k]The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. 34 [l]But Jesus was saying, (AI)Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” (AJ)And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves. 35 And the people stood by, looking on. And even the (AK)rulers were scoffing at Him, saying, “He saved others; (AL)let Him save Himself if this is the [m]Christ of God, His Chosen One.” 36 And the soldiers also mocked Him, coming up to Him, (AM)offering Him sour wine, 37 and saying, “(AN)If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!” 38 Now there was also an inscription above Him, “(AO)THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

39 (AP)And one of the criminals hanging there was blaspheming Him, saying, “Are You not the [n]Christ? (AQ)Save Yourself and us!” 40 But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving [o]what we deserve for what we have done; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come [p]in Your kingdom!” 43 And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in (AR)Paradise.”

44 (AS)And it was now about [q](AT)the sixth hour, and darkness [r]fell over the whole land until [s]the ninth hour, 45 [t]because the sun was obscured. And (AU)the veil of the [u]sanctuary was torn [v]in two. 46 And Jesus, (AV)crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, (AW)into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Having said this, He breathed His last. 47 (AX)Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began (AY)praising God, saying, “Certainly this man was righteous.” 48 And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, when they observed what had happened, were returning, [w](AZ)beating their chests. 49 (BA)And all His acquaintances and (BB)the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, watching these things.

Jesus Is Buried

50 (BC)And behold, a man named Joseph, who was a (BD)Council member, a good and righteous man 51 (he had not consented to their counsel and action), a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was (BE)waiting for the kingdom of God; 52 this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain. 54 It was [x](BF)Preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to [y]begin. 55 Now (BG)the women, who had come with Him from Galilee, followed and beheld the tomb and how His body was laid.

Jesus Before Pilate

28 (A)Then they *led Jesus from (B)Caiaphas into (C)the [a]Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into (D)the [b]Praetorium so that (E)they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. 29 (F)Therefore Pilate went out to them and *said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30 They answered and said to him, “If this man were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you.” 31 So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” 32 in order that (G)the word of Jesus which He spoke would be fulfilled, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die.

33 Therefore Pilate (H)entered again into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, “(I)Are You the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Are you saying this from yourself, or did others tell you about Me?” 35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You to me; what did You do?” 36 Jesus answered, (J)My kingdom [c]is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be delivered over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not [d]from here.” 37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, (K)You yourself said I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, (L)to bear witness to the truth. (M)Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” 38 Pilate *said to Him, “What is truth?”

And when he had said this, he (N)went out again to the Jews and *said to them, “(O)I find no guilt in Him. 39 (P)But you have a custom that I release someone [e]for you at the Passover; do you wish then that I release [f]for you the King of the Jews?” 40 So they cried out again, saying, “(Q)Not this man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber.

Jesus Flogged and Rejected as King

19 Pilate then took Jesus and [g](R)flogged Him. (S)And when the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and put a purple [h]robe on Him; and they were coming to Him and saying, “(T)Hail, King of the Jews!” and were (U)giving Him slaps in the face. And Pilate (V)came out again and *said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that (W)I find no guilt in Him.” Jesus then came out, (X)wearing the crown of thorns and the purple [i]robe. Pilate *said to them, “Behold, the man!” So when the chief priests and the (Y)officers saw Him, they cried out saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate *said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for (Z)I find no guilt in Him.” The Jews answered him, “(AA)We have a law, and by that law He ought to die because He (AB)made Himself out to be the Son of God.”

Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he became more afraid; and he (AC)entered into the [j]Praetorium again and *said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But (AD)Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate *said to Him, “You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?” 11 Jesus answered, (AE)You would have no authority [k]over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason (AF)he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.” 12 As a result of this Pilate kept seeking to release Him, but the Jews cried out saying, “(AG)If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself to be a king [l]opposes Caesar.”

13 Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and (AH)sat down on the judgment seat at a place called [m]The Stone Pavement, but (AI)in [n]Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now it was (AJ)the day of [o]Preparation for the Passover; it was about the [p](AK)sixth hour. And he *said to the Jews, “Behold, (AL)your King!” 15 So they cried out, “(AM)Away with Him! Away with Him! Crucify Him!” Pilate *said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”

The Crucifixion

16 So he then (AN)delivered Him over to them to be crucified.

17 (AO)They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, [q](AP)bearing His own cross, to the place called (AQ)the Place of a Skull, which is called (AR)in [r]Hebrew, Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Him, and with Him (AS)two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between. 19 And Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “(AT)JESUS THE NAZARENE, (AU)THE KING OF THE JEWS.” 20 Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written (AV)in [s]Hebrew, Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘(AW)The King of the Jews;’ but that He said, ‘I am (AX)King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, “(AY)What I have written I have written.”

23 Then (AZ)the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made (BA)four parts, a part to each soldier and also His [t]tunic; now that tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. 24 So they said to one another, “(BB)Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be;” (BC)this was in order that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “They (BD)divided My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast [u]lots.” 25 Therefore the soldiers did these things.

(BE)But standing by the cross of Jesus were (BF)His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and (BG)Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus then saw His mother, and (BH)the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He *said to His mother, (BI)Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then He *said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into (BJ)his home.

Scripture Fulfilled—It Is Finished

28 After this, Jesus, (BK)knowing that all things had already been finished, (BL)in order [v]to finish the Scripture, *said, (BM)I am thirsty.” 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so (BN)they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. 30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, (BO)It is finished!” And bowing His head, He (BP)gave up His spirit.

31 Then the Jews, because it was (BQ)the day of Preparation, so that (BR)the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath ([w]for that Sabbath was a (BS)high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was (BT)crucified with Him; 33 but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (BU)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has (BV)borne witness, and his witness is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. 36 For these things came to pass (BW)in order that the Scripture would be fulfilled, “(BX)Not a bone of Him shall be [x]broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “(BY)They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”

Jesus Is Buried

38 (BZ)Now after these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but (CA)secretly because of his (CB)fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. 39 (CC)And Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, (CD)bringing a [y]mixture of (CE)myrrh and aloes, weighing about [z]one (CF)hundred litras. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and (CG)bound it in (CH)linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a (CI)new tomb (CJ)in which no one had yet been laid. 42 Therefore because of the Jewish day of (CK)Preparation, since the tomb was (CL)nearby, they laid Jesus there.
