And the Light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

The same came as a witness to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

That was the true Light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not.

He came unto His own, and His own received Him not.

But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to those who believe in His name,

who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only Begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth.

John bore witness of Him and cried, saying, “This was He of whom I spoke, ‘He that cometh after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’”

And of His fullness have we all received, and grace for grace.

For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him.

And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who art thou?”

And he confessed and denied not, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”

And they asked him, “What then? Art thou Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Art thou that Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”

Then said they unto him, “Who art thou, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What sayest thou of thyself?”

He said, “I am ‘the voice of one crying in the wilderness, “Make straight the way of the Lord,”’ as said the prophet Isaiah.”

And those who were sent were of the Pharisees.

And they asked him, and said unto him, “Why dost thou baptize then if thou art not that Christ, nor Elijah, neither that Prophet?”

John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but there standeth One among you whom ye know not.

He it is who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose shoe’s strap I am not worthy to unloose.”

These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

The next day John saw Jesus coming unto him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world!

This is He of whom I said, ‘After me cometh a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’

And I knew Him not; but that He should be made manifest to Israel, therefore have I come baptizing with water.”

And John bore record, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from Heaven like a dove, and It abode upon Him.

And I knew Him not. But He that sent me to baptize with water, the Same said unto me, ‘Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and remaining on Him, the Same is He that baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.’

And I saw and bore record that this is the Son of God.”

Again the next day John stood with two of his disciples,

and looking upon Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”

And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

Then Jesus turned and saw them following, and said unto them, “What seek ye?” They said unto Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, being interpreted, “Master”), “where dwellest Thou?”

He said unto them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He dwelt and stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

He first found his own brother Simon and said unto him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is, being interpreted, “the Christ”).

And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, He said, “Thou art Simon, the son of Jonah. Thou shalt be called Cephas” (which is by interpretation, “a stone”).

The day following, Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and found Philip and said unto him, “Follow Me.”

Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

Philip found Nathanael and said unto him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and the Prophets wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

And Nathanael said unto him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip said unto him, “Come and see.”

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!”

Nathanael said unto Him, “How knowest Thou me?” Jesus answered and said unto him, “Before Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.”

Nathanael answered and said unto Him, “Rabbi, Thou art the Son of God; Thou art the King of Israel.”

Jesus answered and said unto him, “Because I said unto thee, ‘I saw thee under the fig tree,’ believest thou? Thou shalt see greater things than these.”

And He said unto him, “Verily, verily I say unto you, hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye shall see the heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

In the beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself.

He was [continually existing] in the beginning [co-eternally] with God.

All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him not even one thing was made that has come into being.

In Him was life [and the power to bestow life], and the life was the Light of men.

The Light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness did not understand it or overpower it or appropriate it or absorb it [and is unreceptive to it].

There came a man commissioned and sent from God, whose name was John.

This man came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe [in Christ, the Light] through him.

John was not the Light, but came to testify about the Light.

There it was—the true Light [the genuine, perfect, steadfast Light] which, coming into the world, enlightens everyone.

He (Christ) was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him.

He came to that which was His own [that which belonged to Him—His world, His creation, His possession], and those who were His own [people—the Jewish nation] did not receive and welcome Him.

But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the right [the authority, the privilege] to become children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name—

who were born, not of blood [natural conception], nor of the will of the flesh [physical impulse], nor of the will of man [that of a natural father], but of God [that is, a divine and supernatural birth—they are born of God—spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified].

And the Word (Christ) became flesh, and lived among us; and we [actually] saw His glory, glory as belongs to the [One and] only begotten Son of the Father, [the Son who is truly unique, the only One of His kind, who is] full of grace and truth (absolutely free of deception).

John testified [repeatedly] about Him and has cried out [testifying officially for the record, with validity and relevance], “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I and has priority over me, for He existed before me.’”

For out of His fullness [the superabundance of His grace and truth] we have all received grace upon grace [spiritual blessing upon spiritual blessing, favor upon favor, and gift heaped upon gift].

For the Law was given through Moses, but grace [the unearned, undeserved favor of God] and truth came through Jesus Christ.

No one has seen God [His essence, His divine nature] at any time; the [One and] only begotten God [that is, the unique Son] who is in the intimate presence of the Father, He has explained Him [and interpreted and revealed the awesome wonder of the Father].

This is the testimony of John [the Baptist] when the Jews sent priests and Levites to him from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

And he confessed [truthfully] and did not deny [that he was only a man], but acknowledged, “I am not the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed)!”

They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the [promised] Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”

Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

He said, “I am the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.

They asked him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

John answered them, “I baptize [only] in water, but among you there stands One whom you do not recognize and of whom you know nothing.

It is He [the preeminent One] who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie [even as His slave].”

These things occurred in Bethany across the Jordan [at the Jordan River crossing], where John was baptizing.

The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I and has priority over me, for He existed before me.’

I did not recognize Him [as the Messiah]; but I came baptizing in water so that He would be [publicly] revealed to Israel.”

John gave [further] evidence [testifying officially for the record, with validity and relevance], saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.

I did not recognize Him [as the Messiah], but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this One is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

I myself have [actually] seen [that happen], and my testimony is that this is the Son of God!”

Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples,

and he looked at Jesus as He walked along, and said, “Look! The Lamb of God!”

The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.

And Jesus turned and saw them following Him, and asked them, “What do you want?” They answered Him, “Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?”

He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went [with Him] and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

One of the two who heard what John said and [as a result] followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

He first looked for and found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which translated means the Christ).

Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas (which is translated Peter).”

The next day Jesus decided to go into Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me [as My disciple, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher, and walking the same path of life that I walk].”

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the One Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote about—Jesus from Nazareth, the son of Joseph [according to public record].”

Nathanael answered him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip replied, “Come and see.”

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Here is an Israelite indeed [a true descendant of Jacob], in whom there is no guile nor deceit nor duplicity!”

Nathanael said to Jesus, “How do You know [these things about] me?” Jesus answered, “Before Philip called you, when you were still under the fig tree, I saw you.”

Nathanael answered, “Rabbi (Teacher), You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.”

Jesus replied, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe [in Me]? You will see greater things than this.”

Then He said to him, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man [the bridge between heaven and earth].”

In the beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself.

He was not the Light himself, but came that he might bear witness regarding the Light.

He came to that which belonged to Him [to His own—His domain, creation, things, world], and they who were His own did not receive Him and did not welcome Him.

But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the authority (power, privilege, right) to become the children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name—

Who owe their birth neither to bloods nor to the will of the flesh [that of physical impulse] nor to the will of man [that of a natural father], but to God. [They are born of God!]

And the Word (Christ) became flesh (human, incarnate) and tabernacled (fixed His tent of flesh, lived awhile) among us; and we [actually] saw His glory (His honor, His majesty), such glory as an only begotten son receives from his father, full of grace (favor, loving-kindness) and truth.

John testified about Him and cried out, This was He of Whom I said, He Who comes after me has priority over me, for He was before me. [He takes rank above me, for He existed before I did. He has advanced before me, because He is my Chief.]

For out of His fullness (abundance) we have all received [all had a share and we were all supplied with] one grace after another and spiritual blessing upon spiritual blessing and even favor upon favor and gift [heaped] upon gift.

For while the Law was given through Moses, grace (unearned, undeserved favor and spiritual blessing) and truth came through Jesus Christ.

No man has ever seen God at any time; the only unique Son, or the only begotten God, Who is in the bosom [in the intimate presence] of the Father, He has declared Him [He has revealed Him and brought Him out where He can be seen; He has interpreted Him and He has made Him known].

And this is the testimony of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites to him from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you?

He confessed (admitted the truth) and did not try to conceal it, but acknowledged, I am not the Christ!

They asked him, What then? Are you Elijah? And he said, I am not! Are you the Prophet? And he answered, No!

Then they said to him, Who are you? Tell us, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?

He said, I am the voice of one crying aloud in the wilderness [the voice of one shouting in the desert], Prepare the way of the Lord [level, straighten out, the path of the Lord], as the prophet Isaiah said.

The messengers had been sent from the Pharisees.

And they asked him, Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?

John answered them, I [only] baptize in (with) water. Among you there stands One Whom you do not recognize and with Whom you are not acquainted and of Whom you know nothing.

It is He Who, coming after me, is preferred before me, the string of Whose sandal I am not worthy to unloose.

These things occurred in Bethany (Bethabara) across the Jordan [at the Jordan crossing], where John was then baptizing.

The next day John saw Jesus coming to him and said, Look! There is the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world!

This is He of Whom I said, After me comes a Man Who has priority over me [Who takes rank above me] because He was before me and existed before I did.

And I did not know Him and did not recognize Him [myself]; but it is in order that He should be made manifest and be revealed to Israel [be brought out where we can see Him] that I came baptizing in (with) water.

John gave further evidence, saying, I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and it dwelt on Him [never to depart].

And I did not know Him nor recognize Him, but He Who sent me to baptize in (with) water said to me, Upon Him Whom you shall see the Spirit descend and remain, that One is He Who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

And I have seen [that happen—I actually did see it] and my testimony is that this is the Son of God!

Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples,

And he looked at Jesus as He walked along, and said, Look! There is the Lamb of God!

The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Him.

But Jesus turned, and as He saw them following Him, He said to them, What are you looking for? [And what is it you wish?] And they answered Him, Rabbi—which translated is Teacher—where are You staying?

He said to them, Come and see. So they went and saw where He was staying, and they remained with Him that day. It was then about the tenth hour (about four o’clock in the afternoon).

One of the two who heard what John said and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

He first sought out and found his own brother Simon and said to him, We have found (discovered) the Messiah!—which translated is the Christ (the Anointed One).

Andrew then led (brought) Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, You are Simon son of John. You shall be called Cephas—which translated is Peter [Stone].

The next day Jesus desired and decided to go into Galilee; and He found Philip and said to him, Join Me as My attendant and follow Me.

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the same city as Andrew and Peter.

Philip sought and found Nathanael and told him, We have found (discovered) the One Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote about—Jesus from Nazareth, the [legal] son of Joseph!

Nathanael answered him, [Nazareth!] Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip replied, Come and see!

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him and said concerning him, See! Here is an Israelite indeed [a true descendant of Jacob], in whom there is no guile nor deceit nor falsehood nor duplicity!

Nathanael said to Jesus, How do You know me? [How is it that You know these things about me?] Jesus answered him, Before [ever] Philip called you, when you were still under the fig tree, I saw you.

Nathanael answered, Teacher, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!

Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was with God in the beginning.

All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created.

In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John.

He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him.

He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world was created through him, and yet the world did not recognize him.

He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.

But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name,

who were born, not of natural descent, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

(John testified concerning him and exclaimed, “This was the one of whom I said, ‘The one coming after me ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’”)

Indeed, we have all received grace upon grace from his fullness,

for the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

No one has ever seen God. The one and only Son, who is himself God and is at the Father’s side—he has revealed him.

