A Nearer Redeemer
“‘Although it is true that I am near of kin, there is a kinsman-redeemer nearer than I.’” Ruth 3:12
Our story of Ruth is not all happily-ever-after—at least not yet. Boaz has the right to redeem Naomi and Ruth, but he’s not first in line for this right. This is important, because we learn that Boaz cannot just step in; the redemption he intends to exact will be costly. We’re meant to see what it looks like to measure this cost.
Meanwhile, Boaz makes a pledge: If the “nearer” redeemer is not willing to come forward, Boaz will most assuredly redeem Naomi and Ruth. We will see that drama unfold soon enough, but it is worth noting that Boaz planted a truth that would endure long past his time. That truth assures us there is a nearer Redeemer.
There is One who forever bears the right to our redemption. It’s Jesus, our firstborn brother (Romans 8:29). He has embraced our humanity and identified with us in every way. He alone is justified in His judgment (Psalm 51:4), yet there He is, interceding for us (Romans 8:33-34). Boaz reminds us that we need redemption—and that we have a nearer Redeemer than anyone or anything this world affords.
