The Elder, Unto the well-beloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth:
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
For I rejoiced greatly when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren and to strangers,
who have borne witness of thy charity before the church. If thou send them forward on their journey in a godly manner, thou shalt do well,
because for His name’s sake they went forth, taking nothing from the Gentiles.
We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellow helpers to the truth.
I wrote unto the church, but Diotrephes, who loveth to have preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
Therefore if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words. And not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth those who would, and casteth them out of the church.
Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God, but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.
Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself. Yea, of this we also bear record, and ye know that our record is true.
I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee;
but I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name.
The elder unto Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth.
Beloved, I pray that in all things thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
For I rejoiced greatly, when brethren came and bare witness unto thy truth, even as thou walkest in truth.
Greater joy have I none than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.
Beloved, thou doest a faithful work in whatsoever thou doest toward them that are brethren and strangers withal;
who bare witness to thy love before the church: whom thou wilt do well to set forward on their journey worthily of God:
because that for the sake of the Name they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.
We therefore ought to welcome such, that we may be fellow-workers for the truth.
I wrote somewhat unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
Therefore, if I come, I will bring to remembrance his works which he doeth, prating against us with wicked words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and them that would he forbiddeth and casteth them out of the church.
Beloved, imitate not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: he that doeth evil hath not seen God.
Demetrius hath the witness of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, we also bear witness; and thou knowest that our witness is true.
I had many things to write unto thee, but I am unwilling to write them to thee with ink and pen:
but I hope shortly to see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be unto thee. The friends salute thee. Salute the friends by name.
The elder [of the church addresses this letter] to the beloved and esteemed Gaius, whom I love in truth.
Beloved, I pray that in every way you may succeed and prosper and be in good health [physically], just as [I know] your soul prospers [spiritually].
For I was greatly pleased when [some of the] brothers came [from time to time] and testified to your [faithfulness to the] truth [of the gospel message], that is, how you are walking in truth.
I have no greater joy than this, to hear that my [spiritual] children are living [their lives] in the truth.
Beloved, you are acting faithfully in what you are providing for the brothers, and especially when they are strangers;
and they have testified before the church of your love and friendship. You will do well to [assist them and] send them on their way in a manner worthy of God.
For these [traveling missionaries] went out for the sake of the Name [of Christ], accepting nothing [in the way of assistance] from the Gentiles.
So we ought to support such people [welcoming them as guests and providing for them], so that we may be fellow workers for the truth [that is, for the gospel message of salvation].
I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to put himself first, does not accept what we say and refuses to recognize my authority.
For this reason, if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, unjustly accusing us with wicked words and unjustified charges. And not satisfied with this, he refuses to receive the [missionary] brothers himself, and also forbids those who want to [welcome them] and puts them out of the church.
Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but [imitate] what is good. The one who practices good [exhibiting godly character, moral courage and personal integrity] is of God; the one who practices [or permits or tolerates] evil has not seen God [he has no personal experience with Him and does not know Him at all].
Demetrius has received a good testimony and commendation from everyone—and from the truth [the standard of God’s word] itself; and we add our testimony and speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true.
I had many things [to say when I began] to write to you, but I prefer not to put it down with pen (reed) and black (ink);
but I hope to see you soon, and we will speak face to face.
Peace be to you. The friends [here] greet you. Greet the friends [personally] by name.
The elderly elder [of the church addresses this letter] to the beloved (esteemed) Gaius, whom I truly love.
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in every way and [that your body] may keep well, even as [I know] your soul keeps well and prospers.
In fact, I greatly rejoiced when [some of] the brethren from time to time arrived and spoke [so highly] of the sincerity and fidelity of your life, as indeed you do live in the Truth [the whole Gospel presents].
I have no greater joy than this, to hear that my [spiritual] children are living their lives in the Truth.
Beloved, it is a fine and faithful work that you are doing when you give any service to the [Christian] brethren, and [especially when they are] strangers.
They have testified before the church of your love and friendship. You will do well to forward them on their journey [and you will please do so] in a way worthy of God’s [service].
For these [traveling missionaries] have gone out for the Name’s sake (for His sake) and are accepting nothing from the Gentiles (the heathen, the non-Israelites).
So we ourselves ought to support such people [to welcome and provide for them], in order that we may be fellow workers in the Truth (the whole Gospel) and cooperate with its teachers.
I have written briefly to the church; but Diotrephes, who likes to take the lead among them and put himself first, does not acknowledge my authority and refuses to accept my suggestions or to listen to me.
So when I arrive, I will call attention to what he is doing, his boiling over and casting malicious reflections upon us with insinuating language. And not satisfied with that, he refuses to receive and welcome the [missionary] brethren himself, and also interferes with and forbids those who would welcome them, and tries to expel (excommunicate) them from the church.
Beloved, do not imitate evil, but imitate good. He who does good is of God; he who does evil has not seen (discerned or experienced) God [has enjoyed no vision of Him and does not know Him at all].
Demetrius has warm commendation from everyone—and from the Truth itself; we add our testimony also, and you know that our testimony is true.
I had much [to say to you when I began] to write, but I prefer not to put it down with pen (a reed) and ink;
I hope to see you soon, and we will talk together face to face.
Peace be to you! (Good-bye!) The friends here send you greetings. Remember me to the friends there [to every one of them personally] by name.
The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;
Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:
Because that for his name’s sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.
We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.
I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.

The elder: To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
Dear friend, I pray that you are prospering in every way and are in good health, just as your whole life is going well.
For I was very glad when fellow believers came and testified to your fidelity to the truth—how you are walking in truth.
I have no greater joy than this: to hear that my children are walking in truth.
Dear friend, you are acting faithfully in whatever you do for the brothers and sisters, especially when they are strangers.
They have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God,
since they set out for the sake of the Name, accepting nothing from pagans.
Therefore, we ought to support such people so that we can be coworkers with the truth.
I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have first place among them, does not receive our authority.
This is why, if I come, I will remind him of the works he is doing, slandering us with malicious words. And he is not satisfied with that! He not only refuses to welcome fellow believers, but he even stops those who want to do so and expels them from the church.
Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.
Everyone speaks well of Demetrius—even the truth itself. And we also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true.
I have many things to write you, but I don’t want to write to you with pen and ink.
I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.
Peace to you. The friends send you greetings. Greet the friends by name.
The elder: To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
Dear friend, I pray that you are prospering in every way and are in good health, just as your whole life is going well.
For I was very glad when fellow believers came and testified to your fidelity to the truth – how you are walking in truth.
I have no greater joy than this: to hear that my children are walking in truth.
Dear friend, you are acting faithfully in whatever you do for the brothers and sisters, especially when they are strangers.
They have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God,

Therefore, we ought to support such people so that we can be co-workers with the truth.

From the elder. To my dear friend Gaius, whom I truly love.
Dear friend, I’m praying that all is well with you and that you enjoy good health in the same way that you prosper spiritually.
I was overjoyed when the brothers and sisters arrived and spoke highly of your faithfulness to the truth, shown by how you live according to the truth.
I have no greater joy than this: to hear that my children are living according to the truth.
Dear friend, you act faithfully in whatever you do for our brothers and sisters, even though they are strangers.
They spoke highly of your love in front of the church. You all would do well to provide for their journey in a way that honors God,
because they left on their journey for the sake of Jesus Christ without accepting any support from the Gentiles.
Therefore, we ought to help people like this so that we can be coworkers with the truth.
I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, doesn’t welcome us.
Because of this, if I come, I will bring up what he has done—making unjustified and wicked accusations against us. And as if that were not enough, he not only refuses to welcome the brothers and sisters but stops those who want to do so and even throws them out of the church!
Dear friend, don’t imitate what is bad but what is good. Whoever practices what is good belongs to God. Whoever practices what is bad has not seen God.
