犹大的下场
27 到了清晨，众祭司长和民间的长老商定要处死耶稣。 2 他们把祂绑起来，押送到总督彼拉多那里。
3 出卖耶稣的犹大看见耶稣被定了罪，感到很后悔，就把那三十块银子还给祭司长和长老，说： 4 “我出卖了清白无辜的人，我犯罪了！”
他们说：“那是你自己的事，跟我们有什么关系？”
5 犹大把钱扔在圣殿里，出去上吊自尽了。
6 祭司长们捡起银子，说：“这是血钱，不可收进圣殿的库房。” 7 他们商议，决定用这些钱买下陶匠的地作为埋葬异乡人的坟场。 8 那块地至今被称为“血田”。 9 这就应验了耶利米先知的话：“他们用以色列人给祂估定的三十块银子， 10 买了陶匠的一块田，正如主指示我的。”
耶稣在彼拉多面前受审
11 耶稣站在总督面前受审。总督问：“你是犹太人的王吗？”
耶稣说：“如你所言。”
12 当祭司长和长老控告祂时，祂一句话也不说。 13 彼拉多就问：“你没听见他们对你的诸多控告吗？” 14 耶稣仍然一言不发，彼拉多感到十分惊奇。
15 每逢逾越节，总督会照惯例按民众的选择释放一个犯人。 16 那时，有一个恶名昭彰的囚犯名叫巴拉巴。 17 百姓聚在一起的时候，彼拉多就问他们：“你们要我给你们释放谁？巴拉巴还是被称为基督的耶稣？” 18 因为彼拉多知道他们把耶稣抓来是因为嫉妒。
19 彼拉多正坐堂断案时，他夫人派人来对他说：“你不要插手这个义人的事！我今天在梦中因为这个人受了许多苦。”
20 祭司长和长老却怂恿百姓要求释放巴拉巴，处死耶稣。 21 总督再次问百姓：“这两个人，你们要我释放哪一个？”他们说：“巴拉巴！”
22 彼拉多问：“那么，我怎样处置那个被称为基督的耶稣呢？”
他们齐声说：“把祂钉在十字架上！”
23 彼拉多问：“为什么？祂犯了什么罪？”
他们却更大声地喊叫：“把祂钉在十字架上！”
24 彼拉多见再说也无济于事，反而会引起骚乱，于是拿了一盆水来，在众人面前洗手，说：“流这义人的血，罪不在我，你们自己负责。”
25 众人都说：“流祂血的责任由我们和我们的子孙承担！”
26 于是，彼拉多为他们释放了巴拉巴，下令将耶稣鞭打后，带出去钉十字架。
耶稣受辱
27 士兵把耶稣押进总督府，叫全营的士兵都聚集在祂周围。 28 他们剥下耶稣的衣服，替祂披上一件朱红色的长袍， 29 用荆棘编成冠冕，戴在祂头上，又拿一根苇秆放在祂右手里，跪在祂跟前戏弄祂，说：“犹太人的王万岁！” 30 然后向祂吐唾沫，拿过苇秆打祂的头。 31 他们戏弄完了，就脱去祂的袍子，给祂穿上原来的衣服，把祂押出去钉十字架。
钉十字架
32 路上，他们遇见一个叫西门的古利奈人，就强迫他背耶稣的十字架。
33 来到一个地方，名叫各各他——意思是“髑髅地”， 34 士兵给耶稣喝掺了苦胆汁的酒，祂尝了一口，不肯喝。
35 他们把耶稣钉在十字架上，还抽签分了祂的衣服， 36 然后坐在那里看守。 37 他们在祂头顶上挂了一个牌子，上面写着祂的罪状：“这是犹太人的王耶稣”。 38 有两个强盗也被钉在十字架上，一个在祂右边，一个在祂左边。 39 过路的人都嘲笑祂，摇着头说： 40 “你这声称把圣殿拆毁又在三天内重建的人啊，救救自己吧！你要是上帝的儿子，就从十字架上下来吧！”
41 祭司长、律法教师和长老也嘲讽说： 42 “祂救了别人，却救不了自己！祂要是以色列的王，就从十字架上跳下来吧！我们就信祂。 43 祂说信靠上帝，如果上帝喜悦祂，就让上帝来救祂吧！因为祂自称是上帝的儿子。” 44 甚至跟祂一同被钉十字架的强盗也这样嘲笑祂。
耶稣之死
45 从正午一直到下午三点，黑暗笼罩着整个大地。 46 大约下午三点，耶稣大声呼喊：“以利，以利，拉马撒巴各大尼？”意思是：“我的上帝，我的上帝，你为什么离弃我？”
47 有些站在旁边的人听见了，就说：“这人在呼叫以利亚呢。” 48 其中一人连忙跑去拿了一块海绵，蘸满酸酒，绑在苇秆上送给祂喝。 49 其他人却说：“等一下！我们看看以利亚会不会来救祂。”
50 耶稣又大喊了一声，就断了气。
51 就在那时，圣殿里的幔子从上到下裂成两半，大地震动，岩石崩裂， 52 坟墓打开，很多死去的圣徒复活过来。 53 他们在耶稣复活后离开坟墓，进圣城向许多人显现。
54 看守耶稣的百夫长和士兵看见地震及所发生的一切，都很害怕，说：“这人真是上帝的儿子啊！” 55 有好些妇女在远处观看，她们从加利利就跟随了耶稣，服侍祂。 56 其中有抹大拉的玛丽亚、雅各和约西的母亲玛丽亚以及西庇太两个儿子的母亲。
封石守墓
57 傍晚，从亚利马太来了一位名叫约瑟的富人，他是耶稣的门徒。 58 他去求见彼拉多，要求领取耶稣的遗体，彼拉多就下令把耶稣的遗体交给他。 59 约瑟领了遗体，用干净的细麻布裹好， 60 安放在他为自己在岩壁上凿出的新墓穴里，并滚来一块大石头封闭墓穴的入口，然后离去。 61 那时，抹大拉的玛丽亚和另一个玛丽亚坐在坟墓的对面。
62 第二天，就是预备日之后的那天，祭司长和法利赛人一起来见彼拉多，说： 63 “总督大人，我们记得那个骗子生前曾说，‘三天之后，我必复活。’ 64 所以请你命人看守坟墓三天，以防祂的门徒偷走祂的尸体，然后对百姓说祂已经从死里复活。这样的迷惑会比以前的更厉害！”
65 彼拉多说：“你们带上卫兵，去那里严加看守。”
66 他们就带着卫兵去了，在墓口的石头上贴上封条，派人看守墓穴。

