Bible in 90 Days
Bildad’s First Speech to Job[a]
8 Then Bildad the Shuhite spoke up and said:
2 “How long will you speak these things,[b]
seeing[c] that the words of your mouth
are like a great[d] wind?[e]
3 Does God pervert[f] justice?[g]
Or does the Almighty pervert[h] what is right?
4 If[i] your children sinned against him,
he gave them over[j] to the penalty[k] of their sin.
5 But[l] if you will look[m] to God,
and make your supplication[n] to the Almighty,
6 if you become[o] pure[p] and upright,[q]
even now he will rouse himself[r] for you,
and will restore[s] your righteous home.[t]
7 Your beginning[u] will seem so small,
since your future will flourish.[v]
8 “For inquire now of the former[w] generation,
and pay attention[x] to the findings[y]
of their ancestors;[z]
9 For we were born yesterday[aa] and do not have knowledge,
since our days on earth are but a shadow.[ab]
10 Will they not[ac] instruct you and[ad] speak to you,
and bring forth words[ae]
from their understanding?[af]
11 Can the papyrus plant grow tall[ag] where there is no marsh?
Can reeds flourish[ah] without water?
12 While they are still beginning to flower[ai]
and not ripe for cutting,[aj]
they can wither away[ak]
faster than[al] any grass.[am]
13 Such is the destiny[an] of all who forget God;
the hope of the godless[ao] perishes,
14 whose[ap] trust[aq] is in something futile,[ar]
whose security is a spider’s web.[as]
15 He leans against his house but it does not hold up,[at]
he takes hold[au] of it but it does not stand.
16 He is a well-watered plant[av] in[aw] the sun,
its shoots spread[ax] over its garden.[ay]
17 It wraps its roots around a heap of stones[az]
and it looks[ba] for a place among stones.[bb]
18 If he is uprooted[bc] from his place,
then that place[bd] will disown him, saying,[be]
‘I have never seen you!’
19 Indeed, this is the joy of his way,[bf]
and out of the earth[bg] others spring up.[bh]
20 “Surely, God does not reject a blameless man,[bi]
nor does he grasp the hand[bj]
of the evildoers.
21 He will yet[bk] fill your mouth with laughter,[bl]
and your lips with gladness.
22 Those who hate you[bm] will be clothed with shame,[bn]
and the tent of the wicked will be no more.”
Job’s Reply to Bildad[bo]
9 Then Job answered:
2 “Truly,[bp] I know that this is so.
But how[bq] can a human[br] be just before[bs] God?[bt]
3 If someone wishes[bu] to contend[bv] with him,
he cannot answer[bw] him one time in a thousand.
4 He is wise in heart[bx] and mighty[by] in strength[bz]—
who has resisted[ca] him and remained safe?[cb]
5 He who removes mountains suddenly,[cc]
who overturns them in his anger,[cd]
6 he who shakes the earth out of its place[ce]
so that its pillars tremble,[cf]
7 he who commands the sun, and[cg] it does not shine[ch]
and seals up[ci] the stars,
8 he alone spreads out the heavens,
and treads[cj] on the waves of the sea.[ck]
9 He makes the Bear,[cl] Orion,[cm] and the Pleiades,[cn]
and the constellations of the southern sky;[co]
10 he does great and unsearchable things,[cp]
and wonderful things without number.
11 If[cq] he passes by me, I cannot see[cr] him,[cs]
if he goes by, I cannot perceive him.[ct]
12 If he snatches away,[cu] who can turn him back?[cv]
Who dares to say to him, ‘What are you doing?’
13 God does not restrain his anger;[cw]
under him the helpers of Rahab[cx] lie crushed.[cy]
The Impossibility of Facing God in Court
14 “How much less,[cz] then, can I answer him[da]
and choose my words[db] to argue[dc] with[dd] him.[de]
15 Although[df] I am innocent,[dg]
I could not answer him;[dh]
I could only plead[di] with my judge[dj] for mercy.
16 If I summoned him, and he answered me,[dk]
I would not believe[dl]
that he would be listening to my voice—
17 he who[dm] crushes[dn] me with a tempest,
and multiplies my wounds for no reason.[do]
18 He does not allow[dp] me to recover[dq] my breath,
for he fills[dr] me with bitterness.
19 If it is a matter of strength,[ds]
most certainly[dt] he is the strong one!
And if it is a matter of justice,
he will say, ‘Who will summon me?’[du]
20 Although I am innocent,[dv]
my mouth[dw] would condemn me,[dx]
although I am blameless,
it would declare me perverse.[dy]
21 I am blameless.[dz] I do not know myself.[ea]
I despise my life.
Accusation of God’s Justice
22 “It is all one![eb] That is why I say,[ec]
‘He destroys the blameless and the guilty.’
23 If a scourge brings sudden death,[ed]
he mocks[ee] at the despair[ef] of the innocent.[eg]
24 If a land[eh] has been given
into the hand of a wicked man,[ei]
he covers[ej] the faces of its judges;[ek]
if it is not he, then who is it?[el]
Renewed Complaint
25 “My days[em] are swifter than a runner,[en]
they speed by without seeing happiness.
26 They glide by[eo] like reed[ep] boats,
like an eagle that swoops[eq] down on its prey.[er]
27 If I say,[es] ‘I will[et] forget my complaint,
I will change my expression[eu] and be cheerful,’[ev]
28 I dread[ew] all my sufferings,[ex]
for[ey] I know that you do not hold me blameless.[ez]
29 If I am guilty,[fa]
why then[fb] weary myself[fc] in vain?[fd]
30 If I wash myself with snow-melt water,[fe]
and make my hands clean with lye,[ff]
31 then you plunge me into a slimy pit[fg]
and my own clothes abhor me.
