Psalm 42

Book 2 (Psalms 42-72)

Psalm 42[a]

For the music director, a well-written song[b] by the Korahites.

42 As a deer[c] longs[d] for streams of water,
so I long[e] for you, O God!
I thirst[f] for God,
for the living God.
I say,[g] “When will I be able to go and appear in God’s presence?”[h]
I cannot eat; I weep day and night.[i]
All day long they say to me,[j] “Where is your God?”
I will remember and weep.[k]
For I was once walking along with the great throng to the temple of God,
shouting and giving thanks along with the crowd as we celebrated the holy festival.[l]
Why are you depressed,[m] O my soul?[n]
Why are you upset?[o]
Wait[p] for God!
For I will again give thanks
to my God for his saving intervention.[q]
I am depressed,[r]
so I will pray to you while in the region of the upper Jordan,[s]
from Hermon,[t] from Mount Mizar.[u]
One deep stream calls out to another[v] at the sound of your waterfalls;[w]
all your billows and waves overwhelm me.[x]
By day the Lord decrees his loyal love,[y]
and by night he gives me a song,[z]
a prayer[aa] to the God of my life.
I will pray[ab] to God, my high ridge:[ac]
“Why do you ignore[ad] me?
Why must I walk around mourning[ae]
because my enemies oppress me?”
10 My enemies’ taunts cut me to the bone,[af]
as they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”[ag]
11 Why are you depressed,[ah] O my soul?[ai]
Why are you upset?[aj]
Wait for God!
For I will again give thanks
to my God for his saving intervention.[ak]

Psalm 43

Psalm 43[a]

43 Vindicate me, O God!
Fight for me[b] against an ungodly nation.
Deliver me[c] from deceitful and evil men.[d]
For you are the God who shelters me.[e]
Why do you reject me?[f]
Why must I walk around[g] mourning[h]
because my enemies oppress me?
Reveal[i] your light[j] and your faithfulness.
They will lead me;[k]
they will escort[l] me back to your holy hill,[m]
and to the place where you live.[n]
Then I will go[o] to the altar of God,
to the God who gives me ecstatic joy,[p]
so that I may express my thanks to you,[q] O God, my God, with a harp.
Why are you depressed,[r] O my soul?[s]
Why are you upset?[t]
Wait for God!
For I will again give thanks
to my God for his saving intervention.[u]

Job 6:14-30

Disappointing Friends

14 “To the one in despair, kindness[a] should come from his friend[b]
even if[c] he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
15 My brothers[d] have been as treacherous[e] as a seasonal stream,[f]
and as the riverbeds of the intermittent streams[g]
that flow away.[h]
16 They[i] are dark[j] because of ice;
snow is piled up[k] over them.[l]
17 When they are scorched,[m] they dry up,
when it is hot, they vanish[n] from their place.
18 Caravans[o] turn aside from their routes;
they go[p] into the wasteland[q] and perish.[r]
19 The caravans of Tema[s] looked intently[t] for these streams;[u]
the traveling merchants[v] of Sheba hoped for them.
20 They were distressed,[w]
because each one had been[x] so confident;
they arrived there,[y] but were disappointed.
21 For now[z] you have become like these streams that are no help;[aa]
you see a terror,[ab] and are afraid.

Friends’ Fears

22 “Have I[ac] ever said,[ad] ‘Give me something,
and from your fortune[ae] make gifts[af] in my favor’?
23 Or, ‘Deliver me[ag] from the enemy’s power,[ah]
and from the hand of tyrants[ai] ransom[aj] me’?

No Sin Discovered

24 “Teach[ak] me and I, for my part,[al] will be silent;
explain to me[am] how I have been mistaken.[an]
25 How painful are[ao] honest words!
But[ap] what does your reproof[aq] prove?[ar]
26 Do you intend to criticize mere words,
and treat[as] the words of a despairing man as wind?
27 Yes, you would gamble[at] for the fatherless,
and auction off[au] your friend.

Other Explanation

28 “Now then, be good enough to look[av] at me;[aw]
and I will not[ax] lie to your face!
29 Relent,[ay] let there be no falsehood;[az]
reconsider,[ba] for my righteousness is intact![bb]
30 Is there any falsehood[bc] on my lips?
Can my mouth[bd] not discern evil things?[be]

Galatians 3:15-22

Inheritance Comes from Promises and not Law

15 Brothers and sisters,[a] I offer an example from everyday life:[b] When a covenant[c] has been ratified,[d] even though it is only a human contract, no one can set it aside or add anything to it. 16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his descendant.[e] Scripture[f] does not say, “and to the descendants,”[g] referring to many, but “and to your descendant,”[h] referring to one, who is Christ. 17 What I am saying is this: The law that came 430 years later does not cancel a covenant previously ratified by God,[i] so as to invalidate the promise. 18 For if the inheritance is based on the law, it is no longer based on the promise, but God graciously gave[j] it to Abraham through the promise.

19 Why then was the law given?[k] It was added[l] because of transgressions,[m] until the arrival of the descendant[n] to whom the promise had been made. It was administered[o] through angels by an intermediary.[p] 20 Now an intermediary is not for one party alone, but God is one.[q] 21 Is the law therefore opposed to the promises of God?[r] Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that was able to give life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law.[s] 22 But the scripture imprisoned[t] everything under sin so that the promise could be given—because of the faithfulness[u] of Jesus Christ—to those who believe.