ରାଜ୍ୟପାଳ ପୀଲାତଙ୍କ ଆଗରେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ହାଜର କରାଗଲା
(ମାର୍କ 15:1; ଲୂକ 23:1-2; ଯୋହନ 18:28-32)
27 ତା’ ପରଦିନ ଅତି ସକାଳୁ ସମସ୍ତ ପ୍ରଧାନଯାଜକ ଓ ପ୍ରାଚୀନ ନେତାମାନେ ଏକାଠି ହେଲେ, ଓ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ବଧ କରିବା ପାଇଁ ଯୋଜନା କଲେ। 2 ସେମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ବାନ୍ଧି ପକାଇଲେ। ତା'ପରେ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ରାଜ୍ୟପାଳ ପୀଲାତଙ୍କ ପାଖକୁ ନେଇଗଲେ, ଓ ତାହାଙ୍କ ହାତରେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ଦେଇଦେଲେ।
ଯିହୂଦାଙ୍କ ଆତ୍ମହତ୍ୟା
(ପ୍ରେରିତ 1:18-19)
3 ଯିହୂଦା ଦେଖିଲା ଯେ, ସେମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ବଧ କରିବା ପାଇଁ ସ୍ଥିର କରିଛନ୍ତି। ଯିହୂଦାହିଁ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ତାହାଙ୍କର ଶତ୍ରୁମାନଙ୍କ ହାତରେ ଦେଇ ଦେଇଥିଲା। ତେଣୁ ସେ ଏସବୁ ଘଟଣା ଦେଖି ନିଜର କର୍ମ ପାଇଁ ବହୁତ ଦୁଃଖ କଲା। ସେ ପ୍ରଧାନଯାଜକ ଓ ପ୍ରାଚୀନ ନେତାମାନଙ୍କୁ ସେହି ତିରିଶ୍ଟି ରୌପ୍ୟମୁଦ୍ରା ଫେରାଇଦେଲୋ। 4 ସେ କହିଲା, “ମୁଁ ପାପ କରିଛି। ମୁଁ ଜଣେ ନିରପରାଧ ଲୋକକୁ ମାରି ଦେବା ପାଇଁ ତୁମ୍ଭ ହାତରେ ଧରେଇ ଦେଇଛି।”
ଯିହୂଦୀ ନେତାମାନେ କହିଲେ, “ଏଥିରେ ଆମ୍ଭର କିଛି ଯାଏ ଆସେ ନାହିଁ। ତୁମ୍ଭ କଥା ତୁମ୍ଭେ ବୁଝ।”
5 “ଯିହୂଦା ମନ୍ଦିର ଭିତରେ ସେହି ରୂପାଟଙ୍କାତକ ଫିଙ୍ଗିଦେଲା। ତା'ପରେ ସେହି ଜାଗା ଛାଡ଼ି ଯିହୂଦା ଗ୍ଭଲିଗଲା ଓ ନିଜକୁ ଫାଶି ଦେଲା।
6 ପ୍ରଧାନଯାଜକମାନେ ମନ୍ଦିର ଭିତରେ ସେହି ରୂପାଟଙ୍କାତକ ଗୋଟାଇ ନେଲେ। ସେମାନେ କହିଲେ, “ମନ୍ଦିର ଟଙ୍କା ସହିତ ଏ ଟଙ୍କାତକ ରଖିବା ନିୟମ ବିରୁଦ୍ଧ ହେବ। କାରଣ ଏ ଟଙ୍କା ଜଣକର ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ପାଇଁ ଦିଆଯାଇଛି।” 7 ବାହାରୁ ଯିରୁଶାଲମକୁ ଭ୍ରମଣରେ ଆସୁଥିବା ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କ ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ହେଲେ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ସମାଧି ଦେବା ନିମନ୍ତେ ସେମାନେ ଏ ଟଙ୍କାରେ ‘କୁମ୍ଭାର ଜମି’ ନାମରେ ନାମିତ ଜମି ଖଣ୍ଡିଏ କିଣିବାକୁ ସ୍ଥିର କଲେ। 8 ତେଣୁ ଏବେ ସୁଦ୍ଧା ଏହି ଜମିଟିକୁ ରକ୍ତକ୍ଷେତ୍ର ବୋଲି କୁହାଯାଉଛି। 9 ଏଭଳି ଭାବରେ ଭବିଷ୍ୟଦ୍ବକ୍ତା ଯିରିମିୟଙ୍କ ମାଧ୍ୟମରେ କୁହାଯାଇଥିବା ବାଣୀ ସଫଳ ହେଲା। ଯିରିମିୟ କହିଥିଲେ,
“ସେମାନେ ତିରିଶ୍ଟି ରୂପାଟଙ୍କା ନେଲେ। ସେତିକି ଟଙ୍କା ଇସ୍ରାଏଲର ଲୋକେ ତାହାଙ୍କର ଜୀବନର ମୂଲ୍ୟସ୍ୱରୂପ ଦେବାକୁ ସ୍ଥିର କରିଥିଲେ। 10 ପ୍ରଭୁ ମୋତେ ଦେଇଥିବା ଆଦେଶ ଅନୁସାରେ ସେମାନେ ସେହି ଟଙ୍କାରେ କୁମ୍ଭାର ଜମି ଖଣ୍ଡିକ କିଣିଲେ।”[a]
ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ପୀଲାତଙ୍କର ପ୍ରଶ୍ନ
(ମାର୍କ 15:2-5; ଲୂକ 23:3-5; ଯୋହନ 18:33-38)
11 ଏହି ସମୟରେ ଯୀଶୁ ରାଜ୍ୟପାଳ ପୀଲାତ ଆଗରେ ଠିଆ ହେଲେ। ରାଜ୍ୟପାଳ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ପଗ୍ଭରିଲେ, “ତୁମ୍ଭେ କ’ଣ ଯିହୂଦୀମାନଙ୍କର ରାଜା?”