32 For he[fh] is not a human being like I am,
that[fi] I might answer him,
that we might come[fj] together in judgment.
33 Nor is there an arbiter[fk] between us,
who[fl] might lay[fm] his hand on us both,[fn]
34 who[fo] would take his[fp] rod[fq] away from me
so that his terror[fr] would not make me afraid.
35 Then[fs] would I speak and not fear him,
but it is not so with me.[ft]
An Appeal for Revelation
10 “I[fu] am weary[fv] of my life;
I will complain freely without restraint;[fw]
I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.
2 I will say to God, ‘Do not condemn[fx] me;
tell me[fy] why you are contending[fz] with me.’
3 Is it good for you[ga] to oppress,[gb]
to[gc] despise the work of your hands,
while[gd] you smile[ge]
on the schemes of the wicked?
Motivations of God
4 “Do you have eyes of flesh,[gf]
or do you see[gg] as a human being sees?[gh]
5 Are your days like the days of a mortal,
or your years like the years[gi] of a mortal,
6 that[gj] you must search out[gk] my iniquity,
and inquire about my sin,
7 although you know[gl] that I am not guilty,
and that there is no one who can deliver[gm]
out of your hand?
Contradictions in God’s Dealings
8 “Your hands have shaped[gn] me and made me,
but[go] now you destroy me completely.[gp]
9 Remember that you have made me as with[gq] the clay;
will[gr] you return me to dust?
10 Did you not pour[gs] me out like milk,
and curdle[gt] me like cheese?[gu]
11 You clothed[gv] me with skin and flesh
and knit me together[gw] with bones and sinews.
12 You gave me[gx] life and favor,[gy]
and your intervention[gz] watched over my spirit.
13 “But these things[ha] you have concealed in your heart;
I know that this[hb] is with you:[hc]
14 If I sinned, then you would watch me
and you would not acquit me of my iniquity.
15 If I am guilty,[hd] woe[he] to me,
and if I am innocent, I cannot lift my head;[hf]
I am full of shame,[hg]
and satiated with my affliction.[hh]
16 If I lift myself up,[hi]
you hunt me as a fierce lion,[hj]
and again[hk] you display your power[hl] against me.
17 You bring new witnesses[hm] against me,
and increase your anger against me;
relief troops[hn] come against me.
An Appeal for Relief
18 “Why then did you bring me out from the womb?
I should have died[ho]
and no eye would have seen me!
19 I should have been as though I had never existed;[hp]
I should have been carried
right from the womb to the grave!
20 Are not my days few?[hq]
Cease,[hr] then, and leave[hs] me alone[ht]
that I may find a little comfort,[hu]
21 before I depart, never to return,[hv]
to the land of darkness
and the deepest shadow,[hw]
22 to the land of utter darkness,
like the deepest darkness,
and the deepest shadow and disorder,[hx]
where even the light[hy] is like darkness.”[hz]
Zophar’s First Speech to Job[ia]
11 Then Zophar the Naamathite spoke up and said:
2 “Should not this[ib] abundance of words be answered,[ic]
or should this[id] talkative man[ie]
be vindicated?[if]
3 Should people remain silent[ig] at your idle talk,[ih]
and should no one rebuke[ii] you when you mock?[ij]
4 For you have said, ‘My teaching[ik] is flawless,
and I am pure in your sight.’
5 But if only God would speak,[il]
if only he would open his lips against you,[im]
6 and reveal to you the secrets of wisdom—
for true wisdom has two sides[in]—
so that you would know[io]
that God has forgiven some of your sins.[ip]
7 “Can you discover[iq] the essence[ir] of God?
Can you find out[is] the perfection of the Almighty?[it]
8 It is higher[iu] than the heavens—what can you do?
It is deeper than Sheol[iv]—what can you know?
9 Its measure is longer than the earth,
and broader than the sea.
10 If he comes by[iw] and confines[ix] you[iy]
and convenes a court,[iz]
then who can prevent[ja] him?
11 For he[jb] knows deceitful[jc] men;
when he sees evil, will he not[jd] consider it?[je]
12 But an empty man will become wise,
when a wild donkey’s colt is born a human being.[jf]
13 “As for you,[jg] if you prove faithful,[jh]
and if[ji] you stretch out your hands toward him,[jj]
14 if[jk] iniquity is in your hand—put it far away,[jl]
and do not let evil reside in your tents.
15 For[jm] then you will lift up your face
without[jn] blemish;[jo]
you will be securely established[jp]
and will not fear.
16 For you[jq] will forget your trouble;[jr]
you will remember it
like water that[js] has flowed away.
17 And life[jt] will be brighter[ju] than the noonday;
though there be darkness,[jv]
it will be like the morning.
18 And you will be secure, because there is hope;
you will be protected[jw]
and will take your rest in safety.
19 You will lie down with[jx] no one to make you afraid,
and many will seek your favor.[jy]
20 But the eyes of the wicked fail,[jz]
and escape[ka] eludes them;
their one hope[kb] is to breathe their last.”[kc]
Job’s Reply to Zophar[kd]
12 Then Job answered:
2 “Without a doubt you are the people,[ke]
and wisdom will die with you.[kf]
3 I also have understanding[kg] as well as you;
I am not inferior to you.[kh]
Who does not know such things as these?[ki]
4 I am[kj] a laughingstock[kk] to my friends,[kl]
I, who called on God and whom he answered[km]—
a righteous and blameless[kn] man
is a laughingstock!