This was John’s testimony when the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you?”

He didn’t deny it but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.”

“What then?” they asked him. “Are you Elijah?” “I am not,” he said. “Are you the Prophet?” “No,” he answered.

“Who are you, then?” they asked. “We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself?”

He said, “I am a voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord—just as Isaiah the prophet said.”

Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.

So they asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?”

“I baptize with water,” John answered them. “Someone stands among you, but you don’t know him.

He is the one coming after me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to untie.”

All this happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

This is the one I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’

I didn’t know him, but I came baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.”

And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and he rested on him.

I didn’t know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The one you see the Spirit descending and resting on—he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”

The next day, John was standing with two of his disciples.

When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus.

When Jesus turned and noticed them following him, he asked them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

“Come and you’ll see,” he replied. So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed him.

He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated “the Christ”),

and he brought Simon to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, he said, “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated “Peter”).

The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. He found Philip and told him, “Follow me.”

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter.

Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law (and so did the prophets): Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”

“Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathanael asked him. “Come and see,” Philip answered.

Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”

“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered.

“Rabbi,” Nathanael replied, “You are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel!”

Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.”

Then he said, “Truly I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

The Word was with God in the beginning.

Everything came into being through the Word, and without the Word nothing came into being. What came into being

through the Word was life, and the life was the light for all people.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness doesn’t extinguish the light.

A man named John was sent from God.

He came as a witness to testify concerning the light, so that through him everyone would believe in the light.

He himself wasn’t the light, but his mission was to testify concerning the light.

The true light that shines on all people was coming into the world.

The light was in the world, and the world came into being through the light, but the world didn’t recognize the light.

The light came to his own people, and his own people didn’t welcome him.

But those who did welcome him, those who believed in his name, he authorized to become God’s children,

born not from blood nor from human desire or passion, but born from God.

The Word became flesh and made his home among us. We have seen his glory, glory like that of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

John testified about him, crying out, “This is the one of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is greater than me because he existed before me.’”

From his fullness we have all received grace upon grace;

as the Law was given through Moses, so grace and truth came into being through Jesus Christ.

No one has ever seen God. God the only Son, who is at the Father’s side, has made God known.

This is John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you?”

John confessed (he didn’t deny but confessed), “I’m not the Christ.”

They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” John said, “I’m not.” “Are you the prophet?” John answered, “No.”

They asked, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

John replied, “I am a voice crying out in the wilderness, Make the Lord’s path straight, just as the prophet Isaiah said.”

Those sent by the Pharisees

asked, “Why do you baptize if you aren’t the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”

John answered, “I baptize with water. Someone greater stands among you, whom you don’t recognize.

He comes after me, but I’m not worthy to untie his sandal straps.”

This encounter took place across the Jordan in Bethany where John was baptizing.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

This is the one about whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is really greater than me because he existed before me.’

Even I didn’t recognize him, but I came baptizing with water so that he might be made known to Israel.”

John testified, “I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and it rested on him.

Even I didn’t recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit coming down and resting is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

I have seen and testified that this one is God’s Son.”

The next day John was standing again with two of his disciples.

When he saw Jesus walking along he said, “Look! The Lamb of God!”

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Here is a genuine Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”

Nathanael asked him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.”

Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are God’s Son. You are the king of Israel.”

Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these!

I assure you that you will see heaven open and God’s angels going up to heaven and down to earth on the Human One.”

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was with God in the beginning.

All things came to be through him, and without him nothing made had being.

In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not suppressed it.

There was a man sent from God whose name was Yochanan.

He came to be a testimony, to bear witness concerning the light; so that through him, everyone might put his trust in God and be faithful to him.

He himself was not that light; no, he came to bear witness concerning the light.

This was the true light, which gives light to everyone entering the world.

He was in the world — the world came to be through him — yet the world did not know him.

He came to his own homeland, yet his own people did not receive him.

But to as many as did receive him, to those who put their trust in his person and power, he gave the right to become children of God,

not because of bloodline, physical impulse or human intention, but because of God.

The Word became a human being and lived with us, and we saw his Sh’khinah, the Sh’khinah of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.

Yochanan witnessed concerning him when he cried out, “This is the man I was talking about when I said, ‘The one coming after me has come to rank ahead of me, because he existed before me.’”

We have all received from his fullness, yes, grace upon grace.

For the Torah was given through Moshe; grace and truth came through Yeshua the Messiah.

No one has ever seen God; but the only and unique Son, who is identical with God and is at the Father’s side — he has made him known.

Here is Yochanan’s testimony: when the Judeans sent cohanim and L’vi’im from Yerushalayim to ask him, “Who are you?”

he was very straightforward and stated clearly, “I am not the Messiah.”

“Then who are you?” they asked him. “Are you Eliyahu?” “No, I am not,” he said. “Are you ‘the prophet,’ the one we’re expecting?” “No,” he replied.

So they said to him, “Who are you? — so that we can give an answer to the people who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?”

He answered in the words of Yesha‘yahu the prophet, “I am The voice of someone crying out: ‘In the desert make the way of Adonai straight!’”

Some of those who had been sent were P’rushim.

They asked him, “If you are neither the Messiah nor Eliyahu nor ‘the prophet,’ then why are you immersing people?”

To them Yochanan replied, “I am immersing people in water, but among you is standing someone whom you don’t know.

He is the one coming after me — I’m not good enough even to untie his sandal!”

All this took place in Beit-Anyah, east of the Yarden, where Yochanan was immersing.

The next day, Yochanan saw Yeshua coming toward him and said, “Look! God’s lamb! The one who is taking away the sin of the world!

This is the man I was talking about when I said, ‘After me is coming someone who has come to rank above me, because he existed before me.’

I myself did not know who he was, but the reason I came immersing with water was so that he might be made known to Isra’el.”

Then Yochanan gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and remaining on him.

I myself did not know who he was, but the one who sent me to immerse in water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining, this is the one who immerses in the Ruach HaKodesh.’

And I have seen and borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

The next day, Yochanan was again standing with two of his talmidim.

On seeing Yeshua walking by, he said, “Look! God’s lamb!”

His two talmidim heard him speaking, and they followed Yeshua.

Yeshua turned and saw them following him, and he asked them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi!” (which means “Teacher!”) “Where are you staying?”

He said to them, “Come and see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and remained with him the rest of the day — it was about four o’clock in the afternoon.

One of the two who had heard Yochanan and had followed Yeshua was Andrew the brother of Shim‘on Kefa.

The first thing he did was to find his brother Shim‘on and tell him, “We’ve found the Mashiach!” (The word means “one who has been anointed.”)

He took him to Yeshua. Looking at him, Yeshua said, “You are Shim‘on Bar-Yochanan; you will be known as Kefa.” (The name means “rock.”)

The next day, having decided to leave for the Galil, Yeshua found Philip and said, “Follow me!”

Philip was from Beit-Tzaidah, the town where Andrew and Kefa lived.

Philip found Natan’el and told him, “We’ve found the one that Moshe wrote about in the Torah, also the Prophets — it’s Yeshua Ben-Yosef from Natzeret!”

Natan’el answered him, “Natzeret? Can anything good come from there?” “Come and see,” Philip said to him.

Yeshua saw Natan’el coming toward him and remarked about him, “Here’s a true son of Isra’el — nothing false in him!”

Natan’el said to him, “How do you know me?” Yeshua answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

Natan’el said, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Isra’el!”

Yeshua answered him, “you believe all this just because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than that!”

Then he said to him, “Yes indeed! I tell you that you will see heaven opened and the angels of God going up and coming down on the Son of Man!”

In the beginning was the one who is called the Word. The Word was with God and was truly God.

From the very beginning the Word was with God.

And with this Word, God created all things. Nothing was made without the Word. Everything that was created

received its life from him, and his life gave light to everyone.

The light keeps shining in the dark, and darkness has never put it out.

God sent a man named John,

who came to tell about the light and to lead all people to have faith.

John wasn't this light. He came only to tell about the light.

The true light that shines on everyone was coming into the world.

The Word was in the world, but no one knew him, though God had made the world with his Word.

He came into his own world, but his own nation did not welcome him.

Yet some people accepted him and put their faith in him. So he gave them the right to be the children of God.

They were not God's children by nature or because of any human desires. God himself was the one who made them his children.

The Word became a human being and lived here with us. We saw his true glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father. From him the complete gifts of undeserved grace and truth have come down to us.

John spoke about him and shouted, “This is the one I told you would come! He is greater than I am, because he was alive before I was born.”

Because of all that the Son is, we have been given one blessing after another.

The Law was given by Moses, but Jesus Christ brought us undeserved kindness and truth.

No one has ever seen God. The only Son, who is truly God and is closest to the Father, has shown us what God is like.

The religious authorities in Jerusalem sent priests and temple helpers to ask John who he was. He told them plainly, “I am not the Messiah.”

Then when they asked him if he were Elijah, he said, “No, I am not!” And when they asked if he were the Prophet, he also said “No!”

Finally, they said, “Who are you then? We have to give an answer to the ones who sent us. Tell us who you are!”

John answered in the words of the prophet Isaiah, “I am only someone shouting in the desert, ‘Get the road ready for the Lord!’ ”

Some Pharisees had also been sent to John.

They asked him, “Why are you baptizing people, if you are not the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet?”

John told them, “I use water to baptize people. But here with you is someone you don't know.

Even though I came first, I am not good enough to untie his sandals.”

John said this as he was baptizing east of the Jordan River in Bethany.

The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him and said: Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

He is the one I told you about when I said, “Someone else will come, who is greater than I am, because he was alive before I was born.”

I didn't know who he was. But I came to baptize you with water, so that everyone in Israel would see him.

I was there and saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven. And the Spirit stayed on him.

Before this I didn't know who he was. But the one who sent me to baptize with water had told me, “You will see the Spirit come down and stay on someone. Then you will know that he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.”

I saw this happen, and I tell you that he is the Son of God.

The next day, John was there again, and two of his followers were with him.

When he saw Jesus walking by, he said, “Here is the Lamb of God!”

John's two followers heard him, and they went with Jesus.

When Jesus turned and saw them, he asked, “What do you want?” They answered, “Rabbi, where do you live?” The Hebrew word “Rabbi” means “Teacher.”

Jesus replied, “Come and see!” It was already about four o'clock in the afternoon when they went with him and saw where he lived. So they stayed on for the rest of the day.

One of the two men who had heard John and had gone with Jesus was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter.

The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother and tell him, “We have found the Messiah!” The Hebrew word “Messiah” means the same as the Greek word “Christ.”

Andrew brought his brother to Jesus. And when Jesus saw him, he said, “Simon son of John, you will be called Cephas.” This name can be translated as “Peter.”

