If then ye have judgments to make on things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church!
If then ye have to judge things pertaining to this life, do ye set them to judge who are of no account in the church?
So if you have lawsuits dealing with matters of this life, are you appointing those as judges [to hear disputes] who are of no account in the church?
If then you do have such cases of everyday life to decide, why do you appoint [as judges to lay them before] those who [from the standpoint] of the church count for least and are without standing?
If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.
So if you have such matters, do you appoint as your judges those who have no standing in the church?
So then if you have ordinary lawsuits, do you appoint people as judges who aren’t respected by the church?
So if you require judgments about matters of everyday life, why do you put them in front of men who have no standing in the Messianic Community?
Why do you take everyday complaints to judges who are not respected by the church?
If then ye have judgments as to things of this life, set those [to judge] who are little esteemed in the assembly.
So indeed, if you have cases pertaining-to-this-life, are you seating these [as judges]— the ones having been of-no-account in the church?
If therefore you have judgments of things pertaining to this world, set them to judge, who are the most despised in the church.
So if you have such matters to be judged, why do you take them to those who are not part of the church? They mean nothing to you.
If you want to decide an ordinary matter like that, what do you do? Sometimes you go to a judge who does not believe in God. You should never do that! The church does not respect people like that.
So if you have lawsuits involving matters of this life, do you appoint those people as your judges whom the church considers of no account?
So if you have such cases, why do you lay them before those who have no standing in the church?

If you have ·ordinary cases [cases/legal disputes of this life] that must be judged, ·are you going to appoint people as judges who mean nothing to the church? [will you appoint judges with no standing in/whose lifestyle is rejected by the church?; or go ahead and appoint the least members of the church to judge them! C in the latter interpretation, Paul speaks sarcastically.]
If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them up which are least esteemed in the Church.
When you have cases dealing with this life, why do you allow people whom the church has a low opinion of to be your judges?
If such matters come up, are you going to take them to be settled by people who have no standing in the church?
So if you have cases pertaining to this life, do you select those who have no standing in the church to judge?
So if you have disagreements that must be judged, why do you take them to those who are not part of the church? They mean nothing to the church.
So if you have cases dealing with this life, why do you appoint as judges people who have no standing in the church?
When any of you has a grievance against another, aren’t you ashamed to bring the matter to be settled before a pagan court instead of before the church? Don’t you know that Christians will one day judge the world? And if you are to judge the world do you consider yourselves incapable of settling such infinitely smaller matters? Don’t you also know that we shall judge the very angels themselves—how much more then matters of this world only! In any case, if you find you have to judge matters of this world, why choose as judges those who count for nothing in the church? I say this deliberately to rouse your sense of shame. Are you really unable to find among your number one man with enough sense to decide a dispute between one and another of you, or must one brother resort to law against another and that before those who have no faith in Christ! It is surely obvious that something must be seriously wrong in your church for you to be having lawsuits at all. Why not let yourself be wronged or cheated? For when you go to law against your brother you yourself do him wrong, for you cheat him of Christian love and forgiveness.
If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set as judges the most humble who are in the congregation. {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones}

Why then go to outside judges who are not even Christians?
And how dare you take each other to court! When you think you have been wronged, does it make any sense to go before a court that knows nothing of God’s ways instead of a family of Christians? The day is coming when the world is going to stand before a jury made up of followers of Jesus. If someday you are going to rule on the world’s fate, wouldn’t it be a good idea to practice on some of these smaller cases? Why, we’re even going to judge angels! So why not these everyday affairs? As these disagreements and wrongs surface, why would you ever entrust them to the judgment of people you don’t trust in any other way?

So suppose you disagree with one another in matters like this. Who do you ask to decide which of you is right? Do you ask people who live in a way the church disapproves of? Of course not!
Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church?

If, then, you have cases concerning matters of the Olam Hazeh, how could you appoint as your Bet Din dayanim men who have no standing in the kehillah?
If then you have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set those up who are least-esteemed in the Church.
If then you have such cases, why do you lay them before those who are least esteemed by the church?

To put it another way, if you are asking the courts to adjudicate your mundane conflicts, aren’t you placing your problems under the authority of judges who have no standing within the church?
If then you have to judge things pertaining to this life, do you set them to judge who are of no account in the assembly?
So if you have complaints about things in this life, why do you take them to those who are not church people?
Therefore if ye have worldly dooms, ordain ye those contemptible men [ordain ye those contemptible men, or of little reputation], that be in the church, to deem.