5 For calamity,[ko] there is derision
(according to the ideas of the fortunate[kp])—
a fate[kq] for those whose feet slip.
6 But[kr] the tents of robbers are peaceful,
and those who provoke God are confident[ks]—
who carry their god in their hands.[kt]
Knowledge of God’s Wisdom[ku]
7 “But now, ask the animals and they[kv] will teach you,
or the birds of the sky and they will tell you.
8 Or speak[kw] to the earth[kx] and it will teach you,
or let the fish of the sea declare to you.
9 Which of all these[ky] does not know
that the hand of the Lord[kz] has done[la] this?
10 In his hand[lb] is the life[lc] of every creature
and the breath of all the human race.[ld]
11 Does not the ear test words,
as[le] the tongue[lf] tastes food?[lg]
12 Is not wisdom found among the aged?[lh]
Does not long life bring understanding?
13 “With God[li] are wisdom and power;
counsel and understanding are his.[lj]
14 If[lk] he tears down, it cannot be rebuilt;
if he imprisons a person, there is no escape.[ll]
15 If he holds back the waters, then they dry up;[lm]
if he releases them,[ln] they destroy[lo] the land.
16 With him are strength and prudence;[lp]
both the one who goes astray[lq]
and the one who misleads are his.
17 He[lr] leads[ls] counselors away stripped[lt]
and makes judges[lu] into fools.[lv]
18 He loosens[lw] the bonds[lx] of kings
and binds a loincloth[ly] around their waist.
19 He leads priests away stripped[lz]
and overthrows[ma] the potentates.[mb]
20 He deprives the trusted advisers[mc] of speech[md]
and takes away the discernment[me] of elders.
21 He pours contempt on noblemen
and disarms[mf] the powerful.[mg]
22 He reveals the deep things of darkness,
and brings deep shadows[mh] into the light.
23 He makes nations great,[mi] and destroys them;
he extends the boundaries of nations
and disperses[mj] them.[mk]
24 He deprives the leaders of the earth[ml]
of their understanding;[mm]
he makes them wander
in a trackless desert waste.[mn]
25 They grope about in darkness[mo] without light;
he makes them stagger[mp] like drunkards.
Job Pleads His Cause to God[mq]
13 “Indeed, my eyes have seen all this,[mr]
my ears have heard and understood it.
2 What you know,[ms] I[mt] know also;
I am not inferior[mu] to you!
3 But I wish to speak[mv] to the Almighty,[mw]
and I desire to argue[mx] my case[my] with God.
4 But you, however, are inventors of lies;[mz]
all of you are worthless physicians![na]
5 If only you would keep completely silent![nb]
For you, that would be wisdom.[nc]
6 “Listen now to my argument,[nd]
and be attentive to my lips’ contentions.[ne]
7 Will you speak wickedly[nf] on God’s behalf?[ng]
Will you speak deceitfully for him?
8 Will you show him partiality?[nh]
Will you argue the case[ni] for God?
9 Would it turn out well if he would examine[nj] you?
Or as one deceives[nk] a man would you deceive him?
10 He would certainly rebuke[nl] you
if you secretly[nm] showed partiality.
11 Would not his splendor[nn] terrify[no] you
and the fear he inspires[np] fall on you?
12 Your maxims[nq] are proverbs of ashes;[nr]
your defenses[ns] are defenses of clay.[nt]
13 “Refrain from talking[nu] with me so that[nv] I may speak;
then let come to me[nw] what may.[nx]
14 Why[ny] do I put myself in peril,[nz]
and take my life in my hands?
15 Even if he slays me, I will hope in him;[oa]
I will surely[ob] defend[oc] my ways to his face.
16 Moreover, this will become my deliverance,
for no godless person would come before him.[od]
17 Listen carefully[oe] to my words;
let your ears be attentive to my explanation.[of]
18 See now,[og] I have prepared[oh] my[oi] case;[oj]
I know that I am right.[ok]
19 Who[ol] will contend with me?
If anyone can, I will be silent and die.[om]
20 Only in two things spare me,[on] O God,[oo]
and then I will not hide from your face:
21 Remove[op] your hand[oq] far from me
and stop making me afraid with your terror.[or]
22 Then call,[os] and I will answer,
or I will speak, and you respond to me.
23 How many are my[ot] iniquities and sins?
Show me my transgression and my sin.[ou]
24 Why do you hide your face[ov]
and regard me as your enemy?
25 Do you wish to torment[ow] a windblown[ox] leaf
and chase after dry chaff?[oy]
26 For you write down[oz] bitter things against me
and cause me to inherit the sins of my youth.[pa]
27 And you put my feet in the stocks[pb]
and you watch all my movements;[pc]
you put marks[pd] on the soles of my feet.
28 So I[pe] waste away like something rotten,[pf]
like a garment eaten by moths.
The Brevity of Life
14 “Man, born of woman,[pg]
lives but a few days,[ph] and they are full of trouble.[pi]
2 He grows up[pj] like a flower and then withers away;[pk]
he flees like a shadow, and does not remain.[pl]
3 Do you fix your eye[pm] on such a one?[pn]
And do you bring me[po] before you for judgment?
4 Who can make[pp] a clean thing come from an unclean?[pq]
No one!
5 Since man’s days[pr] are determined,[ps]
the number of his months is under your control;[pt]
you have set his limit[pu] and he cannot pass it.
6 Look away from him and let him desist,[pv]
until he fulfills[pw] his time like a hired man.
The Inevitability of Death
7 “But there is hope for[px] a tree:[py]
If it is cut down, it will sprout again,
and its new shoots will not fail.
