God Calls Moses at the Burning Bush

Now Moses was pasturing the flock of (A)Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the [a]west side of the wilderness and came to (B)Horeb, the (C)mountain of God. (D)And the angel of [b]Yahweh appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of the (E)bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed. So Moses said, “[c](F)I must turn aside now and see this [d]marvelous sight. Why is the bush not burned up?” And Yahweh saw that he turned aside to look, so (G)God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Do not come near here. (H)Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” He said also, “(I)I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” (J)Then Moses hid his face, for he was (K)afraid to look at God.

And Yahweh said, “I have surely (L)seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sufferings. So I have come down (M)to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up from that land to a (N)good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of (O)the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. So now, behold, (P)the cry of the sons of Israel has come to Me; and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 So now, come and I will send you to Pharaoh, (Q)and so you shall bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.” 11 But Moses said to God, “(R)Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?” 12 And He said, “Certainly (S)I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: (T)when you have brought the people out of Egypt, (U)you shall [e]serve God at this mountain.”

13 Then Moses said to God, “Behold, I am about to come to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ And they will say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?” 14 And God said to Moses, “[f](V)I AM WHO [g]I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘[h]I AM has sent me to you.’” 15 And God furthermore said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘(W)Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is My (X)memorial-name from generation to generation. 16 Go and (Y)gather the elders of Israel together and say to them, ‘(Z)Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, “[i](AA)I indeed care about you and what has been done to you in Egypt. 17 So (AB)I said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of (AC)the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite, to a land (AD)flowing with milk and honey.”’ 18 (AE)And they will listen to your voice; and (AF)you with the elders of Israel will come to the king of Egypt, and you all will say to him, ‘Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. So now, please, let us go a (AG)three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to Yahweh our God.’ 19 But I know that the king of Egypt (AH)will not give you permission to go, (AI)except by a strong hand. 20 So I will stretch out (AJ)My hand and strike Egypt with all My (AK)wondrous deeds which I shall do in the midst of it; and (AL)after that he will let you go. 21 And I will give this people (AM)favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and it shall be that when you go, you will not go empty. 22 But every woman (AN)shall ask of her neighbor and of the woman who lives in her house, for articles of silver and articles of gold, and clothing; and you will put them on your sons and daughters. Thus you will (AO)plunder the Egyptians.”

Luke 6

Lord of the Sabbath

(A)Now it happened that on a Sabbath He was passing through some grainfields, and His disciples (B)were picking and eating the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. But some of the Pharisees said, “Why do you do what (C)is not lawful on the Sabbath?” And Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you never read (D)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the [a]consecrated bread which (E)is not lawful for any to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?” And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

Jesus Heals a Man on the Sabbath

(F)Now it happened that on another Sabbath He entered (G)the synagogue and was teaching; and there was a man there [b]whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and the Pharisees (H)were watching Him closely to see if He heals on the Sabbath, so that they might find reason to accuse Him. But He (I)knew [c]what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and [d]come forward!” And he stood up and [e]came forward. And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to destroy it?” 10 And after (J)looking around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand!” And he did so, and his hand was restored. 11 But they themselves were filled with [f]rage, and were discussing together what they might do to Jesus.

Jesus Appoints the Twelve

12 Now it happened that [g]at this time He went off to (K)the mountain to (L)pray, and He was spending the whole night in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, (M)He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as (N)apostles: 14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew; 15 and (O)Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot; 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

17 And Jesus (P)came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was (Q)a large crowd of His disciples, and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of (R)Tyre and Sidon, 18 who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were being cured. 19 And all the crowd was trying to (S)touch Him, for (T)power was coming from Him and healing them all.

The Beatitudes

20 And turning His gaze toward His disciples, He began to say,

(U)Blessed are the poor, for (V)yours is the kingdom of God.
21 Blessed are those who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied.
Blessed are those who cry now, for you shall laugh.
22 (W)Blessed are you when men hate you, and (X)exclude you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man.

