What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid!
What then? shall we sin, because we are not under law, but under grace? God forbid.
What then [are we to conclude]? Shall we sin because we are not under Law, but under [God’s] grace? Certainly not!
What then [are we to conclude]? Shall we sin because we live not under Law but under God’s favor and mercy? Certainly not!
What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
What then? Should we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? Absolutely not!
So what? Should we sin because we aren’t under Law but under grace? Absolutely not!
Therefore, what conclusion should we reach? “Let’s go on sinning, because we’re not under legalism but under grace”? Heaven forbid!
What does all this mean? Does it mean we are free to sin, because we are ruled by God's gift of undeserved grace and not by the Law? Certainly not!
What then? should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Far be the thought.
Therefore, what? Should we sin because we are not under the Law but under grace? May it never be!
What then? Shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
So what should we do? Should we sin because we are under grace and not under law? Certainly not!
Someone might say: ‘So we have a new life because God is kind to us. God's Law that he gave to Moses does not rule us any more. Then maybe we should continue to do wrong things. It will not make any difference.’ No, that is not true!
What then? Should we continue to sin, because we are not under law but under grace? Absolutely not!
What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!
What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!
·So what should we do [L What then; 3:9]? Should we sin because we are under grace and not under law? ·No [Absolutely not; May it never be; v. 2]!
What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the Law, but under grace? God forbid.
Then what is the implication? Should we sin because we are not controlled by God’s laws but by God’s favor? That’s unthinkable!
What, then? Shall we sin, because we are not under law but under God's grace? By no means!
What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Absolutely not!
So what should we do? Should we sin because we are under grace and not under law? No!
What, then, does this mean? Should we go on sinning because we are not under Law but under grace? Of course not!
Now, what shall we do? Shall we go on sinning because we have no Law to condemn us any more, but are living under grace? Never! Just think what it would mean. You belong to the power which you choose to obey, whether you choose sin, whose reward is death, or God, obedience to whom means the reward of righteousness. Thank God that you, who were at one time the servants of sin, honestly responded to the impact of Christ’s teaching when you came under its influence. Then, released from the service of sin, you entered the service of righteousness. (I use an everyday illustration because human nature grasps truth more readily that way.) In the past you voluntarily gave your bodies to the service of vice and wickedness—for the purpose of becoming wicked. So, now, give yourselves to the service of righteousness—for the purpose of becoming really good. For when you were employed by sin you owed no duty to righteousness. Yet what sort of harvest did you reap from those things that today you blush to remember? In the long run those things mean one thing only—death.
What then? shall we sin because we are not under the law, but under grace? No, in no wise.
What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be!
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be!
Does this mean that now we can go ahead and sin and not worry about it? (For our salvation does not depend on keeping the law but on receiving God’s grace!) Of course not!
So, since we’re out from under the old tyranny, does that mean we can live any old way we want? Since we’re free in the freedom of God, can we do anything that comes to mind? Hardly. You know well enough from your own experience that there are some acts of so-called freedom that destroy freedom. Offer yourselves to sin, for instance, and it’s your last free act. But offer yourselves to the ways of God and the freedom never quits. All your lives you’ve let sin tell you what to do. But thank God you’ve started listening to a new master, one whose commands set you free to live openly in his freedom!
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? God forbid!
What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!
Then what is the implication? Should we sin because we are not controlled by God’s laws but by God’s favor? That’s unthinkable!
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? Of course not!
What then? Are we to sin because we are not under the Law but under grace? Far from it!
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be!
What then? Should we sin because we are not under the Law but under grace? Of course not!
So what should we do? Should we sin because we are under grace and not under law? No!
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Absolutely not!
What should we say then? Should we sin because we are not ruled by the law but by God’s grace? Not at all!
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means!
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means!
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!
What are we to do then? Are we to sin because we have God’s loving-favor and are not living by the Law? No, not at all!
Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not!
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!
What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!
What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!
What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!
What then? Shall we sin, because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!
What then? Should we commit averah, because we are not under the epoch of Torah but under the epoch of Chesed? Chas v’shalom!
What then? Shall we sin, because we are not under the Law, but under grace? Absolutely not!
What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!
What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be!
So what do we do now? Throw ourselves into lives of sin because we are cloaked in grace and don’t have to answer to the law? Absolutely not!
What then? Shall we sin, because we are not under law, but under grace? May it never be!
What then? The law does not rule over us now. God's loving kindness rules over us. So, shall we do wrong things? No, never!
What therefore? Shall we do sin [Shall we sin], for we be not under the law, but under grace? God forbid [Far be it].
What then? shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? let it not be!