8 Although its roots may grow old[pz] in the ground
and its stump begins to die[qa] in the soil,[qb]
9 at the scent[qc] of water it will flourish[qd]
and put forth[qe] shoots like a new plant.
10 But man[qf] dies and is powerless;[qg]
he expires—and where is he?[qh]
11 As[qi] water disappears from the sea,[qj]
or a river drains away and dries up,
12 so man lies down and does not rise;
until the heavens are no more,[qk]
they[ql] will not awake
nor arise from their sleep.
The Possibility of Another Life
13 “O that[qm] you would hide me in Sheol,[qn]
and conceal me till your anger has passed![qo]
O that you would set me a time[qp]
and then remember me![qq]
14 If a man dies, will he live again?[qr]
All the days of my hard service[qs] I will wait[qt]
until my release comes.[qu]
15 You will call[qv] and I[qw]—I will answer you;
you will long for[qx] the creature you have made.[qy]
The Present Condition[qz]
16 “Surely now you count my steps;[ra]
then you would not mark[rb] my sin.[rc]
17 My offenses would be sealed up[rd] in a bag;[re]
you would cover over[rf] my sin.
18 But as[rg] a mountain falls away and crumbles,[rh]
and as a rock will be removed from its place,
19 as water wears away stones,
and torrents[ri] wash away the soil,[rj]
so you destroy man’s hope.[rk]
20 You overpower him once for all,[rl]
and he departs;
you change[rm] his appearance
and send him away.
21 If[rn] his sons are honored,[ro]
he does not know it;[rp]
if they are brought low,
he does not see[rq] it.
22 His flesh only has pain for him,[rr]
and he mourns for himself.”[rs]
Eliphaz’s Second Speech[rt]
15 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:
2 “Does a wise man answer with blustery knowledge,[ru]
or fill his belly[rv] with the east wind?[rw]
3 Does he argue[rx] with useless[ry] talk,
with words that have no value in them?
4 But you even break off[rz] piety,[sa]
and hinder[sb] meditation[sc] before God.
5 Your sin inspires[sd] your mouth;
you choose the language[se] of the crafty.[sf]
6 Your own mouth condemns[sg] you, not I;
your own lips testify against[sh] you.
7 “Were you the first man ever born?
Were you brought forth before the hills?
8 Do you listen in on God’s secret council?[si]
Do you limit[sj] wisdom to yourself?
9 What do you know that we don’t know?
What do you understand that we don’t understand?[sk]
10 The gray-haired[sl] and the aged are on our side,[sm]
men far older than your father.[sn]
11 Are God’s consolations[so] too trivial for you,[sp]
or a word spoken[sq] in gentleness to you?
12 Why[sr] has your heart carried you away,[ss]
and why do your eyes flash,[st]
13 when you turn your rage[su] against God
and allow such words to escape[sv] from your mouth?
14 What is man that he should be pure,
or one born of woman, that he should be righteous?
15 If God[sw] places no trust in his holy ones,[sx]
if even the heavens[sy] are not pure in his eyes,
16 how much less man, who is abominable and corrupt,[sz]
who drinks in evil like water![ta]
17 “I will explain to you;
listen to me,
and what[tb] I have seen, I will declare,[tc]
18 what wise men declare,
hiding nothing,
from the tradition of[td] their ancestors,[te]
19 to whom alone the land was given
when no foreigner passed among them.[tf]
20 All his days[tg] the wicked man suffers torment,[th]
throughout the number of the years
that[ti] are stored up for the tyrant.[tj]
21 Terrifying sounds fill[tk] his ears;
in a time of peace marauders[tl] attack him.
22 He does not expect[tm] to escape from darkness;[tn]
he is marked for the sword;[to]
23 he wanders about—food for vultures[tp]—
he knows that the day of darkness is at hand.[tq]
24 Distress and anguish[tr] terrify him;
they prevail against him
like a king ready to launch an attack,[ts]
25 for he stretches out his hand against God,[tt]
and vaunts himself[tu] against the Almighty,
26 defiantly charging against him[tv]
with a thick, strong shield![tw]
27 Because he covered his face with fat,[tx]
and made[ty] his hips bulge with fat,[tz]
28 he lived in ruined towns[ua]
and in houses where[ub] no one lives,
where they are ready to crumble into heaps.[uc]
29 He will not grow rich,
and his wealth will not endure,
nor will his possessions[ud] spread over the land.
30 He will not escape the darkness;[ue]
a flame will wither his shoots
and he will depart
by the breath of God’s mouth.[uf]
31 Let him not trust in what is worthless,[ug]
deceiving himself;
for worthlessness will be his reward.[uh]
32 Before his time[ui] he will be paid in full,[uj]
and his branches will not flourish.[uk]
33 Like a vine he will let his sour grapes fall,[ul]
and like an olive tree
he will shed his blossoms.[um]
34 For the company of the godless is barren,[un]
and fire[uo] consumes the tents of those who accept bribes.[up]
35 They conceive[uq] trouble and bring forth evil;
their belly[ur] prepares deception.”
Job’s Reply to Eliphaz[us]
16 Then Job replied:
2 “I have heard many things like these before.
What miserable comforters[ut] are you all!
3 Will[uu] there be an end to your[uv] windy words?[uw]
Or what provokes[ux] you that you answer?[uy]
4 I also could speak[uz] like you,
if[va] you were in my place;
I could pile up[vb] words against you
and I could shake my head at you.[vc]
5 But[vd] I would strengthen[ve] you with my words;[vf]
comfort from my lips would bring[vg] you relief.