23 Be glad in that day and (Y)leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For (Z)their fathers were doing the same things to the prophets.

Jesus Pronounces Woes

24 But woe to (AA)you who are rich, for (AB)you are receiving your comfort in full.
25 Woe to you who [h]are well-fed now, for you shall be hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and cry.
26 Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers were doing the same things to the (AC)false prophets.

Love Your Enemies

27 “But I say to you who hear, (AD)love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, (AE)pray for those who disparage you. 29 (AF)Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your garment, do not withhold your [i]tunic from him either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back. 31 And [j](AG)treat others the same way you want [k]them to treat you. 32 (AH)And if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 (AI)And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount. 35 But (AJ)love your enemies, and do good, and lend, [l]expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be (AK)sons of (AL)the Most High; for He Himself is kind to the ungrateful and evil. 36 [m]Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Do Not Judge

37 (AM)And do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; [n](AN)pardon, and you will be [o]pardoned. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. They will [p]pour (AO)into your lap a (AP)good measure—pressed down, shaken together, running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”

39 And He also spoke a parable to them: (AQ)Can a blind man guide a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 (AR)A [q]student is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will [r]be like his teacher. 41 And why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye. 43 (AS)For there is no good tree which produces bad fruit, nor, [s]on the other hand, a bad tree which produces good fruit. 44 (AT)For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a bramble bush. 45 (AU)The good man out of the good [t]treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil. (AV)For his mouth speaks from the abundance of his heart.

Build Your House on the Rock

46 (AW)Now why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 (AX)Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug and went deep, and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the river burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who heard and did not do accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the river burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Job 20

Zophar Says the Joy of the Wicked Is Short

20 Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said,

“Therefore my disquieting thoughts make me [a]respond,
Even because of my haste within me.
I listened to (A)the discipline which dishonors me,
And the spirit of my understanding makes me answer.
Do you know this from (B)of old,
From the establishment of man on earth,
That the (C)shouts of joy of the wicked are short,
And (D)the gladness of the godless momentary?
Though his loftiness (E)goes up to the heavens,
And his head touches the clouds,
He (F)perishes forever like his refuse;
Those who have seen him (G)will say, ‘Where is he?’
He flies away like a (H)dream, and they cannot find him;
Even like a vision of the night he is (I)chased away.
The (J)eye which saw him sees him no longer,
And (K)his place no longer beholds him.
10 His (L)sons seek the favor of the poor,
And his hands (M)give back his wealth.
11 His (N)bones are full of his youthful vigor,
But it lies down with him [b]in the dust.

12 “Though (O)evil is sweet in his mouth
And he hides it under his tongue,
13 Though he [c]desires it and will not forsake it,
And holds it (P)to his palate,
14 Yet his food in his stomach is changed
To the [d]venom of cobras within him.
15 He swallows up wealth,
But will (Q)vomit it up;
God will expel it from his belly.
16 He sucks (R)the poison of cobras;
The viper’s tongue kills him.
17 He does not look at (S)the streams,
The rivers flowing with honey and curds.
18 He (T)returns what he has attained
And cannot swallow it;
As to the wealth of his trading,
He cannot even enjoy it.
19 For he has (U)crushed and forsaken the poor;
He has seized a house which he has not built.

20 “Because he knew no ease within his belly,
In his covetousness, he does (V)not let anything escape.
21 Nothing remains [e]for him to devour;
Therefore (W)his prosperity does not endure.
22 In the fullness of his plenty he will be confined;
The (X)hand of everyone who is troubled will come against him.
23 So it will be that he (Y)fills his belly,
And God will send His burning anger on him
And will (Z)rain it on him [f]while he is eating.
24 He may (AA)flee from the iron weapon,
But the bronze bow will pierce him.
25 It is drawn forth and comes out of his back,
Even the glittering point from (AB)his gall;
(AC)Bouts of dread come upon him.
26 Complete (AD)darkness is held in reserve for his treasures;
A (AE)fire unfanned will devour him;
It will consume the survivor in his tent.
27 The (AF)heavens will reveal his iniquity,
And the earth will rise up against him.
28 The (AG)increase of his house will depart;
His possessions will flow away (AH)in the day of His anger.
29 This is the wicked man’s (AI)portion from God,
Even the inheritance decreed to him by God.”