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. There he met Philip, who was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter. Jesus said to Philip, “Follow me.”

Philip then found Nathanael and said, “We have found the one that Moses and the Prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.”

Nathanael asked, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Philip answered, “Come and see.”

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said, “Here is a true descendant of our ancestor Israel. And he isn't deceitful.”

“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.”

Nathanael said, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God and the King of Israel!”

Jesus answered, “Did you believe me just because I said that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see something even greater.

I tell you for certain you will see heaven open and God's angels going up and coming down on the Son of Man.”

In [the] beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

*He* was in the beginning with God.

All things received being through him, and without him not one [thing] received being which has received being.

In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

And the light appears in darkness, and the darkness apprehended it not.

There was a man sent from God, his name John.

He came for witness, that he might witness concerning the light, that all might believe through him.

*He* was not the light, but that he might witness concerning the light.

The true light was that which, coming into the world, lightens every man.

He was in the world, and the world had [its] being through him, and the world knew him not.

He came to his own, and his own received him not;

but as many as received him, to them gave he [the] right to be children of God, to those that believe on his name;

who have been born, not of blood, nor of flesh's will, nor of man's will, but of God.

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us (and we have contemplated his glory, a glory as of an only-begotten with a father), full of grace and truth;

(John bears witness of him, and he has cried, saying, This was he of whom I said, He that comes after me is preferred before me, for he was before me;)

for of his fulness we all have received, and grace upon grace.

For the law was given by Moses: grace and truth subsists through Jesus Christ.

No one has seen God at any time; the only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, *he* hath declared [him].

And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent from Jerusalem priests and Levites that they might ask him, Thou, who art thou?

And he acknowledged and denied not, and acknowledged, I am not the Christ.

And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he says, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No.

They said therefore to him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

He said, I [am] [the] voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the path of [the] Lord, as said Esaias the prophet.

And they were sent from among the Pharisees.

And they asked him and said to him, Why baptisest thou then, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet?

John answered them saying, I baptise with water. In the midst of you stands, whom ye do not know,

he who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to unloose.

These things took place in Bethany, across the Jordan, where John was baptising.

On the morrow he sees Jesus coming to him, and says, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.

He it is of whom I said, A man comes after me who takes a place before me, because he *was* before me;

and I knew him not; but that he might be manifested to Israel, therefore have I come baptising with water.

And John bore witness, saying, I beheld the Spirit descending as a dove from heaven, and it abode upon him.

And I knew him not; but he who sent me to baptise with water, *he* said to me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on him, he it is who baptises with [the] Holy Spirit.

And I have seen and borne witness that this is the Son of God.

And, looking at Jesus as he walked, he says, Behold the Lamb of God.

And the two disciples heard him speaking, and followed Jesus.

But Jesus having turned, and seeing them following, says to them, What seek ye? And *they* said to him, Rabbi (which, being interpreted, signifies Teacher), where abidest thou?

He says to them, Come and see. They went therefore, and saw where he abode; and they abode with him that day. It was about the tenth hour.

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard [this] from John and followed him.

He first finds his own brother Simon, and says to him, We have found the Messias (which being interpreted is Christ).

And he led him to Jesus. Jesus looking at him said, Thou art Simon, the son of Jonas; thou shalt be called Cephas (which interpreted is stone).

On the morrow he would go forth into Galilee, and Jesus finds Philip, and says to him, Follow me.

And Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.

Philip finds Nathanael, and says to him, We have found him of whom Moses wrote in the law, and the prophets, Jesus, the son of Joseph, who is from Nazareth.

And Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip says to him, Come and see.

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and says of him, Behold [one] truly an Israelite, in whom there is no guile.

Nathanael says to him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said to him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig-tree, I saw thee.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory— glory as of the only-born from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John testifies concerning Him, and has cried-out saying, “This One was the One of Whom I said, ‘The One coming after me has become ahead of me, because He was before me’”.

Because we all received from His fullness— even grace upon grace.

Because the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

John responded to them saying, “I am baptizing with water. Amidst you stands One Whom you do not know—

the One coming after me, of Whom I am not worthy that I may untie the strap of His sandal”.

These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

On the next day he sees Jesus coming toward him. And he says, “Look— the Lamb of God, the One taking-away the sin of the world.

This One is the One about Whom I said, ‘A man is coming after me Who has become ahead of me, because He was before me’.

And I did not know Him. But I came baptizing with water for this reason— that He might be revealed to Israel”.

And John testified, saying that “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven. And He remained upon Him.

And I did not know Him. But the One having sent me to baptize with water, that One said to me, ‘Upon whomever you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him— this One is the One baptizing with the Holy Spirit’.

And I have seen, and have testified that this One is the Son of God”.

On the next day John was again standing there, and two of his disciples.

And having looked at Jesus walking, he says, “Look— the Lamb of God”.

And the two disciples heard him speaking, and followed Jesus.

And Jesus, having turned and seen them following, says to them, “What are you seeking?” And the ones said to Him, “Rabbi (which being translated means “Teacher”), where are You staying?”

He says to them, “Come, and you will see”. So they went, and saw where He was staying, and stayed with Him that day. The hour was about the tenth.

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two having heard it from John, and having followed Him.

This one first finds his own brother Simon, and says to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which being translated is “Christ”).

He brought him to Jesus. Having looked-at him, Jesus said, “You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated “Peter”).

On the next day He wanted to go forth to Galilee. And He finds Philip. And Jesus says to him, “Be following Me”.

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.

Philip finds Nathanael and says to him, “We have found the One of whom Moses wrote in the Law, and the Prophets wrote— Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth”.

And Nathanael said to him, “Is anything good able to be out of Nazareth?” Philip says to him, “Come and see”.

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and says about him, “Look— truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit”.

Nathanael says to Him, “From where do You know me?” Jesus responded and said to him, “Before Philip called you, while being under the fig tree, I saw you”.

Nathanael responded to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel”.

Jesus responded and said to him, “Do you believe because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these!”

And He says to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you all, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man”.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by him: and without him was made nothing that was made.

In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

This man came for a witness, to give testimony of the light, that all men might believe through him.

He was not the light, but was to give testimony of the light.

That was the true light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world.

He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

But as many as received him, he gave them power to be made the sons of God, to them that believe in his name.

Who are born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we saw his glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John beareth witness of him, and crieth out, saying: This was he of whom I spoke: He that shall come after me, is preferred before me: because he was before me.

And of his fulness we all have received, and grace for grace.

For the law was given by Moses; grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

No man hath seen God at any time: the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent from Jerusalem priests and Levites to him, to ask him: Who art thou?

And he confessed, and did not deny: and he confessed: I am not the Christ.

And they asked him: What then? Art thou Elias? And he said: I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered: No.

They said therefore unto him: Who art thou, that we may give an answer to them that sent us? What sayest thou of thyself?

He said: I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaias.

And they that were sent, were of the Pharisees.

And they asked him, and said to him: Why then dost thou baptize, if thou be not Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet?

John answered them, saying: I baptize with water; but there hath stood one in the midst of you, whom you know not.

The same is he that shall come after me, who is preferred before me: the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to loose.

These things were done in Bethania, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

The next day, John saw Jesus coming to him, and he saith: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who taketh away the sin of the world.

This is he, of whom I said: After me there cometh a man, who is preferred before me: because he was before me.

And I knew him not, but that he may be made manifest in Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

And John gave testimony, saying: I saw the Spirit coming down, as a dove from heaven, and he remained upon him.

And I knew him not; but he who sent me to baptize with water, said to me: He upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining upon him, he it is that baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

And I saw, and I gave testimony, that this is the Son of God.

He saith to them: Come and see. They came, and saw where he abode, and they stayed with him that day: now it was about the tenth hour.

Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith to him: We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus the son of Joseph of Nazareth.

And Nathanael said to him: Can any thing of good come from Nazareth? Philip saith to him: Come and see.

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him: and he saith of him: Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile.

Nathanael saith to him: Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered, and said to him: Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

Nathanael answered him, and said: Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, thou art the King of Israel.

Jesus answered, and said to him: Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, thou believest: greater things than these shalt thou see.

And he saith to him: Amen, amen I say to you, you shall see the heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

Before the world began, the Word was there. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was there with God in the beginning.

Everything was made through him, and nothing was made without him.

In him there was life, and that life was a light for the people of the world.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not defeated it.

There was a man named John, who was sent by God.

He came to tell people about the light. Through him all people could hear about the light and believe.

John was not the light. But he came to tell people about the light.

The true light was coming into the world. This is the true light that gives light to all people.

The Word was already in the world. The world was made through him, but the world did not know him.

He came to the world that was his own. And his own people did not accept him.

But some people did accept him. They believed in him, and he gave them the right to become children of God.

They became God’s children, but not in the way babies are usually born. It was not because of any human desire or plan. They were born from God himself.

The Word became a man and lived among us. We saw his divine greatness—the greatness that belongs to the only Son of the Father. The Word was full of grace and truth.

John told people about him. He said loudly, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘The one who is coming after me is greater than I am, because he was living before I was even born.’”

Yes, the Word was full of grace and truth, and from him we all received one blessing after another.

That is, the law was given to us through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

No one has ever seen God. The only Son is the one who has shown us what God is like. He is himself God and is very close to the Father.

The Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent some priests and Levites to John to ask him, “Who are you?” He told them the truth.

Without any hesitation he said openly and plainly, “I am not the Messiah.”

They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He answered, “No, I am not Elijah.” They asked, “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No, I am not the Prophet.”

Then they said, “Who are you? Tell us about yourself. Give us an answer to tell the people who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

John told them the words of the prophet Isaiah: “I am the voice of someone shouting in the desert: ‘Make a straight road ready for the Lord.’”

These Jews were sent from the Pharisees.

They said to John, “You say you are not the Messiah. You say you are not Elijah or the Prophet. Then why do you baptize people?”

John answered, “I baptize people with water. But there is someone here with you that you don’t know.

He is the one who is coming later. I am not good enough to be the slave who unties the strings on his sandals.”

These things all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan River. This is where John was baptizing people.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God. He takes away the sins of the world!

This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘There is a man coming after me who is greater than I am, because he was living even before I was born.’

I did not know who he was. But I came baptizing people with water so that Israel could know that he is the Messiah.”

Then John said this for everyone to hear: “I also did not know who the Messiah was. But the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘You will see the Spirit come down and rest on a man. He is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen this happen. I saw the Spirit come down from heaven like a dove and rest on this man. So this is what I tell people: ‘He is the Son of God.’”

The next day John was there again and had two of his followers with him.

He saw Jesus walking by and said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

The two followers heard him say this, so they followed Jesus.

Jesus turned and saw the two men following him. He asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” (“Rabbi” means “Teacher.”)

