But what did you [really] go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one far more [eminent and remarkable] than a prophet [who foretells the future].
What then did you go out to see? A prophet (a forthteller)? Yes, I tell you, and far more than a prophet.
But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.

Nu, so what did you go out to see? A prophet! Yes, and I tell you he’s much more than a prophet.
What then did you go out to see? Was he a prophet? He certainly was! I tell you that he was more than a prophet.
But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and [what is] more excellent than a prophet.

So what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, John is a prophet. But I tell you, he is more than that.
So what did you go to see? Did you go to see a prophet sent by God? Yes! But I tell you, John was even more important than a prophet.
But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet.
What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

But what went ye forth to see? A Prophet? yea, I say to you, and greater than a Prophet.
Really, what did you go to see? A prophet? Let me tell you that he is far more than a prophet.
Tell me, what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes indeed, but you saw much more than a prophet.
What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and far more than a prophet.
But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, and I tell you, John is more than a prophet.
Really, what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and even more than a prophet!
When these messengers had gone back, Jesus began to talk to the crowd about John. “What did you go out into the desert to look at? Was it a reed waving in the breeze? Well, what was it you went out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? But the men who wear fine clothes live luxuriously in palaces. But what did you really go to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, a prophet and far more than a prophet! This is the man of whom the scripture says, ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you’.

After John’s messengers left to make their report, Jesus said more about John to the crowd of people. “What did you expect when you went out to see him in the wild? A weekend camper? Hardly. What then? A sheik in silk pajamas? Not in the wilderness, not by a long shot. What then? A messenger from God? That’s right, a messenger! Probably the greatest messenger you’ll ever hear. He is the messenger Malachi announced when he wrote, I’m sending my messenger on ahead To make the road smooth for you.
What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and much more than a prophet.
But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet.
Really, what did you go to see? A prophet? Let me tell you that he is far more than a prophet.

What were you seeking? A prophet? Ah yes, that’s what John is, and even more than a prophet.

What did you go out to see? A prophet of God? Yes, I tell you, and he is much more than a prophet.
