11 So Yahweh said to me, “(A)Do not pray for the good of this people. 12 When they fast, I am (B)not going to listen to their cry; and when they offer (C)burnt offering and grain offering, I am not going to accept them. Rather I am going to (D)make an end of them by the (E)sword, famine, and pestilence.”
Lying Prophets
13 But, “Ah, Lord Yahweh!” I said, “Behold, the prophets are saying to them, ‘You (F)will not see the sword nor will you have famine, but I will give you true (G)peace in this place.’” 14 Then Yahweh said to me, “The (H)prophets are prophesying lies in My name. (I)I have neither sent them nor commanded them nor spoken to them; they are prophesying to you a (J)vision of lies, divination, futility, and the deception of their own hearts. 15 Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning the prophets who are prophesying in My name, although it was not I who sent them—yet they keep saying, ‘There will be no sword or famine in this land’—(K)by that sword and famine those prophets shall [a]meet their end! 16 The people also to whom they are prophesying will be (L)thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and there will be no one to (M)bury them—neither them, nor their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters—for I will (N)pour out their own evil on them.
17 And you will say this word to them,
‘(O)Let my eyes flow down with tears night and day,
And let them not cease,
For the virgin (P)daughter of my people has been shattered with a mighty shattering,
With a sorely (Q)sick wound.
18 If I (R)go out to the field,
Behold, those [b]slain with the sword!
Or if I enter the city,
Behold, diseases of famine!
For (S)both prophet and priest
Have gone around as merchants in the land that they do not know.’”
19 Have You completely (T)rejected Judah?
Or [c]have You loathed Zion?
Why have You stricken us so that (U)there is no healing for us?
We (V)hoped for peace, but there was no good;
And for a time of healing, but behold, terror!
20 We (W)know our wickedness, O Yahweh,
The iniquity of our fathers, for (X)we have sinned against You.
21 Do not [d]despise us, (Y)for Your own name’s sake;
Do not disgrace the (Z)throne of Your glory;
Remember and do not break Your covenant with us.
22 Are there any among the [e](AA)idols of the nations who (AB)give rain?
Or can the heavens give showers?
Is it not You, O Yahweh our God?
Therefore we [f](AC)hope in You,
For You are the one who has done all these things.
Yahweh Appoints Four Kinds of Doom
15 Then Yahweh said to me, “Even (AD)though (AE)Moses and (AF)Samuel were to (AG)stand before Me, My soul would not be [g]with this people; (AH)send them away from My presence and let them go! 2 And it will be that when they say to you, ‘Where should we go?’ then you are to tell them, ‘Thus says Yahweh:
“Those destined (AI)for death, to death;
And those destined for the sword, to the sword;
And those destined for famine, to famine;
And those destined for captivity, to captivity.”’
3 I will (AJ)appoint over them four kinds of doom,” declares Yahweh: “the sword to kill, the (AK)dogs to drag off, and the (AL)birds of the sky and the beasts of the earth to devour and bring to ruin. 4 I will (AM)give them over to be an example of terror among all the kingdoms of the earth because of (AN)Manasseh, the son of Hezekiah, the king of Judah, for what he did in Jerusalem.
5 “Indeed, who will (AO)spare you, O Jerusalem,
Or who will (AP)console you,
Or who will turn aside to ask about your well-being?
6 You who have (AQ)abandoned Me,” declares Yahweh,
“You keep (AR)going backward.
So I will (AS)stretch out My hand against you and bring you to ruin;
I am (AT)tired of [h]relenting!
7 And I will (AU)winnow them with a winnowing fork
At the gates of the land;
I will (AV)bereave them of children; I will make My people perish;
(AW)They did not [i]repent of their ways.
8 Their (AX)widows will be more numerous before Me
Than the sand of the seas;
I will bring against them, against the mother of a choice man,
A (AY)destroyer at noonday;
I will suddenly bring down on her
Anguish and terror.
9 She who (AZ)bore seven sons languishes;
[j]Her breathing is labored.
Her (BA)sun has set while it was yet day;
She has been (BB)shamed and humiliated.
So I will (BC)give over their survivors to the sword
Before their enemies,” declares Yahweh.
Jeremiah Pleads for Vengeance
10 (BD)Woe to me, my mother, that you have borne me
As a (BE)man of strife and a man of contention to all the land!
I have not (BF)lent, nor have men lent money to me,
Yet everyone curses me.
11 Yahweh said, “Surely I will (BG)set you free for purposes of good;
Surely I will cause the (BH)enemy to intercede with you
In a time of disaster and a time of distress.
12 “Can anyone smash iron,
(BI)Iron from the north, or bronze?
13 Your (BJ)wealth and your treasures
I will give for plunder (BK)without cost,
Even for all your sins
And within all your borders.