Everyone speaks highly of Demetrius, even the truth itself. We also speak highly of him, and you know that what we say is true.
I have a lot to say to you, but I don’t want to use pen and ink.
I hope to see you soon, and we will speak face-to-face.
Peace be with you. Your friends here greet you. Greet our friends there by name.
From: The Elder To: Dear Gaius, whom I love in truth:
Dear friend, I am praying that everything prosper with you and that you be in good health, as I know you are prospering spiritually.
For I was so happy when some brothers came and testified how faithful you are to the truth, as you continue living in the truth.
Nothing gives me greater joy than hearing that my children are living in the truth.
Dear friend, you are faithful in all the work you are doing for the brothers, even when they are strangers to you.
They have testified to your love in front of the congregation. You will be doing well if you send them on their way in a manner worthy of God,
since it was for the sake of HaShem that they went out without accepting anything from the Goyim.
It is we, therefore, who should support such people; so that we may share in their work for the truth.
I wrote something to the congregation; but Diotrephes, who likes to be the macher among them, doesn’t recognize our authority.
So if I come, I will bring up everything he is doing, including his spiteful and groundless gossip about us. And as if that weren’t enough for him, he refuses to recognize the brothers’ authority either; moreover, he stops those who want to do so and tries to drive them out of the congregation!
Dear friend, don’t imitate the bad, but the good. Those who do what is good are from God; those who do what is bad are not from God.
Everyone speaks well of Demetrius, and so does the truth itself. We vouch for him, and you know that our testimony is true.
I have much to write you, but I don’t want to write with pen and ink;
however, I am hoping to see you very soon, and we will speak face to face. Shalom to you. Your friends send you their greetings. Greet each of our friends by name.
From the church leader. To my dear friend Gaius. I love you because we follow the truth,
dear friend, and I pray all goes well for you. I hope you are as strong in body, as I know you are in spirit.
It makes me very happy when the Lord's followers come by and speak openly of how you obey the truth.
Nothing brings me greater happiness than to hear that my children are obeying the truth.
Dear friend, you have always been faithful in helping other followers of the Lord, even the ones you didn't know before.
They have told the church about your love. They say you were good enough to welcome them and to send them on their mission in a way God's servants deserve.
When they left to tell others about the Lord, they decided not to accept help from anyone who wasn't a follower.
We must support people like them, so we can take part in what they are doing to spread the truth.
I wrote to the church. But Diotrephes likes to be the number-one leader, and he won't pay any attention to us.
So if I come, I will remind him of how he has been attacking us with gossip. Not only has he been doing this, but he refuses to welcome any of the Lord's followers who come by. And when other church members want to welcome them, he puts them out of the church.
Dear friend, don't imitate the evil deeds of others, but follow the example of people who do kind deeds. They are God's children, but those who are always doing evil have never seen God.
Everyone speaks well of Demetrius, and so does the true message that he teaches. I also speak well of him, and you know what I say is true.
I have much more to say to you, but I don't want to write it with pen and ink.
I hope to see you soon, and then we can talk in person.
I pray that God will bless you with peace! Your friends send their greetings. Please give a personal greeting to each of our friends.
The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.
Beloved, I desire that in all things thou shouldest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospers.
For I rejoiced exceedingly when [the] brethren came and bore testimony to thy [holding fast the] truth, even as *thou* walkest in truth.
I have no greater joy than these things that I hear of my children walking in the truth.
Beloved, thou doest faithfully [in] whatever thou mayest have wrought towards the brethren and that strangers,
(who have witnessed of thy love before [the] assembly,) in setting forward whom on their journey worthily of God, thou wilt do well;
for for the name have they gone forth, taking nothing of those of the nations.
*We* therefore ought to receive such, that we may be fellow-workers with the truth.
I wrote something to the assembly; but Diotrephes, who loves to have the first place among them, receives us not.
For this reason, if I come, I will bring to remembrance his works which he does, babbling against us with wicked words; and not content with these, neither does he himself receive the brethren; and those who would he prevents, and casts [them] out of the assembly.
Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He that does good is of God. He that does evil has not seen God.
Demetrius has witness borne to him by all, and by the truth itself; and *we* also bear witness, and thou knowest that our witness is true.
I had many things to write to thee, but I will not with ink and pen write to thee;
but I hope soon to see thee, and we will speak mouth to mouth. Peace [be] to thee. The friends greet thee. Greet the friends by name.
The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.
Beloved, I pray that with respect to all things you may prosper and be healthy, just as your soul is prospering.
For I rejoiced greatly while brothers were coming and testifying concerning your truth— how you are walking in the truth.
I have no joy greater than these things: that I may be hearing-of my children walking in the truth.
Beloved, you are doing a faithful thing— whatever you may accomplish— for the brothers (and this, for strangers!)
who testified concerning your love before the church, as to whom you will do well having sent-them-forward worthily of God.
For they went out for the Name, taking nothing from the Gentiles.
Therefore we ought to be supporting such ones, in order that we may be fellow-workers for the truth.
I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, the one loving-to-be-first among them, is not accepting us.
For this reason, if I come I will call-to-mind his deeds which he is doing— talking-nonsense-about us with malicious words. And not being content with these things, neither is he himself accepting the brothers. And he is forbidding and putting-out of the church the ones wanting to do so.
Beloved, do not be imitating the evil, but the good. The one doing-good is from God. The one doing-evil has not seen God.
With regard to Demetrius, he has been attested by everyone, and by the truth itself. And we also are testifying, and you know that our testimony is true.
I had many things to write to you, but I do not wish to write to you with ink and pen.
But I hope to see you at-once, and we will speak mouth to mouth. Peace to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.
The ancient to the dearly beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.
Dearly beloved, concerning all things I make it my prayer that thou mayest proceed prosperously, and fare well as thy soul doth prosperously.
I was exceedingly glad when the brethren came and gave testimony to the truth in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.
I have no greater grace than this, to hear that my children walk in truth.
Dearly beloved, thou dost faithfully whatever thou dost for the brethren, and that for strangers,
Who have given testimony to thy charity in the sight of the church: whom thou shalt do well to bring forward on their way in a manner worthy of God.
Because, for his name they went out, taking nothing of the Gentiles.
We therefore ought to receive such, that we may be fellow helpers of the truth.
I had written perhaps to the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the pre-eminence among them, doth not receive us.
For this cause, if I come, I will advertise his works which he doth, with malicious words prating against us. And as if these things were not enough for him, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and them that do receive them he forbiddeth, and casteth out of the church.
Dearly beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doth good, is of God: he that doth evil, hath not seen God.
To Demetrius testimony is given by all, and by the truth itself, yea and we also give testimony: and thou knowest that our testimony is true.
I had many things to write unto thee: but I would not by ink and pen write to thee.
But I hope speedily to see thee, and we will speak mouth to mouth. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Salute the friends by name.
Greetings from the Elder. To my dear friend Gaius, a person I truly love.
My dear friend, I know that you are doing well spiritually. So I pray that everything else is going well with you and that you are enjoying good health.
Some believers came and told me about the truth in your life. They told me that you continue to follow the way of truth. This made me very happy.
It always gives me the greatest joy when I hear that my children are following the way of truth.
My dear friend, it is good that you continue to help the believers. They are people you don’t even know.
They told the church about the love you have. Please help them to continue their trip. Help them in a way that will please God.
They went on their trip to serve Christ. They did not accept any help from people who are not believers.
So we should help them. When we help them, we share with their work for the truth.
I wrote a letter to the church, but Diotrephes will not listen to what we say. He always wants to be the leader.
When I come, I will talk with him about what he is doing. He lies and says evil things about us, but that is not all. He refuses to welcome and help the believers who travel there. And he will not let others help them. If they do, he stops them from meeting with the church anymore.
