for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

He wasn't like the teachers of the Law; instead, he taught with authority.

Jesus did not teach like their teachers of the law. He taught like a person who had authority.
because he was teaching them like a person who had authority, and not like their scribes.
When Jesus had finished these words the crowd were astonished at the power behind his teaching. For his words had the ring of authority, quite unlike those of the scribes.

When Jesus concluded his address, the crowd burst into applause. They had never heard teaching like this. It was apparent that he was living everything he was saying—quite a contrast to their religion teachers! This was the best teaching they had ever heard.
