2 Samuel 7:1-14

The Lord Establishes a Covenant with David

The king settled into his palace,[a] for the Lord gave him relief[b] from all his enemies on all sides.[c] The king said to Nathan the prophet, “Look! I am living in a palace made from cedar, while the ark of God sits in the middle of a tent.” Nathan replied to the king, “You should go[d] and do whatever you have in mind,[e] for the Lord is with you.” That night the Lord’s message came to Nathan, “Go, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord has said: Do you really intend to build a house for me to live in? I have not lived in a house from the time I brought the Israelites up from Egypt to the present day. Instead, I was traveling with them and living in a tent.[f] Wherever I moved among all the Israelites, I did not say[g] to any of their leaders[h] whom I appointed to care for[i] my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a house made from cedar?”’

“So now, say this to my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has said: I took you from the pasture and from your work as a shepherd[j] to make you leader of my people Israel. I was with you wherever you went, and I defeated[k] all your enemies before you. Now I will make you as famous as the great men of the earth.[l] 10 I will establish a place for my people Israel and settle[m] them there; they will live there and not be disturbed[n] anymore. Violent men[o] will not oppress them again, as they did in the beginning 11 and during the time when I appointed judges to lead my people Israel. Instead, I will give you relief[p] from all your enemies. The Lord declares[q] to you that he himself[r] will build a dynastic house[s] for you. 12 When the time comes for you to die,[t] I will raise up your descendant, one of your own sons, to succeed you,[u] and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He will build a house for my name, and I will make his dynasty permanent.[v] 14 I will become his father and he will become my son. When he sins, I will correct him with the rod of men and with wounds inflicted by human beings.

Psalm 89:20-37

20 I have discovered David, my servant.
With my holy oil I have anointed him as king.[a]
21 My hand will support him,[b]
and my arm will strengthen him.
22 No enemy will be able to exact tribute[c] from him;[d]
a violent oppressor will not be able to humiliate him.[e]
23 I will crush his enemies before him;
I will strike down those who hate him.
24 He will experience my faithfulness and loyal love,[f]
and by my name he will win victories.[g]
25 I will place his hand over the sea,
his right hand over the rivers.[h]
26 He will call out to me,
‘You are my father,[i] my God, and the protector who delivers me.’[j]
27 I will appoint him to be my firstborn son,[k]
the most exalted of the earth’s kings.
28 I will always extend my loyal love to him,
and my covenant with him is secure.[l]
29 I will give him an eternal dynasty,[m]
and make his throne as enduring as the skies above.[n]
30 If his sons reject my law
and disobey my regulations,
31 if they break[o] my rules
and do not keep my commandments,
32 I will punish their rebellion by beating them with a club,[p]
their sin by inflicting them with bruises.[q]
33 But I will not remove[r] my loyal love from him,
nor be unfaithful to my promise.[s]
34 I will not break[t] my covenant
or go back on what I promised.[u]
35 Once and for all I have vowed by my own holiness,
I will never deceive[v] David.
36 His dynasty will last forever.[w]
His throne will endure before me, like the sun;[x]
37 it will remain stable, like the moon.[y]
His throne will endure like the skies.”[z] (Selah)

Ephesians 2:11-22

New Life Corporately

11 Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh—who are called “uncircumcision” by the so-called “circumcision” that is performed on the body[a] by human hands— 12 that you were at that time without the Messiah,[b] alienated from the citizenship of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise,[c] having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who used to be far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.[d] 14 For he is our peace, the one who made both groups into one[e] and who destroyed the middle wall of partition, the hostility, 15 when he nullified[f] in his flesh the law of commandments in decrees. He did this to create in himself one new man[g] out of two,[h] thus making peace, 16 and to reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by which the hostility has been killed.[i] 17 And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near, 18 so that[j] through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer foreigners and noncitizens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household, 20 because you have been built[k] on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,[l] with Christ Jesus himself as[m] the cornerstone.[n] 21 In him[o] the whole building,[p] being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

Mark 6:30-34

The Feeding of the Five Thousand

30 Then[a] the apostles gathered around Jesus and told him everything they had done and taught. 31 He said to them, “Come with me privately to an isolated place and rest a while” (for many were coming and going, and there was no time to eat). 32 So they went away by themselves in a boat[b] to some remote place. 33 But many saw them leaving and recognized them, and they hurried on foot[c] from all the towns[d] and arrived there ahead of them.[e] 34 As Jesus[f] came ashore[g] he saw the large crowd and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So[h] he taught them many things.

Mark 6:53-56

Healing the Sick

53 After they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret[a] and anchored there. 54 As they got out of the boat, people immediately recognized Jesus.[b] 55 They ran through that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever he was rumored to be.[c] 56 And wherever he would go—into villages, towns, or countryside—they would place the sick in the marketplaces,[d] and would ask him if[e] they could just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