My dear friend, don’t follow what is bad; follow what is good. Whoever does what is good is from God. But whoever does evil has never known God.
Everyone says good things about Demetrius, and the truth agrees with what they say. Also, we say good about him. And you know that what we say is true.
I have many things I want to tell you. But I don’t want to use pen and ink.
I hope to visit you soon. Then we can be together and talk.
Peace to you. The friends here with me send their love. Please give our love to each one of the friends there.
This letter comes from me, the leader of the believers. I am writing to you, my friend Gaius. I love you because we believe God's true message.
My friend, I pray that God will help you to live well. I know that you are well in your spirit. I pray that your body will also be well.
I was very happy when I heard news about you. Some Christian friends came here to tell me about you. They said that you are living in a good way. That is the way that God's true message tells us to live.
I am happy when I hear that my children are living like that. When they obey God's true message, it makes me very happy.
My friend, you do many things to help other believers. You help them even when they are strangers to you. This shows that you are serving God well.
These men have spoken to the group of believers here about your love. Please continue to help them when they visit you. Give them the things that they need to continue on their journey. That will make God happy.
They are travelling to different places to tell people about Jesus Christ. They do not accept any gifts from those people who are not Christians.
Because of that, we Christians must help them with the things that they need. In this way we will be working together with them as they tell people the true message about Christ.
I have already written something to the group of believers. But Diotrephes refuses to accept our authority. He really wants to be the only leader among them.
So, when I arrive there myself, I will speak to the believers about this. I will tell them clearly about the bad things that Diotrephes is doing. He tells other people bad things about us that are not true. Even that is not enough for him. He himself refuses to welcome the believers who are visiting. He also stops anyone else who wants to welcome those visitors. Instead, he sends them away from the group of believers.
My friend, do not copy what bad people do. Instead, you should copy the good things that people do. The person who does good things shows that he belongs to God. But anyone who does bad things does not know God.
All the believers say that Demetrius is a good person. He obeys God's true message. That also shows clearly that he is a good person. We also say the same thing about him. You know very well that what we say about him is true.
I would like to tell you many more things. But I do not want to write them in a letter.
Instead, I hope to come and visit you soon. Then I can see you and we can talk together.
I pray that God will give you peace. All your Christian friends here say ‘hello’ to you. Say ‘hello’ for me to each of my friends there, one by one.
The Elder, To dear Gaius, whom I love in the truth:
Dear friend, I pray that you are doing well in every way and have good health, just as your soul is doing well.
Indeed, I was overjoyed when brothers came and testified to your truthfulness because you are walking in the truth.
I have no greater joy than when I hear that my children are walking in the truth.
Dear friend, you are being faithful in what you are doing for the brothers even though they are strangers.
They have testified before the church about your love. You will do well to send them off in a manner worthy of God.
They went out for the sake of the Name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles.
Therefore, we have an obligation to support such men, so that we may be coworkers for the truth.
I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, does not welcome us.
For this reason, if I do come, I will call attention to what he is doing. He is disparaging us with wicked words, and he is not content with that. He also refuses to welcome the brothers. He even hinders and puts out of the church those who wish to welcome them.
Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does what is good is from God. The one who does what is evil has not seen God.
Demetrius has been endorsed by everyone, even by the truth itself. We also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true.
I had many things to write you, but I do not want to do it with pen and ink.
I hope to see you soon, and we will speak face to face.
Peace to you. Your friends here send their greetings to you. Greet our friends there by name.

Nothing gives me greater joy than to hear that my children [C members of the church under his spiritual care] are ·following the way of truth [walking in the truth].
·My dear friend [L Beloved], ·it is good that [you are living out your faith when] you help the brothers and sisters, even those ·you do not know [L who are strangers].
They ·told [testified before] the church about your love. ·Please help them [You will do well] to continue their trip [C as missionaries] in a way worthy of God.
[L For] They ·started out in service to Christ [L departed for the sake of the name], and they have been accepting ·nothing [no support] from nonbelievers [L Gentiles; pagans].
So we should ·help [show hospitality to; support] such people; when we do, we ·share in their work [become coworkers] for the truth.
I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be ·their leader [first], will not ·listen to us [receive us; or accept our authority].
So if I come, I will ·talk about [call to mind; bring attention to] what Diotrephes [C nothing further is known about this man] is doing, about how he ·lies and says evil things about us [slanders us with evil/malicious words]. But ·more than [not satisfied with] that, he refuses to ·accept [welcome; receive] the other brothers and sisters; he even ·stops [prevents] those who do want to ·accept [welcome; receive] them and ·puts them out of [expels them from] the church.
·My dear friend [Beloved], do not ·follow [imitate] what is ·bad [evil]; ·follow [imitate] what is good [1 Cor. 4:16; 11:1; 1 Thess. 1:6; 2:14; 2 Thess. 3:7; Heb. 6:12; 13:7]. The one who does good ·belongs to [is from] God. But the one who does evil has never ·known [L seen] God.
Everyone ·says [witnesses/testifies to] good things about Demetrius [C likely the bearer of the letter to Gaius; otherwise unknown], and the truth agrees with what they say. We also ·speak [witness; testify] well of him, and you know ·what we say [our witness/testimony] is true.
I have many things I want to write you, but I do not want to use pen and ink.
I hope to see you soon and talk face to face.
Peace to you. The friends here greet you. Please greet each friend there by name [2 John 12–13].
He commendeth Gaius for hospitality, 9 and reprehendeth Diotrephes for vainglory: 10 he exhorteth Gaius to continue in well doing: 12 and in the end commendeth Demetrius. The Elder unto the beloved Gaius whom I love in the truth.
Beloved, I wish chiefly that thou prosperedst and faredst well as thy soul prospereth.
For I rejoiceth greatly when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, how thou walkest in the truth.
I have no greater joy than these, that is, to hear that my sons walk in verity.
Beloved, thou doest faithfully, whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers,
Which bore witness of thy love before the Churches, Whom if thou bringest on their journey as it seemeth according to God, thou shalt do well,
Because that for his Name’s sake they went forth, and took nothing of the Gentiles.
We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be helpers to the truth.
I wrote unto the Church, but Diotrephes which loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
Wherefore if I come, I will call to your remembrance his deeds which he doeth, prattling against us with malicious words, and not therewith content, neither he himself receiveth the brethren, but forbideth them that would, and thrusteth them out of the Church.
Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good: he that doeth well is of God: but he that doeth evil, hath not seen God.
Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we ourselves bear record, and ye know that our record is true.
I have many things to write: but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee:
For I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak mouth to mouth. Peace be with thee. The friends salute thee. Greet thy friends by name.
From the church leader. To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love because we share the truth.
Dear friend, I know that you are spiritually well. I pray that you’re doing well in every other way and that you’re healthy.
I was very happy when some believers came and told us that you are living according to the truth.
Nothing makes me happier than to hear that my children are living according to the truth.
Dear friend, you are showing your faith in whatever you do for other believers, especially when they’re your guests.
These believers have told the congregation about your love. You will do well to support them on their trip in a way that proves you belong to God.
After all, they went on their trip to serve the one named Christ, and they didn’t accept any help from the people to whom they went.
We must support believers who go on trips like this so that we can work together with them in spreading the truth.
I wrote a letter to the congregation. But Diotrephes, who loves to be in charge, won’t accept us.
For this reason, when I come I will bring up what he’s doing. He’s not satisfied with saying malicious things about us. He also refuses to accept the believers ⌞we send⌟ as guests. He even tries to stop others who want to accept them and attempts to throw those people out of the congregation.
Dear friend, never imitate evil, but imitate good. The person who does good is from God. The person who does evil has never seen God.
Everyone, including the truth itself, says good things about Demetrius. We also say good things about him, and you know that what we say is true.
I have a lot to write to you. However, I would rather not write.
I hope to visit you very soon. Then we can talk things over personally.
