Psalm 8

Psalm 8[a]

For the music director, according to the gittith style;[b] a psalm of David.

O Lord, our Lord,[c]
how magnificent[d] is your reputation[e] throughout the earth!
You reveal your majesty in the heavens above.[f]
From the mouths of children and nursing babies
you have ordained praise on account of your adversaries,[g]
so that you might put an end to the vindictive enemy.[h]
When I look up at the heavens, which your fingers made,
and see the moon and the stars, which you set in place,[i]
Of what importance is the human race,[j] that you should notice[k] them?
Of what importance is mankind,[l] that you should pay attention to them?[m]
You made them[n] a little less than[o] the heavenly beings.[p]
You crowned mankind[q] with honor and majesty.[r]
you appoint them to rule over your creation;[s]
you have placed[t] everything under their authority,[u]
including all the sheep and cattle,
as well as the wild animals,[v]
the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea,
and everything that moves through the currents[w] of the seas.
O Lord, our Lord,[x]
how magnificent[y] is your reputation[z] throughout the earth![aa]

Exodus 2:15-22

15 When Pharaoh heard[a] about this event,[b] he sought to kill Moses. So Moses fled[c] from Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian,[d] and he settled[e] by a certain well.[f]

16 Now a priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and began to draw[g] water[h] and fill[i] the troughs in order to water their father’s flock. 17 When some[j] shepherds came and drove them away,[k] Moses came up and defended them[l] and then watered their flock. 18 So when they came home[m] to their father Reuel,[n] he asked, “Why have you come home so early[o] today?” 19 They said, “An Egyptian man rescued us[p] from the shepherds,[q] and he actually[r] drew water for us and watered the flock!” 20 He said[s] to his daughters, “So where is he?[t] Why in the world[u] did you leave the man? Call him, so that he may eat[v] a meal[w] with us.”

21 Moses agreed[x] to stay with the man, and he gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage.[y] 22 When she bore[z] a son, Moses[aa] named him Gershom, for he said, “I have become a resident foreigner in a foreign land.”[ab]

Matthew 26:6-13

Jesus’ Anointing

Now while Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper,[a] a woman came to him with an alabaster jar[b] of expensive perfumed oil,[c] and she poured it on his head as he was at the table.[d] When[e] the disciples saw this, they became indignant and said, “Why this waste? It[f] could have been sold at a high price and the money[g] given to the poor!” 10 When[h] Jesus learned of this, he said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She[i] has done a good service for me. 11 For you will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me![j] 12 When[k] she poured this oil on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. 13 I tell you the truth,[l] wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”
