But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, but he of the freewoman was by promise.

But the child of the slave woman was born according to the flesh and had an ordinary birth, while the son of the free woman was born in fulfillment of the promise.

The son of the slave woman was born in the usual way. But the son of the free woman was born because of God's promise.

Abraham’s son from the slave woman was born in the normal human way. But the son from the free woman was born because of the promise God made to Abraham.
Hagar was a slave. Her son was born as a result of what Abraham himself decided. But Abraham's wife, Sarah, gave birth to the other son. That son was born as a result of what God had promised to Abraham.
However, the son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, but the son by the free woman was born through a promise.
But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise.

Abraham’s son from the slave woman was born ·in the normal human way [or through human effort/plan; L according to the flesh; C Ishmael; Gen. 16]. But the son from the free woman was born ·because of the promise God made to Abraham [L through the promise; C Isaac; Gen. 17; 21].
But he which was of the servant, was born after the flesh: and he which was of the free woman, was born by promise.
Now, the son of the slave woman was conceived in a natural way, but the son of the free woman was conceived through a promise ⌞made to Abraham⌟.

But the one by the slave was born according to the impulse of the flesh, while the one by the free woman was born as the result of a promise.
Abraham’s son from the slave woman was born in the normal human way. But the son from the free woman was born because of the promise God made to Abraham.
Now the slave woman’s son was conceived through human means, while the free woman’s son was conceived through divine promise.
It is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave and the other by the free woman. The child of the slave was born in the ordinary course of nature, but the child of the free woman was born in accordance with God’s promise. This can be regarded as an allegory. Here are the two agreements represented by the two women: the one from Mount Sinai bearing children into slavery, typified by Hagar (Mount Sinai being in Arabia, the land of the descendants of Ishmael, Hagar’s son), and corresponding to present-day Jerusalem—for the Jews are still, spiritually speaking, “slaves”. But the free woman typifies the heavenly Jerusalem, which is the mother of us all, and is spiritually “free”. It is written: ‘Rejoice, O barren, you who do not bear! Break forth and shout, you who do not travail! For the desolate has many more children than she who has a husband.’

But the one by the female slave was born according to human descent, and the one by the free woman through the promise,
There was nothing unusual about the birth of the slave-wife’s baby. But the baby of the freeborn wife was born only after God had especially promised he would come.
Tell me now, you who have become so enamored with the law: Have you paid close attention to that law? Abraham, remember, had two sons: one by the slave woman and one by the free woman. The son of the slave woman was born by human plotting; the son of the free woman was born by God’s promise. This illustrates the very thing we are dealing with now. The two births represent two ways of being in relationship with God. One is from Mount Sinai in Arabia. It corresponds with what is now going on in Jerusalem—a slave life, producing slaves as offspring. This is the way of Hagar. In contrast to that, there is an invisible Jerusalem, a free Jerusalem, and she is our mother—this is the way of Sarah. Remember what Isaiah wrote: Rejoice, barren woman who bears no children, shout and cry out, woman who has no birth pangs, Because the children of the barren woman now surpass the children of the chosen woman. Isn’t it clear, friends, that you, like Isaac, are children of promise? In the days of Hagar and Sarah, the child who came from faithless plotting (Ishmael) harassed the child who came—empowered by the Spirit—from the faithful promise (Isaac). Isn’t it clear that the harassment you are now experiencing from the Jerusalem heretics follows that old pattern? There is a Scripture that tells us what to do: “Expel the slave mother with her son, for the slave son will not inherit with the free son.” Isn’t that conclusive? We are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.

Now, the son of the slave woman was conceived in a natural way, but the son of the free woman was conceived through a promise made to Abraham.
The son of the slave woman was born naturally, the son of the freeborn through a promise.
But the son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise.
But the son by the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise.
The son by the slave woman was born through the flesh. The son by the free woman was born through a promise.

The son born from the woman servant who was owned by someone was like any other birth. The son born from the free woman was different. That son had been promised by God.
The son of the slave wife was born in a human attempt to bring about the fulfillment of God’s promise. But the son of the freeborn wife was born as God’s own fulfillment of his promise.
Yea, and the son of the bondwoman was born after the flesh, but the son of the free woman was born by promise,

But the one of the slave woman has been born according to the basar, and the one of the free woman has been born through the havtachah (promise).
But he who was by the servant was born after the flesh. And he who was by the free woman was born by promise.
But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, the son of the free woman through promise.
But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, the son of the free woman through promise.
But one—the son by the slave woman—was born naturally; while the other—the son by the free woman—was through the promise.
The slave woman’s son was born through only natural means, but the free woman’s son was born through a promise from God.
However, the son by the servant was born according to the flesh, but the son by the free woman was born through promise.
The child of the slave woman was born as any child is born. But the child of the free woman was born because God promised he would be born.