ଯୀଶୁ ଉତ୍ତର ଦେଲେ, “ହଁ।”
12 କିନ୍ତୁ ଯେତେବେଳେ ପ୍ରଧାନଯାଜକ ଓ ପ୍ରାଚୀନ ନେତାମାନେ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ଅଭିଯୁକ୍ତ କଲେ ସେ କିଛି ଉତ୍ତର ଦେଲେ ନାହିଁ।
13 ତେଣୁ ପୀଲାତ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ପଗ୍ଭରିଲେ, “ସେମାନେ ତୁମ୍ଭ ବିରୁଦ୍ଧରେ ଯେଉଁସବୁ ଅଭିଯୋଗ କରୁଛନ୍ତି ତାହା ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଶୁଣିଛ। କାହିଁକି ଉତ୍ତର ଦେଉ ନାହଁ?”
14 କିନ୍ତୁ ଯୀଶୁ ଗୋଟିଏ ହେଲେ ଉତ୍ତର ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ଦେବାକୁ ମନାକଲେ। ଏଥିରେ ପୀଲାତ ବଡ଼ ଆଶ୍ଚର୍ଯ୍ୟ ହୋଇଗଲେ।
ପୀଲାତ ଚେଷ୍ଟା କରିବା ସତ୍ତ୍ୱେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ମୁକ୍ତ କରିବାରେ ଅସଫଳ ହେଲେ

15 ପ୍ରତ୍ୟେକ ବର୍ଷ ନିସ୍ତାରପର୍ବ ଅବସରରେ ରାଜ୍ୟପାଳ କାରାଗାରରୁ ଜଣେ ବନ୍ଦୀକୁ ମୁକ୍ତ କରିବାର ରୀତି ଥିଲା। ଲୋକମାନେ ଯେଉଁ ଲୋକକୁ ମୁକ୍ତ କରିବାକୁ ଗ୍ଭହୁଁଥିଲେ, କେବଳ ସେହି ଲୋକକୁ ମୁକ୍ତ କରାଯାଉଥିଲା। 16 ସେହି ସମୟରେ ବାରବ୍ବା[b] ନାମରେ ଜଣେ କୁଖ୍ୟାତ ବନ୍ଦୀ ଥିଲା।
17 ତେଣୁ ଯେତେବେଳେ ସବୁଲୋକେ ଏକାଠି ଜମା ହେଲେ, ସେତେବେଳେ ପୀଲାତ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ପଗ୍ଭରିଲେ, “ମୁଁ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ ଜଣେ ଲୋକକୁ ମୁକ୍ତ କରିବି। ବାରବ୍ବା ଓ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ମଧ୍ୟରୁ କାହାକୁ ମୁକ୍ତ କରିବାକୁ ଗ୍ଭହୁଁଛ?” 18 ପୀଲାତ ଜାଣିଥିଲେ ଯେ ଲୋକମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ପ୍ରତି ଈର୍ଷାପରାୟଣ ଥିଲେ। ସେଥିପାଇଁ ତାହାଙ୍କ ହାତରେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ସମର୍ପି ଦେଇଛନ୍ତି।
19 ପୀଲାତ ବିଗ୍ଭରମଞ୍ଚରେ ବସିଥିବା ସମୟରେ ତାହାଙ୍କ ସ୍ତ୍ରୀ ତାହାଙ୍କ ପାଖକୁ ଗୋଟିଏ ଖବର ପଠାଇଲେ। ଖବରଟି ଥିଲା: “ଏହି ଧାର୍ମିକ ଲୋକଟିର କିଛି ହେଲେ କ୍ଷତି କର ନାହିଁ। ମୁଁ ତାହାଙ୍କ ବିଷୟରେ କାଲି ରାତିରେ ଗୋଟିଏ ସ୍ୱପ୍ନ ଦେଖିଛି, ସେଥି ଯୋଗୁଁ ମୁଁ ଅଧିକ ଚିନ୍ତାଗ୍ରସ୍ତ ହୋଇପଡ଼ିଛି।”
20 କିନ୍ତୁ ପ୍ରଧାନଯାଜକ ଓ ପ୍ରାଚୀନ ନେତାମାନେ ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ ପ୍ରବର୍ତ୍ତାଇଲେ ଯେ, ସେମାନେ ବାରବ୍ବାଙ୍କୁ ମୁକ୍ତ କରିବା ପାଇଁ ଓ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ମାରିଦେବା ପାଇଁ ଅନୁରୋଧ କରନ୍ତୁ।
21 ରାଜ୍ୟପାଳ ପୀଲାତ ପଗ୍ଭରିଲେ, “ବାରବ୍ବା ଓ ଯୀଶୁ ଏହି ଦୁଇଜଣ ବନ୍ଦୀଙ୍କ ମଧ୍ୟରୁ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ କାହାକୁ ମୁକ୍ତ କରିଦେବା ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ ଗ୍ଭହୁଁଛ?”
