Psalm 41

Psalm 41

For the worship leader. A song of David.

The first four books of Psalms end with a variation of the doxology found in verse 13: “Blessed is the Eternal, the True God of Israel. Always and Eternal. Amen and Amen.” This declaration not only provides a natural break—a seam—between the five books, but it also summarizes an essential theme of the psalms. You see, the Book of Psalms is primarily a book of praise to God for His creation, mercy, and salvation. Even when life is hard, our enemies strong, and our health poor, God can be praised for life itself and the ultimate victory to come for those who trust Him.

Blessed are those who consider the helpless.
    The Eternal will stay near them, leading them to safety in times of bitter struggle.
The Eternal defends them and preserves them,
    and His blessing will find them in the land He gave them.
    He moves ahead to frustrate their enemies’ plans.
When sickness comes, the Eternal is beside them—
    to comfort them on their sickbeds and restore them to health.

And me? I cry out to Him,
    “Heal my soul, O Eternal One, and show mercy
    because I have sinned against You!”
My enemies are talking about me even now:
    “When will death come for him and his name be forgotten?”
As they sit with me under my roof, their well wishes are empty lies.
    They listen to my story
    and then turn it around to tell their own version on the street.
Across the city, crowds whisper lies about me.
    Their hate is strong, and they search for ways to harm me.

Some are saying: “Some vile disease has gotten hold of him.
    The bed he lies in will be his deathbed.”
Even my best friend, my confidant
    who has eaten my bread will stab me in the back.[a]
10 But You, Eternal One, show mercy to me.
    Extend Your gracious hand, and help me up.
    I need to pay them back for what they’ve done to me.

11 I realize now that Your favor has come to me,
    for my enemies have yet to declare victory over me.
12 You know and uphold me—a man of honor.
    You grant me strength and life forever in Your presence.

13 Blessed is the Eternal, the True God of Israel.
    Always and Eternal. Amen and Amen.

Psalm 52

Psalm 52

For the worship leader. A contemplative song[a] of David when the Edomite Doeg told Saul that David had received help from Ahimelech.

Psalm 52 recalls the callous way Doeg and Saul put to death the 85 priests of Nob (1 Samuel 22:6–19). The psalm ends with a memorable image: the one who keeps faith with God is like a lush olive tree cared for in His garden. While those who do not trust in Him are snatched up and torn away, those who do right will flourish under His care.

Why do you boast of all the trouble you stir up, O mighty one,
    when the constant, unfailing love of God is what truly lasts?
Have you listened to yourself?
    Your tongue is like a sharp razor,
    full of lies that slash and tear right to the soul.
You’ve fallen in love with evil and have no interest in what He calls good.
    You prefer your own lies to speaking what is true.

[pause][b]

You love words that destroy people, don’t you,
    lying tongue?

You won’t be smiling
    when the True God brings His justice and destroys you forever.
    He will come into your home, snatch you away,
    and pull you from the land of the living.

[pause]

Those who are just will see what happens to you and be afraid.
    And some of them will laugh and say,
“Hey, look! Over there is the one who didn’t take
    shelter in the True God;
Instead, he trusted in his great wealth
    and got what he wanted by destroying others!”

But my life is abundant—like a lush olive tree
    cared for at the house of the one True God.
I put my trust in His kind love
    forever and ever; it will never fail.
Because of all You have done,
    I will humble myself and thank You forever.
With Your faithful people at my side,
    I will put my hope in Your good reputation.

Psalm 44

Psalm 44

For the worship leader. A contemplative song[a] of the sons of Korah.

With our own ears, O God, we have heard the stories
    our ancestors recited of Your deeds in their days, days long past—
    how You saved the day.
With a powerful hand, You drove the nations from this land,
    but then You planted our parents here.
You fought for us against people of this land;
    You set our parents free to enjoy its goodness.
They did not win the land with their swords.
    It wasn’t their strength that won them victory.
It was Your strength—Your right hand, Your arm,
    and the light of Your presence that gave them success,
    for You loved them.

You are my King, my God!
    You ordained victories for Jacob and his people!
You are our victory, pushing back the enemy;
    at the sound of Your name, we crush the opposition.
I don’t trust in my weapons
    or in my strength to win me victory.
But You rescue us from our foes;
    You shame our enemies.
We shout Your name all day long;
    we will praise Your name forever!

