Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 124[a]
A song of ascents;[b] by David.
124 “If the Lord had not been on our side”—
let Israel say this.—
2 if the Lord had not been on our side,
when men attacked us,[c]
3 they would have swallowed us alive,
when their anger raged against us.
4 The water would have overpowered us;
the current[d] would have overwhelmed[e] us.[f]
5 The raging water
would have overwhelmed us.[g]
6 The Lord deserves praise,[h]
for[i] he did not hand us over as prey to their teeth.
7 We escaped with our lives,[j] like a bird from a hunter’s snare.
The snare broke, and we escaped.
8 Our deliverer is the Lord,[k]
the Creator[l] of heaven and earth.
4 “To you, O people,[a] I call out,
and my voice calls[b] to all mankind.[c]
5 You who are naive, discern[d] wisdom!
And you fools, understand discernment![e]
6 Listen, for I will speak excellent things,[f]
and my lips will utter[g] what is right.
7 For my mouth[h] speaks truth,[i]
and my lips[j] hate wickedness.[k]
8 All the words of my mouth are righteous;[l]
there is nothing in them twisted[m] or crooked.
9 All of them are clear[n] to the discerning
and upright to those who find knowledge.
10 Receive my instruction[o] rather than[p] silver,
and knowledge rather than choice gold.
11 For wisdom is better than rubies,
and desirable things cannot be compared[q] to her.
12 “I, wisdom, have dwelt[r] with prudence,[s]
and I find[t] knowledge and discretion.
13 The fear of the Lord is to hate[u] evil;
I hate arrogant pride[v] and the evil way
and perverse utterances.[w]
14 Counsel and sound wisdom belong to me;[x]
I possess understanding and might.
15 By me kings reign,
and by me[y] potentates[z] decree[aa] righteousness;
16 by me princes rule,
as well as nobles and[ab] all righteous judges.[ac]
17 I will love[ad] those who love me,
and those who seek me diligently will find me.
18 Riches and honor are with me,
long-lasting wealth and righteousness.
19 My fruit is better than the purest gold,[ae]
and my harvest[af] is better than choice silver.
20 I walk in the path of righteousness,
in the pathway of justice,
21 that I may cause[ag] those who love me to inherit wealth,
and that I may fill[ah] their treasuries.[ai]
Live Wisely
15 Therefore consider carefully how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 taking advantage of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 For this reason do not be foolish, but be wise[a] by understanding[b] what the Lord’s will is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, which[c] is debauchery,[d] but be filled by the Spirit,[e] 19 speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music[f] in[g] your hearts to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for all things[h] in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
