Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Turn Us Back, O God
For the choir director. Of the sons of Korah. A Psalm.
85 O Yahweh, You showed (A)favor to Your land;
You [a](B)returned the fortunes of Jacob.
2 You (C)forgave the iniquity of Your people;
You (D)covered all their sin. [b]Selah.
3 You (E)withdrew all Your fury;
You (F)turned back from Your burning anger.
4 (G)Turn us back, O God of our salvation,
And (H)cause Your vexation toward us to cease.
5 Will (I)You be angry with us forever?
Will You prolong Your anger from generation to generation?
6 Will You not Yourself (J)return to [c]revive us,
That Your people may (K)be glad in You?
7 Show us, O Yahweh, Your lovingkindness,
And (L)give us Your salvation.
8 Let me hear what the God, Yahweh, will speak;
For He will (M)speak peace to His people, [d]to His holy ones;
But let them not (N)turn back to [e]folly.
9 Surely (O)His salvation is near to those who [f]fear Him,
That (P)glory may dwell in our land.
10 (Q)Lovingkindness and [g]truth have met together;
(R)Righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
11 [h]Truth (S)springs up from the earth,
And righteousness looks down from heaven.
12 Indeed, (T)Yahweh will give what is good,
And our (U)land will yield its produce.
13 (V)Righteousness will go before Him
And will establish the way of His steps.
11 And the (A)sons of Judah and the sons of Israel will be (B)gathered together,
And they will set for themselves (C)one head,
And they will go up from the land,
For great will be the day of Jezreel.
No Compassion for Children of Harlotry
2 [a]Say to your brothers, “[b]Ammi,” and to your sisters, “[c]Ruhamah.”
2 “Contend with your mother, (D)contend,
For she is (E)not my wife, and I am not her husband;
And let her remove her (F)harlotry from her face
And her adultery from between her breasts,
3 Lest I strip her (G)naked
And set her forth as on the (H)day when she was born
And (I)make her like a wilderness
And [d]make her like dry land
And put her to death with (J)thirst.
4 Also, I will have no compassion on her children
Because they are (K)children of harlotry.
5 For their mother has (L)played the harlot;
She who conceived them has acted shamefully.
For she said, ‘(M)I will go after my lovers,
Who (N)give me my bread and my water,
My wool and my flax, my (O)oil and my drink.’
6 Therefore, behold, I will (P)hedge up [e]her way with (Q)thorns,
And I will build [f]a wall against her so that she cannot find her (R)paths.
7 So she will (S)pursue her lovers, but she will not overtake them;
And she will seek them, but will not find them.
Then she will say, ‘(T)I will go, and I will return to my (U)first husband,
For it was (V)better for me then than now!’
8 “Now she does (W)not know that it was (X)I who gave her the grain, the new wine, and the oil,
And multiplied silver and gold for her,
Which they [g]used for Baal.
9 Therefore, I will (Y)take back My grain at [h]harvest time
And My new wine in its season.
I will also deliver My wool and My flax from them
Given to cover her nakedness.
10 So now I will (Z)uncover her lewdness
In the sight of her lovers,
And no one will deliver her out of My hand.
11 I will also (AA)cease all her joy,
Her (AB)feasts, her (AC)new moons, her sabbaths,
And all her appointed times.
12 And I will (AD)make desolate her vines and fig trees,
Of which she said, ‘These are my wages
Which my lovers have given me.’
And I will (AE)make them a forest,
And the (AF)beasts of the field will devour them.
13 So I will visit the (AG)days of the Baals upon her
When she used to [i](AH)offer offerings in smoke to them
And (AI)adorn herself with her [j]earrings and jewelry
And go after her lovers, so that she (AJ)forgot Me,” declares Yahweh.
Yahweh’s Faithful Betrothal
14 “Therefore, behold, I will allure her
(AK)And bring her into the wilderness
And speak to her heart.
15 Then I will give her her (AL)vineyards from there
And (AM)the valley of Achor as a door of hope.
And she will [k](AN)sing there as in the days of her youth,
As in the (AO)day when she came up from the land of Egypt.
Jesus Calms a Storm
22 (A)Now it happened that on one of those days He and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side of (B)the lake.” So they set sail. 23 But as they were sailing along, He fell asleep, and a windstorm descended on (C)the lake, and they began to be swamped and in danger. 24 And they came to Him and woke Him up, saying, “(D)Master, Master, we are perishing!” And He woke up and (E)rebuked the wind and the surging waves, and they stopped, and [a]it became calm. 25 And He said to them, “Where is your faith?” They were fearful and marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?”