Abandonment by God and Man
6 “But[vh] if I speak, my pain is not relieved,[vi]
and if I refrain from speaking,
how much[vj] of it goes away?
7 Surely now he[vk] has worn me out,
you have devastated my entire household.
8 You have seized me,[vl]
and it[vm] has become a witness;
my leanness[vn] has risen up against me
and testifies against me.
9 His[vo] anger has torn me[vp] and persecuted[vq] me;
he has gnashed at me with his teeth;
my adversary locks[vr] his eyes on me.
10 People[vs] have opened their mouths against me,
they have struck my cheek in scorn;[vt]
they unite[vu] together against me.
11 God abandons me to evil men,[vv]
and throws[vw] me into the hands of wicked men.
12 I was in peace, and he has shattered me.[vx]
He has seized me by the neck and crushed me.[vy]
He has made me his target;
13 his archers[vz] surround me.
Without pity[wa] he pierces[wb] my kidneys
and pours out my gall[wc] on the ground.
14 He breaks through against me, time and time again;[wd]
he rushes[we] against me like a warrior.
15 I have sewed sackcloth on my skin,[wf]
and buried[wg] my horn[wh] in the dust;
16 my face is reddened[wi] because of weeping,[wj]
and on my eyelids there is a deep darkness,[wk]
17 although[wl] there is no violence in my hands
and my prayer is pure.
An Appeal to God as Witness
18 “O earth, do not cover my blood,[wm]
nor let there be a secret[wn] place for my cry.
19 Even now my witness[wo] is in heaven;
my advocate[wp] is on high.
20 My intercessor is my friend[wq]
as my eyes pour out tears[wr] to God;
21 and[ws] he contends with God on behalf of man
as a man[wt] pleads[wu] for his friend.
22 For the years that lie ahead are few,[wv]
and then I will go on the way of no return.[ww]
17 My spirit is broken,[wx]
my days have faded out,[wy]
the grave[wz] awaits me.
2 Surely mockery[xa] is with me;[xb]
my eyes must dwell on their hostility.[xc]
3 Set my pledge[xd] beside you.
Who else will put up security for me?[xe]
4 Because[xf] you have closed their[xg] minds to understanding,
therefore you will not exalt them.[xh]
5 If a man denounces his friends for personal gain,[xi]
the eyes of his children will fail.
6 He has made me[xj] a byword[xk] to people,
I am the one in whose face they spit.[xl]
7 My eyes have grown dim[xm] with grief;
my whole frame[xn] is but a shadow.
8 Upright men are appalled[xo] at this;
the innocent man is troubled[xp] with the godless.
9 But the righteous man holds to his way,
and the one with clean hands grows stronger.[xq]
Anticipation of Death
10 “But turn, all of you,[xr] and come[xs] now![xt]
I will not find a wise man among you.
11 My days have passed, my plans[xu] are shattered,
even[xv] the desires[xw] of my heart.
12 These men[xx] change[xy] night into day;
they say,[xz] ‘The light is near
in the face of darkness.’[ya]
13 If[yb] I hope for the grave to be my home,
if I spread out my bed in darkness,
14 if I cry out[yc] to corruption,[yd] ‘You are my father,’
and to the worm, ‘My mother,’ or ‘My sister,’
15 where then[ye] is my hope?
And my hope,[yf] who sees it?
16 Will[yg] it[yh] go down to the barred gates[yi] of death?
Will[yj] we descend[yk] together into the dust?”
Bildad’s Second Speech[yl]
18 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered:
2 “How long until you[ym] make an end of words?[yn]
You must consider,[yo] and then[yp] we can talk.
3 Why should we be regarded as beasts,
and considered stupid[yq] in your sight?
4 You who tear yourself[yr] to pieces in your anger,
will the earth be abandoned[ys] for your sake?
Or will a rock be moved from its place?[yt]
5 “Yes,[yu] the lamp[yv] of the wicked is extinguished;
his flame of fire[yw] does not shine.
6 The light in his tent grows dark;
his lamp above him is extinguished.[yx]
7 His vigorous steps[yy] are restricted,[yz]
and his own counsel throws him down.[za]
8 For he has been thrown into a net by his feet[zb]
and he wanders into a mesh.[zc]
9 A trap[zd] seizes him by the heel;
a snare[ze] grips him.
10 A rope is hidden for him[zf] on the ground
and a trap for him[zg] lies on the path.
11 Terrors[zh] frighten him on all sides
and dog[zi] his every step.
12 Calamity is[zj] hungry for him,[zk]
and misfortune is ready at his side.[zl]
13 It eats away parts of his skin;[zm]
the most terrible death[zn] devours his limbs.
14 He is dragged from the security of his tent,[zo]
and marched off[zp] to the king of terrors.[zq]
15 Fire resides in his tent;[zr]
over his residence burning sulfur is scattered.
16 Below his roots dry up,
and his branches wither above.
17 His memory perishes from the earth,
he has no name in the land.[zs]
18 He is driven[zt] from light into darkness
and is banished from the world.
19 He has neither children nor descendants[zu] among his people,
no survivor in those places he once stayed.[zv]
20 People of the west[zw] are appalled at his fate;[zx]
people of the east are seized with horror,[zy] saying,[zz]
21 ‘Surely such is the residence[aaa] of an evil man;
and this is the place of one who has not known God.’”[aab]
Job’s Reply to Bildad[aac]
19 Then Job answered:
2 “How long will you torment me[aad]
and crush[aae] me with your words?[aaf]
3 These ten times[aag] you have been reproaching me;[aah]
you are not ashamed to attack me.[aai]
4 But even if it were[aaj] true that I have erred,[aak]
my error[aal] remains solely my concern!
