For scarcely will one die for a righteous man, yet perhaps for a good man some would even dare to die.
For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: for peradventure for the good man some one would even dare to die.
Now it is an extraordinary thing for one to willingly give his life even for an upright man, though perhaps for a good man [one who is noble and selfless and worthy] someone might even dare to die.

Very few people will die to save the life of someone else, even if it is for a good person. Someone might be willing to die for an especially good person.
Nobody will agree to die on behalf of another person, even if that person has done what is right. Maybe someone might be brave enough to die on behalf of a person who is very good.
It is rare indeed that someone will die for a righteous person. Perhaps someone might actually go so far as to die for a person who has been good to him.

For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—
·Very few people will [or Rarely/Scarcely will anyone] die for a ·righteous [just; pious] person. Although perhaps for a ·good [truly good; noble] person someone might possibly die [C the “righteous” person may be someone who is outwardly religious, while the “good” person is genuinely generous and loving].

For it is rare for anyone to die for a righteous person, though somebody might be brave enough to die for a good person.
And we can see that it was while we were powerless to help ourselves that Christ died for sinful men. In human experience it is a rare thing for one man to give his life for another, even if the latter be a good man, though there have been a few who have had the courage to do it. Yet the proof of God’s amazing love is this: that it was while we were sinners that Christ died for us.

For only rarely will someone die on behalf of a righteous person (for on behalf of a good person possibly someone might even dare to die),
Even if we were good, we really wouldn’t expect anyone to die for us, though, of course, that might be barely possible.
Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn’t, and doesn’t, wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn’t been so weak, we wouldn’t have known what to do anyway. We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice. But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him.
Rarely for a righteous man will one die. Yet perhaps for a good man some would even dare to die.
