(of whom the world was not worthy). They wandered in deserts and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
(of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts and mountains and caves, and the holes of the earth.
(people of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts and mountains and [living in] caves and holes in the ground.
[Men] of whom the world was not worthy—roaming over the desolate places and the mountains, and [living] in caves and caverns and holes of the earth.
(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
The world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and on mountains, hiding in caves and holes in the ground.
The world didn’t deserve them. They wandered around in deserts, mountains, caves, and holes in the ground.
wandering about in deserts and mountains, living in caves and holes in the ground! The world was not worthy of them!
The world did not deserve these good people, who had to wander in deserts and on mountains and had to live in caves and holes in the ground.
(of whom the world was not worthy,) wandering in deserts and mountains, and [in] dens and caverns of the earth.
of whom the world was not worthy— wandering in desolate-places and mountains and caves and openings of the earth.
Of whom the world was not worthy; wandering in deserts, in mountains, and in dens, and in caves of the earth.
The world was not good enough for these great people. They had to wander in deserts and mountains, living in caves and holes in the ground.
These people who trusted God were too good for this world. Some of them had to travel about in the wilderness and on the hills. Some had to live in holes in the rocks and in the ground.
The world was not worthy of them as they wandered in deserts and mountains and caves and holes in the ground.
of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
The world was not ·good enough for [worthy of] them! They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves and holes in the earth.
Whom the world was not worthy of: they wandered in wildernesses and mountains, and dens, and caves of the earth.
The world didn’t deserve these good people. Some wandered around in deserts and mountains and lived in caves and holes in the ground.
The world was not good enough for them! They wandered like refugees in the deserts and hills, living in caves and holes in the ground.
The world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and on mountains, hiding in caves and holes in the ground.
The world was not good enough for them! They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves and holes in the earth.
The world wasn’t worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and from caves to holes in the ground.
And what other examples shall I give? There is simply not time to continue by telling the stories of Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jeptha; of David, Samuel and the prophets. Through their faith these men conquered kingdoms, ruled in justice and proved the truth of God’s promises. They shut the mouths of lions, they quenched the furious blaze of fire, they escaped from death itself. From being weaklings they became strong men and mighty warriors; they routed whole armies of foreigners. Some returned to their womenfolk from certain death, while others were tortured and refused to be ransomed, because they wanted to deserve a more honourable resurrection in the world to come. Others were exposed to the test of public mockery and flogging, and to the torture of being left bound in prison. They were killed by stoning, by being sawn in two; they were tempted by specious promises of release and then were killed with the sword. Many became refugees with nothing but sheepskins or goatskins to cover them. They lost everything and yet were spurned and ill-treated by a world that was too evil to see their worth. They lived as vagrants in the desert, on the mountains, or in caves or holes in the ground.
(of whom the world was not worthy); they wandered in deserts and in mountains and in dens and caves of the earth.
(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
(of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
(of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in desolate places and mountains and caves and holes in the ground.
of whom the world was not worthy, wandering about on deserts and mountains and in caves and in holes in the ground.
Some died by stoning and some by being sawed in two; others were promised freedom if they would renounce their faith, then were killed with the sword. Some went about in skins of sheep and goats, wandering over deserts and mountains, hiding in dens and caves. They were hungry and sick and ill-treated—too good for this world.
I could go on and on, but I’ve run out of time. There are so many more—Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, the prophets. . . . Through acts of faith, they toppled kingdoms, made justice work, took the promises for themselves. They were protected from lions, fires, and sword thrusts, turned disadvantage to advantage, won battles, routed alien armies. Women received their loved ones back from the dead. There were those who, under torture, refused to give in and go free, preferring something better: resurrection. Others braved abuse and whips, and, yes, chains and dungeons. We have stories of those who were stoned, sawed in two, murdered in cold blood; stories of vagrants wandering the earth in animal skins, homeless, friendless, powerless—the world didn’t deserve them!—making their way as best they could on the cruel edges of the world.
The world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth.
(of whom the world was not worthy). They wandered aimlessly in deserts and on mountains, · living in caves and · crevices in the ground,