5 If indeed[aam] you would exalt yourselves[aan] above me
and plead my disgrace against me,[aao]
6 know[aap] then that God has wronged me[aaq]
and encircled[aar] me with his net.[aas]
Job’s Abandonment and Affliction
7 “If[aat] I cry out,[aau] ‘Violence!’[aav]
I receive no answer;[aaw]
I cry for help,
but there is no justice.
8 He has blocked[aax] my way so I cannot pass,
and has set darkness[aay] over my paths.
9 He has stripped me of my honor
and has taken the crown off my head.[aaz]
10 He tears me down[aba] on every side until I perish;[abb]
he uproots[abc] my hope[abd] like an uprooted[abe] tree.
11 Thus[abf] his anger burns against me,
and he considers me among his enemies.[abg]
12 His troops[abh] advance together;
they throw up[abi] a siege ramp against me,
and they camp around my tent.
Job’s Forsaken State
13 “He has put my relatives[abj] far from me;
my acquaintances only[abk] turn away from me.
14 My kinsmen have failed me;
my friends[abl] have forgotten me.[abm]
15 My guests[abn] and my servant girls
consider[abo] me a stranger;
I am a foreigner[abp] in their eyes.
16 I summon[abq] my servant, but he does not respond,
even though I implore[abr] him with my own mouth.
17 My breath is repulsive[abs] to my wife;
I am loathsome[abt] to my brothers.[abu]
18 Even youngsters have scorned me;
when I get up,[abv] they scoff at me.[abw]
19 All my closest friends[abx] detest me;
and those whom[aby] I love have turned against me.[abz]
20 My bones stick to my skin and my flesh;[aca]
I have escaped[acb] alive[acc] with only the skin of my teeth.
21 Have pity on me, my friends, have pity on me,
for the hand of God has struck me.
22 Why do you pursue me like God does?[acd]
Will you never be satiated with my flesh?[ace]
Job’s Assurance of Vindication
23 “O that[acf] my words were written down!
O that they were written on a scroll![acg]
24 O that with an iron chisel and with lead[ach]
they were engraved in a rock forever!
25 As for me, I know that my Redeemer[aci] lives,
and that as the last[acj]
he will stand upon the earth.[ack]
26 And after my skin has been destroyed,[acl]
yet in my flesh[acm] I will see God,[acn]
27 whom I will see for myself,[aco]
and whom my own eyes will behold,
and not another.[acp]
My heart[acq] grows faint within me.[acr]
28 If you say, ‘How we will pursue him,
since the root of the trouble is found in him!’[acs]
29 Fear the sword yourselves,
for wrath[act] brings the punishment[acu] by the sword,
so that you may know
that there is judgment.”[acv]
Zophar’s Second Speech[acw]
20 Then Zophar the Naamathite answered:
2 “This is why[acx] my troubled thoughts bring me back[acy]—
because of my feelings[acz] within me.
3 When[ada] I hear a reproof that dishonors[adb] me,
then my understanding[adc] prompts me to answer.[add]
4 “Surely you know[ade] that it has been from old,
ever since humankind was placed[adf] on the earth,
5 that the elation of the wicked is brief,[adg]
the joy of the godless[adh] lasts but a moment.[adi]
6 Even though his stature[adj] reaches to the heavens
and his head touches the clouds,
7 he will perish forever, like his own excrement;[adk]
those who used to see him will say, ‘Where is he?’
8 Like a dream he flies away, never again to be found,[adl]
and like a vision of the night he is put to flight.
9 People[adm] who had seen him will not see him again,
and the place where he was
will recognize him no longer.
10 His sons must recompense[adn] the poor;
his own hands[ado] must return his wealth.
11 His bones[adp] were full of his youthful vigor,[adq]
but that vigor will lie down with him in the dust.
12 “If[adr] evil is sweet in his mouth
and he hides it under his tongue,[ads]
13 if he retains it for himself
and does not let it go,
and holds it fast in his mouth,[adt]
14 his food is turned sour[adu] in his stomach;[adv]
it becomes the venom of serpents[adw] within him.
15 The wealth that he consumed[adx] he vomits up,
God will make him throw it out[ady] of his stomach.
16 He sucks the poison[adz] of serpents;[aea]
the fangs[aeb] of a viper[aec] kill him.
17 He will not look on the streams,[aed]
the rivers that are the torrents[aee]
of honey and butter.[aef]
18 He gives back the ill-gotten gain[aeg]
without assimilating it;[aeh]
he will not enjoy the wealth from his commerce.[aei]
19 For he has oppressed the poor and abandoned them;[aej]
he has seized a house which he did not build.[aek]
20 For he knows no satisfaction in his appetite;[ael]
he does not let anything he desires[aem] escape.[aen]
21 “Nothing is left for him to devour;[aeo]
that is why his prosperity does not last.[aep]
22 In the fullness of his sufficiency,[aeq]
distress overtakes[aer] him.
The full force of misery will come upon him.[aes]
23 “While he is[aet] filling his belly,
God[aeu] sends his burning anger[aev] against him,
and rains down his blows upon him.[aew]
24 If he flees from an iron weapon,
then an arrow[aex] from a bronze bow pierces him.
25 When he pulls it out[aey] and it comes out of his back,
the gleaming point[aez] out of his liver,
terrors come over him.
26 Total darkness waits to receive his treasures;[afa]
a fire that has not been kindled[afb]
will consume him and devour what is left in his tent.
27 The heavens reveal his iniquity;
the earth rises up against him.
28 A flood will carry off his house,
rushing waters on the day of God’s wrath.