ସେମାନେ କହିଲେ, “ବାରବ୍ବା।”
22 ତା'ପରେ ପୀଲାତ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ପଗ୍ଭରିଲେ, “ତେବେ ଯେଉଁ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟ କୁହାଯାଏ ତାହାଙ୍କ ପ୍ରତି ମୁଁ କ’ଣ କରିବି?”
ସମସ୍ତେ କହିଲେ, “ତାହାଙ୍କୁ କ୍ରୁଶରେ ଚଢ଼ାଇ ଦିଆଯାଉ।”
23 ପୀଲାତ ପଗ୍ଭରିଲେ, “କାହିଁକି? ସେ କ’ଣ ଅପରାଧ କରିଛନ୍ତି?”
କିନ୍ତୁ ସମସ୍ତେ ଚିତ୍କାର କରି କହିଲେ, “ତାହାଙ୍କୁ କ୍ରୁଶରେ ଚଢ଼ାଇ ଦିଆଯାଉ।”
24 ପୀଲାତ ଦେଖିଲେ ଯେ, ସେ ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କ ମତ ବଦଳେଇବାକୁ କିଛି କରି ପାରିବେ ନାହିଁ ବରଂ ଲୋକେ ବେଳକୁ ବେଳ ଉତ୍ତେଜିତ ହୋଇ ଉଠୁଛନ୍ତି। ପୀଲାତ କିଛି ପାଣି ନେଲେ ଓ ସମସ୍ତେ ଦେଖି ପାରିବା ଭଳି ତାହାଙ୍କର ଦୁଇହାତ ଧୋଇଲେ। ସେ କହିଲେ, “ଏ ଲୋକର ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ପାଇଁ ମୁଁ ଦାୟୀ ନୁହେଁ। ତୁମ୍ଭେମାନେ କେବଳ ଏସବୁ କରୁଛ।”
25 ସବୁ ଲୋକ ଉତ୍ତର ଦେଲେ, “ଆମ୍ଭେ ତାହାଙ୍କ ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ପାଇଁ ଦାୟୀ ରହିବୁ। ତାହାଙ୍କ ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ପାଇଁ ଯେକୌଣସି ଦଣ୍ଡ ପାଇବାକୁ ଯୋଗ୍ୟ, ଆମ୍ଭ ନିଜ ପାଇଁ ଓ ଆମ୍ଭ ପିଲାମାନଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ ସେଥିରେ ରାଜି ଅଛୁ।”
26 ପୀଲାତ ବାରବ୍ବାଙ୍କୁ ମୁକ୍ତ କରିଦେଲେ ଓ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ବେତରେ ମାରିବା ପାଇଁ ଆଦେଶ ଦେଲେ। ତା'ପରେ ସେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ କ୍ରୁଶରେ ଚଢ଼ାଇବା ପାଇଁ ସୈନ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କ ହାତରେ ଅର୍ପଣ କଲେ।
ପୀଲାତଙ୍କ ସୈନ୍ୟମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ଥଟ୍ଟା କଲେ
(ମାର୍କ 15:16-20; ଯୋହନ 19:2-3)
27 ତା'ପରେ ପୀଲାତଙ୍କ ସୈନ୍ୟମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ପୀଲାତଙ୍କ ରାଜପ୍ରାସାଦ ଭିତରକୁ ନେଇଗଲେ। ସବୁ ସୈନ୍ୟମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ଗ୍ଭରିପଟେ ଜମା ହୋଇଗଲେ। 28 ସୈନ୍ୟମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ପୋଷାକ କାଢ଼ି ପକାଇଲେ ଓ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ବାଇଗଣୀ ପୋଷାକଟି ପିନ୍ଧାଇ ଦେଲେ। 29 ସେମାନେ କଣ୍ଟା ଡାଳରେ ଗୋଟିଏ ମୁକୁଟ ତିଆରି କଲେ ଓ ସେହି କଣ୍ଟା ମୁକୁଟ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ମୁଣ୍ଡରେ ପିନ୍ଧାଇ ଦେଲେ। ତାହାଙ୍କର ଡାହାଣ ହାତରେ ବାଡ଼ିଟି ଧରେଇ ଦେଲେ। ତା'ପରେ ତାହାଙ୍କ ଆଗରେ ଆଣ୍ଠୁମାଡ଼ି ବସିପଡ଼ି ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ଥଟ୍ଟା କଲେ। ସେମାନେ କହିଲେ, “ହେ ଯିହୂଦୀମାନଙ୍କର ରାଜା! ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଦୀର୍ଘଜୀବୀ ହୁଅ।” 30 ତା'ପରେ ସେମାନେ ତାହାଙ୍କ ମୁହଁ ଉପରକୁ ଛେପ ପକାଇଲେ ଓ ତାହାଙ୍କ ହାତରୁ ବାଡ଼ିଟି ନେଇ ସେଥିରେ ତାହାଙ୍କର ମୁଣ୍ଡକୁ ପିଟିବାକୁ ଲାଗିଲେ। 31 ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ଥଟ୍ଟା କରି ସାରିବା ପରେ ତାହାଙ୍କ ପୋଷାକ କାଢ଼ି ନେଲେ ଓ ପୁଣି ତାହାଙ୍କର ନିଜ ବସ୍ତ୍ର ପିନ୍ଧାଇ କ୍ରୁଶରେ ଚଢ଼ାଇବା ପାଇଁ ନେଇଗଲେ।
ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ କ୍ରୁଶରେ ହତ୍ୟା କରାଗଲା

32 ସୈନ୍ୟମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ନେଇ ନଗର ବାହାରକୁ ଯାଉଥିବା ସମୟରେ କୂରୀଣୀୟ ଶିମୋନ ନାମରେ ଜଣେ ଲୋକକୁ ଦେଖିଲେ। ସେମାନେ ସେ ଲୋକଟିକୁ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ କ୍ରୁଶ ବୋହି ନେବା ପାଇଁ ବାଧ୍ୟ କଲେ। 33 ସେମାନେ ଗଲ୍ଗଥା ନାମକ ସ୍ଥାନରେ (‘‘ଯାହାର ଅର୍ଥ କପାଳସ୍ଥାନ’’) ପହଞ୍ଚିଲେ। 34 ସେମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ପିତ୍ତ ମିଶା ଦ୍ରାକ୍ଷାରସ ପିଇବାକୁ ଦେଲେ, କିନ୍ତୁ ଯୀଶୁ ତାହାକୁ ଗ୍ଭଖିବା ପରେ ପିଇବା ପାଇଁ ମନାକଲେ।