Peace be with you! Your friends here send you their greetings. Greet each of our friends by name.
From the Elder— To my dear Gaius, whom I truly love.
My dear friend, I pray that everything may go well with you and that you may be in good health—as I know you are well in spirit.
I was so happy when some Christians arrived and told me how faithful you are to the truth—just as you always live in the truth.
Nothing makes me happier than to hear that my children live in the truth.
My dear friend, you are so faithful in the work you do for other Christians, even when they are strangers.
They have spoken to the church here about your love. Please help them to continue their trip in a way that will please God.
For they set out on their trip in the service of Christ without accepting any help from unbelievers.
We Christians, then, must help these people, so that we may share in their work for the truth.
I wrote a short letter to the church; but Diotrephes, who likes to be their leader, will not pay any attention to what I say.
When I come, then, I will bring up everything he has done: the terrible things he says about us and the lies he tells! But that is not enough for him; he will not receive the Christians when they come, and even stops those who want to receive them and tries to drive them out of the church!
My dear friend, do not imitate what is bad, but imitate what is good. Whoever does good belongs to God; whoever does what is bad has not seen God.
Everyone speaks well of Demetrius; truth itself speaks well of him. And we add our testimony, and you know that what we say is true.
I have so much to tell you, but I do not want to do it with pen and ink.
I hope to see you soon, and then we will talk personally.
Peace be with you. All your friends send greetings. Greet all our friends personally.
The Elder: To my dear friend Gaius: I love you in the truth.
Dear friend, I pray that you may prosper in every way and be in good health physically just as you are spiritually.
For I was very glad when some brothers came and testified to your faithfulness to the truth—how you are walking in the truth.
I have no greater joy than this: to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
Dear friend, you are showing faithfulness by whatever you do for the brothers, especially when they are strangers.
They have testified to your love in front of the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God,
since they set out for the sake of the Name, accepting nothing from pagans.
Therefore, we ought to support such men so that we can be coworkers with the truth.
I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have first place among them, does not receive us.
This is why, if I come, I will remind him of the works he is doing, slandering us with malicious words. And he is not satisfied with that! He not only refuses to welcome the brothers himself, but he even stops those who want to do so and expels them from the church.
Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.
Demetrius has a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself. And we also testify for him, and you know that our testimony is true.
I have many things to write you, but I don’t want to write to you with pen and ink.
I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face. Peace be with you. The friends send you greetings. Greet the friends by name.
From the Elder. To my dear friend Gaius whom I love in the truth:
My dear friend, I know your soul is doing well. I pray that you are doing fine in every way and that your health is good.
Some brothers in Christ came and told me about the truth in your life. They said that you are following the way of truth. This made me very happy.
It always gives me the greatest joy when I hear that my children are following the way of truth.
My dear friend, it is good that you continue to help the brothers. You are helping those that you do not even know!
These brothers told the church about the love you have. Please help them to continue their trip. Help them in a way that will please God.
They started out on their trip to serve Christ. They did not accept any help from those who are not believers.
So we should help these brothers. And when we do, we share in their work for the truth.
I wrote a letter to the church. But Diotrephes will not listen to what we say. He always wants to be their leader.
When I come, I will talk about what Diotrephes is doing. He lies and says evil things about us. But that is not all he does. He refuses to help those who are working to serve Christ. He also stops those who want to help the brothers and puts them out of the church.
My dear friend, do not follow what is bad; follow what is good. He who does what is good is from God. But he who does evil has never known God.
Everyone says good things about Demetrius. And the truth agrees with what they say. Also, we say good about him. And you know that what we say is true.
I have many things I want to tell you, but I do not want to use pen and ink.
I hope to visit you soon. Then we can be together and talk.
Peace to you. The friends here with me send their love. Please give our love to each one of the friends there.
From: The Elder To: My dear friend Gaius, whom I genuinely love.
Dear friend, I pray that you are doing well in every way and that you are healthy, just as your soul is healthy.
I was overjoyed when some brothers arrived and testified about your truthfulness and how you live according to the truth.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are living according to the truth.
Dear friend, you are faithful in whatever you do for the brothers, especially when they are strangers.
They have testified before the church about your love. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God.
After all, they went on their trip for the sake of the Name, accepting no support from gentiles.
Therefore, we ought to support such people so that we can become genuine helpers with them.
I wrote a letter to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be in charge, will not recognize our authority.
For this reason, when I come I will call attention to what he is doing in spreading false charges against us. And not content with that, he refuses to receive the brothers. He even tries to stop those who want to accept them and throws them out of the church.
Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The person who does what is good is from God. The person who does what is evil has never seen God.
Demetrius has received a good report from everyone, including the truth itself. We, too, can testify to this report, and you know that our testimony is true.
Although I have a great deal to write to you, I would rather not write with pen and ink.
Instead, I hope to see you soon and speak face to face.
May peace be with you! Your friends greet you. Greet each of our friends by name.
The elder sends this personal letter to his very dear friend Gaius with love in the truth.
My heartfelt prayer for you, my very dear friend, is that you may be as healthy and prosperous in every way are you are in soul. I was delighted when the brothers arrived and spoke so highly of the sincerity of your life—obviously you are living in the truth. Nothing brings me greater joy nowadays than hearing that “my children” are living “in the truth”.
You are doing a fine faithful piece of work, my dear friend, in looking after the brothers who come your way, especially when you have never seen them before. They have testified to your love before the Church. It is a fine thing to help them on their way—it shows you realise the importance of what they are doing. They set out on this work, as you know for the sake of “the name” and they accept no help from non-Christians. We ought to give such men a real welcome and prove that we too are co-operating with the truth.
I did write a letter to the church, but Diotrephes, who wants to be head of everything, does not recognise us! If I do come to you, I shall not forget his actions nor the slanderous things he has said against us. And it doesn’t stop there, alas, for although he wants to be leader he refuses the duty of welcoming the brothers himself, and stops those who would like to do so—he even excommunicates them!
Never let evil be your example, dear friend of mine, but always good. The man who does good is God’s man, but the man who does evil does not know God at all.
Everyone has a good word to say for Demetrius and the very truth speaks well of him. He has our warm recommendation also, and you know you can trust what we say about anyone.
There is a great deal I want to say to you but I can’t put it down in black and white. I hope to see you before long, and we will have a heart-to-heart talk. Peace be with you. All our friends here send love: please give ours personally to all our friends at your end. JOHN
¶ The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
Beloved, I wish that thou be prospered in all things and be sound, even as thy soul prospers.
¶ For I rejoiced greatly when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou dost walk in the truth.
I have no greater joy than this, to hear that my sons walk in the truth.
Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatever thou doest regarding the brethren and with the strangers,
who have borne witness of thy charity before the congregation, {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} whom if thou wilt help them as is convenient according to God, thou shalt do well;

¶ I wrote unto the congregation, {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, did not receive us.

The elder, to Gaius the beloved, whom I love in the truth.
Dear friend, I pray you may prosper concerning everything and be healthy, just as your soul prospers.

Demetrius has been testified to by all, even by the truth itself. And we also testify to him, and you know that our testimony is true.
I have many things to write to you, but I do not want to write to you by means of ink and pen.
But I hope to see you right away, and to speak face to face.
Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.
From: John, the Elder. To: Dear Gaius, whom I truly love.
Dear friend, I am praying that all is well with you and that your body is as healthy as I know your soul is.
Some of the brothers traveling by have made me very happy by telling me that your life stays clean and true and that you are living by the standards of the Gospel.
I could have no greater joy than to hear such things about my children.
Dear friend, you are doing a good work for God in taking care of the traveling teachers and missionaries who are passing through.
They have told the church here of your friendship and your loving deeds. I am glad when you send them on their way with a generous gift.