29 Such is the lot God allots the wicked,
and the heritage of his appointment[afc] from God.”
Job’s Reply to Zophar[afd]
21 Then Job answered:
2 “Listen carefully[afe] to my words;
let this be[aff] the consolation you offer me.[afg]
3 Bear with me[afh] and I[afi] will speak,
and after I have spoken[afj] you may mock.[afk]
4 Is my[afl] complaint against a man?[afm]
If so,[afn] why should I not be impatient?[afo]
5 Look[afp] at me and be appalled;
put your hands over your mouths.[afq]
6 For, when I think about[afr] this, I am terrified[afs]
and my body feels a shudder.[aft]
The Wicked Prosper
7 “Why do the wicked go on living,[afu]
grow old,[afv] even increase in power?
8 Their children[afw] are firmly established in their presence,[afx]
their offspring before their eyes.
9 Their houses are safe[afy] and without fear;[afz]
and no rod of punishment[aga] from God is upon them.[agb]
10 Their bulls[agc] breed[agd] without fail;[age]
their cows calve and do not miscarry.
11 They allow their children to run[agf] like a flock;
their little ones dance about.
12 They sing[agg] to the accompaniment of tambourine and harp,
and make merry to the sound of the flute.
13 They live out[agh] their years in prosperity
and go down[agi] to the grave[agj] in peace.
14 So they say to God, ‘Turn away from us!
We do not want to know your ways.[agk]
15 Who is the Almighty, that[agl] we should serve him?
What would we gain
if we were to pray[agm] to him?’[agn]
16 But their prosperity is not their own doing.[ago]
The counsel of the wicked is far from me![agp]
How Often Do the Wicked Suffer?
17 “How often[agq] is the lamp of the wicked extinguished?
How often does their[agr] misfortune come upon them?
How often does God apportion pain[ags] to them[agt] in his anger?
18 How often[agu] are they like straw before the wind,
and like chaff swept away[agv] by a whirlwind?
19 You may say,[agw] ‘God stores up a man’s[agx] punishment for his children!’[agy]
Instead let him repay[agz] the man himself[aha]
so that[ahb] he may be humbled![ahc]
20 Let his own eyes see his destruction;[ahd]
let him drink of the anger of the Almighty.
21 For what is his interest[ahe] in his home
after his death,[ahf]
when the number of his months
has been broken off?[ahg]
22 Can anyone teach[ahh] God knowledge,
since[ahi] he judges those that are on high?[ahj]
Death Levels Everything
23 “One man dies in his full vigor,[ahk]
completely secure and prosperous,
24 his body[ahl] well nourished,[ahm]
and the marrow of his bones moist.[ahn]
25 And another man[aho] dies in bitterness of soul,[ahp]
never having tasted[ahq] anything good.
26 Together they lie down in the dust,
and worms cover over them both.
Futile Words, Deceptive Answers
27 “Yes, I know what you are thinking,[ahr]
the schemes[ahs] by which you would wrong me.[aht]
28 For you say,
‘Where now is the nobleman’s house,[ahu]
and where are the tents in which the wicked lived?’[ahv]
29 Have you never questioned those who travel the roads?
Do you not recognize their accounts[ahw]—
30 that the evil man is spared
from the day of his misfortune,
that he is delivered[ahx]
from the day of God’s wrath?
31 No one denounces his conduct to his face;
no one repays him for what[ahy] he has done.[ahz]
32 And when he is carried to the tombs,
and watch is kept[aia] over the funeral mound,[aib]
33 The clods of the torrent valley[aic] are sweet to him;
behind him everybody follows in procession,
and before him goes a countless throng.
34 So how can you console me with your futile words?
Nothing is left of your answers but deception!”[aid]
Eliphaz’s Third Speech[aie]
22 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:
2 “Is it to God that a strong man is of benefit?
Is it to him that even a wise man is profitable?[aif]
3 Is it of any special benefit[aig] to the Almighty
that you should be righteous,
or is it any gain to him
that you make your ways blameless?[aih]
4 Is it because of your piety[aii] that he rebukes you
and goes to judgment with you?[aij]
5 Is not your wickedness great[aik]
and is there no end to your iniquity?
6 “For you took pledges[ail] from your brothers
for no reason,
and you stripped the clothing from the naked.[aim]
7 You gave the weary[ain] no water to drink
and from the hungry you withheld food.
8 Although you were a powerful man,[aio] owning land,[aip]
an honored man[aiq] living on it,[air]
9 you sent widows away empty-handed,
and the arms[ais] of the orphans you crushed.[ait]
10 That is why snares surround you,
and why sudden fear terrifies you,
11 why it is so dark you cannot see,[aiu]
and why a flood[aiv] of water covers you.
12 “Is not God on high in heaven?[aiw]
And see[aix] the lofty stars,[aiy] how high they are!
13 But you have said, ‘What does God know?
Does he judge through such deep darkness?[aiz]
14 Thick clouds are a veil for him, so he does not see us,[aja]
as he goes back and forth
in the vault[ajb] of heaven.’[ajc]
15 Will you keep to the old path[ajd]
that evil men have walked—
16 men[aje] who were carried off[ajf] before their time,[ajg]
when the flood[ajh] was poured out[aji]
on their foundations?[ajj]
17 They were saying to God, ‘Turn away from us,’
and, ‘What can the Almighty do to us?’[ajk]
18 But it was he[ajl] who filled their houses
with good things—
yet the counsel of the wicked[ajm]
was far from me.[ajn]
19 The righteous see their destruction[ajo] and rejoice;
the innocent mock them scornfully,[ajp] saying,
20 ‘Surely our enemies[ajq] are destroyed,
and fire consumes their wealth.’