[pause][b]

But wait, God, where have You gone? Why have You shamed us?
    Why do our armies stand alone?
10 Without Your help we must retreat from our enemy,
    and the very ones who despise us pillage us.
11 You have offered us up to our enemies,
    like sheep to the slaughter, meat for their feast,
    and You have dispersed us among the nations.
12 You sold Your people for mere pennies,
    and You gained nothing from the deal.

13 You have made us a joke to our friends and neighbors,
    mocked and ridiculed by all those around us.
14 You have brought us infamy among the nations
    and made us an object of scorn and laughter to our neighbors.
15 Disgrace follows me everywhere I go; I am constantly embarrassed.
    Shame is written across my face
16 Because of the taunting and berating of those who are against me,
    because the enemy seeks revenge against me.

17 All this has happened to us,
    yet we have never forgotten You;
    we have not broken Your covenant with us.
18 Our hearts stayed true to You;
    we have never left Your path;
    we follow on.
19 Yet You have tested us, left us defeated in a land of jackals,
    and shrouded us with the veil of death.

20 Even if we had forgotten the name of our God
    or offered praise to another god,
21 Would not the True God have known it?
    For He can see the hidden places of our hearts.
22 On Your behalf, our lives are endangered constantly;
    we are like sheep awaiting slaughter.[c]

23 Wake up, Lord! Why do You slumber?
    Get up! Do not reject us any longer!
24 Why are You still hiding from us?
    Why are You still ignoring our suffering and trouble?
25 Look and You will see our souls now dwell in the dust;
    our bodies hug the earth.
26 Rise up and help us;
    restore us for the sake of Your boundless love.

1 Samuel 24

24 After Saul had returned from chasing the Philistines, he was told that David had gone to the wilderness of Engedi. He gathered 3,000 hardened fighting men from across Israel and sought David in the vicinity of the Rocks of Wild Goats. When he came to the sheep shelters beside the road, a cave was there, and Saul went inside to relieve himself. Unguarded, he was especially vulnerable to attack.

Now Saul didn’t know it, but David and his men were hiding in the recesses of that very cave. David’s guards thought it was the perfect time to strike.

It seems as if much of the First Book of Samuel is taken up with Saul trying to kill David and David escaping; and when David catches Saul in the most vulnerable position, his men urge him to kill Saul. It would be nothing more than self-defense. Wouldn’t Saul kill David if Saul caught him with his pants down? Isn’t Saul turning over every stone in the wilderness looking for David so he can kill him?

David settles for a symbolic victory—he cuts off a corner of Saul’s robe while Saul is otherwise occupied—but then he feels ashamed. If David is supposed to be king someday, God will make that happen. But until that time, who is he to bring shame on the king whom God anointed as his ruler?

The exchange between David and Saul shows both men at their best. At times, David could be a schemer; Saul’s obsession and possible mental illness could obscure the good qualities that caused God to choose him in the first place. But in this exchange, each acknowledges the other. Saul sees that David could have killed him and chose not to; for the moment, he sees the truth about their relationship. In return Saul acknowledges what he knows in his heart to be true: David will someday be the king, and not he or his sons. And as Eli did earlier, Saul here accepts God’s plan, even though it will be the destruction of his line. Saul doesn’t always keep this understanding, and he will pursue David again. But Saul has his good—even noble—qualities, especially as his time grows short.

David’s Men: This must be the very day the Eternal One told you about: “Watch! I will give your enemy to you, and you will do whatever you please with him.”

David crept forward quietly and moved in so close he was able to cut a corner from Saul’s robe. But immediately afterward, David felt awful about what he had done.

David (to his men): God forbid that I do any harm to my lord, the one chosen by the Eternal to rule. How could I even pretend to assault him, knowing he is the Eternal’s anointed king?

David reprimanded his men, refusing to allow them to attack Saul. At last Saul finished and went outside the cave.

David followed him at a safe distance. When Saul exited the cave, David called out.

David: My lord, the king!

Saul turned around to see David bowing low, his face touching the ground to show his respect.

David: My lord, why do you listen to those who say I plan to harm you? 10 Look! Today the Eternal One placed you at my mercy in that cave. I could have done anything to you, and some said I should kill you. But I refused. I said, “I will not raise my hand against my lord, the Eternal’s anointed king.”

11 Father, do you see what I am holding in my hand? It is the corner of your robe. Recognize and understand that I have not committed evil or treason against you—that I cut this off and did not kill you. I have not wronged you, even though you are hunting me and trying to kill me.

12 May the Eternal One judge between us. If the Eternal chooses to avenge me and punish you, then let Him, but I will not take revenge against you. 13 As the old proverb says, “From the wicked flows wickedness.” But I will not harm you.