For they are traveling for the Lord and take neither food, clothing, shelter, nor money from those who are not Christians, even though they have preached to them.
So we ourselves should take care of them in order that we may become partners with them in the Lord’s work.
I sent a brief letter to the church about this, but proud Diotrephes, who loves to push himself forward as the leader of the Christians there, does not admit my authority over him and refuses to listen to me.
When I come I will tell you some of the things he is doing and what wicked things he is saying about me and what insulting language he is using. He not only refuses to welcome the missionary travelers himself but tells others not to, and when they do he tries to put them out of the church.
Dear friend, don’t let this bad example influence you. Follow only what is good. Remember that those who do what is right prove that they are God’s children; and those who continue in evil prove that they are far from God.
But everyone, including Truth itself, speaks highly of Demetrius. I myself can say the same for him, and you know I speak the truth.
I have much to say, but I don’t want to write it,
for I hope to see you soon and then we will have much to talk about together.
So good-bye for now. Friends here send their love, and please give each of the folks there a special greeting from me. Sincerely, John
The Pastor, to my good friend Gaius: How truly I love you! We’re the best of friends, and I pray for good fortune in everything you do, and for your good health—that your everyday affairs prosper, as well as your soul! I was most happy when some friends arrived and brought the news that you persist in following the way of Truth. Nothing could make me happier than getting reports that my children continue diligently in the way of Truth!
Dear friend, when you extend hospitality to Christian brothers and sisters, even when they are strangers, you make the faith visible. They’ve made a full report back to the church here, a message about your love. It’s good work you’re doing, helping these travelers on their way, hospitality worthy of God himself! They set out under the banner of the Name, and get no help from unbelievers. So they deserve any support we can give them. In providing meals and a bed, we become their companions in spreading the Truth.
Earlier I wrote something along this line to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves being in charge, denigrates my counsel. If I come, you can be sure I’ll hold him to account for spreading vicious rumors about us. As if that weren’t bad enough, he not only refuses hospitality to traveling Christians but tries to stop others from welcoming them. Worse yet, instead of inviting them in he throws them out.
Friend, don’t go along with evil. Model the good. The person who does good does God’s work. The person who does evil falsifies God, doesn’t know the first thing about God.
Everyone has a good word for Demetrius—the Truth itself stands up for Demetrius! We concur, and you know we don’t hand out endorsements lightly.
I have a lot more things to tell you, but I’d rather not use pen and ink. I hope to be there soon in person and have a heart-to-heart talk. Peace to you. The friends here say hello. Greet our friends there by name.
The elder, To the beloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth:
Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, even as your soul is well.
For I greatly rejoiced when brothers came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
Beloved, you are faithful in all you do for the brothers and for strangers,
who have testified of your love before the church. You will do well to send them along on their journey in a manner worthy of God.
For His name’s sake they went out, receiving no help from the Gentiles.
Therefore we ought to receive such men, that we might be fellow workers for the truth.
I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to put himself first among them, did not accept us.
Because of this, if I come, I will bring up what kinds of works he does: ranting against us with malicious words. Not content with that, he does not accept the brothers, and stops those who want to, and throws them out of the church.
Beloved, do not imitate that which is evil, but that which is good. Whoever does good is from God, but whoever does evil has not seen God.
Demetrius receives good reports from everyone and from the truth itself. Yes, and we also testify, and you know that our testimony is true.
I had many things to write, but I would rather not write to you with pen and ink.

The Presbyter to the beloved Gaius whom I love in truth.
Beloved, I hope you are prospering in every respect and are in good health, just as your soul is prospering.
I rejoiced greatly when some of the brothers came and testified to how truly you walk in the truth.
Nothing gives me greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to dominate, does not acknowledge us.
Therefore, if I come, I will draw attention to what he is doing, spreading evil nonsense about us. And not content with that, he will not receive the brothers, hindering those who wish to do so and expelling them from the church.
Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does what is good is of God; whoever does what is evil has never seen God.
Demetrius receives a good report from all, even from the truth itself. We give our testimonial as well, and you know our testimony is true.
I have much to write to you, but I do not wish to write with pen and ink.
Instead, I hope to see you soon, when we can talk face to face.
Peace be with you. The friends greet you; greet the friends there each by name.
The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.
Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.
For I was overjoyed when brothers came and testified to your truth, that is, how you are walking in truth.
I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.
Beloved, you are acting faithfully in whatever you accomplish for the brothers and sisters, and especially when they are strangers;
and they have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God.
For they went out for the sake of the Name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles.
Therefore we ought to support such people, so that we may prove to be fellow workers with the truth.
I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not accept what we say.
For this reason, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with malicious words; and not satisfied with this, he himself does not receive the brothers either, and he forbids those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.
Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does what is good is of God; the one who does what is evil has not seen God.
Demetrius has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself; and we testify too, and you know that our testimony is true.
I had many things to write to you, but I do not want to write to you with pen and ink;
but I hope to see you shortly, and we will speak face to face.
Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.
The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.
Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.
For I was very glad when brethren came and testified to your truth, that is, how you are walking in truth.
I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.
Beloved, you are acting faithfully in whatever you accomplish for the brethren, and especially when they are strangers;
and they have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God.

Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.
Demetrius has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself; and we add our testimony, and you know that our testimony is true.
I had many things to write to you, but I am not willing to write them to you with pen and ink;
but I hope to see you shortly, and we will speak face to face.
Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.
The Presbyter to my beloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
Beloved, I pray that everything is going well with you and that your bodily health is equal to that of your soul.
I rejoiced greatly when some of the brethren arrived and related how faithful you are to the truth, and that you continue to walk in the truth.
Nothing gives me greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
Beloved, you have been faithful in everything you do for the brethren, especially to strangers.
They have testified before the Church to your love. Please continue to help them on their journey in a manner worthy of God.
For they began their journey for the sake of the Name, and they have refused to accept any support from nonbelievers.
Therefore, we ought to show hospitality to such people so that we may be collaborators in the truth.
I have previously written something to the Church, but Diotrephes, who enjoys being in a position of leadership, refuses to acknowledge our authority.
Therefore, if I come, I shall draw attention to what he is doing. He has circulated false charges against us. And not content with that, he not only refuses to welcome the brethren but interferes with those who want to do so and expels them from the Church.
Beloved, do not imitate what is evil; rather, imitate what is good. Whoever does what is good is from God. Whoever does what is evil has never seen God.
Everyone has spoken favorably about Demetrius, and so has the Truth itself. We also will vouch for him, and you are well aware that our testimony is true.
I have much to write to you, but I do not think it prudent to do so with pen and ink.
Instead, I hope to visit you in the very near future, when we can talk together face to face.
Peace be with you. The friends send you their greetings. Greet each of our friends there by name.
From the Elder. To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth:
My dear friend, I know your soul is doing fine, and I pray that you are doing well in every way and that your health is good.
I was very happy when some brothers and sisters came and told me about the truth in your life and how you are following the way of truth.
Nothing gives me greater joy than to hear that my children are following the way of truth.
My dear friend, it is good that you help the brothers and sisters, even those you do not know.
They told the church about your love. Please help them to continue their trip in a way worthy of God.
They started out in service to Christ, and they have been accepting nothing from nonbelievers.
So we should help such people; when we do, we share in their work for the truth.
I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be their leader, will not listen to us.
So if I come, I will talk about what Diotrephes is doing, about how he lies and says evil things about us. But more than that, he refuses to accept the other brothers and sisters; he even stops those who do want to accept them and puts them out of the church.
My dear friend, do not follow what is bad; follow what is good. The one who does good belongs to God. But the one who does evil has never known God.
Everyone says good things about Demetrius, and the truth agrees with what they say. We also speak well of him, and you know what we say is true.
I have many things I want to write you, but I do not want to use pen and ink.
I hope to see you soon and talk face to face.