He answered, “Come with me and you will see.” So the two men went with him. They saw the place where he was staying, and they stayed there with him that day. It was about four o’clock.

These men followed Jesus after they had heard about him from John. One of them was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter.

The first thing Andrew did was to go and find his brother Simon. Andrew said to him, “We have found the Messiah.” (“Messiah” means “Christ.”)

Then Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas.” (“Cephas” means “Peter.”)

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He met Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”

Philip was from the town of Bethsaida, the same as Andrew and Peter.

Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the man that Moses wrote about in the law. The prophets wrote about him too. He is Jesus, the son of Joseph. He is from Nazareth.”

But Nathanael said to Philip, “Nazareth! Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Philip answered, “Come and see.”

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said, “This man coming is a true Israelite, one you can trust.”

Nathanael asked, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you when you were under the fig tree, before Philip told you about me.”

Then Nathanael said, “Teacher, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel.”

Jesus said to him, “Do you believe this just because I said I saw you under the fig tree? You will see much greater things than that!”

Then he said, “Believe me when I say that you will all see heaven open. You will see ‘angels of God going up and coming down’ on the Son of Man.”

In the beginning, the Word was already there. The Word was with God. The Word was God.

He was with God from the beginning.

God made all things through the Word. God did not make anything without him.

It is the Word who caused everything to live. Because of this, he has brought light to all people.

The light shines in the dark, and the dark cannot put out the light.

God sent a man to bring his message. His name was John.

He came to tell people about the light. God wanted everyone to believe in the one who is the light.

John himself was not that light. God sent him to tell people about the light.

The true light gives light to every person. That light was now coming into the world.

The Word was now in the world. God had made the world through him. But the people in the world did not know who he was.

He came to his own place, but his own people did not accept him.

Some people did accept him and they believed in him. He gave authority to those people to become God's children.

They did not become God's children in the usual human way. They were not born because some people wanted to have children. They were not born because of what any man decided. No! They were born from God.

The Word became a man. He lived among us. We saw his great glory. He has the glory of the Father's one true Son. He is full of God's grace and truth.

John told people about the Word. He shouted, ‘This is the man that I told you about. He comes after me. But he is greater than I am. He was already there before I was born.’

The Word is full of everything that we need. We have all received one good thing after another good thing.

God gave his Law to us through Moses. But Jesus Christ brought God's grace and his truth to us.

Nobody has ever seen God. But God's only Son has shown God to us. He is very near to the Father, and he himself is God.

The Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask John, ‘Who are you?’

John did not refuse to answer. He said, ‘I am not the Messiah.’

So they asked him, ‘So who are you? Are you Elijah?’ John said, ‘No, I am not.’ They asked, ‘Are you the Prophet?’ John answered, ‘No.’

Then they said, ‘Tell us who you are. We must say something to the people who sent us. What do you say about yourself?’

He said, ‘I am the voice of somebody shouting in the wilderness: “The Lord will come soon. Make a straight path for him to follow.” That is what the prophet Isaiah said a long time ago.’

The men who came to ask these questions were Pharisees.

They said to John, ‘You say that you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet. So why do you baptize people?’

John replied, ‘I baptize people with water. But there is someone here among you that you do not know.

He is the one who comes after me. I am not good enough even to undo his shoes for him.’

All these things happened at a place east from the Jordan River. It was a village called Bethany. John was baptizing people there.

The next day, John saw Jesus, who was coming towards him. John said, ‘Look! Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of people in the world.

This is the man that I told you about. I told you, “He comes after me, but he is greater than I am. He was already there before I was born.”

I did not know him. But I had to show Israel's people who he was. That is why I am baptizing people with water.’

Then John told them, ‘I saw God's Spirit come down from heaven. He came down like a dove and he stayed on Jesus.

I would not have known who Jesus was. But God had sent me to baptize people with water. And God told me, “You will see the Spirit come down. He will stay on someone. That is the person who will baptize people with my Holy Spirit.”

Now I have seen this. So I can tell you that this is God's Son.’

John was standing there again the next day, with two of his disciples.

He saw Jesus, who was walking past them. John said, ‘Look! Here is the Lamb of God.’

When the two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus.

Then Jesus turned round. He saw that they were following him. He asked them, ‘What do you want?’ They said, ‘Rabbi (which means “Teacher”), where are you staying?’

Jesus replied, ‘Come with me and you will see.’ So they went with him. They saw where he was staying. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. And they stayed with him that day.

Andrew was one of the two disciples who had followed Jesus. They had heard what John had said about Jesus. Andrew was Simon Peter's brother.

The first thing that Andrew did was to find his brother, Simon. Andrew said to Simon, ‘We have found the Messiah.’ (‘Messiah’ and ‘Christ’ mean the same.)

Then he brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at Simon and he said, ‘You are Simon, John's son. Your name will be Cephas.’ This name is the same as Peter, which means ‘rock’.

The next day, Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He met Philip, and Jesus said to Philip, ‘Follow me.’

Philip, like Andrew and Peter, came from the town of Bethsaida.

Philip went to find Nathanael. He told Nathanael, ‘We have found the man that Moses wrote about in the book of God's Law. The prophets also wrote about him. He is Jesus, who is Joseph's son, from Nazareth.’

Nathanael said, ‘I did not think that anything good could come from Nazareth!’ Philip replied, ‘Come and see.’

Jesus saw Nathanael, who was coming towards him. Jesus said, ‘Here is a completely honest man. That is what a person from Israel should really be like.’

Nathanael asked, ‘How do you know me?’ Jesus answered, ‘I saw you before Philip asked you to come. I saw you when you were under the fig tree.’

Nathanael said, ‘Teacher, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel.’

Jesus said to him, ‘I told you that I saw you under the fig tree. Now you believe me because I told you that. But you will see much greater things than that.’

And Jesus said to him, ‘I tell you this: You will see heaven open. You will see God's angels. They will be going up and they will be coming down on the Son of Man.’

He told them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying. They stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour.

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus.

Nathanael said to him, “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” “Come and see!” Philip told him.

He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.

He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,

who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

(John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”)

And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.

For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.

And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”

And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”

So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord’, as the prophet Isaiah said.”

(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)

They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know,

even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”

These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

The next day he saw Jesus coming towards him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’

I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”

And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.

I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,

and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”

The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.

Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?”

He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).

He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!”

Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree’, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”

And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

In the beginning [Gen. 1:1] ·there was the Word [the Word already existed; ^Cthe Word refers to Christ, God’s revelation of himself]. The Word was ·with [in the presence of; in intimate relationship with] God [^Cthe Father], and the Word was [fully] God.

He was ·with [in the presence of; in intimate relationship with] God in the beginning.

All things ·were made [were created; came to be] ·by [through] him, and nothing ·was made [came to be] without him [Prov. 8:22–31].

·In him there was life [or What was made through him was life], and that life was the light of all people.

The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not ·overpowered [defeated; or understood; comprehended] it.

There was a man named John [^Cthe Baptist; Matt. 3; Luke 3] who was sent by God.

He came to ·tell people the truth [testify; bear witness] about the Light so that ·through him all people could hear about the Light and believe [^Leveryone might believe through him].

John was not the Light, but he came to ·tell people the truth [testify; bear witness] about the Light. *

The true Light that ·gives light to [shines on; illuminates; enlightens] all [people] was coming into the world! [or The true Light gives light to all who have come into the world.]

·The Word [^LHe] was in the world, and the world ·was made [was created; came into being] ·by [through] him, but the world did not ·know [recognize] him.

He came to ·the world that was his own [or his own country; ^Lthat which was his own], but his own people did not ·accept [receive] him.

But to all who did ·accept [receive] him and believe ·in him [^Lin his name; ^Cthe name indicating the character of the person] he gave the ·right [power; authority] to become children of God.

They did not become his children ·in any human way [by natural descent; by physical birth; ^Lby blood]—by ·any human parents [human passion/decision; ^Ldesire/will of the flesh] or ·human desire [a husband’s decision; ^Ldesire/will of a man/husband]. They were born of God.

The Word became ·a human [^Tflesh] and ·lived [made his home; pitched his tabernacle; ^CGod’s glorious presence dwelt in Israel’s tabernacle in the wilderness] among us. We saw his ·glory [majesty]—the glory that belongs to the ·only Son [one and only; ^Tonly begotten] ·of [who came from] the Father—and he was full of ·grace and truth [God’s gracious love and faithfulness; Ex. 34:5–7].

John ·tells the truth about [testifies concerning; witnesses about] him and cries out, saying, “This is the One I told you about: ‘The One who comes after me [^Cin time] is greater than I am, because he ·was living [existed] before me [^Ca reference to Christ’s preexistence; 1:1–2].’”

·Because he was full of grace and truth [^LFrom his fullness; 1:14], from him we all received ·one gift after another [^Lgrace for grace; ^Cthis could mean abundant grace or that the grace under Christ replaced grace under the law].

The law was given through Moses [Ex. 19—24], but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

No one has ever seen God [^CGod the Father, who is pure spirit; 4:24]. But ·God the only Son [God the one and only; the only Son who is himself God; ^TGod the only begotten] is ·very close to [by the side of; close to the heart of; ^Tin the bosom of] the Father, and he has ·shown us what God is like [made him known].

Here is the ·truth John told [testimony John gave; witness of John; 1:6] when the ·leaders [Jewish leadership; ^LJews; ^CJohn often uses the term “Jews” to refer to the religious leaders in opposition to Jesus, rather than to the Jewish people generally] in Jerusalem sent ·priests and Levites [^Cthe religious authorities; priests oversaw temple worship; Levites were members of the tribe of Levi who assisted them; 1 Chr. 23:24–32] to ask him, “Who are you?”

John ·spoke freely [confessed] and did not ·refuse to answer [deny it]. He said, “I am not the ·Christ [Messiah].”

So they asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” [^CElijah, an OT prophet, was expected to come back before the Messiah; 1 Kin. 17—2 Kin. 2; Mal. 4:5–6.] He answered, “No, I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” [^Cthe Prophet like Moses predicted in Deut. 18:15–19] they asked. He answered, “No.”

Then they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to tell those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

John told them in the words of the prophet Isaiah: “I am the voice of one calling out in the ·desert [wilderness]: ‘Make ·the road straight [a clear path] for the Lord [Is. 40:3].’”

Some Pharisees [^Ca religious party which strictly observed OT laws and later customs] who had been sent asked John:

“If you are not the ·Christ [Messiah] or Elijah or the Prophet [1:21], why do you baptize people?”

John answered, “I baptize with water, but there is one here with you that you don’t ·know about [recognize].

He is the One who comes after me. I am not ·good enough [worthy; fit] to untie the ·strings [straps] of his sandals.” [^CRemoving sandals was the task of a slave.]