14 Whom did the king of Israel come out in pursuit of, anyway? A dead dog? A lone flea? Someone as insignificant as I am? 15 May the Eternal One judge between us. May He see who has done wrong and argue my case and uphold justice on my behalf.

16 David’s voice fell silent. Saul could hardly believe his eyes and ears.

Saul: Is that really you, David my son? (weeping loudly) 17 It’s true that you are more righteous than I am—you have repaid me with good when I handed you only evil. 18 Today you demonstrated how you dealt kindly with me by not killing me when the Eternal gave you power over me. 19 Who has ever come across his enemy in such a vulnerable position and yet allowed him to go away safely? So may the Eternal reward you richly for the good you have done for me today.

20 Now I know that you will surely be king someday, and that you will establish the kingdom of Israel. 21 So swear to me—by the Eternal One—that when that time comes, you will not destroy my descendants, and you won’t wipe my name from my family tree.

22 David swore this to Saul. Saul went home, and David and his men returned to their hideout.

Acts 13:44-52

44 The next Sabbath, it seemed the whole city had gathered to hear the message of the Lord. 45 But some of the Jewish leaders were jealous when they saw these huge crowds. They began to argue with and contradict Paul’s message, as well as slander him. 46 Paul and Barnabas together responded with great confidence.

Paul and Barnabas: OK, then. It was only right that we should bring God’s message to you Jewish people first. But now, since you are rejecting our message and identifying yourselves as unworthy of eternal life, we are turning to the outsiders. 47 The Lord has commanded us to do this. Remember His words:

    I have appointed you a light to the nations beyond Israel,
        so you can bring redemption to every corner of the earth.[a]

48 These words created two strong reactions. The outsiders were thrilled and praised God’s message, and all those who had been appointed for eternal life became believers. 49 Through them the Lord’s message spread through the whole region. 50 But the Jewish leaders united the aristocratic religious women and the city’s leading men in opposition to Paul and Barnabas, and soon they were persecuted and driven out of the region. 51 They simply shook the dust off their feet in protest and moved on to Iconium. 52 The disciples weren’t intimidated at all; rather, they were full of joy and the Holy Spirit.

Mark 4:1-20

1-2 Jesus went out again to teach by the Sea of Galilee. When the crowd became unmanageable, He climbed aboard a boat and sat down to teach the people listening on the shore by telling them parables. One of His teachings went like this:

Jesus: Listen! A farmer went out and sowed his seed. As he scattered it, one seed fell along the hardened path, and a bird flapped down and snapped it up. One seed fell onto rocky places where the soil was thin, so it sprang up quickly. But when the hot sun scorched the fragile stems and leaves, the seedling withered because its roots didn’t go deep in the soil. One of the seeds fell among the weeds and thorns, which crowded the seedling out of producing a crop. And the rest of the seeds fell in good, rich soil. When they sprouted, the plants grew and produced a crop 30, 60, even 100 times larger than expected for every seed that the farmer had sown.

All who have ears to hear, let them listen.

10 When they were alone, the twelve and others close to Him asked why He always taught in parables instead of explaining His teachings clearly.

Jesus: 11 God has let you in on the inside story regarding the workings of the Kingdom—the hidden meanings. But the crowds—I teach them in parables 12 as the prophet Isaiah predicted,

    So that when they look, they see and yet do not understand.
        When they hear, they listen and yet do not comprehend.
    Otherwise, they might really turn and be forgiven.[a]

This makes the disciples scratch their heads. Why would He want to hide the truth from some people? His teachings are hard enough without putting them into parables.

13 Do you mean to say that you didn’t understand My parable of the sower? That was the key parable. If you don’t see what I was trying to teach there, how will you be able to understand any of the others?

14 The seed the farmer is sowing is the good news, God’s word. 15 Some people are the seed thrown onto the path, and the tempter snaps up the word before it can even take root. 16 Others are the seed thrown among the rocks. Those people hear the word and receive it immediately with joy and enthusiasm; 17 but without deep roots, doubt, trouble, or persecution instantly withers their faith. 18 Still others are the seed tossed among weeds and brambles. The word has reached them, 19 but the things of this life—the worries, the drive for more and more, the desire for other things—those things cluster around close and choke the life of God out of them until they cannot produce. 20 But those last seeds—those sown into good soil? Those people hear the word, accept it, meditate on it, act on it, and bear fruit—a crop 30, 60, or 100 times larger than the farmer dropped to earth.