Peace to you. The friends here greet you. Please greet each friend there by name.
From the elder, to Gaius my dear brother, whom I love in truth.
Dear friend, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, just as it is well with your soul.
For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, just as you are living according to the truth.
I have no greater joy than this: to hear that my children are living according to the truth.
Dear friend, you demonstrate faithfulness by whatever you do for the brothers (even though they are strangers).
They have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God.
For they have gone forth on behalf of “The Name,” accepting nothing from the pagans.
Therefore we ought to support such people, so that we become coworkers in cooperation with the truth.
I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not acknowledge us.
Therefore, if I come, I will call attention to the deeds he is doing—the bringing of unjustified charges against us with evil words! And not being content with that, he not only refuses to welcome the brothers himself, but hinders the people who want to do so and throws them out of the church!
Dear friend, do not imitate what is bad but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does what is bad has not seen God.
Demetrius has been testified to by all, even by the truth itself. We also testify to him, and you know that our testimony is true.
I have many things to write to you, but I do not wish to write to you with pen and ink.
But I hope to see you right away, and we will speak face to face.
Peace be with you. The friends here greet you. Greet the friends there by name.
I, the elder, am writing this letter. I am sending it to you, my dear friend Gaius. I love you because of the truth.
Dear friend, I know that your spiritual life is going well. I pray that you also may enjoy good health. And I pray that everything else may go well with you.
Some believers came to me and told me that you are faithful to the truth. They told me that you continue to live by it. This news gave me great joy.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are living by the truth.
Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers and sisters. You are faithful even though they are strangers to you.
They have told the church about your love. Please help them by sending them on their way in a manner that honors God.
They started on their journey to serve Jesus Christ. They didn’t receive any help from those who aren’t believers.
So we should welcome people like them. We should work together with them for the truth.
I wrote to the church. But Diotrephes will not welcome us. He loves to be the first in everything.
So when I come, I will point out what he is doing. He is saying evil things that aren’t true about us. Even this doesn’t satisfy him. So he refuses to welcome other believers. He also keeps others from welcoming them. In fact, he throws them out of the church.
Dear friend, don’t be like those who do evil. Be like those who do good. Anyone who does what is good belongs to God. Anyone who does what is evil hasn’t really seen or known God.
Everyone says good things about Demetrius. He lives in keeping with the truth. We also say good things about him. And you know that what we say is true.
I have a lot to write to you. But I don’t want to write with pen and ink.
I hope I can see you soon. Then we can talk face to face.
May you have peace. The friends here send their greetings. Greet each one of the friends there.
The elder, To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.
It gave me great joy when some believers came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

The elder, To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, just as you are progressing spiritually.
It gave me great joy when some believers came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

The Elder, To the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth:
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.
For I rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren and for strangers,
who have borne witness of your love before the church. If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you will do well,
because they went forth for His name’s sake, taking nothing from the Gentiles.
We therefore ought to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth.
I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us.
Therefore, if I come, I will call to mind his deeds which he does, prating against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church.
Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.
Demetrius has a good testimony from all, and from the truth itself. And we also bear witness, and you know that our testimony is true.
I had many things to write, but I do not wish to write to you with pen and ink;
but I hope to see you shortly, and we shall speak face to face. Peace to you. Our friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.
The church leader writes to the much-loved Gaius. I love you because of the truth.
Dear friend, I pray that you are doing well in every way. I pray that your body is strong and well even as your soul is.
I was very happy when some Christians came and told me about how you are following the truth.
I can have no greater joy than to hear that my children are following the truth.
Dear friend, you are doing a good work by being kind to the Christians, and for sure, to the strangers.
They have told the church about your love. It will be good for you to help them on their way as God would have you.
These people are working for the Lord. They are taking nothing from the people who do not know God.
So we should help such people. That way we will be working with them as they teach the truth.
I wrote a letter to the church. But Diotrephes wants to be the leader and put himself first. He will have nothing to do with us.
So if I come, I will show what he is doing by the bad things he is saying about us. Not only that, he will not take the Christian brothers into his home. He keeps others from doing it also. When they do, he puts them out of the church.
Dear friend, do not follow what is sinful, but follow what is good. The person who does what is good belongs to God. The person who does what is sinful has not seen God.
Everyone speaks good things about Demetrius. The truth itself speaks for him. We say the same thing also and you know we are speaking the truth.
I have much to write about but I do not want to write it in this letter.
I hope to see you soon and then we can talk together. May you have peace. The friends here greet you. Greet each friend there by name.
This letter is from John, the elder. I am writing to Gaius, my dear friend, whom I love in the truth.
Dear friend, I hope all is well with you and that you are as healthy in body as you are strong in spirit.
Some of the traveling teachers recently returned and made me very happy by telling me about your faithfulness and that you are living according to the truth.
I could have no greater joy than to hear that my children are following the truth.
Dear friend, you are being faithful to God when you care for the traveling teachers who pass through, even though they are strangers to you.
They have told the church here of your loving friendship. Please continue providing for such teachers in a manner that pleases God.
For they are traveling for the Lord, and they accept nothing from people who are not believers.
So we ourselves should support them so that we can be their partners as they teach the truth.
I wrote to the church about this, but Diotrephes, who loves to be the leader, refuses to have anything to do with us.
When I come, I will report some of the things he is doing and the evil accusations he is making against us. Not only does he refuse to welcome the traveling teachers, he also tells others not to help them. And when they do help, he puts them out of the church.
Dear friend, don’t let this bad example influence you. Follow only what is good. Remember that those who do good prove that they are God’s children, and those who do evil prove that they do not know God.
Everyone speaks highly of Demetrius, as does the truth itself. We ourselves can say the same for him, and you know we speak the truth.
I have much more to say to you, but I don’t want to write it with pen and ink.
For I hope to see you soon, and then we will talk face to face.
Peace be with you. Your friends here send you their greetings. Please give my personal greetings to each of our friends there.
The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
Beloved, I wish in all things that you prospered and fared well, even as your soul prospers.
I rejoiced greatly when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, how you walk in truth.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren, and for strangers,
who bear witness of your love before all the congregation. Which brethren, when you bring them forwards on their journey (as it befits God), you will do well,
because for his name’s sake they went forth, and took nothing from the Gentiles.
We therefore ought to receive such brethren, so that we also may be helpers of the truth.
I wrote to the congregation, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the pre-eminence among them, will not receive us.
And so if I come, I will declare the things he does, scoffing on us with malicious words. And he is not content with that. Not only does he himself not receive the brethren, he also forbids those who would, and thrusts them out of the congregation.
Beloved, do not follow that which is evil, but that which is good. He who does well is of God, but he who does evil does not see God.
Demetrius has a good report from all men, and from the truth. Yea and we ourselves also bear witness, and you know that our witness is true.
I have many things to write, but I do not wish to write with ink and pen to you.
For I trust I will shortly see you, and we shall speak mouth to mouth.
Peace be with you. The friends send you greetings. Greet the friends by name.
The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.
Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, just as it is well with your soul.
I was overjoyed when some of the friends arrived and testified to your faithfulness to the truth, namely, how you walk in the truth.
I have no greater joy than this, to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the friends, even though they are strangers to you;
they have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on in a manner worthy of God;
for they began their journey for the sake of Christ, accepting no support from non-believers.
Therefore we ought to support such people, so that we may become co-workers with the truth.

The Elder to beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.
Beloved, I pray that all is going well with you, and that you are every bit as healthy physically as you are spiritually.
I was absolutely delighted, you see, when some of the family arrived and bore witness to your truthfulness, since clearly you are walking in the truth.
Nothing gives me greater joy than this, to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
Beloved, when you are doing all that you do for family members, even when they are strangers, you are doing a faithful work.
These people have borne witness to your love in the presence of the assembly, and you will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God.
They went out for the sake of the Name, not accepting help from outsiders.