This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan River [^Ca site east of the Jordan River, not the Bethany near Jerusalem], where John was baptizing people.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him. John said, “Look, the Lamb of God [^Clambs were used for sacrifice; Gen. 22:8], who takes away the sin of the world!

This is the One I was talking about [1:15] when I said, ‘A man will come after me, but he is greater than I am, because he ·was living [existed] before me.’

Even I did not ·know [recognize] who he was, although I came baptizing with water so that ·the people of Israel would know who he is [he might be revealed to Israel].”

Then John ·said [testified; bore witness], “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven in the form of a dove and ·rest [remain] on him. Until then I did not know ·who the Christ was [or he was the one; ^Lhim]. But the God who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘You will see the Spirit come down and ·rest [remain] on a man; he is the One who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’

I have seen this happen, and I ·tell you the truth [testify; bear witness]: This man is the Son of God.”

The next day John [^Cthe Baptist; 1:6] was [standing] there again with two of his ·followers [disciples].

When he saw Jesus walking by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God [see 1:29]!”

The two ·followers [disciples] heard John say this, so they followed Jesus.

When Jesus turned and saw them following him, he asked, “What are you looking for?” They said, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” (“Rabbi” means “Teacher.”)

He answered, “Come and see.” So the two men went with Jesus and saw where he was staying and stayed there with him that day. It was about ·four o’clock in the afternoon [^Lthe tenth hour; ^Chours were counted from dawn, about 6 AM].

One of the two men who followed Jesus after they heard John speak about him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and say to him, “We have found the Messiah.” (“Messiah” means “Christ.”) [^CBoth Hebrew Mashiach (Messiah) and Greek Christos (Christ) mean “Anointed One.”]

Then Andrew took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas.” (“Cephas” means “Peter.”) [^CBoth Aramaic Cephas and Greek Petros mean “rock.”]

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee [^Ca region about 50 miles north of Jerusalem]. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me [^Cas a disciple].”

Philip was from the town of Bethsaida [^Ca town just to the north of the Sea of Galilee], where Andrew and Peter lived.

Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the man that Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets also wrote about him. [^CThe law and the prophets refer to the OT Scriptures.] He is Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth [^Ca village a few miles southwest of the Sea of Galilee].”

But Nathanael said to Philip, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” [^CThis is because of its insignificance and lack of mention in the OT.] Philip answered, “Come and see.”

As Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said, “Here is truly an Israelite. There is ·nothing false [no deceit; no guile] in him.”

Nathanael asked, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you when you were under the fig tree, before Philip ·told you about me [^Lcalled you].”

Then Nathanael said to Jesus, “Teacher [^LRabbi], you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.”

Jesus said to Nathanael, “Do you believe simply because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than that.”

And Jesus said to them, “·I tell you the truth [^LTruly, truly I say to you], you will all see heaven open and ‘angels of God going up and coming down’ [^Ca reference to Jacob’s dream in Gen. 28:12] on the Son of Man [^Ca title for the Messiah; Dan. 7:13–14].”

That Word begotten of God before all worlds, 2 and which was ever with the Father, 14 is made man.  6, 7 For what end John was sent from God. 15 His preaching of Christ’s office. 19, 20 The record that he bare given out unto the Priests. 40 The calling of Andrew, 42 of Peter, 43 Philip, 45 and Nathanael. In the beginning was that Word, and that Word was with God, and that Word was God.

This same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by it, and without it was made nothing that was made.

In it was life, and that life was the light of men.

And that light shineth in the wilderness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not.

¶ There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

This same came for a witness, to bear witness of that light, that all men through him might believe.

He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light.

This was that true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

He was in the world, and the world was made by him: and the world knew him not.

He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

But as many as received him, to them he gave prerogative to be the sons of God, even to them that believe in his Name,

Which are born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

And that Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we saw the glory thereof, as the glory of the only begotten Son of the Father) full of grace and truth.

¶ John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I said, He that cometh after me, was before me: for he was better than I.

And of his fullness have all we received, and grace for grace.

For the Law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

No man hath seen God at any time: that only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

¶ Then this is the record of John, when the Jews sent Priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

And he confessed and denied not, and said plainly, I am not that Christ.

And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he said, I am not. Art thou that Prophet? And he answered, No.

Then said they unto him, Who art thou, that we may give an answer to them that sent us? What sayest thou of thyself?

He said, I am the voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the Prophet Isaiah.

Now they which were sent, were of the Pharisees.

And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, neither Elijah, nor that Prophet?

John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there is one among you, whom ye know not.

He it is that cometh after me, which was before me, whose shoe latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John did baptize.

¶ The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold that Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man, which was before me: for he was better than I.

And I knew him not: but because he should be declared to Israel, therefore am I come, baptizing with water.

So John bare record, saying, I beheld, that Spirit come down from heaven, like a dove, and it abode upon him,

And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, he said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see that Spirit come down, and tarry still on him, that is he which baptizeth with the holy Ghost.

And I saw, and bare record that this is that Son of God.

¶ The next day, John stood again, and two of his disciples.

And he beheld Jesus walking by, and said, Behold that Lamb of God.

And the two disciples heard him speak, and followed Jesus.

Then Jesus turned about, and saw them follow, and said unto them, What seek ye? And they said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say by interpretation, Master) where dwellest thou?

He said unto them, Come, and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two which had heard it of John, and that followed him.

The same found his brother Simon first, and said unto him, We have found that Messiah which is by interpretation, that Christ.

And he brought him to Jesus. And Jesus beheld him, and said, Thou art Simon the son of Jonah: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation a stone.

¶ The day following, Jesus would go into Galilee, and found Philip, and said unto him, Follow me.

Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

Philip found Nathanael, and said unto him, We have found him of whom Moses did write in the Law, and the Prophets, Jesus that Son of Joseph, that was of Nazareth.

Then Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come, and see.

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, Behold indeed an Israelite, in whom is no guile.

Nathanael said unto him, Whence knewest thou me? Jesus answered, and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

Nathanael answered, and said unto him, Rabbi, thou art that Son of God: thou art that King of Israel.

Jesus answered, and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

And he said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see heaven open, and the Angels of God ascending, and descending upon that Son of man.

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was already with God in the beginning.

Everything came into existence through him. Not one thing that exists was made without him.

He was the source of life, and that life was the light for humanity.

The light shines in the dark, and the dark has never extinguished it.

God sent a man named John to be his messenger.

John came to declare the truth about the light so that everyone would become believers through his message.

John was not the light, but he came to declare the truth about the light.

The real light, which shines on everyone, was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world came into existence through him. Yet, the world didn’t recognize him.

He went to his own people, and his own people didn’t accept him.

However, he gave the right to become God’s children to everyone who believed in him.

These people didn’t become God’s children in a physical way—from a human impulse or from a husband’s desire ⌞to have a child⌟. They were born from God.

The Word became human and lived among us. We saw his glory. It was the glory that the Father shares with his only Son, a glory full of kindness  and truth.

(John declared the truth about him when he said loudly, “This is the person about whom I said, ‘The one who comes after me was before me because he existed before I did.’ ”)

Each of us has received one gift after another because of all that the Word is.

Laws were given through Moses, but kindness and truth came into existence through Jesus Christ.

No one has ever seen God. God’s only Son, the one who is closest to the Father’s heart, has made him known.

This was John’s answer when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

John didn’t refuse to answer. He told them clearly, “I’m not the Messiah.”

They asked him, “Well, are you Elijah?” John answered, “No, I’m not.” Then they asked, “Are you the prophet?” John replied, “No.”

So they asked him, “Who are you? Tell us so that we can take an answer back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

John said, “I’m a voice crying out in the desert, ‘Make the way for the Lord straight,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

Some of those who had been sent were Pharisees.

They asked John, “Why do you baptize if you’re not the Messiah or Elijah or the prophet?”

John answered them, “I baptize with water. Someone you don’t know is standing among you.

He’s the one who comes after me. I am not worthy to untie his sandal strap.”

This happened in Bethany on the east side of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing.

John saw Jesus coming toward him the next day and said, “Look! This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

He is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘A man who comes after me was before me because he existed before I did.’

I didn’t know who he was. However, I came to baptize with water to show him to the people of Israel.”

John said, “I saw the Spirit come down as a dove from heaven and stay on him.

I didn’t know who he was. But God, who sent me to baptize with water, had told me, ‘When you see the Spirit come down and stay on someone, you’ll know that person is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

I have seen this and have declared that this is the Son of God.”

The next day John was standing with two of his disciples.

John saw Jesus walk by. John said, “Look! This is the Lamb of God.”

When the two disciples heard John say this, they followed Jesus.

Jesus turned around and saw them following him. He asked them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which means “teacher”), “where are you staying?”

Jesus told them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went to see where he was staying and spent the rest of that day with him. It was about ten o’clock in the morning.

(Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter.)

Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the man whom Moses wrote about in his teachings and whom the prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, son of Joseph, from the city of Nazareth.”

Nathanael said to Philip, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Philip told him, “Come and see!”

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and remarked, “Here is a true Israelite who is sincere.”

Nathanael asked Jesus, “How do you know anything about me?” Jesus answered him, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

Nathanael said to Jesus, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the king of Israel!”

Jesus replied, “You believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”

Jesus said to Nathanael, “I can guarantee this truth: You will see the sky open and God’s angels going up and coming down to the Son of Man.”

In the beginning the Word already existed; the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

From the very beginning the Word was with God.

Through him God made all things; not one thing in all creation was made without him.

The Word was the source of life, and this life brought light to people.

The Jewish authorities in Jerusalem sent some priests and Levites to John to ask him, “Who are you?”

John did not refuse to answer, but spoke out openly and clearly, saying: “I am not the Messiah.”

“Who are you, then?” they asked. “Are you Elijah?” “No, I am not,” John answered. “Are you the Prophet?” they asked. “No,” he replied.

“Then tell us who you are,” they said. “We have to take an answer back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

John answered by quoting the prophet Isaiah: “I am ‘the voice of someone shouting in the desert: Make a straight path for the Lord to travel!’”

The messengers, who had been sent by the Pharisees,

then asked John, “If you are not the Messiah nor Elijah nor the Prophet, why do you baptize?”

John answered, “I baptize with water, but among you stands the one you do not know.

He is coming after me, but I am not good enough even to untie his sandals.”

All this happened in Bethany on the east side of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing.

I still did not know that he was the one, but God, who sent me to baptize with water, had said to me, ‘You will see the Spirit come down and stay on a man; he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

I have seen it,” said John, “and I tell you that he is the Son of God.”

The next day John was standing there again with two of his disciples,

when he saw Jesus walking by. “There is the Lamb of God!” he said.

The two disciples heard him say this and went with Jesus.

Jesus turned, saw them following him, and asked, “What are you looking for?” They answered, “Where do you live, Rabbi?” (This word means “Teacher.”)

