Version
Exodus 1:8-2:10

Then a new king,[a] who did not know about[b] Joseph, came to power[c] over Egypt. He said[d] to his people, “Look at[e] the Israelite people, more numerous and stronger than we are! 10 Come, let’s deal wisely[f] with them. Otherwise[g] they will continue to multiply,[h] and if[i] a war breaks out, they will ally themselves with[j] our enemies and fight against us and leave[k] the country.”

11 So they put foremen[l] over the Israelites[m] to oppress[n] them with hard labor. As a result[o] they built Pithom and Rameses[p] as store cities for Pharaoh. 12 But the more the Egyptians[q] oppressed them, the more they multiplied and spread.[r] As a result the Egyptians loathed[s] the Israelites, 13 and they[t] made the Israelites serve rigorously.[u] 14 They made their lives bitter[v] by[w] hard service with mortar and bricks and by all kinds of service[x] in the fields. Every kind of service the Israelites were required to give was rigorous.[y]

15 The king of Egypt said[z] to the Hebrew midwives,[aa] one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah,[ab] 16 [ac] “When you assist[ad] the Hebrew women in childbirth, observe at the delivery:[ae] If it is a son, kill him,[af] but if it is a daughter, she may live.”[ag] 17 But[ah] the midwives feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them; they let the boys live.[ai]

18 Then the king of Egypt summoned[aj] the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this and let the boys live?”[ak] 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew[al] women are not like the Egyptian women—for the Hebrew women[am] are vigorous; they give birth before the midwife gets to them!”[an] 20 So God treated the midwives well,[ao] and the people multiplied and became very strong. 21 And because the midwives feared God, he made[ap] households[aq] for them.

22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “All sons[ar] that are born you must throw[as] into the river, but all daughters you may let live.”[at]

The Birth of the Deliverer

[au] A man from the household[av] of Levi married[aw] a woman who was a descendant of Levi.[ax] The woman became pregnant[ay] and gave birth to a son. When[az] she saw that[ba] he was a healthy[bb] child, she hid him for three months. But when she was no longer able to hide him, she took a papyrus basket[bc] for him and sealed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and set it among the reeds along the edge of the Nile.[bd] His sister stationed herself[be] at a distance to find out[bf] what would[bg] happen to him.

Then the daughter of Pharaoh[bh] came down to wash herself[bi] by the Nile, while her attendants were walking alongside the river,[bj] and she saw the basket among the reeds. She sent one of her attendants,[bk] took it,[bl] opened it,[bm] and saw the child[bn]—a boy,[bo] crying![bp]—and she felt compassion[bq] for him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”

Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get[br] a nursing woman[bs] for you from the Hebrews, so that she may nurse[bt] the child for you?” Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Yes, do so.”[bu] So the young girl[bv] went and got[bw] the child’s mother.[bx] Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child[by] and nurse him for me, and I will pay your[bz] wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him.

10 When the child grew older[ca] she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son.[cb] She named him Moses, saying, “Because I drew him from the water.”[cc]

Psalm 124

Psalm 124[a]

A song of ascents;[b] by David.

124 “If the Lord had not been on our side”—
let Israel say this.—
if the Lord had not been on our side,
when men attacked us,[c]
they would have swallowed us alive,
when their anger raged against us.
The water would have overpowered us;
the current[d] would have overwhelmed[e] us.[f]
The raging water
would have overwhelmed us.[g]
The Lord deserves praise,[h]
for[i] he did not hand us over as prey to their teeth.
We escaped with our lives,[j] like a bird from a hunter’s snare.
The snare broke, and we escaped.
Our deliverer is the Lord,[k]
the Creator[l] of heaven and earth.

Romans 12:1-8

Consecration of the Believer’s Life

12 Therefore I exhort you, brothers and sisters,[a] by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a sacrifice—alive, holy, and pleasing to God[b]—which is your reasonable service. Do not be conformed[c] to this present world,[d] but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve[e] what is the will of God—what is good and well-pleasing and perfect.

Conduct in Humility

For by the grace given to me I say to every one of you not to think more highly of yourself than you ought to think, but to think with sober discernment, as God has distributed to each of you[f] a measure of faith.[g] For just as in one body we have many members, and not all the members serve the same function, so we who are many are one body in Christ, and individually we are members who belong to one another. And we have different gifts[h] according to the grace given to us. If the gift is prophecy, that individual must use it in proportion to his faith.[i] If it is service, he must serve; if it is teaching, he must teach; if it is exhortation, he must exhort; if it is contributing, he must do so with sincerity; if it is leadership, he must do so with diligence; if it is showing mercy, he must do so with cheerfulness.

Matthew 16:13-20

Peter’s Confession

13 When[a] Jesus came to the area of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,[b] “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 They answered, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah,[c] and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered,[d] “You are the Christ,[e] the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him,[f] “You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood[g] did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven! 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades[h] will not overpower it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven, and whatever you release on earth will have been released in heaven.” 20 Then he instructed his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.[i]
