Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
24 They[a] see your processions, O God—
the processions of my God, my king, who marches along in holy splendor.[b]
25 Singers walk in front;
musicians follow playing their stringed instruments,[c]
in the midst of young women playing tambourines.[d]
26 In your large assemblies praise God,
the Lord, in the assemblies of Israel.[e]
27 There is little Benjamin, their ruler,[f]
and the princes of Judah in their robes,[g]
along with the princes of Zebulun and the princes of Naphtali.
28 God has decreed that you will be powerful.[h]
O God, you who have acted on our behalf, demonstrate your power.
29 Because of your temple in Jerusalem,[i]
kings bring tribute to you.
30 Sound your battle cry against[j] the wild beast of the reeds,[k]
and the nations that assemble like a herd of calves led by bulls.[l]
They humble themselves[m] and offer gold and silver as tribute.[n]
God[o] scatters[p] the nations that like to do battle.
31 They come with red cloth[q] from Egypt.
Ethiopia[r] voluntarily offers tribute[s] to God.
32 O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God.
Sing praises to the Lord, (Selah)
33 to the one who rides through the sky from ancient times.[t]
Look! He thunders loudly.[u]
34 Acknowledge God’s power,[v]
his sovereignty over Israel,
and the power he reveals in the skies.[w]
35 You are awe-inspiring, O God, as you emerge from your holy temple.[x]
It is the God of Israel[y] who gives the people power and strength.
God deserves praise![z]
16 As the ark of the Lord entered the City of David, Saul’s daughter Michal looked out the window. When she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him.[a] 17 They brought the ark of the Lord and put it in its place[b] in the middle of the tent that David had pitched for it. Then David offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before the Lord. 18 When David finished offering the burnt sacrifices and peace offerings, he pronounced a blessing over the people in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 19 He then handed out to each member of the entire assembly of Israel,[c] both men and women, a portion of bread, a date cake,[d] and a raisin cake. Then all the people went home.[e] 20 When David went home to pronounce a blessing on his own house,[f] Michal, Saul’s daughter, came out to meet him.[g] She said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished[h] himself this day! He has exposed himself today before his servants’ slave girls the way a vulgar fool[i] might do!”
21 David replied to Michal, “It was before the Lord! I was celebrating before the Lord, who chose me over your father and his entire family[j] and appointed me as leader over the Lord’s people Israel. 22 I am willing to shame and humiliate myself even more than this.[k] But with the slave girls whom you mentioned, let me be distinguished.” 23 Now Michal, Saul’s daughter, had no children to the day of her death.
31 “To what then should I compare the people[a] of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace[b] and calling out to one another,[c]
‘We played the flute for you, yet you did not dance;[d]
we wailed in mourning,[e] yet you did not weep.’
33 For John the Baptist has come[f] eating no bread and drinking no wine,[g] and you say, ‘He has a demon!’[h] 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him,[i] a glutton and a drunk, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’[j] 35 But wisdom is vindicated[k] by all her children.”[l]