14 Then I will cause your enemies to pass [k]it over
Into a (BL)land you do not know,
For a (BM)fire has been kindled in My anger;
It will burn upon you.”
15 (BN)You who know, O Yahweh,
Remember me, take notice of me,
And (BO)take vengeance for me on my persecutors.
Do not, in view of Your patience, take me away;
Know that (BP)for Your sake I endure reproach.
16 Your words were found, and I (BQ)ate them,
And Your (BR)words became for me joy and gladness in my heart,
For I have been (BS)called by Your name,
O Yahweh God of hosts.
17 I (BT)did not sit in the circle of merrymakers,
Nor did I exult.
Because of Your hand upon me I sat (BU)alone,
For You (BV)filled me with indignation.
18 Why has my pain been perpetual
And my (BW)wound incurable, refusing to be healed?
Will You indeed be to me (BX)like a deceptive stream
With water that is unreliable?
Yahweh’s Answer
19 Therefore thus says Yahweh,
“(BY)If you return, then I will cause you to return—
(BZ)Before Me you will stand;
And (CA)if you extract the precious from the worthless,
You will become [l]My mouthpiece.
They for their part may turn to you,
But as for you, you must not turn to them.
20 Then I will (CB)make you to this people
A fortified wall of bronze;
And they will fight against you,
But they will not prevail against you,
For (CC)I am with you to save you
And deliver you,” declares Yahweh.
21 “So I will (CD)deliver you from the hand of the evil ones,
And I will (CE)redeem you from the [m]grasp of the ruthless ones.”
Yahweh Withdraws His Favor
16 The word of Yahweh also came to me saying, 2 “You shall not take a wife for yourself nor have sons or daughters in this place.” 3 For thus says Yahweh concerning the sons and daughters born in this place and concerning their (CF)mothers who bear them and their (CG)fathers who beget them in this land: 4 “They will (CH)die of deadly diseases; they (CI)will not be lamented or buried; they will be as (CJ)dung on the surface of the ground and come to an end by sword and famine, and their carcasses will become food for the (CK)birds of the sky and for the beasts of the earth.”
5 For thus says Yahweh, “Do not enter the house of the (CL)funeral meal, or go to lament or to console them; for I have (CM)withdrawn My peace from this people,” declares Yahweh, “My (CN)lovingkindness and compassion. 6 Both (CO)great men and small will die in this land; they will not be buried; they will not be lamented, nor will anyone (CP)gash himself or (CQ)shave his head for them. 7 Men will not (CR)break bread in mourning for them, to comfort anyone for the dead, nor give them a cup of comforting to drink for anyone’s father or mother. 8 Moreover you shall (CS)not go into a house of feasting to sit with them to eat and drink.” 9 For thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: “Behold, I am going to (CT)cause to cease from this place, before your eyes and in your days, the voice of rejoicing and the voice of gladness, the voice of the groom and the voice of the bride.
10 “Now when you tell this people all these words, they will say to you, ‘(CU)For what reason has Yahweh declared all this great calamity against us? And what is our iniquity, or what is our sin which we have committed against Yahweh our God?’ 11 Then you are to say to them, ‘It is (CV)because your fathers have forsaken Me,’ declares Yahweh, ‘and have walked after (CW)other gods and served them and worshiped them; but Me they have forsaken and have not kept My law. 12 You too have done evil, even (CX)more than your fathers; for behold, you are each one walking according to the (CY)stubbornness of his own (CZ)evil heart, without listening to Me. 13 So I will (DA)hurl you out of this land into the (DB)land which you have not known, neither you nor your fathers; and there you will (DC)serve other gods day and night, for I will grant you no favor.’
They Shall Know My Name Is Yahweh
14 “(DD)Therefore behold, days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when it will no longer be said, ‘As Yahweh lives, who (DE)brought up the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt,’ 15 but, ‘As Yahweh lives, who brought up the sons of Israel from the (DF)land of the north and from all the lands where He had banished them.’ For I will return them to their own land which I gave to their fathers.
9 For you remember, brothers, our (A)labor and hardship, how (B)working night and day so as not to be a (C)burden to any of you, we proclaimed to you the (D)gospel of God. 10 You are witnesses, and so is (E)God, of (F)how devoutly and righteously and blamelessly we [a]behaved toward you [b]believers; 11 just as you know how we were (G)exhorting and encouraging and (H)bearing witness to each one of you as (I)a father would his own children, 12 so that you would (J)walk in a manner worthy of the God who (K)calls you into His own kingdom and (L)glory.
