³⁸ But He, being ^(A)compassionate, ^(B)atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them;
And He abounded in ^(C)turning back His anger
And did not arouse all His wrath.
³⁹ Thus ^(D)He remembered that they were but ^(E)flesh,
A ^[a](F)wind that goes and does not return.

⁴⁰ How often they ^(G)rebelled against Him in the wilderness
And ^(H)grieved Him in the ^(I)wasteland!
⁴¹ Again and again they ^[b](J)tested God,
And pained the ^(K)Holy One of Israel.
⁴² They ^(L)did not remember ^(M)His ^[c]power,
The day when He ^(N)redeemed them from the adversary,
⁴³ When He performed His ^(O)signs in Egypt
And His ^(P)miracles in the field of Zoan,
⁴⁴ And ^(Q)turned their rivers to blood,
And their streams, they could not drink.
⁴⁵ He sent among them swarms of ^(R)flies which devoured them,
And ^(S)frogs which destroyed them.
⁴⁶ He gave also their crops to the ^(T)grasshopper
And the fruit of their labor to the ^(U)locust.
⁴⁷ He killed their vines with ^(V)hailstones
And their sycamore trees with frost.
⁴⁸ He gave over their ^(W)cattle also to the hailstones
And their herds to bolts of lightning.
⁴⁹ He ^(X)sent upon them His burning anger,
Fury and indignation and ^[d]distress,
^[e]A band of destroying angels.
⁵⁰ He leveled a path for His anger;
He did not hold back their soul from death,
But ^(Y)gave over their life to the plague,
⁵¹ So He ^(Z)struck all the firstborn in Egypt,
The ^(AA)first of their vigor in the tents of ^(AB)Ham.
⁵² But He ^(AC)led forth His own people like sheep
And guided them in the wilderness ^(AD)like a flock;
⁵³ He led them ^(AE)safely, so that they did not fear;
But ^(AF)the sea covered their enemies.

⁵⁴ So ^(AG)He brought them to His holy ^[f]land,
To this ^[g](AH)hill country ^(AI)which His right hand had acquired.
⁵⁵ He also ^(AJ)drove out the nations before them
And ^(AK)apportioned them for an inheritance by measurement,
And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.
⁵⁶ Yet they ^[h](AL)tested and ^(AM)rebelled against the Most High God
And did not keep His testimonies,
⁵⁷ But turned back and ^(AN)acted treacherously like their fathers;
They ^(AO)turned aside like a treacherous bow.
⁵⁸ For they ^(AP)provoked Him with their ^(AQ)high places
And ^(AR)aroused His jealousy with their ^(AS)graven images.
⁵⁹ God heard and ^[i]was filled with ^(AT)wrath
And greatly ^(AU)rejected Israel;
⁶⁰ So that He ^(AV)abandoned the ^(AW)dwelling place at Shiloh,
The tent ^[j]which He caused to dwell among men,
⁶¹ And gave up His ^(AX)strength to captivity
And His beauty ^(AY)into the hand of the adversary.
⁶² He also ^(AZ)gave over His people to the sword,
And ^[k]was filled with wrath at His inheritance.
^63 (BA)Fire devoured ^[l]His choice men,
And ^[m]His ^(BB)virgins had no wedding songs.
^64 [n]His ^(BC)priests fell by the sword,
And ^[o]His ^(BD)widows could not weep.

⁶⁵ Then the Lord ^(BE)awoke as if from sleep,
As if He were a ^(BF)warrior ^[p]overcome by wine.
⁶⁶ He ^(BG)struck His adversaries backward;
He put on them an everlasting reproach.
⁶⁷ He also ^(BH)rejected the tent of Joseph,
And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
⁶⁸ But chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount ^(BI)Zion which He loved.
⁶⁹ And He ^(BJ)built His sanctuary like the heights,
Like the earth which He has founded forever.
⁷⁰ He also ^(BK)chose David His servant
And took him from the sheepfolds;
⁷¹ From ^(BL)following the ^[q](BM)nursing ewes He brought him
To ^(BN)shepherd Jacob His people,
And Israel ^(BO)His inheritance.
⁷² So he shepherded them according to the ^(BP)integrity of his heart,
And led them with his skillful hands.

⁷ The ^(M)way of the righteous is upright;
O Upright One, ^(N)make the path of the righteous level.
⁸ Indeed, while following the way of ^(O)Your judgments, O Yahweh,
We have hoped for You eagerly;
^(P)Your name—the ^(Q)memory of You—is the desire of our souls.
^9 (R)At night ^[b]my soul longs for You,
Indeed, ^[c]my spirit within me ^(S)seeks You earnestly;
For when the earth ^[d]experiences Your judgments,
The inhabitants of the world ^(T)learn righteousness.
¹⁰ Though the wicked is shown favor,
He does not ^(U)learn righteousness;
He ^(V)deals unjustly in the land of uprightness,
And does not perceive the majesty of Yahweh.

¹¹ O Yahweh, Your hand is raised up high, yet they ^(W)do not behold it.
^[e]They behold ^(X)Your zeal for the people and are put to shame;
Indeed, ^[f](Y)fire will devour Your adversaries.
¹² Yahweh, You will establish ^(Z)peace for us,
Since You have also performed for us all our works.
¹³ O Yahweh our God, ^(AA)other masters besides You have ruled us;
But through You alone we ^(AB)bring Your name to remembrance.
^14 (AC)The dead will not live; the ^[g]departed spirits will not rise;
Therefore You have ^(AD)visited and destroyed them,
And You have made all remembrance of them perish.
^15 (AE)You have increased the nation, O Yahweh;
You have increased the nation, You are glorified;
You have ^(AF)extended all the borders of the land.
¹⁶ O Yahweh, they visited You ^(AG)in distress;
They ^[h]could only whisper a prayer;
Your chastening was upon them.
^17 (AH)As the ^[i]woman with child draws near to the time to give birth,
She writhes and cries out in her pangs of labor,
Thus were we before You, O Yahweh.
¹⁸ We were ^[j]with child, we writhed in labor;
We ^(AI)gave birth, as it seems, only to wind.
We could not accomplish salvation for the earth,
And the ^(AJ)inhabitants of the world ^[k]were not born.
¹⁹ Your ^(AK)dead will live;
^[l]Their corpses will rise.
You who dwell in the dust, ^(AL)awake and shout for joy,
For your dew is as the dew of the ^[m]dawn,
And the earth will ^[n]give birth to the ^[o]departed spirits.

²⁰ Come, my people, ^(AM)enter into your rooms
And close your doors behind you;
Hide for a little ^[p](AN)while
Until ^(AO)indignation passes by.
²¹ For behold, Yahweh is about to ^(AP)come out from His place
To ^(AQ)visit the iniquity of the inhabitants of the earth;
And the earth will ^(AR)reveal her bloodshed
And will no longer cover those of hers who were killed.