“Come and see,” he answered. (It was then about four o'clock in the afternoon.) So they went with him and saw where he lived, and spent the rest of that day with him.

At once he found his brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah.” (This word means “Christ.”)

Then he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “Your name is Simon son of John, but you will be called Cephas.” (This is the same as Peter and means “a rock.”)

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Come with me!”

( Philip was from Bethsaida, the town where Andrew and Peter lived.)

Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one whom Moses wrote about in the book of the Law and whom the prophets also wrote about. He is Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”

“Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” answered Philip.

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, he said about him, “Here is a real Israelite; there is nothing false in him!”

Nathanael asked him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you when you were under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

“Teacher,” answered Nathanael, “you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

Jesus said, “Do you believe just because I told you I saw you when you were under the fig tree? You will see much greater things than this!”

And he said to them, “I am telling you the truth: you will see heaven open and God's angels going up and coming down on the Son of Man.”

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was with God in the beginning.

All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created.

Life was in Him, and that life was the light of men.

That light shines in the darkness, yet the darkness did not overcome it.

There was a man named John who was sent from God.

He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him.

He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.

The true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world was created through Him, yet the world did not recognize Him.

He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him.

But to all who did receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name,

who were born, not of blood, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.

The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

(John testified concerning Him and exclaimed, “This was the One of whom I said, ‘The One coming after me has surpassed me, because He existed before me.’”)

Indeed, we have all received grace after grace from His fullness,

for the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

No one has ever seen God. The One and Only Son— the One who is at the Father’s side— He has revealed Him.

This is John’s testimony when the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you?”

He did not refuse to answer, but he declared: “I am not the Messiah.”

“What then?” they asked him. “Are you Elijah?” “I am not,” he said. “Are you the Prophet?” “No,” he answered.

“Who are you, then?” they asked. “We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself?”

He said, “I am a voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord—just as Isaiah the prophet said.”

Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.

So they asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?”

“I baptize with water,” John answered them. “Someone stands among you, but you don’t know Him.

He is the One coming after me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to untie.”

All this happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

This is the One I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who has surpassed me, because He existed before me.’

I didn’t know Him, but I came baptizing with water so He might be revealed to Israel.”

And John testified, “I watched the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He rested on Him.

I didn’t know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The One you see the Spirit descending and resting on—He is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

I have seen and testified that He is the Son of God!”

Again the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples.

When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look! The Lamb of God!”

The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus.

When Jesus turned and noticed them following Him, He asked them, “What are you looking for?” They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are You staying?”

“Come and you’ll see,” He replied. So they went and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day. It was about 10 in the morning.

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed Him.

He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which means “Anointed One”),

and he brought Simon to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, He said, “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which means “Rock”).

The next day He decided to leave for Galilee. Jesus found Philip and told him, “Follow Me!”

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter.

Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the One Moses wrote about in the Law (and so did the prophets): Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth!”

“Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathanael asked him. “Come and see,” Philip answered.

Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him and said about him, “Here is a true Israelite; no deceit is in him.”

“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered.

“Rabbi,” Nathanael replied, “You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe only because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.”

Then He said, “I assure you: You will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Before the world began, there was the Word. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was with God in the beginning.

All things were made through him. Nothing was made without him.

In him there was life. That life was light for the people of the world.

The Light shines in the darkness. And the darkness has not overpowered the Light.

There was a man named John who was sent by God.

He came to tell people about the Light. Through him all people could hear about the Light and believe.

John was not the Light, but he came to tell people about the Light.

The true Light was coming into the world. The true Light gives light to all.

The Word was in the world. The world was made through him, but the world did not know him.

He came to the world that was his own. But his own people did not accept him.

But some people did accept him. They believed in him. To them he gave the right to become children of God.

They did not become his children in the human way. They were not born because of the desire or wish of some man. They were born of God.

The Word became a man and lived among us. We saw his glory—the glory that belongs to the only Son of the Father. The Word was full of grace and truth.

John told about him. He said, “This is the One I was talking about. I said, ‘The One who comes after me is greater than I am. He was living before me.’”

The Word was full of grace and truth. From him we all received more and more blessings.

The law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

No man has ever seen God. But God the only Son is very close to the Father. And the Son has shown us what God is like.

The Jews in Jerusalem sent some priests and Levites to John. The Jews sent them to ask, “Who are you?”

John spoke freely and did not refuse to answer. He said clearly, “I am not the Christ.”

So they asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He answered, “No, I am not Elijah.” Then they asked, “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No, I am not the Prophet.”

Then they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to tell those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

John told them in the words of the prophet Isaiah: “I am the voice of a man calling out in the desert: ‘Make the road straight for the Lord.’” Isaiah 40:3

In the group of Jews who were sent, there were some Pharisees.

They said to John: “You say you are not the Christ. You say you are not Elijah or the Prophet. Then why do you baptize people?”

John answered, “I baptize people with water. But there is one here with you that you don’t know.

He is the One who comes after me. I am not good enough to untie the strings of his sandals.”

This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan River. This is where John was baptizing people.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him. John said, “Look, the Lamb of God. He takes away the sins of the world!

This is the One I was talking about. I said, ‘A man will come after me, but he is greater than I am, because he was living before me.’

Even I did not know who he was. But I came baptizing with water so that the people of Israel could know who he is.”

Then John said, “I did not know who the Christ was. But God sent me to baptize with water. And God told me, ‘You will see the Spirit come down and rest on a man. That man is the One who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’” John said, “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven. The Spirit looked like a dove and rested on him.

I have seen this happen. So I tell people: ‘He is the Son of God.’”

The next day John was there again with two of his followers.

He saw Jesus walking by and said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

The two followers heard John say this. So they followed Jesus.

Jesus turned and saw them following him. He asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” (“Rabbi” means “Teacher.”)

Jesus answered, “Come with me and you will see.” So the two men went with Jesus. They saw the place where Jesus was staying and stayed there with him that day. It was then about four o’clock.

These two men followed Jesus after they heard about him from John. One of the men was Andrew. He was Simon Peter’s brother.

The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother, Simon. He said to Simon, “We have found the Messiah.” (“Messiah” means “Christ.”)

Then Andrew took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at Simon and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas.” (“Cephas” means “Peter.”)

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”

Philip was from the town of Bethsaida, where Andrew and Peter lived.

Philip found Nathanael and told him, “Remember that Moses wrote in the law about a man who was coming, and the prophets also wrote about him. We have found him. He is Jesus, the son of Joseph. He is from Nazareth.”

But Nathanael said to Philip, “Nazareth! Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Philip answered, “Come and see.”

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him. He said, “Here is truly a person of Israel. There is nothing false in him.”

Nathanael asked, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you when you were under the fig tree. That was before Philip told you about me.”

Then Nathanael said to Jesus, “Teacher, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel.”

Jesus said to Nathanael, “You believe in me because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. But you will see greater things than that!”

And Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth. You will all see heaven open. You will see ‘angels of God going up and coming down’ on the Son of Man.”

He existed in the beginning with God.

Through him all things were made, and apart from him nothing was made that has been made.

In him was life, and that life brought light to humanity.

And the light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe because of him.

John was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.

This was the true light that enlightens every person by his coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world was made through him. Yet the world did not recognize him.

He came to his own creation, yet his own people did not receive him.

However, to all who received him, those believing in his name, he gave authority to become God’s children,

who were born, not merely in a genetic sense, nor from lust, nor from man’s desire, but from the will of God.

The Word became flesh and lived among us. We gazed on his glory, the kind of glory that belongs to the Father’s uniquely existing Son, who is full of grace and truth.

John told the truth about him when he cried out, “This is the person about whom I said, ‘The one who comes after me ranks higher than me, because he existed before me.’”

We have all received one gracious gift after another from his abundance,

because while the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus the Messiah.

No one has ever seen God. The uniquely existing God, who is close to the Father’s side, has revealed him.

This was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and descendants of Levi to him from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

He spoke openly and, remaining true to himself, admitted, “I am not the Messiah.”

So they asked him, “Well then, are you Elijah?” John said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”

“Who are you?” they asked him. “We must give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

He replied, “I am ‘…a voice crying out in the wilderness, “Prepare the Lord’s highway,”’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

Now those men had been sent from the Pharisees.

They asked him, “Why, then, are you baptizing if you are not the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?”

John answered them, “I am baptizing with water, but among you stands a man whom you do not know,

the one who is coming after me, whose sandal straps I am not worthy to untie.”

The next day, John was standing there again with two of his disciples.

As he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.

But when Jesus turned around and saw them following, he asked them, “What are you looking for?” They asked him, “Rabbi,” (which is translated “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

He told them, “Come and see!” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon.

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus.

The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and say to him, “We have found the Anointed One!” (which is translated “Messiah”).

He led Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him intently and said, “You are Simon, John’s son. You will be called Cephas!” (which is translated “Peter”).

The next day, Jesus decided to go away to Galilee, where he found Philip and told him, “Follow me.”

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter.

Philip found Nathaniel and told him, “We have found the man about whom Moses in the Law and the Prophets wrote—Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”

Nathaniel asked him, “From Nazareth? Can anything good come from there?” Philip told him, “Come and see!”

Jesus saw Nathaniel coming toward him and said about him, “Look, a genuine Israeli, in whom there is no deceit!”

Nathaniel asked him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, while you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

Nathaniel replied to him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

Jesus told him, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than that.”

Then he told him, “Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, you will see heaven standing open and the angels of God going up and coming down to the Son of Man.”

At the beginning God expressed himself. That personal expression, that word, was with God, and was God, and he existed with God from the beginning. All creation took place through him, and none took place without him. In him appeared life and this life was the light of mankind. The light still shines in the darkness and the darkness has never put it out.

A man called John was sent by God as a witness to the light, so that any man who heard his testimony might believe in the light. This man was not himself the light: he was sent simply as a personal witness to that light.

That was the true light which shines upon every man as he comes into the world. He came into the world—the world he had created—and the world failed to recognise him. He came into his own creation, and his own people would not accept him. Yet wherever men did accept him he gave them the power to become sons of God. These were the men who truly believed in him, and their birth depended not on the course of nature nor on any impulse or plan of man, but on God.

So the word of God became a human being and lived among us. We saw his splendour (the splendour as of a father’s only son), full of grace and truth. And it was about him that John stood up and testified, exclaiming: “Here is the one I was speaking about when I said that although he would come after me he would always be in front of me; for he existed before I was born!” Indeed, every one of us has shared in his riches—there is a grace in our lives because of his grace. For while the Law was given by Moses, love and truth came through Jesus Christ. It is true that no one has ever seen God at any time. Yet the divine and only Son, who lives in the closest intimacy with the Father, has made him known.

This then is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. He admitted with complete candour, “I am not Christ.”

So they asked him, “Who are you then? Are you Elijah?” “No, I am not,” he replied. “Are you the Prophet?” “No,” he replied.