35 ସେମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ କ୍ରୁଶରେ କଣ୍ଟା ମାରି ସାରି ତାହାଙ୍କର ପୋଷାକ ପତ୍ର ନିଜ ନିଜ ଭିତରେ ଗୁଲିବାଣ୍ଟ କରି ବାଣ୍ଟି ନେଲେ। 36 ତା'ପରେ ସୈନ୍ୟମାନେ ସେଠାରେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ଜଗିବା ପାଇଁ ବସିଲେ। 37 ସୈନ୍ୟମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ବିରୁଦ୍ଧରେ ଅଭିଯୋଗପତ୍ର ତିଆରି କଲେ ଓ ତାହାକୁ ତାହାଙ୍କ ମୁଣ୍ଡ ଉପରେ ଝୁଲାଇ ଦେଲେ। ସେଥିରେ ଲେଖା ଥିଲା, “ଏ ଯିହୂଦୀମାନଙ୍କର ରାଜା ଯୀଶୁ।”
38 ସେହି ସମୟରେ ଦୁଇଜଣ ଡକାୟତଙ୍କୁ ମଧ୍ୟ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ପାଖରେ କ୍ରୁଶରେ ଚଢ଼େଇ ଦିଆଗଲା। ଜଣକୁ ତାହାଙ୍କ ଡାହାଣ ପଟେ ଓ ଆର ଜଣକୁ ବାମ ପଟେ। 39 ସେହି ପାଖଦେଇ ଯାଉଥିବା ଲୋକମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ଅପମାନ ଦେଉଥିଲେ। ସେମାନେ ସେମମାନଙ୍କ ମୁଣ୍ଡ ହଲେଇ କହୁଥିଲେ, 40 “ତୁମ୍ଭେ କହୁଥିଲ ଯେ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ମନ୍ଦିରକୁ ଭାଙ୍ଗି ଦେଇ ପାରିବ ଓ ପୁଣି ତାକୁ ତିନି ଦିନ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ତିଆରି କରିଦେଇ ପାରିବ ତେଣୁ ଏବେ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ନିଜକୁ ରକ୍ଷା କର। ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଯଦି ପ୍ରକୃତରେ ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ପୁତ୍ର ତେବେ କ୍ରୁଶ ଉପରୁ ତଳକୁ ଗ୍ଭଲିଆସ।”
41 ପ୍ରଧାନଯାଜକ, ଧର୍ମଶାସ୍ତ୍ରୀ ଓ ପ୍ରାଚୀନମାନେ ମଧ୍ୟ ସେଠାରେ ଥିଲେ। ସେମାନେ ମଧ୍ୟ ଅନ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କ ଭଳି ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ଥଟ୍ଟା କରୁଥିଲେ। 42 ସେମାନେ କହୁଥିଲେ, “ସେ ଅନ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କୁ ରକ୍ଷା କରୁଥିଲେ, ଏବେ କିନ୍ତୁ ସେ ନିଜକୁ ରକ୍ଷା କରି ପାରୁ ନାହାନ୍ତି। ଲୋକେ କହନ୍ତି ଯେ, ସେ ଇସ୍ରାଏଲର ରାଜା। ଏ କଥା ଯଦି ସତ, ତେବେ ସେ ବର୍ତ୍ତମାନ କ୍ରୁଶ ଉପରୁ ତଳକୁ ଓହ୍ଲେଇ ଆସନ୍ତୁ। ତେବେ ଆମ୍ଭେ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ବିଶ୍ୱାସ କରିବୁ। 43 ସେ ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କଠାରେ ବିଶ୍ୱାସ କରୁଥିଲେ। ଯଦି ପ୍ରକୃତରେ ପରମେଶ୍ୱର ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ଗ୍ଭହୁଁଥା’ନ୍ତି, ତେବେ ସେ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ବର୍ତ୍ତମାନ ରକ୍ଷା କରନ୍ତୁ। ସେ ନିଜେ କହୁଥିଲେ, ‘ମୁଁ ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ପୁତ୍ର।’’’ 44 ଯେଉଁ ଡକାୟତମାନଙ୍କୁ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ପାଖରେ କ୍ରୁଶରେ ଚଢ଼ାଇ ଦିଆଯାଉଥିଲା, ସେମାନେ ମଧ୍ୟ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ସେହିଭଳି ଥଟ୍ଟା କରିବାରେ ଲାଗିଲେ।
ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ମୃତ୍ୟୁ

45 ଦ୍ୱିପ୍ରହରଠାରୁ ତିନିଟା ବାଜିବା ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ସାରା ଦେଶରେ ଅନ୍ଧକାର ଘୋଟିଗଲା। 46 ପ୍ରାୟ ତିନିଟା ବେଳେ ଯୀଶୁ ଉଚ୍ଚ ସ୍ୱରରେ ଡାକିଲେ, “ଏଲି, ଏଲି, ଲାମା ସବକ୍ଥାନୀ?” ଅର୍ଥାତ୍ “ହେ ମୋର ପରମେଶ୍ୱର, ହେ ମୋର ପରମେଶ୍ୱର, ତୁମ୍ଭେ ମୋତେ କାହିଁକି ପରିତ୍ୟାଗ କଲ?”(A)
47 ସେଠାରେ ଠିଆହୋଇଥିବା କେତେକ ଲୋକ ଏ କଥା ଶୁଣିଲେ ଓ କହିଲେ, “ସେ ଏଲିୟଙ୍କୁ ଡାକୁଛି।”
48 ସେହିକ୍ଷଣି ସେହି ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କ ମଧ୍ୟରୁ ଜଣେ ଦୌଡ଼ିଯାଇ ସ୍ପଞ୍ଜ୍ଟିଏ ନେଇ ଆସିଲା। ତାକୁ ଅମ୍ଳରସରେ ବୁଡ଼ାଇ ଗୋଟିଏ ବାଡ଼ିରେ ଟାଙ୍ଗି ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ବଢ଼ାଇ ଦେଲା। 49 କିନ୍ତୁ ଅନ୍ୟମାନେ କହିଲେ, “ରୁହ, ଏଲିୟ ଆସି ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ରକ୍ଷା କରୁଛନ୍ତି କି ନାହିଁ ଏବେ ଦେଖିବା।”