1 Corinthians 7

Concerning Marriage and Singleness

Now concerning the things about which you wrote, it is (A)good for a man not to touch a woman. But because of sexual immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband. The husband must [a]fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. (B)Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and [b]come together again so that (C)Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. But this I say as a concession, (D)not as a command. [c]Yet I wish that all men were (E)even as I myself am. However, (F)each man has his own gift from God, one this way, and another that.

But I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is (G)good for them if they remain (H)even as I. But if they do not have self-control, (I)let them marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

10 But to the married I give instructions, (J)not I, but the Lord, that the wife should not [d]leave her husband 11 (but if she does leave, she must remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband should not [e]divorce his wife.

12 But to the rest (K)I say, not the Lord, that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he must not [f]divorce her. 13 And a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not divorce her husband. 14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through [g]her believing husband. For otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are (L)holy. 15 Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave. The brother or the sister is not enslaved in such cases, but God has called [h]us [i](M)to peace. 16 For how do you know, O wife, whether you will (N)save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?

17 Only, (O)as the Lord has assigned to each one, as God has called each, in this manner let him walk. And (P)so I direct in (Q)all the churches. 18 Was any man called when he was already circumcised? He is not to become uncircumcised. Has anyone been called in uncircumcision? (R)He is not to be circumcised. 19 (S)Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but what matters is (T)the keeping of the commandments of God. 20 (U)Each man must remain in that [j]condition in which he was called.

21 Were you called while a slave? [k]Do not worry about it. But if you are able also to become free, rather [l]do that. 22 For he who was called in the Lord while a slave, is (V)the Lord’s freedman. Likewise he who was called while free, is (W)Christ’s slave. 23 (X)You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men. 24 Brothers, (Y)each one is to remain with God in that condition in which he was called.

25 Now concerning virgins I have (Z)no command of the Lord, but I give an opinion as one who [m](AA)by the mercy of the Lord is trustworthy. 26 I think then that this is good because of the [n]present (AB)distress, that (AC)it is good for a man [o]to remain as he is. 27 Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be released. Are you released from a wife? Do not seek a wife. 28 But if you marry, you have not sinned. And if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Yet such will have [p]trouble in this life, and I am trying to spare you. 29 But this I say, brothers, (AD)the time has been shortened, so that from now on those who have wives should be as though they had none; 30 and those who cry, as though they did not cry; and those who rejoice, as though they did not rejoice; and those who buy, as though they did not possess; 31 and those who use the world, as though they did not (AE)make full use of it. For (AF)the form of this world is passing away.

32 But I want you to be free from concern. One who is (AG)unmarried is concerned about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord. 33 But one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, 34 and his interests have been divided. The woman who is unmarried, and the virgin, is concerned about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and spirit. But one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how she may please her husband. 35 Now this I say for your own benefit, not to put a restraint upon you, but [q]to promote propriety and undistracted devotion to the Lord.

36 But if any man thinks that he is acting unbecomingly toward his virgin daughter, if she is past her youth, and if it must be so, let him do what he wishes, he does not sin; let [r]her marry. 37 But he who stands firm in his heart, [s]being under no compulsion, but has authority [t]over his own will, and has decided this in his own heart, to keep his own virgin daughter, he will do well. 38 So then both he who gives his own virgin daughter in marriage does well, and he who does not give her in marriage will do better.

39 (AH)A wife is bound as long as her husband lives; but if her husband has [u]fallen asleep, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only (AI)in the Lord. 40 But (AJ)in my opinion she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think that I also have the Spirit of God.
