Finding a New Identity
“‘May I continue to find favor in your eyes, my lord,’ she said. ‘You have given me comfort and have spoken kindly to your servant—though I do not have the standing of one of your servant girls.’” Ruth 2:13
Until this point, Ruth is still identified as a Moabitess and is known to others as an outcast foreigner. But when faithful Boaz first approaches her, he affectionately refers to her as “my daughter” (v. 8). In response, Ruth falls on her face and asks, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me, a foreigner?” (v. 10)
Ruth was not simply a foreigner or an outsider to Boaz. He knows of her faithfulness toward Naomi and before the Lord. He replies, “May the LORD repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge” (v. 12). It is like he is saying to her, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Ruth understands the importance of what Boaz is saying. She is no longer a daughter of Moab, but a daughter of the King. And she is being treated as such. She has sought after the Lord, and the Lord has brought her comfort.
You, dear one, are a son or daughter of the King, too. Lift up your face even in your hardship. For He cares for you!
