For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
For what shall a man be profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? or what shall a man give in exchange for his life?
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world [wealth, fame, success], but forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life [his blessed life in the kingdom of God]? Or what would a man give as an exchange for his [blessed] life [in the kingdom of God]?

Why would people gain the whole world but lose their lives? What will people give in exchange for their lives?
What good will it do someone if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or, what can a person give in exchange for his life?
What will you gain, if you own the whole world but destroy yourself? What would you give to get back your soul?
For what does a man profit, if he should gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

It is worth nothing for you to have the whole world if you yourself are lost. You could never pay enough to buy back your life.
A person may get everything in the whole world for himself. But if he loses his life, it will not be any good for him. There is nothing that a person can give to get back his life.
After all, what will it benefit a person if he gains the whole world, but forfeits his soul? Or what can a person give in exchange for his soul?

Will you gain anything if you win the whole world but lose your life? Of course not! There is nothing you can give to regain your life.

Then Jesus went to work on his disciples. “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self. What kind of deal is it to get everything you want but lose yourself? What could you ever trade your soul for?
