Genesis 13-15

Abram and Lot Separate

13 So Abram went up from Egypt to (A)the [a]Negev, he and his wife and all that belonged to him, and Lot with him.

Now Abram was (B)very rich in livestock, in silver and in gold. And he went [b]on his journeys from the [c]Negev as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, (C)between Bethel and Ai, to the place of the (D)altar which he had made there formerly; and there Abram called upon the name of Yahweh.

Now (E)Lot, who was going with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. And (F)the land could not [d]sustain them [e]while living together, (G)for their possessions were so abundant that they were not able to live together. (H)And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. Now (I)the Canaanite and the Perizzite were living then in the land.

(J)So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, nor between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brothers. Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me; if to the left, then I will go to the right; or if to the right, then I will go to the left.” 10 Then Lot lifted up his eyes and saw all the [f](K)valley of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere—this was before Yahweh (L)destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—like (M)the garden of Yahweh, (N)like the land of Egypt as you go to (O)Zoar. 11 So Lot chose for himself all the [g]valley of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. Thus they separated from each other. 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived in (P)the cities of the [h]valley and moved his tents as far as Sodom. 13 Now (Q)the men of Sodom were evil and (R)sinners, exceedingly so, against Yahweh.

14 And Yahweh said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “(S)Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, (T)northward and southward and eastward and westward; 15 (U)for all the land which you see, (V)I will give it to you and to your seed forever. 16 And I will make your seed (W)as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, then your seed can also be numbered. 17 Arise, (X)walk about the land through its length and breadth; for (Y)I will give it to you.” 18 Then Abram moved his tent and came and lived by the [i](Z)oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and there he built (AA)an altar to Yahweh.

Kings of the Valley Take Lot

14 And it happened in the days of Amraphel king of (AB)Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of (AC)Elam, and Tidal king of [j]Goiim, that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of (AD)Admah, and Shemeber king of (AE)Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, (AF)Zoar). All these [k]came as allies to (AG)the valley of Siddim (that is, (AH)the Salt Sea). Now for twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, but the thirteenth year they rebelled. So in the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him, came and struck the (AI)Rephaim in (AJ)Ashteroth-karnaim and the Zuzim in Ham and the Emim in [l](AK)Shaveh-kiriathaim, and the (AL)Horites in their Mount Seir, as far as (AM)El-paran, which is by the wilderness. Then they turned back and came to En-mishpat (that is, (AN)Kadesh). And they struck all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, who were living in (AO)Hazazon-tamar. And the king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah and the king of Admah and the king of Zeboiim and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) came out; and they arranged themselves for battle against them in (AP)the valley of Siddim, against Chedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of [m]Goiim and Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar, four kings against five— 10 now the valley of Siddim was full of tar pits—and (AQ)the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell [n]into them; but those who remained behind fled to the (AR)hill country. 11 Then they took all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food supply and departed. 12 They also took Lot, (AS)Abram’s nephew, and his possessions and departed; (AT)now he was living in Sodom.

13 Then [o]a fugitive came and told Abram the (AU)Hebrew. Now he was dwelling by the [p](AV)oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner, and these were [q](AW)in a covenant with Abram. 14 So Abram heard that (AX)his [r]relative had been taken captive, and he [s]led out his trained men, (AY)born in his house, 318 in number, and went in pursuit as far as (AZ)Dan. 15 (BA)And he divided [t]his men against them by night, he and his servants, and struck them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is [u]north of (BB)Damascus. 16 And he (BC)brought back all the possessions, and he also brought back (BD)his [v]relative Lot with his possessions and also the women and the people.

Melchizedek Blesses Abram

17 Then after he came back from striking down Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, (BE)the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the valley of Shaveh (that is, (BF)the King’s Valley). 18 And (BG)Melchizedek king of Salem brought out (BH)bread and wine; now he was a (BI)priest of [w]God Most High. 19 Then he blessed him and said,

“Blessed be Abram of [x]God Most High,
[y](BJ)Possessor of heaven and earth;
20 And blessed be [z]God Most High,
Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”

(BK)Then he gave him a tenth of all. 21 And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give the [aa]people to me, but take the possessions for yourself.” 22 Then Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have [ab]raised my hand to Yahweh [ac](BL)God Most High, [ad](BM)possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that (BN)I will not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, so that you would not say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ 24 [ae]I will take nothing except what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me, (BO)Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their share.”