“Well, then,” they asked again, “who are you? We want to give an answer to the people who sent us. What would you call yourself?”

“I am ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

Now some of the Pharisees had been sent to John, and they questioned him, “What is the reason, then, for your baptising people if you are not Christ and not Elijah and not the Prophet?”

To which John returned, “I do baptise—with water. But somewhere among you stands a man you do not know. He comes after me, it is true, but I am not fit to undo his shoes!” (All this happened in the Bethany on the far side of the Jordan where the baptisms of John took place.)

On the following day, John saw Jesus coming towards him and said, “Look, there is the lamb of God who will take away the sins of the world! This is the man I meant when I said, ‘A man comes after me who is always in front of me, for he existed before I was born!’ It is true I have not known him, yet it was to make him known to the people of Israel that I came and baptised people with water.”

Then John gave this testimony, “I have seen the Spirit come down like a dove from Heaven and rest upon him. Indeed, it is true that I did not recognise him by myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water told me this: ‘The one on whom you will see the Spirit coming down and resting is the man who baptises with the Holy Spirit!’ Now I have seen this happen and I declare publicly before you all that he is the Son of God!”

On the following day John was again standing with two of his disciples. He looked straight at Jesus as he walked along, and said, “There is the lamb of God!”

The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Then Jesus turned round and when he saw them following him, spoke to them. “What do you want?” he said. “Master, where are you staying?” they replied.

“Come and see,” returned Jesus. So they went and saw where he was staying and remained with him the rest of that day. (It was then about four o’clock in the afternoon.) One of the two men who had heard what John said and had followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He went straight off and found his own brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah!” (meaning, of course, Christ).

And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked steadily at him and said, “You are Simon, the son of John. From now on your name is Cephas”—(that is, Peter, meaning “a rock”).

The following day Jesus decided to go into Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me!” Philip was a man from Bethsaida, the town that Andrew and Peter came from. Now Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have discovered the man whom Moses wrote about in the Law and about whom the Prophets wrote too. He is Jesus, the son of Joseph and comes from Nazareth.”

“Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” retorted Nathanael. “You come and see,” replied Philip.

Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him and remarked, “Now here is a true man of Israel; there is no deceit in him!”

“How can you know me?” returned Nathanael. “When you were underneath that fig-tree,” replied Jesus, “before Philip called you, I saw you.”

At which Nathanael exclaimed, “Master, you are the Son of God, you are the king of Israel!”

“Do you believe in me,” replied Jesus, “because I said I had seen you underneath that fig-tree? You are going to see something greater than that! Believe me,” he added, “I tell you all that you will see Heaven wide open and God’s angels ascending and descending around the Son of Man!”

And I knew him not; but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

And John gave testimony, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

And I knew him not; but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on him, the same is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

And I have seen and have given testimony that this is the Son of God.

And again the next day John stood, and two of his disciples,

and looking upon Jesus as he walked, he said, Behold the Lamb of God!

¶ And the two disciples heard him speak and followed Jesus.

Then Jesus turned and saw them following and said unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi (which is to say, being interpreted, Master), where dwellest thou?

He said unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt and abode with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, brother of Simon Peter.

He first found his own brother Simon and said unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jonah: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

¶ The day following Jesus desired to go forth into Galilee and found Philip and said unto him, Follow me.

Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

Philip found Nathanael and said unto him, We have found him of whom Moses in the law and the prophets wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

And Nathanael said unto him, Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip said unto him, Come and see.

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him and said of him, Behold a true Israelite, in whom is no guile!

Nathanael said unto him, From where dost thou know me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.

Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!

Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

he it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

I did not know Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing with water.”

And John bore witness saying, “I have beheld the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He abided on Him.

And I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The One upon whom you see the Spirit descending and abiding on Him, this is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

And I myself have seen, and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

On the next day, John again was standing with two of his disciples,

and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”

And the two disciples heard him speak and followed Jesus.

And when Jesus turned and noticed them following, He *said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?”

He *said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day. It was about the tenth hour.

One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

He first *found his own brother Simon and *said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which translated means Christ).

He brought him to Jesus. When Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of John; you shall be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

On the next day, He desired to go into Galilee, and He *found Philip. And Jesus *said to him, “Follow Me.”

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

Philip *found Nathanael and *said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

And Nathanael said to him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip *said to him, “Come and see.”

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and *said about him, “Behold, truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!”

Nathanael *said to Him, “From where do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

Nathanael answered Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.”

Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”

And He *said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

The true light, who gives light to every person, was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, and the world did not recognize him.

He came to his own things, and his own people did not receive him.

But as many as received him—to those who believe in his name—he gave to them authority to become children of God,

who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a husband, but of God.

And the Word became flesh and took up residence among us, and we saw his glory, glory as of the one and only from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John testified about him and cried out, saying, “This one was he about whom I said, ‘The one who comes after me is ahead of me, because he existed before me.’”

For from his fullness we have all received, and grace after grace.

For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came about through Jesus Christ.

No one has seen God at any time; the one and only, God, the one who is in the bosom of the Father—that one has made him known.

And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem so that they could ask him, “Who are you?”

And he confessed—and he did not deny, and confessed—“I am not the Christ!”

And I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water, that one said to me, ‘The one upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him—this one is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

And I have seen and testify that this one is the Chosen One of God.

On the next day again John was standing there, and two of his disciples,

and looking at Jesus as he was walking by, he said, “Look! The Lamb of God!”

And the two disciples heard him speaking, and they followed Jesus.

And Jesus, turning around and seeing them following him, said to them, “What do you seek?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means when translated “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

He said to them, “Come and you will see!” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day (it was about the tenth hour).

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed him.

This one first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which is translated “Christ”).

He brought him to Jesus. Looking at him, Jesus said, “You are Simon the son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is interpreted “Peter”).

On the next day he wanted to depart for Galilee, and he found Philip. And Jesus said to him, “Follow me!”

(Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.)

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found the one whom Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets wrote about—Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth!”

And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see!”

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Look! A true Israelite in whom is no deceit!”

Nathanael said to him, “From where do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the king of Israel!”

And he said to him, “Truly, truly I say to all of you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

Before anything else existed, there was Christ, with God. He has always been alive and is himself God.

He created everything there is—nothing exists that he didn’t make.

Eternal life is in him, and this life gives light to all mankind.

His life is the light that shines through the darkness—and the darkness can never extinguish it.

God sent John the Baptist as a witness to the fact that Jesus Christ is the true Light.

John himself was not the Light; he was only a witness to identify it.

Later on, the one who is the true Light arrived to shine on everyone coming into the world.

But although he made the world, the world didn’t recognize him when he came.

Even in his own land and among his own people, the Jews, he was not accepted. Only a few would welcome and receive him. But to all who received him, he gave the right to become children of God. All they needed to do was to trust him to save them.

All those who believe this are reborn!—not a physical rebirth resulting from human passion or plan—but from the will of God.

And Christ became a human being and lived here on earth among us and was full of loving forgiveness and truth. And some of us have seen his glory—the glory of the only Son of the heavenly Father!

John pointed him out to the people, telling the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming who is greater by far than I am—for he existed long before I did!’”

We have all benefited from the rich blessings he brought to us—blessing upon blessing heaped upon us!

For Moses gave us only the Law with its rigid demands and merciless justice, while Jesus Christ brought us loving forgiveness as well.

No one has ever actually seen God, but, of course, his only Son has, for he is the companion of the Father and has told us all about him.

The Jewish leaders sent priests and assistant priests from Jerusalem to ask John whether he claimed to be the Messiah.

He denied it flatly. “I am not the Christ,” he said.

“Well then, who are you?” they asked. “Are you Elijah?” “No,” he replied. “Are you the Prophet?” “No.”

“Then who are you? Tell us, so we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you have to say for yourself?”

He replied, “I am a voice from the barren wilderness, shouting as Isaiah prophesied, ‘Get ready for the coming of the Lord!’”

Then those who were sent by the Pharisees asked him, “If you aren’t the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet, what right do you have to baptize?”

John told them, “I merely baptize with water, but right here in the crowd is someone you have never met,

who will soon begin his ministry among you, and I am not even fit to be his slave.”

This incident took place at Bethany, a village on the other side of the Jordan River where John was baptizing.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! There is the Lamb of God who takes away the world’s sin!

He is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Soon a man far greater than I am is coming, who existed long before me!’

I didn’t know he was the one, but I am here baptizing with water in order to point him out to the nation of Israel.”

Then John told about seeing the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove descending from heaven and resting upon Jesus.

“I didn’t know he was the one,” John said again, “but at the time God sent me to baptize he told me, ‘When you see the Holy Spirit descending and resting upon someone—he is the one you are looking for. He is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

I saw it happen to this man, and I therefore testify that he is the Son of God.”

The following day as John was standing with two of his disciples,

Jesus walked by. John looked at him intently and then declared, “See! There is the Lamb of God!”

Then John’s two disciples turned and followed Jesus.

Jesus looked around and saw them following. “What do you want?” he asked them. “Sir,” they replied, “where do you live?”

“Come and see,” he said. So they went with him to the place where he was staying and were with him from about four o’clock that afternoon until the evening.

(One of these men was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.)

Andrew then went to find his brother Peter and told him, “We have found the Messiah!”

And he brought Peter to meet Jesus. Jesus looked intently at Peter for a moment and then said, “You are Simon, John’s son—but you shall be called Peter, the rock!”

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and told him, “Come with me.”

(Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peter’s hometown.)

Philip now went off to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the Messiah!—the very person Moses and the prophets told about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth!”

“Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from there?” “Just come and see for yourself,” Philip declared.

As they approached, Jesus said, “Here comes an honest man—a true son of Israel.”

“How do you know what I am like?” Nathanael demanded. And Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.”

Nathanael replied, “Sir, you are the Son of God—the King of Israel!”

Jesus asked him, “Do you believe all this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater proofs than this.

You will even see heaven open and the angels of God coming back and forth to me, the Messiah.”

The Word was first, the Word present to God, God present to the Word. The Word was God, in readiness for God from day one.

Everything was created through him; nothing—not one thing!— came into being without him. What came into existence was Life, and the Life was Light to live by. The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness; the darkness couldn’t put it out.

There once was a man, his name John, sent by God to point out the way to the Life-Light. He came to show everyone where to look, who to believe in. John was not himself the Light; he was there to show the way to the Light.

The Life-Light was the real thing: Every person entering Life he brings into Light. He was in the world, the world was there through him, and yet the world didn’t even notice. He came to his own people, but they didn’t want him. But whoever did want him, who believed he was who he claimed and would do what he said, He made to be their true selves, their child-of-God selves. These are the God-begotten, not blood-begotten, not flesh-begotten, not sex-begotten.

The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son, Generous inside and out, true from start to finish.