We ought to support people like that, so that we may become fellow workers with the truth.
I have written something to the assembly. But Diotrephes, who wants to be the most important person there, refuses to acknowledge us.
So, then, if I come, I will refer back to what he has done, and the slanderous words he has spoken against us. Not being satisfied with that, he doesn’t welcome family members himself; and, when others want to do so, he forbids them and throws them out of the assembly.
Beloved, don’t imitate evil; imitate good! Someone who does good is from God; someone who does evil has not seen God.
Demetrius has been well attested by everybody, and by the truth itself. We join in this testimony, and you know that our testimony is true.
I have much to write to you, but I don’t want to do it with pen and ink.
I am hoping instead to see you very soon, so that we can talk face to face.
Peace be with you. All the friends greet you. Greet all the friends by name.
From the Zaken (Elder, SHEMOT 3:16). To Gaius HaAhuv (Gaius the beloved), for whom I have ahavah (agape) b’Emes.
Chaver, it is my tefillah that all may be hatzlocha (successful) with you, and that you may be shalem b’guf (healthy), just as your nefesh (soul) is matsli’ach (successful).
For I had simcha gedola (much joy) when the Achim b’Moshiach arrived [here] and gave eidus (testimony) of you being in HaEmes (the Truth), just as your walk is halakhah b’Derech Emes (conduct in the Way of Truth).
I have no greater simcha than this, to hear of my bnei b’Moshiach, that their walk is halakhah b’Derech Emes.
Chaver, you do a thing of emunah (faith) when it is done for the Achim b’Moshiach [engaged in the Shlichus (Divine Mission) of Messianic Kiruv Rechokim itineration in the kehillot], especially when they are people you don’t know.
They gave eidushaft (witness of testimony) to your ahavah (agape) before the kehillah (assembly) [here]; you will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of Hashem.
For, on behalf of Hashem they went forth [in the Shlichus of Moshiach’s Kiruv Rechokim], taking nothing from the Goyim.
Therefore, we ought to give hachnosas orchim (hospitality) to such, in order that we may be ozrim (helpers) with HaEmes.
I wrote something to the kehillah [there]; but Diotrephes, who has fallen in love with being "Rosh of the Kehillah," does not receive us.
Oib azoi (consequently), if I come, I will remember his "ma’asim" ("works") which he does, his bringing unjustified charges against us with lashon horah (evil speech). And not being satisfied with performing these "mitzvot", he even refuses to receive the Achim b’Moshiach, and, those intending to do so, he hinders and expels out of the kehillah.
Chaver, do not imitate HaRah (Evil); rather, imitate HaTov (Good). The one doing HaTov is from Hashem. The one doing HaRah has not regarded Hashem.
To Demetrius, eidus (witness of testimony, commendation) has been given by all and, personally, by no less than HaEmes (the Truth); we also give eidus, and you have da’as that our eidus is emes.
I had many things to write to you, but I do not want to write to you with pen and ink.
But I have the tikvah (hope) to see you imminently, and we will speak panim el panim (directly, in person). Drishat Shalom to you. Drishat Shalom from the Chaverim [here]. Drishat Shalom by name to each of the Chaverim [there].
Drishat Shalom to you. Drishat Shalom from the Chaverim [here]. Drishat Shalom by name to each of the Chaverim [there]. T.N. It is possible that the first book of the Brit Chadasha was written by Ya’akov [see p.848], possibly around 45 C.E. However, the iggeret hakodesh on this page is written by Moshiach’s Shliach Yochanan to Gaius with the prayer that as Gaius prospers spiritually, he will succeed in every aspect of his life. It appears that the Shliach Yochanan had led Gaius to faith in the Moshiach (see verse 3-4) and Gaius in turn had shown kindness and hachnosas orchim (hospitality) to certain of Moshiach’s traveling emissaries, who had reported Gaius’ generosity (verse 6) before the Kehillah where the Shliach Yochanan is now, probably the same kehillah in Asia Minor where Yochanan did much of his other writing: his Besurah Geulah, his other iggrot kodesh, and his Hisgalus. The purpose of the letter is to commend an itinerant emissary of Moshiach named Demetrius (verse 12). When planting a new Messianic Shul, the non-believers are not to be asked for financial support (verse 7). Therefore, the Messianic kehillot and their Zekenim are to offer hachnosas orchim and material help to travelling emissaries of Moshiach such as Demetrius. Also this epistle teaches that when one knows G-d, the Truth gives an inner eidus or testimony (verse 12). Other Scripture on this matter of assurance are found in Ro 8:15-17, 38f; Ga 4:6; Pp 1:6; 2Ti 1:12; Yn 5:24; 1Yn 5:13; 1Yn 4:13; 5:10; 3:18- 19; MJ 6:11; 10:22. As we study the Holy Bible we find that we can discover there (not in emotional experience or in our circumstances) that we are heirs of salvation and children with a heavenly calling, citizenship, and destiny. See also 2Ti 3:14; Col 2:2; 1Th 1:5; Ro 14:5; 4:21; 1Th 2:13; Ac 2:38, 5:32; Ga 3:2; Ac 15:8; 1Yn 3:24; Eph 1:13-14; 4:30. There are other Scriptures that warn against self-deception in these matters, and give moral and spiritual tests so that anyone can see if he or she is walking in the light—see 1Yn 2:3-5; 3:9f; 14, 18f, 4:7; 5:1, 4, 18; 1 Yn 3:19; 1 Yn 1:6; 2:4, 9- 11, 23: 3:6-10, 4:8,20; 2Yn 9; 3Yn 11.
The elder, To the beloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth:
Beloved, I wish chiefly that you prosper and fare well as your soul prospers.
For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified of the truth that is in you; how you walk in the truth.
I have no greater joy than these: to hear that my sons walk in truth.
Beloved, you faithfully do whatever you do for the brother and for strangers;
who bore witness of your love before the churches. If you bring them on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you shall do well.
Because, they went forth for His Name’s sake and took nothing from the Gentiles.
Therefore, we ought to receive such, so that we might be helpers to the Truth.
I wrote to the church. But Diotrephes (who loves to have the pre-eminence among them) will not receive us.
Therefore, if I come, I will remind you of his deeds which he does - prattling against us with malicious words - and not content with this, he not only does not receive the brothers himself, but forbids those who would and thrusts them out of the church.
Beloved, do not follow that which is evil, but that which is good. The one who does well is of God. But the one who does evil has not seen God.
Demetrius has good report of all, and of the truth itself. Indeed, and we ourselves bear witness. And you know that our witness is true.
I have many things to write. But I will not write to you with ink and pen.
For I trust I shall shortly see you. And we shall speak mouth to mouth. Peace be with you. The friends salute you. Greet your friends by name.
The elder to the beloved Ga′ius, whom I love in the truth.
Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in health; I know that it is well with your soul.
For I greatly rejoiced when some of the brethren arrived and testified to the truth of your life, as indeed you do follow the truth.
No greater joy can I have than this, to hear that my children follow the truth.
Beloved, it is a loyal thing you do when you render any service to the brethren, especially to strangers,
who have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey as befits God’s service.
For they have set out for his sake and have accepted nothing from the heathen.
So we ought to support such men, that we may be fellow workers in the truth.
I have written something to the church; but Diot′rephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge my authority.
So if I come, I will bring up what he is doing, prating against me with evil words. And not content with that, he refuses himself to welcome the brethren, and also stops those who want to welcome them and puts them out of the church.
Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. He who does good is of God; he who does evil has not seen God.
Deme′trius has testimony from every one, and from the truth itself; I testify to him too, and you know my testimony is true.
I had much to write to you, but I would rather not write with pen and ink;
I hope to see you soon, and we will talk together face to face.
Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends, every one of them.