50 ପୁଣି ଥରେ ଯୀଶୁ କହିଲେ ସମାପ୍ତ ହେଲା, ତା'ପରେ ସେ ପ୍ରାଣତ୍ୟାଗ କଲେ।
51 ତା'ପରେ ମନ୍ଦିରର ପରଦା ଉପରୁ ତଳ ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ଚିରିଯାଇ ଦୁଇଖଣ୍ଡ ହୋଇଗଲା। ଭୂମିକମ୍ପ ହେଲା, ଓ ପଥର ମାନ ଫାଟିଗଲା, 52 କବରଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଖୋଲିଗଲା, ଆଗରୁ ମରିଯାଇଥିବା ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କର ଅନେକଗୁଡ଼ିଏ ଲୋକ ମୃତ୍ୟୁରୁ ପୁଣି ଉତ୍ଥାନ ହେଲେ। ସେମାନେ କବର ଭିତରୁ ବାହାରି ଆସିଲେ। 53 ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ମୃତ୍ୟୁରୁ ବଞ୍ଚି ଉଠିବା ପରେ ସେମାନେ ପବିତ୍ରନଗରକୁ ଯାଇ ଅନେକ ଲୋକଙ୍କୁ ଦେଖା ଦେଲେ।
54 ରୋମୀୟ ସେନାଧ୍ୟକ୍ଷ ଓ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ଜଗି ରହିଥିବା ସୈନ୍ୟମାନେ ଭୂମିକମ୍ପ ଓ ଅନ୍ୟସବୁ ଘଟଣାମାନ ଘଟୁଥିବା ଦେଖିଲେ, ସେମାନେ ବହୁତ ଭୟ କଲେ ଓ ସେମାନେ କହିଲେ, “ସେ ପ୍ରକୃତରେ ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ପୁତ୍ର ଥିଲେ।”
55 କିଛି ଦୂରରେ ଅନେକ ସ୍ତ୍ରୀଲୋକ ଏସବୁ ଦେଖୁଥିଲେ। ଏହି ସ୍ତ୍ରୀଲୋକମାନେ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ଯତ୍ନ ନେବା ପାଇଁ ଗାଲିଲୀରୁ ତାହାଙ୍କ ସହିତ ଆସିଥିଲେ। 56 ସେମାନଙ୍କ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ମଗ୍ଦଲିନୀ ମରିୟମ, ଯାକୁବ ଓ ଯୋଷେଫଙ୍କ ମା ମରିୟମ ଓ ଜେବଦୀଙ୍କ ପୁତ୍ରମାନ (ଯାକୁବ ଓ ଯୋହନ) ଙ୍କ ମା ଥିଲେ।
ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ କବର ଦିଆଗଲା

57 ସନ୍ଧ୍ୟା ହେବା ବେଳକୁ ଯୋଷେଫ ନାମକ ହାରାମଥିୟାର ଜଣେ ଧନୀ ଲୋକ ଯିରୁଶାଲମରେ ଆସି ପହଞ୍ଚିଲେ। ସେ ମଧ୍ୟ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କର ଜଣେ ଶିଷ୍ୟ ଥିଲେ। 58 ସେ ପୀଲାତଙ୍କ ପାଖକୁ ଗଲେ ଓ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ଶରୀର ପାଇଁ ଅନୁରୋଧ କଲେ। ପୀଲାତ ସୈନ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କୁ ଆଜ୍ଞା ଦେଇ କହିଲେ ଶରୀରକୁ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ଦେଇଦିଅ। 59 ଯୋଷେଫ ଶରୀରକୁ ନେଲେ ଓ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ନୂଆ ରେଶମ ବସ୍ତ୍ର ଦ୍ୱାରା ଘୋଡ଼େଇ ଦେଲେ। 60 ଯୋଷେଫ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ଶରୀରକୁ ତାହାଙ୍କ ନୂଆ କବର ମଧ୍ୟରେ ରଖିଲେ। ସେହି କବରକୁ ଯୋଷେଫ ପଥରର କାନ୍ଥ କାଟି ତିଆରି କରିଥିଲେ। ତା'ପରେ ସେ ଗୋଟିଏ ବହୁତ ବଡ଼ ପଥର ଗଡ଼େଇ ଆଣି ପ୍ରବେଶଦ୍ୱାରକୁ ବନ୍ଦ କରିଦେଲେ। ଏସବୁ କଲାପରେ ଯୋଷେଫ ଗ୍ଭଲିଗଲେ। 61 ମଗ୍ଦଲିନୀ ମରିୟମ ଓ ମରିୟମ ନାମକ ଅନ୍ୟ ସ୍ତ୍ରୀଲୋକ ଜଣକ ସେଠାରେ କବର ଆଗରେ ବସି ରହିଥିଲେ।
ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ କବର ପାଖରେ ପହରା
62 ସେହି ଦିନଟି ପ୍ରସ୍ତୁତି ଦିବସ ଥିଲା, ସେହି ଶୁକ୍ରବାରର ପରଦିନ ପ୍ରମୁଖ ଯାଜକ ଓ ଫାରୂଶୀମାନେ ପୀଲାତଙ୍କୁ ଭେଟିଲେ। 63 ସେମାନେ କହିଲେ, “ମହାଶୟ, ଆମ୍ଭର ମନେ ଅଛି ଯେ ସେହି ପ୍ରତାରକ ସେ ବଞ୍ଚିଥିବା ବେଳେ କହିଥିଲା, ‘ତୃତୀୟ ଦିନ ପରେ ମୁଁ ମୃତ୍ୟୁରୁ ପୁଣି ପୁନରୁତ୍ଥିତ ହେବି।’ 64 ତେଣୁ ତୃତୀୟ ଦିନ ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ କବରକୁ ପହରା ଦେବା ପାଇଁ ଆପଣ ଆଦେଶ ଦିଅନ୍ତୁ। ତାହାଙ୍କର ଶିଷ୍ୟମାନେ ସେଠାକୁ ଆସି ତାହାଙ୍କ ମୃତଦେହକୁ ଗ୍ଭେରି କରି ନେବା ପାଇଁ ଚେଷ୍ଟା କରିବେ। ତା'ପରେ ସେମାନେ ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ କହିବେ ଯେ ସେ ମୃତ୍ୟୁରୁ ଉଠିଛନ୍ତି। ତାହାହେଲେ ଏହି ଶେଷ ପ୍ରତାରଣା ଆଗ ପ୍ରତାରଣା ଅପେକ୍ଷା ଅଧିକ ଖରାପ ହେବ।”
