Now a certain man was sick named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

A man by the name of Lazarus was sick in the village of Bethany. He had two sisters, Mary and Martha. This was the same Mary who later poured perfume on the Lord’s head and wiped his feet with her hair.
Now there was a certain [man] sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister.
Now there was a certain one being sick— Lazarus, from Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha, her sister.

And a certain man was sick, named Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary, and her sister Martha.
Lazarus, who lived in Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived, was sick.

(Lazarus was the brother of the Mary who poured perfume upon the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) So the sisters sent word to Jesus: “Lord, your friend is ill.”

Do you remember Mary, who poured the costly perfume on Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair? Well, her brother Lazarus, who lived in Bethany with Mary and her sister Martha, was sick.
A man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. This was the same Mary who massaged the Lord’s feet with aromatic oils and then wiped them with her hair. It was her brother Lazarus who was sick. So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Master, the one you love so very much is sick.”
Now a man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
Now there was a certain man who was ill, Lazareth of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. ·
Lazarus, who lived in Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived, was sick.
