The men were amazed at his wise answer. They could say nothing. They were not able to trick Jesus there in front of the people. He said nothing they could use against him.
So the Jewish leaders could not make Jesus say anything wrong. They were very surprised at his answer to their question. They could not say anything more against him. All the people who were there saw this.
They were not able to trap him in what he said in the presence of the people. They were amazed at his answer and became silent.
And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent.