65 ପୀଲାତ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ କହିଲେ, “ତୁମ୍ଭେ ପହରା ପାଇଁ ସୈନ୍ୟ ନେଇ ଯାଇପାର। ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଯେଭଳି ଭଲ ଭାବୁଛ, ଯାଅ ଓ ସେହିପରି କବରସ୍ଥାନକୁ ପହରା ଦେଇ ନିରାପଦରେ ରଖ।” 66 ତା'ପରେ ସେମାନେ କବର ପାଖକୁ ଗଲେ ଓ ପ୍ରବେଶଦ୍ୱାରରେ ମୋହର ଲଗେଇଲେ। ସେଠାରେ ସୈନ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କୁ ପହରା ଦେବା ପାଇଁ ଆଦେଶ ଦେଇ ଗ୍ଭେରମାନଙ୍କ କବଳରୁ କବରକୁ ନିରାପଦ ରଖିବାର ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥା କଲେ।

Thirty Silver Coins
27 1-2 In the first light of dawn, all the high priests and religious leaders met and put the finishing touches on their plot to kill Jesus. Then they tied him up and paraded him to Pilate, the governor.
3-4 Judas, the one who betrayed him, realized that Jesus was doomed. Overcome with remorse, he gave back the thirty silver coins to the high priests, saying, “I’ve sinned. I’ve betrayed an innocent man.”
They said, “What do we care? That’s your problem!”
5 Judas threw the silver coins into the Temple and left. Then he went out and hung himself.
6-10 The high priests picked up the silver pieces, but then didn’t know what to do with them. “It wouldn’t be right to give this—a payment for murder!—as an offering in the Temple.” They decided to get rid of it by buying the “Potter’s Field” and use it as a burial place for the homeless. That’s how the field got called “Murder Meadow,” a name that has stuck to this day. Then Jeremiah’s words became history:
They took the thirty silver pieces,
The price of the one priced by some sons of Israel,
And they purchased the potter’s field.
And so they unwittingly followed the divine instructions to the letter.
Pilate
11 Jesus was placed before the governor, who questioned him: “Are you the ‘King of the Jews’?”
Jesus said, “If you say so.”
12-14 But when the accusations rained down hot and heavy from the high priests and religious leaders, he said nothing. Pilate asked him, “Do you hear that long list of accusations? Aren’t you going to say something?” Jesus kept silence—not a word from his mouth. The governor was impressed, really impressed.
15-18 It was an old custom during the Feast for the governor to pardon a single prisoner named by the crowd. At the time, they had the infamous Jesus Barabbas in prison. With the crowd before him, Pilate said, “Which prisoner do you want me to pardon: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus the so-called Christ?” He knew it was through sheer spite that they had turned Jesus over to him.
19 While court was still in session, Pilate’s wife sent him a message: “Don’t get mixed up in judging this noble man. I’ve just been through a long and troubled night because of a dream about him.”
20 Meanwhile, the high priests and religious leaders had talked the crowd into asking for the pardon of Barabbas and the execution of Jesus.
21 The governor asked, “Which of the two do you want me to pardon?”
They said, “Barabbas!”
22 “Then what do I do with Jesus, the so-called Christ?”
They all shouted, “Nail him to a cross!”
23 He objected, “But for what crime?”
But they yelled all the louder, “Nail him to a cross!”
