being defamed, we entreat. We are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day.
ASV
being defamed, we entreat: we are made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things, even until now.

DARBY
insulted, we entreat: we are become as [the] offscouring of the world, [the] refuse of all, until now.

While being reviled, we bless; while being persecuted, we endure; while being slandered, we conciliate. We were-made like the sweepings of the world, the scum of all things, up to now.
DRA

ERV
When people say bad things about us, we try to say something that will help them. But people still treat us like the world’s garbage—everyone’s trash.
EASY
When people say bad things against us, we answer with kind words. We have become like dirty things that people throw away. That is still true, even today.
EHV
When slandered, we speak kind words. We have been treated like the world’s garbage, like everyone’s trash, right up to the present time.
ESV

ISV
When slandered, we answer with kind words. Even now we have become the filth of the world, the scum of the universe.
PHILLIPS
I sometimes think that God means us, the messengers, to appear last in the procession of mankind, like the men who are to die in the arena. For indeed we are made a public spectacle before the angels of Heaven and the eyes of men. We are looked upon as fools, for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in the Christian faith. We are considered weak, but you have become strong: you have found honour, we little but contempt. Up to this very hour we are hungry and thirsty, ill-clad, knocked about and practically homeless. We still have to work for our living by manual labour. Men curse us, but we return a blessing: they make our lives miserable but we take it patiently. They ruin our reputations but we go on trying to win them for God. We are the world’s rubbish, the scum of the earth, yes, up to this very day.
JUB

LEB
when we are slandered, we encourage. We have become like the refuse of the world, the offscouring of all things, until now.
TLB
We have replied quietly when evil things have been said about us. Yet right up to the present moment we are like dirt underfoot, like garbage.
MSG
It seems to me that God has put us who bear his Message on stage in a theater in which no one wants to buy a ticket. We’re something everyone stands around and stares at, like an accident in the street. We’re the Messiah’s misfits. You might be sure of yourselves, but we live in the midst of frailties and uncertainties. You might be well-thought-of by others, but we’re mostly kicked around. Much of the time we don’t have enough to eat, we wear patched and threadbare clothes, we get doors slammed in our faces, and we pick up odd jobs anywhere we can to eke out a living. When they call us names, we say, “God bless you.” When they spread rumors about us, we put in a good word for them. We’re treated like garbage, the leftovers that nobody wants. And it’s not getting any better.
MEV
Being slandered, we encourage. We are made as the filth of the world, and are the refuse of all things to this day.

NTFE
When we are slandered, we speak gently in return. To this day we have become like the rubbish of the world, fit only to be scraped off the plate and thrown away with everything else.
OJB
Being defamed by loshon hora, we conciliate. We have become what the earth wants swept out the door, something considered trash the Olam Hazeh wants removed. [YIRMEYAH 20:18; EKHAH 3:45]
RGT
We are slandered, and we pray. We are made as the filth of the world, the scum of all things, unto this time.
RSV

WYC
we be blasphemed, and we beseech; as cleansings of this world we be made the out-casting [we be made the parings, or out-castings,] of all things till yet.
YLT
being spoken evil of, we entreat; as filth of the world we did become -- of all things an offscouring -- till now.