The elder. To Gaius the loved one, whom I love in truth:
Loved ones, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, just as it is well with your soul.
For I was overjoyed when some brethren came and testified of the truth in you—how you are walking in truth.
I have no greater joy than this—to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
Loved ones, you are acting faithfully in whatever you do for the brethren and especially for strangers.
They have testified to your love before Messiah’s community. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God.
For on behalf of the Name they went out, accepting nothing from the pagans.
Therefore we ought to support such people, so we might become co-workers in the truth.
I wrote something to Messiah’s community, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, doesn’t welcome us.
So if I do come, I will call attention to what he is doing—slandering us with wicked words. Not even content with that, he refuses to welcome the brethren, and even forbids those who want to do so—throwing them out of the community!
Loved ones, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.
Demetrius has a good testimony from everyone, even from the truth itself. We also vouch for him—and you know that our testimony is true.
I have much to write you, but I don’t want to write to you with ink and pen.
But I hope to see you soon, and we will speak face to face.
Shalom aleichem. The friends here send their greetings. Greet the friends there by name.
I, the elder, to Gaius, who is much loved by all and loved in truth by me.
My beloved friend, I pray that everything is going well for you and that your body is as healthy as your soul is prosperous.
I was thrilled when the brothers and sisters came and told me stories of your faithfulness as you continue to walk in the truth.
The greatest joy in my life is hearing how my children are walking in the truth.
My friend, you demonstrate your faithfulness in all the things you do for the brothers and sisters; even when they are strangers to you, you treat them as family.
These friends tell the entire church how you have extended your hand to them in love. You will do well to send them on in a way that is in keeping with God.
They have gone out to serve under the banner of the Name, and they do not accept gifts from those outside our faith community.
We should give people like this our full support so that we can share in this work for the truth.
I wrote some things specifically to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be the one up front, rejects us.
If I come, you can be sure that I will call him out and draw attention to his actions. He assails us with lies and deceit. As if that were not enough, he does not welcome the traveling missionaries into his home. Instead, he hinders any who do so and expels them from the church.
Dear friend, don’t follow his evil ways. Instead, imitate the good and righteous life. The one doing what is good belongs to God, but those who pursue evil have never even laid eyes on God.
Demetrius has a good reputation with everyone we know. The truth stands on his side, and we add our unreserved recommendation to the long list of accounts on his behalf. You can rest assured that we are telling the truth.
There is so much I would like to say to you, but I do not want to say it with ink and pen.
I expect us to be together soon and talk about these things face-to-face.
May you experience true peace. I send you greetings from the fellow believers here. Greet all our friends there personally.
The elder to Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth.
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be healthy, even as your soul prospers.
For I rejoiced greatly when brothers came and testified about your truth, even as you walk in truth.
I have no greater joy than this: to hear about my children walking in truth.
Beloved, you do a faithful work in whatever you accomplish for those who are brothers and strangers.
They have testified about your love before the assembly. You will do well to send them forward on their journey in a way worthy of God,
because for the sake of the Name they went out, taking nothing from the Gentiles.
We therefore ought to receive such, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.
I wrote to the assembly, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, doesn’t accept what we say.
Therefore, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words. Not content with this, he doesn’t receive the brothers himself, and those who would, he forbids and throws out of the assembly.
Beloved, don’t imitate that which is evil, but that which is good. He who does good is of God. He who does evil hasn’t seen God.
Demetrius has the testimony of all, and of the truth itself; yes, we also testify, and you know that our testimony is true.
I had many things to write to you, but I am unwilling to write to you with ink and pen;
but I hope to see you soon. Then we will speak face to face. Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.
From the leader of the church people. I send greetings to my dear Gaius. I love you because you have Christ.
My dear brother, I ask God that you may be all right in every way and that your body may be well. I know that your soul is all right.
I was very happy when the brothers came and told me that you have been true. They said you are really living the right way.
Nothing can make me more happy than to hear that my children are living in the right way. My dear brother, when you help your Christian brothers in any way, even though you do not know them, you show that you do what you say you believe.
They have told the people of the church here how you showed your love to them. Please send them on their way as God would have you do.
They went out to do Christ's work. And they have not taken any help from people who do not believe in God.
So we should help such men with what they need. Then we are doing our part to tell the true message. I wrote a letter to the people of the church. But Diotrephes wants to be the leader. He will not listen to us.
So if I come, I will show what he is doing. He is saying wrong things about us. And that is not all. He does not take our brothers into his own home. And he stops other people who want to take them in. He will not let them be church members any longer.
My dear brother, do not do the wrong things people do, but do the good things people do. Anyone who does good things belongs to God. Anyone who does wrong things has never seen God.
Everyone says Demetrius is a good man. All this is true. We say the same thing too. And you know that what we say is true.
I have much to write to you. But I do not want to write to you with pen and ink.
I hope to see you very soon. Then we will talk together.
May God give you peace. Our friends greet you. Greet everyone of my friends.
The elder man to Gaius, most dear brother [most dear], whom I love in truth.
Most dear brother, of all things I make prayer, that thou enter, and fare wellfully, as thy soul doeth wellfully.
I joyed [full] greatly, for brethren came, and bare witnessing to thy truth, as thou walkest in truth.
I have not more grace of these things, than that I hear that my sons walk in truth.
Most dear brother, thou doest faithfully, whatever thou workest in brethren [Most dear, thou doest faithfully, whatever thou workest into brethren], and that into pilgrims,
which yielded witnessing to thy charity, in the sight of the church; which thou leadest forth [whom thou leadest forth], and doest well-worthily to God.
For they went forth for his name, and took nothing of heathen men. [Soothly for his name they went forth, nothing taking of heathen men.]
Therefore we owe to receive such, that we be even-workers of truth.
I had written peradventure to the church, but this Diotrephes, that loveth to bear primacy in them [that loveth for to bear primacy, or chief places, in them], receiveth not us.
For this thing, if I shall come, I shall admonish his works, which he doeth, chiding against us with evil words. And as if these things suffice not to him, neither he receiveth brethren, and forbiddeth them that receive, and putteth out of the church [and casteth out of the church].
Most dear brother [Most dear], do not thou follow evil thing, but that that is good thing. He that doeth well, is of God; he that doeth evil, seeth not God.
Witnessing is yielded to Demetrius of all men, and of truth itself; but also we bear witnessing, and thou knowest, that our witnessing is true.
I had many things to write to thee, but I would not write to thee by ink and pen.
For I hope soon to see thee, and we shall speak mouth to mouth. Peace be to thee. Friends greet thee well. Greet thou well friends by name.
The Elder to Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth!
beloved, concerning all things I desire thee to prosper, and to be in health, even as thy soul doth prosper,
for I rejoiced exceedingly, brethren coming and testifying of the truth in thee, even as thou in truth dost walk;
greater than these things I have no joy, that I may hear of my children in truth walking.
Beloved, faithfully dost thou do whatever thou mayest work to the brethren and to the strangers,
who did testify of thy love before an assembly, whom thou wilt do well, having sent forward worthily of God,
because for [His] name they went forth, nothing receiving from the nations;
we, then, ought to receive such, that fellow-workers we may become to the truth.
I did write to the assembly, but he who is loving the first place among them -- Diotrephes -- doth not receive us;
because of this, if I may come, I will cause him to remember his works that he doth, with evil words prating against us; and not content with these, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and those intending he doth forbid, and out of the assembly he doth cast.
Beloved, be not thou following that which is evil, but that which is good; he who is doing good, of God he is, and he who is doing evil hath not seen God;
to Demetrius testimony hath been given by all, and by the truth itself, and we also -- we do testify, and ye have known that our testimony is true.
Many things I had to write, but I do not wish through ink and pen to write to thee,
and I hope straightway to see thee, and mouth to mouth we shall speak. Peace to thee! salute thee do the friends; be saluting the friends by name.
