Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
12 Evil men plot against the godly[a]
and viciously attack them.[b]
13 The Lord laughs in disgust[c] at them,
for he knows that their day is coming.[d]
14 Evil men draw their swords
and prepare their bows,
to bring down[e] the oppressed and needy,
and to slaughter those who are godly.[f]
15 Their swords will pierce[g] their own hearts,
and their bows will be broken.
16 The little bit that a godly man owns is better than
the wealth of many evil men,[h]
17 for evil men will lose their power,[i]
but the Lord sustains[j] the godly.
18 The Lord watches over the innocent day by day,[k]
and they possess a permanent inheritance.[l]
19 They will not be ashamed when hard times come;[m]
when famine comes they will have enough to eat.[n]
20 But[o] evil men will die;
the Lord’s enemies will be incinerated[p]—
they will go up in smoke.[q]
21 Evil men borrow, but do not repay their debt,
but the godly show compassion and are generous.[r]
22 Surely[s] those favored by the Lord[t] will possess the land,
but those rejected[u] by him will be wiped out.[v]
Solomon’s Reign Ends
29 The rest of the events of Solomon’s reign, from start to finish, are recorded[a] in the Annals of Nathan the Prophet, the Prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and the Vision of Iddo the Seer pertaining to Jeroboam son of Nebat. 30 Solomon ruled over all Israel from Jerusalem for forty years. 31 Then Solomon passed away[b] and was buried in the city of his father David. His son Rehoboam replaced him as king.
35 When it was already late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is an isolated place[a] and it is already very late. 36 Send them away so that they can go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy something for themselves to eat.” 37 But he answered them,[b] “You[c] give them something to eat.” And they said, “Should we go and buy bread for 200 silver coins[d] and give it to them to eat?” 38 He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.” 39 Then he directed them all to sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they reclined in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. He[e] gave them to his[f] disciples to serve the people, and he divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and they picked up the broken pieces and fish that were left over, twelve baskets full. 44 Now[g] there were 5,000 men[h] who ate the bread.[i]