13 And for this reason we also (M)thank God without ceasing that when you received the (N)word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it (O)not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, (P)which also is at work in you who believe. 14 For you, brothers, became (Q)imitators of (R)the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are (S)in Judea, for (T)you also suffered the same things at the hands of your own countrymen, (U)even as they did from the Jews, 15 (V)who both killed the Lord Jesus and (W)the prophets, and [c]drove us out, and do not please God, and are hostile to all men, 16 (X)hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles (Y)so that they may be saved; with the result that they always (Z)fill up the measure of their sins. But (AA)wrath has come upon them [d]to the utmost.
17 But we, brothers, having been taken away from you for a [e]short while—(AB)in face but not in heart—were all the more eager with great desire (AC)to see your face. 18 [f]For (AD)we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, [g](AE)more than once—and yet (AF)Satan (AG)hindered us. 19 For who is our hope or (AH)joy or crown of boasting? Is it not even you, before our Lord Jesus at His [h](AI)coming? 20 For you are (AJ)our glory and joy.
Timothy’s Good Report
3 Therefore (AK)when we could endure it no longer, we were pleased to be left behind at (AL)Athens alone, 2 and we sent (AM)Timothy, our brother and God’s fellow worker in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you as to your faith, 3 so that no one would be shaken by these afflictions, for you yourselves know that (AN)we have been destined for this. 4 For indeed when we were with you, we kept telling you in advance that we were going to suffer affliction, (AO)just as it happened and as you know. 5 For this reason, (AP)when I could endure it no longer, I also (AQ)sent to know about your faith, lest somehow (AR)the tempter has tempted you, and (AS)our labor be in vain.
6 But now that (AT)Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us good news of (AU)your faith and love, and that you always (AV)remember us kindly, longing to see us just as we also long to see you, 7 for this reason, brothers, in all our distress and affliction we were comforted about you through your faith; 8 for now we really live, if you (AW)stand firm in the Lord. 9 For (AX)what thanks can we render to God for you in return for all the joy with which we rejoice before our God because of you, 10 as we (AY)night and day keep praying most earnestly that we may (AZ)see your face, and may (BA)complete what is lacking in your faith?
11 (BB)Now may (BC)our God and Father (BD)Himself and Jesus our Lord (BE)direct our way to you, 12 and may the Lord cause you to increase and (BF)abound in love for one another, and for all people, just as we also do for you, 13 so that He may (BG)strengthen your hearts (BH)blameless in holiness, before (BI)our God and Father, at the [i](BJ)coming of our Lord Jesus (BK)with all His [j]saints.
O God, Restore Us
For the choir director. [a]El Shoshannim. [b]Eduth. Of Asaph. A Psalm.
80 O (A)Shepherd of Israel, give ear,
You who guide (B)Joseph like a flock;
You who (C)are enthroned above the cherubim, shine forth!
2 Before (D)Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, (E)stir up Your might
And come to save us!
3 O God, (F)restore us
And (G)cause Your face to shine upon us, that we would be saved.
4 O (H)Yahweh God of hosts,
(I)How long will You [c]smolder against the prayer of Your people?
5 You have fed them with the (J)bread of tears,
And You have made them to drink tears in [d]large measure.
6 You set us as [e]an object of strife (K)to our neighbors,
And our enemies mock us among themselves.
7 O God of hosts, restore us
And cause Your face to shine upon us, that we might be saved.
8 You removed a (L)vine from Egypt;
You (M)drove out the [f]nations and then You (N)planted it.
9 You (O)cleared the ground before it,
And it (P)took deep root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shadow,
And [g]the cedars of God with its (Q)boughs.
11 It sent out its branches (R)to the sea
And its shoots to the River.
12 Why have You (S)broken down its [h]hedges,
So that all who pass that way pick its fruit?
13 A boar from the forest (T)devours it
And whatever moves in the field feeds on it.
14 O God of hosts, (U)return now, we beseech You;
(V)Look down from heaven and see, and visit this vine,
15 Even the [i](W)sapling which Your right hand has planted,
And on the [j]son whom You have [k]strengthened for Yourself.
16 It is (X)burned with fire, it is cut down;
They perish at the (Y)rebuke of Your face.
17 Let (Z)Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand,
Upon the son of man whom You (AA)made strong for Yourself.
18 Then we shall not (AB)turn back from You;
(AC)Revive us, and we will call upon Your name.
19 O Yahweh God of hosts, (AD)restore us;
Cause Your face to shine upon us, that we might be saved.
Analogies of Wisdom
25 These also are (A)proverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah, king of Judah, transcribed.
2 It is the glory of God to (B)conceal a matter,
But the glory of (C)kings is to search out a matter.
3 As the heavens for height and the earth for depth,
So the heart of kings is unsearchable.
4 Take away the (D)dross from the silver,
And there comes out a vessel for the (E)smith;
5 Take away the (F)wicked before the king,
And his (G)throne will be established in righteousness.
