Matthew 11:17
and saying, ‘We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.’
and say, We piped unto you, and ye did not dance; we wailed, and ye did not mourn.
and say ‘We piped the flute for you [playing wedding], and you did not dance; we wailed sad dirges [playing funeral], and you did not mourn and cry aloud.’
We piped to you [playing wedding], and you did not dance; we wailed dirges [playing funeral], and you did not mourn and beat your breasts and weep aloud.
And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
‘We played the flute for you and you didn’t dance. We sang a funeral song and you didn’t mourn.’
‘We made happy music, but you wouldn’t dance! We made sad music, but you wouldn’t cry!’
“We played the flute, but you would not dance! We sang a funeral song, but you would not mourn!”
say, We have piped to you, and ye have not danced: we have mourned to you, and ye have not wailed.
say ‘We played the flute for you and you did not dance. We lamented and you did not beat-your-breast’.
Who crying to their companions say: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have lamented, and you have not mourned.
‘We played flute music for you, but you did not dance; we sang a funeral song, but you were not sad.’
“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
‘We played ·music [L the pipe/flute] for you, but you did not dance; we sang a ·sad song [funeral song; dirge], but you did not ·cry [weep].’ [C The religious leaders wanted John to “dance” (lighten up his severe message) and wanted Jesus to “mourn” (follow their restrictive lifestyle).]
And say, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced, we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
‘We played music for you, but you didn’t dance. We sang a funeral song, but you didn’t show any sadness.’
‘We played wedding music for you, but you wouldn't dance! We sang funeral songs, but you wouldn't cry!’
We played the flute for you, but you didn’t dance; we sang a lament, but you didn’t mourn!
‘We played music for you, but you did not dance; we sang a sad song, but you did not cry.’
‘A wedding song we played for you, the dance you all did scorn. A woeful dirge we chanted, too, but then you would not mourn.’
“But how can I show what the people of this generation are like? They are like children sitting in the market-place calling out to their friends, ‘We played at weddings for you but you wouldn’t dance, and we played at funerals and you wouldn’t cry!’ For John came in the strictest austerity and people say, ‘He’s crazy!’ Then the Son of Man came, enjoying life, and people say, ‘Look, a drunkard and a glutton—the bosom-friend of the tax-collector and the sinner.’ Ah, well, wisdom stands or falls by her own actions.”
and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
saying, ‘We played the flute for you and you did not dance; we sang a lament and you did not mourn.’
‘We played wedding and you weren’t happy, so we played funeral but you weren’t sad.’
“How can I account for this generation? The people have been like spoiled children whining to their parents, ‘We wanted to skip rope, and you were always too tired; we wanted to talk, but you were always too busy.’ John came fasting and they called him crazy. I came feasting and they called me a lush, a friend of the riffraff. Opinion polls don’t count for much, do they? The proof of the pudding is in the eating.”
saying: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge to you, and you did not mourn.’
‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