24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere and that a riot was imminent, he took a basin of water and washed his hands in full sight of the crowd, saying, “I’m washing my hands of responsibility for this man’s death. From now on, it’s in your hands. You’re judge and jury.”
25 The crowd answered, “We’ll take the blame, we and our children after us.”
26 Then he pardoned Barabbas. But he had Jesus whipped, and then handed over for crucifixion.
The Crucifixion
27-31 The soldiers assigned to the governor took Jesus into the governor’s palace and got the entire brigade together for some fun. They stripped him and dressed him in a red robe. They plaited a crown from branches of a thornbush and set it on his head. They put a stick in his right hand for a scepter. Then they knelt before him in mocking reverence: “Bravo, King of the Jews!” they said. “Bravo!” Then they spit on him and hit him on the head with the stick. When they had had their fun, they took off the robe and put his own clothes back on him. Then they proceeded out to the crucifixion.
32-34 Along the way they came on a man from Cyrene named Simon and made him carry Jesus’ cross. Arriving at Golgotha, the place they call “Skull Hill,” they offered him a mild painkiller (a mixture of wine and myrrh), but when he tasted it he wouldn’t drink it.
35-40 After they had finished nailing him to the cross and were waiting for him to die, they killed time by throwing dice for his clothes. Above his head they had posted the criminal charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews. Along with him, they also crucified two criminals, one to his right, the other to his left. People passing along the road jeered, shaking their heads in mock lament: “You bragged that you could tear down the Temple and then rebuild it in three days—so show us your stuff! Save yourself! If you’re really God’s Son, come down from that cross!”
41-44 The high priests, along with the religion scholars and leaders, were right there mixing it up with the rest of them, having a great time poking fun at him: “He saved others—he can’t save himself! King of Israel, is he? Then let him get down from that cross. We’ll all become believers then! He was so sure of God—well, let him rescue his ‘Son’ now—if he wants him! He did claim to be God’s Son, didn’t he?” Even the two criminals crucified next to him joined in the mockery.
45-46 From noon to three, the whole earth was dark. Around mid-afternoon Jesus groaned out of the depths, crying loudly, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”
47-49 Some bystanders who heard him said, “He’s calling for Elijah.” One of them ran and got a sponge soaked in sour wine and lifted it on a stick so he could drink. The others joked, “Don’t be in such a hurry. Let’s see if Elijah comes and saves him.”
50 But Jesus, again crying out loudly, breathed his last.
51-53 At that moment, the Temple curtain was ripped in two, top to bottom. There was an earthquake, and rocks were split in pieces. What’s more, tombs were opened up, and many bodies of believers asleep in their graves were raised. (After Jesus’ resurrection, they left the tombs, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.)
54 The captain of the guard and those with him, when they saw the earthquake and everything else that was happening, were scared to death. They said, “This has to be the Son of God!”
55-56 There were also quite a few women watching from a distance, women who had followed Jesus from Galilee in order to serve him. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the Zebedee brothers.
The Tomb
57-61 Late in the afternoon a wealthy man from Arimathea, a disciple of Jesus, arrived. His name was Joseph. He went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Pilate granted his request. Joseph took the body and wrapped it in clean linens, put it in his own tomb, a new tomb only recently cut into the rock, and rolled a large stone across the entrance. Then he went off. But Mary Magdalene and the other Mary stayed, sitting in plain view of the tomb.
62-64 After sundown, the high priests and Pharisees arranged a meeting with Pilate. They said, “Sir, we just remembered that that liar announced while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will be raised.’ We’ve got to get that tomb sealed until the third day. There’s a good chance his disciples will come and steal the corpse and then go around saying, ‘He’s risen from the dead.’ Then we’ll be worse off than before, the final deceit surpassing the first.”
65-66 Pilate told them, “You will have a guard. Go ahead and secure it the best you can.” So they went out and secured the tomb, sealing the stone and posting guards.

3 When Judas, who had betrayed him,(D) saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver(E) to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”
“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”(F)
5 So Judas threw the money into the temple(G) and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.(H)
6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood(I) to this day. 9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:(J) “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”[a](K)

12 When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.(N) 13 Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”(O) 14 But Jesus made no reply,(P) not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.
15 Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner(Q) chosen by the crowd. 16 At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus[b] Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(R) 18 For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat,(S) his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent(T) man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream(U) because of him.”
20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.(V)
21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.
“Barabbas,” they answered.
22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(W) Pilate asked.
They all answered, “Crucify him!”
23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar(X) was starting, he took water and washed his hands(Y) in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,”(Z) he said. “It is your responsibility!”(AA)
25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”(AB)
26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged,(AC) and handed him over to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(AD)
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium(AE) and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,(AF) 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.(AG) 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.(AH) 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.(AI)
The Crucifixion of Jesus(AJ)
32 As they were going out,(AK) they met a man from Cyrene,(AL) named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.(AM) 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).(AN) 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;(AO) but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(AP) 36 And sitting down, they kept watch(AQ) over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.
38 Two rebels were crucified with him,(AR) one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(AS) 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(AT) save yourself!(AU) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”(AV) 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!(AW) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe(AX) in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him(AY) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus(AZ)
45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness(BA) came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[c] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[d](BB)
47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar,(BC) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.(BD)
51 At that moment the curtain of the temple(BE) was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split(BF) 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[e] went into the holy city(BG) and appeared to many people.
54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding(BH) Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”(BI)
55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.(BJ) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,[f] and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(BK)
The Burial of Jesus(BL)
57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb(BM) that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
The Guard at the Tomb
62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63 “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’(BN) 64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body(BO) and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 “Take a guard,”(BP) Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal(BQ) on the stone(BR) and posting the guard.(BS)