Yahweh Cuts a Covenant with Abram

15 After these things (BP)the word of Yahweh came to Abram in a vision, saying,

(BQ)Do not fear, Abram,
I am (BR)a shield to you;
[af]Your (BS)reward shall be very great.”

And Abram said, “O Lord Yahweh, what will You give me, as I go on being childless, and the [ag]heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “[ah]Since You have given no seed to me, behold, [ai]one (BT)born in my house is my heir.” Then behold, the word of Yahweh came to him, saying, “This one will not be your heir; (BU)but one who will come forth from your own [aj]body, he shall be your heir.” And He brought him outside and said, “Now look toward the heavens, and (BV)number the stars, if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, “(BW)So shall your seed be.” (BX)Then he believed in Yahweh; and He counted it to him as righteousness. And He said to him, “I am Yahweh who brought you out of (BY)Ur of the Chaldeans, to (BZ)give you this land to [ak]possess it.” And he said, “O Lord Yahweh, (CA)how may I know that I will [al]possess it?” So He said to him, “[am]Bring Me a three year old heifer, and a three year old female goat, and a three year old ram, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” 10 Then he [an]brought all these to Him and (CB)split them into parts [ao]down the middle and laid each part opposite the other; but he (CC)did not split apart the birds. 11 Then the birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.

12 Now it happened that when the sun was going down, (CD)a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, [ap]terror and great darkness fell upon him. 13 Then God said to Abram, “Know for certain that (CE)your seed will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs, [aq]and (CF)they will be enslaved and mistreated (CG)four hundred years. 14 But I will also judge the nation to whom they are enslaved, and afterward they will come out (CH)with [ar]many possessions. 15 As for you, (CI)you shall go to your fathers in peace; you will be buried at a good old age. 16 Then in (CJ)the fourth generation they will return here, for (CK)the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.”

17 Now it happened that the sun had set, and it was very dark, and behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a flaming torch which (CL)passed between these pieces. 18 On that day Yahweh cut a covenant with Abram, saying,

(CM)To your seed I have given this land,
From (CN)the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates:

19 (CO)the Kenite and the Kenizzite and the Kadmonite 20 and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Rephaim 21 and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Girgashite and the Jebusite.”

Matthew 5:1-26

The Sermon on the Mount; The Beatitudes

(A)Now when Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on (B)the [a]mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. (C)And He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,

[b](D)Blessed are the [c]poor in spirit, for (E)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are (F)those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are (G)the [d]lowly, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are (H)those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are (I)the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
Blessed are (J)the pure in heart, for (K)they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for (L)they shall be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who have been (M)persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for (N)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people (O)insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for (P)in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Salt and Light

13 “You are the salt of the earth; but (Q)if the salt has become tasteless, how will it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out to be trampled under foot by men.

14 “You are (R)the light of the world. A city set on a [e]hill cannot be hidden; 15 (S)nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a [f]basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may (T)see your good works, and (U)glorify your Father who is in heaven.

17 “Do not think that I came to abolish the (V)Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, (W)until heaven and earth pass away, not [g]the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches [h]others to do the same, shall be called least (X)in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20 “For I say to you that unless your (Y)righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Personal Relationships

21 (Z)You have heard that [i]the ancients were told, ‘(AA)You shall not murder’ and ‘Whoever murders shall be guilty before (AB)the court.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before (AC)the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘[j]Raca,’ shall be guilty before the [k](AD)Sanhedrin; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the [l](AE)fiery hell. 23 Therefore if you are (AF)presenting your [m]offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your [n]offering there before the altar and go; first be (AG)reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your [o]offering. 25 (AH)Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I say to you, (AI)you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last [p]quadrans.