John pointed him out and called, “This is the One! The One I told you was coming after me but in fact was ahead of me. He has always been ahead of me, has always had the first word.”

We all live off his generous abundance, gift after gift after gift. We got the basics from Moses, and then this exuberant giving and receiving, This endless knowing and understanding— all this came through Jesus, the Messiah. No one has ever seen God, not so much as a glimpse. This one-of-a-kind God-Expression, who exists at the very heart of the Father, has made him plain as day.

When Jews from Jerusalem sent a group of priests and officials to ask John who he was, he was completely honest. He didn’t evade the question. He told the plain truth: “I am not the Messiah.”

They pressed him, “Who, then? Elijah?” “I am not.” “The Prophet?” “No.”

Exasperated, they said, “Who, then? We need an answer for those who sent us. Tell us something—anything!—about yourself.”

“I’m thunder in the desert: ‘Make the road straight for God!’ I’m doing what the prophet Isaiah preached.”

Those sent to question him were from the Pharisee party. Now they had a question of their own: “If you’re neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet, why do you baptize?”

John answered, “I only baptize using water. A person you don’t recognize has taken his stand in your midst. He comes after me, but he is not in second place to me. I’m not even worthy to hold his coat for him.”

These conversations took place in Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing at the time.

The very next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and yelled out, “Here he is, God’s Passover Lamb! He forgives the sins of the world! This is the man I’ve been talking about, ‘the One who comes after me but is really ahead of me.’ I knew nothing about who he was—only this: that my task has been to get Israel ready to recognize him as the God-Revealer. That is why I came here baptizing with water, giving you a good bath and scrubbing sins from your life so you can get a fresh start with God.”

John clinched his witness with this: “I watched the Spirit, like a dove flying down out of the sky, making himself at home in him. I repeat, I know nothing about him except this: The One who authorized me to baptize with water told me, ‘The One on whom you see the Spirit come down and stay, this One will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ That’s exactly what I saw happen, and I’m telling you, there’s no question about it: This is the Son of God.”

The next day John was back at his post with two disciples, who were watching. He looked up, saw Jesus walking nearby, and said, “Here he is, God’s Passover Lamb.”

The two disciples heard him and went after Jesus. Jesus looked over his shoulder and said to them, “What are you after?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

He replied, “Come along and see for yourself.” They came, saw where he was living, and ended up staying with him for the day. It was late afternoon when this happened.

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John’s witness and followed Jesus. The first thing he did after finding where Jesus lived was find his own brother, Simon, telling him, “We’ve found the Messiah” (that is, “Christ”). He immediately led him to Jesus. Jesus took one look up and said, “You’re John’s son, Simon? From now on your name is Cephas” (or Peter, which means “Rock”).

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. When he got there, he ran across Philip and said, “Come, follow me.” (Philip’s hometown was Bethsaida, the same as Andrew and Peter.)

Philip went and found Nathanael and told him, “We’ve found the One Moses wrote of in the Law, the One preached by the prophets. It’s Jesus, Joseph’s son, the one from Nazareth!” Nathanael said, “Nazareth? You’ve got to be kidding.” But Philip said, “Come, see for yourself.”

When Jesus saw him coming he said, “There’s a real Israelite, not a false bone in his body.”

Nathanael said, “Where did you get that idea? You don’t know me.” Jesus answered, “One day, long before Philip called you here, I saw you under the fig tree.”

Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi! You are the Son of God, the King of Israel!”

Jesus said, “You’ve become a believer simply because I say I saw you one day sitting under the fig tree? You haven’t seen anything yet! Before this is over you’re going to see heaven open and God’s angels descending to the Son of Man and ascending again.”

All things were created through Him, and without Him nothing was created that was created.

In Him was life, and the life was the light of mankind.

The light shines in darkness, but the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John.

This man came as a witness in order to testify concerning the Light, that all men through Him might believe.

He was not this Light, but was sent in order to testify concerning the Light.

The true Light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world was created through Him, yet the world did not know Him.

He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him.

Yet to all who received Him, He gave the power to become sons of God, to those who believed in His name,

who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, the glory as the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.

John bore witness of Him and cried out, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ ”

We have all received from His fullness grace upon grace.

For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

No one has seen God at any time. The only Son, who is at the Father’s side, has made Him known.

Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”

They asked him, “Who then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”

They said to him then, “Who are you? Tell us so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say concerning yourself?”

John said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ just as the prophet Isaiah said.”

Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees.

They asked him, “Why do you baptize then, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

John answered them, “I baptize with water, but One stands among you, whom you do not know.

This is He who comes after me, who is preferred before me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”

These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.

This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’

I did not know Him, but for this reason I came baptizing with water: so that He might be revealed to Israel.”

Then John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on Him.

I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The One on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

I have seen and have borne witness that He is the Son of God.”

Again, the next day John was standing with two of his disciples.

Looking upon Jesus as He walked, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

Then Jesus turned, saw them following, and said to them, “What do you seek?” And they said to Him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are You staying?”

Jesus said to them, “Come and see.” So they came and saw where He stayed and remained with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means the Christ).

Then he brought him to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, He said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).

The next day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip, and said to him, “Follow Me.”

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, as well as the prophets, wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

Nathanael said to him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him and said concerning him, “Here is an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile.”

Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

Nathanael answered Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”

And He said to him, “Truly, truly I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

I myself saw it, and I bear witness that this man is the Chosen One of God.”

Again, on the following day, John was standing · there with two of · his disciples.

· Looking intently at · Jesus as he walked about, John said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”

· The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed · Jesus.

When Jesus turned around · · and saw them following him, he said to them, “What do you want?” They · said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him · that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two disciples who heard John and followed Jesus.

The first thing he did was to find · his own brother · Simon and say to him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which is translated “Christ”).

He brought him to · Jesus. Jesus looked at him · intently and said, “You are Simon, the son of John; you will be called Cephas” (which is translated “Peter”).

The following day Jesus decided to go to · Galilee, and he met Philip. And Jesus said to him, · “Follow me.”

Now Philip was · from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.

Philip found · Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one of whom Moses wrote in the law, and of whom the prophets wrote—Jesus, the son of Joseph, a man from Nazareth.”

And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, · “Come and see.”

Jesus saw · · Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true Israelite, one in whom there is no deceit!”

Nathanael asked him, “How did you get to know me?” Jesus answered him, · saying, “Before · Philip called you, while you were still under the fig tree, I saw you.”

Nathanael declared to him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the king of Israel!”

Jesus responded, · saying to him, “Is it because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree that you believe? You will see greater things than that.”

Then he said to him, “I tell you the solemn truth: you will see · heaven standing open and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was already with God in the beginning.

Everything came into existence through him. Not one thing that exists was made without him.

He was the source of life, and that life was the light for humanity.

The light shines in the dark, and the dark has never extinguished it.

God sent a man named John to be his messenger.

John came to declare the truth about the light so that everyone would become believers through his message.

John was not the light, but he came to declare the truth about the light.

The real light, which shines on everyone, was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world came into existence through him. Yet, the world didn’t recognize him.

He went to his own people, and his own people didn’t accept him.

However, he gave the right to become God’s children to everyone who believed in him.

These people didn’t become God’s children in a physical way—from a human impulse or from a husband’s desire to have a child. They were born from God.

The Word became human and lived among us. We saw his glory. It was the glory that the Father shares with his only Son, a glory full of kindness and truth.

(John declared the truth about him when he said loudly, “This is the person about whom I said, ‘The one who comes after me was before me because he existed before I did.’”)

Each of us has received one gift after another because of all that the Word is.

Laws were given through Moses, but kindness and truth came into existence through Yeshua Christ.

No one has ever seen God. God’s only Son, the one who is closest to the Father’s heart, has made him known.

This was John’s answer when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

John didn’t refuse to answer. He told them clearly, “I’m not the Messiah.”

They asked him, “Well, are you Elijah?” John answered, “No, I’m not.” Then they asked, “Are you the prophet?” John replied, “No.”

So they asked him, “Who are you? Tell us so that we can take an answer back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

John said, “I’m a voice crying out in the desert, ‘Make the way for the Lord straight,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

Some of those who had been sent were Pharisees.

They asked John, “Why do you baptize if you’re not the Messiah or Elijah or the prophet?”

John answered them, “I baptize with water. Someone you don’t know is standing among you.

He’s the one who comes after me. I am not worthy to untie his sandal strap.”

This happened in Bethany on the east side of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing.

John saw Yeshua coming toward him the next day and said, “Look! This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

He is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘A man who comes after me was before me because he existed before I did.’

I didn’t know who he was. However, I came to baptize with water to show him to the people of Israel.”

John said, “I saw the Spirit come down as a dove from heaven and stay on him.

I didn’t know who he was. But God, who sent me to baptize with water, had told me, ‘When you see the Spirit come down and stay on someone, you’ll know that person is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

I have seen this and have declared that this is the Son of God.”

The next day John was standing with two of his disciples.

John saw Yeshua walk by. John said, “Look! This is the Lamb of God.”

When the two disciples heard John say this, they followed Yeshua.

Yeshua turned around and saw them following him. He asked them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which means “teacher”), “where are you staying?”

Yeshua told them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went to see where he was staying and spent the rest of that day with him. It was about ten o’clock in the morning.

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two disciples who heard John and followed Yeshua.

Andrew at once found his brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ”).

Andrew brought Simon to Yeshua. Yeshua looked at Simon and said, “You are Simon, son of John. Your name will be Cephas” (which means “Peter”).

The next day Yeshua wanted to go to Galilee. He found Philip and told him, “Follow me!”

(Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter.)

Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the man whom Moses wrote about in his teachings and whom the prophets wrote about. He is Yeshua, son of Joseph, from the city of Nazareth.”

Nathanael said to Philip, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Philip told him, “Come and see!”

Yeshua saw Nathanael coming toward him and remarked, “Here is a true Israelite who is sincere.”

Nathanael asked Yeshua, “How do you know anything about me?” Yeshua answered him, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

Nathanael said to Yeshua, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the king of Israel!”

Yeshua replied, “You believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”

Yeshua said to Nathanael, “I can guarantee this truth: You will see the sky open and God’s angels going up and coming down to the Son of Man.”

because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

he admitted and did not deny it, but admitted, “I am not the Messiah.”

So they asked him, “What are you then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”

So they said to him, “Who are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you have to say for yourself?”

and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”

The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.

Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?”

He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.

Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

The next day he decided to go to Galilee, and he found Philip. And Jesus said to him, “Follow me.”

He *said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

He *found first his own brother Simon and *said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which translated means Christ).

He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you shall be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

The next day He purposed to go into Galilee, and He *found Philip. And Jesus *said to him, “Follow Me.”

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.

Philip *found Nathanael and *said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

Nathanael said to him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip *said to him, “Come and see.”

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and *said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!”

Nathanael *said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
