Now if I do that which I would not do, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
But if what I would not, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me.
But if I am doing the very thing I do not want to do, I am no longer the one doing it [that is, it is not me that acts], but the sin [nature] which lives in me.
Now if I do what I do not desire to do, it is no longer I doing it [it is not myself that acts], but the sin [principle] which dwells within me [fixed and operating in my soul].
Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
Now if I do what I do not want, I am no longer the one that does it, but it is the sin that lives in me.
But if I do the very thing that I don’t want to do, then I’m not the one doing it anymore. Instead, it is sin that lives in me that is doing it.
But if I am doing what “the real me” doesn’t want, it is no longer “the real me” doing it but the sin housed inside me.
And so, if I don't do what I know is right, I am no longer the one doing these evil things. The sin that lives in me is what does them.
But if what *I* do not will, this I practise, [it is] no longer *I* [that] do it, but the sin that dwells in me.
But if I am doing this which I am not wanting, I am no longer producing it, but the sin dwelling in me is.
Now if I do that which I will not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
So if I do what I don’t want to do, then I am not really the one doing it. It is the sin living in me that does it.
So, when I do bad things that I do not want to do, it is not really I myself who do them. It is sin that causes me to do wrong things, because it has power in my life.
Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who am doing it, but it is sin living in me.
Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
So if I do things I do not want to do, then I am not the one doing them. It is sin living in me that does those things.

After all, the Law itself is really concerned with the spiritual—it is I who am carnal, and have sold my soul to sin. In practice, what happens? My own behaviour baffles me. For I find myself not doing what I really want to do but doing what I really loathe. Yet surely if I do things that I really don’t want to do, I am admitting that I really agree with the Law. But it cannot be said that “I” am doing them at all—it must be sin that has made its home in my nature. (And indeed, I know from experience that the carnal side of my being can scarcely be called the home of good!) I often find that I have the will to do good, but not the power. That is, I don’t accomplish the good I set out to do, and the evil I don’t really want to do I find I am always doing. Yet if I do things that I don’t really want to do then it is not, I repeat, “I” who do them, but the sin which has made its home within me.
And if I do that which I do not desire, I am not working, but sin that dwells in me.

Now if I am doing what I don’t want to, it is plain where the trouble is: sin still has me in its evil grasp.
But I need something more! For if I know the law but still can’t keep it, and if the power of sin within me keeps sabotaging my best intentions, I obviously need help! I realize that I don’t have what it takes. I can will it, but I can’t do it. I decide to do good, but I don’t really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway. My decisions, such as they are, don’t result in actions. Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time.
Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who does it, but sin that lives in me.
Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but · sin that lives in me.
Now, when I do what I don’t want to do, I am no longer the one who is doing it. Sin that lives in me is doing it.
Now if [I] do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.
But if I do the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin that dwells in me.
But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.

If I end up doing the exact thing I pledged not to do, I am no longer doing it because sin has taken up residence in me.
But if what I don’t desire, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.
If I do the thing I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but the wrong thing in me that does it.
And if I do that evil thing that I will not [Soothly if I do that thing that I will not], I work not it, but the sin that dwelleth in me.
And if what I do not will, this I do, it is no longer I that work it, but the sin that is dwelling in me.