21 “Reconcile yourself[ajr] with God,[ajs]
and be at peace[ajt] with him;
in this way your prosperity will be good.
22 Accept instruction[aju] from his mouth
and store up his words[ajv] in your heart.
23 If you return to the Almighty, you will be built up;[ajw]
if you remove wicked behavior far from your tent,
24 and throw[ajx] your gold[ajy] in the dust—
your gold[ajz] of Ophir
among the rocks in the ravines—
25 then the Almighty himself will be your gold,[aka]
and the choicest[akb] silver for you.
26 Surely then you will delight yourself[akc] in the Almighty,
and will lift up your face toward God.
27 You will pray to him and he will hear you,
and you will fulfill your vows to him.[akd]
28 Whatever you decide on[ake] a matter,
it will be established for you,
and light will shine on your ways.
29 When people are brought low[akf] and you say,
‘Lift them up!’[akg]
then he will save the downcast;[akh]
30 he will deliver even someone who is not innocent,[aki]
who will escape[akj] through the cleanness of your hands.”
Job’s Reply to Eliphaz[akk]
23 Then Job answered:
2 “Even today my complaint is still bitter;[akl]
his[akm] hand is heavy despite[akn] my groaning.
3 O that I knew[ako] where I might find him,[akp]
that I could come[akq] to his place of residence![akr]
4 I would lay out my case[aks] before him
and fill my mouth with arguments.
5 I would know with what words[akt] he would answer me,
and understand what he would say to me.
6 Would he contend[aku] with me with great power?
No, he would only pay attention to me.[akv]
7 There[akw] an upright person
could present his case[akx] before him,
and I would be delivered forever from my judge.
The Inaccessibility and Power of God
8 “If I go to the east, he is not there,
and to the west, yet I do not perceive him.
9 In the north[aky] when he is at work,[akz]
I do not see him;[ala]
when he turns[alb] to the south,
I see no trace of him.
10 But he knows the pathway that I take;[alc]
if he tested me, I would come forth like gold.[ald]
11 My feet[ale] have followed[alf] his steps closely;
I have kept to his way and have not turned aside.[alg]
12 I have not departed from the commands of his lips;
I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my allotted portion.[alh]
13 But he is unchangeable,[ali] and who can change[alj] him?
Whatever he[alk] has desired, he does.
14 For he fulfills his decree against me,[all]
and many such things are his plans.[alm]
15 That is why I am terrified in his presence;
when I consider, I am afraid because of him.
16 Indeed, God has made my heart faint;[aln]
the Almighty has terrified me.
17 Yet I have not been silent because of the darkness,
because of the thick darkness
that covered my face.[alo]
The Apparent Indifference of God
24 “Why are times not appointed by[alp] the Almighty?[alq]
Why do those who know him not see his days?
2 Men[alr] move boundary stones;
they seize the flock and pasture them.[als]
3 They drive away the orphan’s donkey;
they take the widow’s ox as a pledge.
4 They turn the needy from the pathway,
and the poor of the land hide themselves together.[alt]
5 Like[alu] wild donkeys in the wilderness,
they[alv] go out to their labor[alw] seeking diligently for food;
the arid rift valley[alx] provides[aly] food for them and for their children.
6 They reap fodder[alz] in the field,
and glean[ama] in the vineyard of the wicked.
7 They spend the night naked because they lack clothing;
they have no covering against the cold.
8 They are soaked by mountain rains
and huddle[amb] in the rocks because they lack shelter.
9 The fatherless child is snatched[amc] from the breast,[amd]
the infant of the poor is taken as a pledge.[ame]
10 They go about naked, without clothing,
and go hungry while they carry the sheaves.[amf]
11 They press out the olive oil between the rows of olive trees;[amg]
they tread the winepresses while they are thirsty.[amh]
12 From the city the dying[ami] groan,
and the wounded[amj] cry out for help,
but God charges no one with wrongdoing.[amk]
13 There are those[aml] who rebel against the light;
they do not know its ways
and they do not stay on its paths.
14 Before daybreak[amm] the murderer rises up;
he kills the poor and the needy;
in the night he is[amn] like a thief.[amo]
15 And the eye of the adulterer watches for the twilight,
thinking,[amp] ‘No eye can see me,’
and covers his face with a mask.
16 In the dark the robber[amq] breaks into houses,[amr]
but by day they shut themselves in;[ams]
they do not know the light.[amt]
17 For all of them,[amu] the morning is to them like deep darkness;
they are friends with the terrors of darkness.
18 [amv] “You say,[amw] ‘He is foam[amx] on the face of the waters;[amy]
their portion of the land is cursed
so that no one goes to their vineyard.[amz]
19 The drought[ana] as well as the heat
snatch up the melted snow;[anb]
so the grave[anc] snatches up the sinner.[and]
20 The womb[ane] forgets him,
the worm feasts on him,
no longer will he be remembered.
Like a tree, wickedness will be broken down.
21 He preys on[anf] the barren and childless woman,[ang]
and does not treat the widow well.
22 But God[anh] drags off the mighty by his power;
when God[ani] rises up against him, he has no faith in his life.[anj]
23 God[ank] may let them rest in a feeling of security,[anl]
but he is constantly watching[anm] all their ways.[ann]
24 They are exalted for a little while, and then they are gone,[ano]
they are brought low[anp] like all others, and gathered in,[anq]
and like a head of grain they are cut off.’[anr]
25 “If this is not so, who can prove me a liar
and reduce my words to nothing?”[ans]
